DARK TAPESTRY by Ruthie Pearlman
Colin sighed audibly. Mrs. Brandt looked even more flustered. Then, out of the blue, a small girl, looking no older than ten, appeared and gave the two policemen an angelic smile which they couldn’t help but respond to with their own. “I know where Moishie is. I’ll find him for you, shall I?” “Yes, please,” said White. “We really need to talk to him.” The angelic smile flashed again, and she ran outside. “Nice kid you got there,” said White appreciatively. Mrs. Brandt glowed with the compliment. “She’s my best helper.” Colin tried his hardest not to roll his eyes. This house was a nightmare of mess, clutter, and kids. The woman obviously had far more than she could cope with, and if she was relying on a ten-year-old kid as her best helper, well. Says it all, really. They stood around for a couple of moments. Then the woman, highly embarrassed, asked them into the living room to sit down. The clutter there was only marginally less than in the hallway. Obviously there was no “best” room like in some non-Jewish homes he had been to. Kids allowed to run everywhere. She brushed an elaborate battle scene of toy soldiers off the sofa onto the floor and they sat. “Cup of tea? Cold drink?” “Tea would be nice,” Colin said. “Milk and two sugars for both of us,” White confirmed. At that moment the girl reappeared, younger brother in tow, a sulky expression on his face. “He didn’t like me taking him away from his football,” she explained with a grin that lit up the room. “Brachele, would you please make two teas for the policemen, milk and two sugars in each?” Colin’s mouth dropped open. A ten-year-old girl making tea? “Sure, Mummy. Would you like one, too?” “Oh, yes, please. You know how I like mine.” The girl disappeared. Moishie stood, looking longingly at the front door. “The policemen want to ask you some more questions about Josh,” Mrs. Brandt said. “C’mere, lad,” Colin said, trying his best not to sound patronizing. Moishie approached cautiously. “Good football game out there, is it?”

The boy glowed. “Yeah, I scored two goals, and they need me.” “You’ll be back out there in a jiffy. Just answer some questions about Josh, okay?” “Okay. But I told him there,” a pointed finger at White, “already.” “Yeah, I know you did. Just tell me again, okay? Now you told this nice policeman here that Josh had seemed a bit... strange the last few days before he disappeared. Can you explain that a little better for me? We policemen are a bit thick between the ears, you know.” “A little better?” “Yeah. What do you mean by strange?” “Well, Josh is a good friend of mine. We play a lot. Every break we’re out playing football and stuff...” “Yes,” Colin said encouragingly. “Well, the last couple of days he said he didn’t really want to play. He said he was feeling a bit funny and wanted to sit down and watch instead.” “A bit funny? What do you mean? Ill?” “I asked if he was ill and he said no. If he’d been ill, he’d have gone to the secretary’s office and gone home maybe. But he said he wasn’t ill, just felt a bit sad and didn’t feel like football.” “And he usually did feel like football?” “Yes, always. He was the second best footballer in the class.” Colin grinned. “The best being...?” The boy had the good grace to blush. “Mummy says I’m not supposed to boast.” The two policemen smiled indulgently at him and his mother. “So,” the boy went on, assured of an appreciative audience now, “I asked him what he was sad about.” He paused for dramatic effect. Little actor we have here, Colin thought. “And he said, ‘There’s a man who keeps speaking to me when I’m out playing.’ ” The two policemen froze in their tracks. Colin crouched down to Moishie’s level and grasped his shoulders. “Now, lad, be very very sure of what you are saying.” The boy nodded solemnly. “You are absolutely sure that Josh said a man kept speaking to him when he was out playing?” Moishie nodded again. “Did he mean in school or in the evenings or Sundays?” Moishie considered. “Not in school. We have gates and a security guard, and his mummy comes to fetch him

right after.” “The security at the school is pretty tight,” put in his mother. “There’s not much chance for anyone unauthorized to get in.” Colin nodded and gazed intently into Moishie’s face. “So he meant at home, playing outside?” “Yeah, I suppose.” “Did Josh say what the man had said to him to make him sad?” Moishie thought hard. “Not exactly, ” he said at last, “but he said it made him feel scared. And he never lied to me. So he must have been. Very scared.”

Ilana stood at her kitchen window, gazing out at a beautiful spring morning. The garden was burgeoning with new life; the flowers she had planted were firm and bright, like plastic, showing no signs of wither or droop. It had rained in the night, and everything looked washed clean under the new sun. Droplets of water sparkled off the crisp leaves, prisms of light captured in them as the sun danced. A robin, the first she had seen in ages, hopped delicately around the edge of the lawn, pecking politely at the rich earth for worms. It looked up and saw Ilana watching, put its head to one side and gave her the full blast of a button-bright eye. Despite her misery, Ilana couldn’t help but smile. It was so contrived, so posed, so obviously for her benefit. Then she thought, How dare the world be so perfect this morning? How dare it go on as normal when my baby is missing? Don had softly, gently, encouraged his wife to carry on as normal a life as possible, to get dressed as tastefully as possible, to keep her sheitel neatly combed and arranged, even though instincts screamed at her that nothing mattered anymore. Her whole psyche made her want to go around in an old housecoat, hair tucked under an old turban, no makeup. Why should she make herself look nice for a world that had turned on her, turned on itself, twisted and gnarled like the branches of some mutated tree? The safe, friendly world she knew and trusted had turned its other face to her, the back
of a dark, sinister tapestry, showing her only a network of blackened and contorted threads in a meaningless pattern. A pattern she did not understand. And so it was Don, caring Don, who tried to show her that she must fight the dark picture the world was trying to show her and see the truth underneath. The sunlit garden, the plastic-bright flowers, the robin, the dew on the grass, those were the things Hashem wanted her to see. Things of hope, of life, of the future. The right side of the tapestry. Don sat with her for hours in the twilight last night, talking to her, making her see hope where she felt there was none, making her see how nothing that happened was without explanation and without reason, however unreasonable that seemed. While he spoke to her in the cool, lengthening evening, the light dim in the gathering dusk, she felt she could, perhaps, go on another day. In the darkening room, cool and breezy with the windows open and the curtains like maidens dancing in white, looking into his soft and serious dark eyes, hearing his gentle, kind words so full of Torah truths, she felt his strength and faith suffusing her whole being. She drank it in, wanting to drown in it, to hoard it like a camel for the lean dry hours ahead, the hours when he would be gone from her and she had to face the day alone. She felt like a battery, charged when he was around, speaking to her heart, and drained by the time he came home, needing that recharge once more. During the draining hours, despite Don’s admonition that she should carry on as normal, she could not do her work. She could not go into the office and create Web sites while her heart and soul were drifting someplace else. Her whole being longed for her child, cried out to hold him in her arms again, to hear his voice calling for her. The thought of him being in pain somewhere, lost and alone, was like a long sharp sword piercing her heart. Like one turns one’s head away when an injection is about to be given, Ilana turned her mind away from the thought of what might be happening to Josh. She could not bear it. She allowed herself to think of only two possibilities: that he was well and safe somewhere, awaiting rescue, or that he was dead and had died without suffering. The in-between, that awful, yawning chasm colored red and full of agony, she did not allow herself to contemplate.
