Staying at Ben’s was strange for Chaim. Despite the confusion in his brain, he had been brought up Orthodox and to suddenly find himself living in a totally secular environment was akin to being dumped from a warm bath into a vat of icy water. Notwithstanding his negative attitude toward frumkeit when at home, when he was no longer pressured into it, he found himself clinging to it like to a comfort blanket. Ben watched in amazement as Chaim put on his tefillin each morning and davened assiduously. Sometimes he even went to minyan. Chaim never went to minyan when Moshe had pressured him to go. He chose a minyan where he was not well known — certainly he didn’t go to his father’s shul — but he went. He kept up his old chavrusa, having made him promise not to report back to his parents. He kept his own sterile kosher corner in Ben’s kitchen, his own pots and pans. He found his frumkeit stronger now than it had been for many years. During this period, he kept in constant touch with his parents, reassuring them that he was “sorting his head out” and would probably be home soon. Maybe, he thought, this is the answer. Take me away from having to do things, and then I want to do them. He took a job waiting tables at a kosher eatery not far from Golders Green. The money was enough to pay for his food and board, but the hours were long and the work arduous. He longed for some time to himself. After he had saved up enough to tide him over for a few months, he quit the job. “I’d like to look around for something that gives me a bit more time off, time to have fun,” he told Ben. “Good idea,” Ben replied. They were sitting on the floor in Ben’s living room, on giant cushions pushed up against the wall, smoking and drinking lite beer from cans. “Anyway,” Ben continued, “I’m having a party here this weekend. Be a shame if you couldn’t come because you were working.” “A party? What kind?” Ben slid him a sly look. “The fun kind.” Shake was at the party. As soon as he saw Chaim, he cornered him and wasted no time in resuming work on his “new recruit.” He chipped away at the battlements Chaim had built up around himself with fresh arguments and insidious reasoning that wriggled under Chaim’s skin and fed, like parasites, slowly draining the lifeblood of Torah from him. The worst part was that this time, though he couldn’t bear to get drunk again which would lower his

resistance to the heresy Shake so ably spouted at him, to Chaim it still made an inordinate amount of sense. By the end of the party, Chaim became Colin. That was the first step. A couple of days later, he began making excuses to his chavrusa and picking fights with him on the rare occasions they did still learn, until the chavrusa got the message. More steps followed, slowly, relentlessly. He stopped calling his parents. They tried to reach him at Ben’s, but he was always “out.” They came around looking for him and found Ben the gatekeeper refusing them entry, telling them their son was out. “I don’t believe you. Every time we call, every time we come around, he’s out!” Moshe shouted at Ben. “It’s just not possible!” Ben looked at Moshe sadly. “I’m sorry, Mr. Sommers. It’s not my fault. Please don’t yell at me. The truth is, he asked me not to let you speak to him. He’s having a lot of problems at the moment, a lot of confusion. Maybe if you just gave him some space, he’d come around.” “Give him some space? That’s all I’ve been hearing for the past couple of years. The boy can have all the space he wants. I’ve had it.” Moshe began walking away, anger in every movement of his body, with Rifka alongside, crying and casting longing looks back at Ben. Ben stood helplessly at the open door, not wanting to close it until they were well out of sight. Colin, who had heard every word of this exchange, didn’t want to talk about it. Ever. After that he began sleeping late in the morning and missing minyan. Then he began to “forget” to put on his tefillin. Ben said nothing to encourage or discourage this metamorphosis, but secretly rejoiced when Colin started eating with him at the table instead of on his own in his little kosher corner. Then one day, after several fruitless weeks of looking around for a suitable job, Colin came home suffused with excitement. “Guess where I’ve just been?” Ben looked up from the television. “I couldn’t begin to guess,” he said dryly. “I’ve been,” he announced importantly, “to a recruitment drive for the police. And I’ve decided. I’m going to join up.” Ben looked at him, openmouthed. “Does that mean I’ll have to watch my back from now on?” Colin grinned. “And I’ve decided something else. I’m not stopping at being a simple bobby on the beat. My parents always said that as a child I loved to dissect things, take things apart and see how they worked. I’m going to put my curious and analytical mind to good use. I’m going to be the best detective this town has ever seen.”

DAY TWO Chapter Five Ilana had been so sure that Josh would turn up by nightfall, that it was just a daytime flash in the pan, a terrible, painful nightmare that would all be over by dark. Josh would come home, get scolded and cuddled, they would all cry and do a bit of yelling, and then it would be over. She could not even begin to contemplate the horror of darkness falling and Josh still gone. No. He would come home. But he didn’t come home. Don stayed with Ilana on Sunday to keep vigil, but after a sleepless night, morning arrived with no sign of Josh. Don had to go to work, and Ilana had to face the day alone. Now the new day was closing, and Ilana was desperately trying to hold herself together as the minutes ticked by and her son did not show. She had spent the day psyching herself up to begin work on building a customer Web site on her home PC. It was an urgent job. The customers, a middle-sized corporation, were anxious not to be outstripped by the competition, all of whom had a Web presence, and had requested that the site be up and running as soon as possible. The design itself needed her flair and imagination, and the coding needed her to have her head screwed on straight. After two disastrous attempts, viewed in her browser and despaired of, she gave up and sobbed piteously. It was hopeless. She was not only childless, but useless as well. She was purposeless, an empty shell, her essence sucked out. A small part of her prodded her to “have faith, daven, say tehillim; Hashem is the One who will help you,” but at the moment she was incapable of responding to that small part of herself. She was going into shock. At six Dr. Roston came, summoned by her mother. He took one look at her vacant expression and prescribed tranquilizers. Ilana swallowed two tablets obediently, not even asking what they were; they could have been cyanide for all she knew or cared. Don walked in from work at that point and met the doctor in the hallway. “Dr. Roston, what are you doing here? Is Ilana ill?”

“I’m concerned,” the doctor admitted. “She’s in denial. I’ve given her tranquilizers to help her deal with the shock.” Don felt like he’d been punched in the stomach. “Tranquilizers? Shock? Excuse me, I want to see my wife.” He walked past the doctor into the study, where Ilana sat vacantly at her terminal, her text editor blank. Not a word had been entered. When she saw him, Ilana got up from her desk. “Hi, Don.” She smiled, but her eyes were devoid of emotion. “I’m going to make Josh’s supper. He’s been out in the garden and very hungry. Maybe you’ll run his bath?” Don looked back at the doctor, who stood at the door of the study, an unreadable expression on his face. The look Don flashed him could have barbecued a steak. “Will you please run Josh’s bath?” Ilana repeated and walked past him and the doctor into the kitchen. “I can’t play along with this charade!” hissed Don. “She has to be made aware of the situation!” “Oh, she’s aware of it, all right,” the doctor assured him. “This is her way of coping right now, and if you try to enter that bubble of unreality she has built around herself, you had better do it extremely gently or you could do untold damage to her psyche. I gave her tranquilizers only to calm her a little. They aren’t very strong and won’t stop her perceiving reality if she is able to.” After Dr. Roston had left, leaving Don with a list of phone numbers where he could be reached, Don tentatively approached Ilana in the kitchen as she busily laid the table for three. She felt rather than saw him coming and, head averted, rushed across the kitchen to get some salad greens out of the big refrigerator. Don came up behind her and blocked her exit as she turned back. “Don, let me pass.” “No.” She became agitated. “Don, please. Josh is hungry, and I have to prepare the salad.” She flailed at him. Don reached out and caught her hands. “Ilana, sit down. We have to talk.” “No time to talk. Have to get dinner ready. No time, no time.”
