DARK TAPESTRY by Ruthie Pearlman

Ten years ago, he wasn’t called Colin. His name was Chaim. Chaim Sommers at sixteen was a handsome young man, rather marred by a surly, rebellious expression. Overlong blond hair flopped into his blue eyes, but he wore payos behind his ears, a black yarmulke, and a chip on his shoulder a mile high. His parents, Rifka and Moshe Sommers, were typical Golders Green parents, if there was such a thing — devoutly Orthodox, middle class, British born. They had four other children, two younger, two older, all conventional, all toeing the line. Chaim thoroughly disapproved of his parents having so many children. His two brothers went to the local chareidi boys’ primary school, where the most outrageous thing they did was to be cheeky to the teacher or not do their homework. His two sisters were in seminary in Gateshead, one a year ahead of the other, both thoroughly caught up in the spirit of the learning and the ambience. “Chaim in the middle,” his mother used to refer to him fondly, mussing his hair. “Go to the barber,” his father would yell at him angrily. “How can you put on tefillin with hair that long?” “I can. See?” Defiantly he put on a Native American– style headband to keep the recalcitrant locks out of his face. Moshe’s face was like thunder. Rifka turned hers away and sent up a silent prayer for guidance. “Look on the bright side,” Rifka’s friends counseled her. “At least he puts on tefillin. He goes to minyan. He has a chavrusa. He does well in his studies, doesn’t he?” “Yes, he’s a very bright boy. Probably my brightest,” Rifka admitted. “So he wears a headband. So he wears jeans instead of dark trousers. Is it the end of the world?” “No,” Rifka said slowly. “But why does he do these things if not to make a statement? A statement that he doesn’t belong? Doesn’t want to conform?” To this her friends had no answer. Chaim Sommers was popular among his peers. The slightly off-the-wall kids often are — they represent danger, excitement, a challenge to the status quo. He was always up for a dare, always the first in line for a prank at school and frequently defiant at home, too. Despite all this, he did go to shul, he did have a chavrusa every night, and he did take his limudei kodesh studies seriously. “But,” Moshe said to Rifka late one night when they had some rare privacy, “I’ve heard him discussing Chumash, Nach, Talmudic issues, and to be honest it frightens DO YOUme.” HAVE A SHAILA? ASK THE federation “Why?” she asked, puzzled. “He seems to discuss

them like a real scholar. I’ve heard him, too.” Moshe jabbed a finger into the air. “Exactly! Like a scholar. But not a Torah scholar. He learns Torah like a secular Bible scholar. He learns it like a piece of academic literature to be dissected, analyzed, and discussed in abstract terms. He doesn’t learn Torah as if he believes. And that’s what’s so frightening. I’ve seen Bible scholars discussing whether or not Genesis can be taken at face value or if it is all allegory, that sort of thing. They nearly always come to the conclusion that it’s mere allegory. He reminds me of that.” Rifka said in a small voice, “Surely not.” She was a loving Jewish mother, after all, and this was very unpleasant to contemplate. “He has an excellent brain, an analytical mind. Remember when he was small, how he used to take our clocks apart to see how they worked? We didn’t always get them to work again, but we didn’t mind. We wanted to encourage his inquiring mind.” “It is good, isn’t it?” Rifka said doubtfully. Moshe sighed. “Yes and no. We can’t dissect God to see how He works, Rifka. Some things you just have to take on board without question.” Rifka was quiet for a moment. “You think that’s what he’s doing? Trying to dissect God?” Moshe looked at her, his expression somber. “I hope to the bottom of my heart that I’m wrong.” One night, Chaim came home late and wouldn’t tell his parents where he had been. “Gimme some space, for heaven’s sake,” he snapped, then went up to his room and slammed the door. Rifka stared up at the landing, trying to think of all the legitimate places her son might have been and why he wouldn’t tell his parents. Chaim didn’t put his light on, welcoming the anonymity of the dark. He lay on top of his bed, fully clothed, smoking a cigarette. He didn’t think his parents knew he smoked. He was always careful to leave the window open and air the room. In truth, he severely underestimated their astuteness. They couldn’t mistake the smell of tobacco that clung to his clothes, his furnishings, his hair. Smoking, however, was the least of his problems right now. Young though he was, he was far from the only one in his class who smoked. He thought about the night’s events. He had been to a youth club that was rather more secular than religious in nature. He had been slowly drawn into attending this club by a boy he knew slightly who attended a nonJewish school. The boy, Ben, had enraptured Chaim with his love of rock music and his ideas of fun. Ben sauntered over and asked him how he was getting along. “Oh, it’s getting pretty late,” Chaim said uncomfortably. “Maybe I’d better go.” “Lighten up, will ya?” Ben said crossly. “Here. Have some of this.” He held out a can of beer. Even in the semi-darkness Chaim could see Ben looked different from the guy he had arrived with. He’s drunk, he realized, and suddenly he was repelled. He roughly clenched his fists. “Nah. S’okay,” he said, and turned away. “I knew it was a mistake, bringing you. You’re a wimp. You want to go? So go! Back to your frummy frummy home, won’t ya,” Ben sneered, and walked off. Chaim, stunned at the viciousness of this attack, blushed in the darkness. He knew he was being “uncool,” but he didn’t really like the idea of looking as out of it as Ben had. If he left now, Ben would have achieved a victory. Maybe in ten minutes I’ll go, he said to himself. He tapped his feet to the music, trying to blend in. Maybe he wasn’t cut out for this. So what was he cut out for? It seemed like he didn’t belong anywhere. He felt out of place in his home society and equally out of place here. Adrift, miserable, he slid his back down the wall until he was sitting on the floor. He looked at his watch, waiting for when he could legitimately slip away without handing Ben victory on a platter. Well, he thought, the way Ben looks right now, I doubt he’d notice if I left. Someone slid down the wall next to him, a young man, older than himself by at least four years, his hair long and curly, with a goatee, looking rather like young William Shakespeare must have looked. Piercing blue eyes observed him curiously for a moment. “Hiya.” Then, to Chaim’s horror, he yanked at Chaim’s payos, exposing them. “Are these payos I see before me?” he asked in a dreamy voice with a mock Shakespearean accent mixed with an American Midwestern drawl. “Yeah,” Chaim said sheepishly. “Hey, and a kappel, too! I caught me a live one. I’ve

Issue always wanted to meet one, to talk to him, to find395 out what he really believes.” “Maybe I’m not your best example,” Chaim said. “I’m kinda confused myself, to be honest.” “Perfect. The strong believers are boring. There’s no chink you can get in through. I like ’em confused. It leaves me room to maneuver. Let’s see if we can unconfuse you with a dose of my very own homespun philosophy. See? I even have the sandals.” He wiggled his toes, showing his open sandals. He offered Chaim beer. Chaim said no again, but this was a much weaker refusal. The young man grinned. The hook was baited, the line cast, and the fish was reeling in. “It’s only five percent alcohol,” he said. “Like lemonade.” Chaim was thirsty, so he accepted the can of beer and gulped at it. It was semisweet and refreshing. He finished it in three gulps. Then, somehow, there was another in his hand. There followed an important philosophical discussion. Afterward, Chaim could not recall why it had seemed so vital, of such world-shattering significance. It was just that at the time nothing else seemed to matter except sharing deep thoughts with this Shakespeare look-alike. He even called him Shakespeare, and the young man didn’t object. “Call me Shake,” he told Chaim seriously, then, after a pause, added, “Maybe I’m a reincarnation of William Shakespeare. I really like his plays, man. They speak to me, y’know? At school all my friends thought them mega-boring, but I found them deep, you know?” Somewhere in Chaim’s increasingly befuddled brain was the awareness that the beer was getting to him. If he had had the presence of mind to examine the beer cans he’d have seen that the alcohol content was fifteen percent, not five. Nevertheless, this guy seemed to make a lot of sense. All the niggly things that bothered him about his religion which, unlike any other, had undergone no change in the past five thousand years — all his deep-seated feelings came to the surface in the face of Shake’s arguments. Even though a part of his brain spoke with his father’s voice and said to him, “Son, there’s an answer for all your doubts if only you’d let it in,” right now he didn’t want to let it in. It suited him just fine if that old answer stayed right outside the door in the cold. Shake’s long, curly hair and goatee had taken on the misty blurry quality of a Biblical prophet as portrayed by Hollywood. “Be free, man,” Shake said. “It’s the only way to be. Follow your own heart, not some old guy’s ideas of what you should be doing, some old guy who’s been dead for thousands of years. What can he know about the way we live today?” To be continued....
