Indeed, their slogan is ‘a home away from home’, so that they can constantly offer bespoke personalised care and the users feel like they are part of a family. Dozens of families have already benefitted

Can you tell us about your child who resides in Bayis Sheli?

Doniel is my oldest child. He is 15 years old and he moved to Bayis Sheli last year. He was born with a very rare disorder which leaves him mentally and physically disabled; he can’t talk, walk or feed himself. He is in a wheelchair and has no independent living skills so he needs everything done for him, but as long as his basic needs are taken care of, he is happy and

from the facility, whether on a shortor long-term basis, with demand peaking in Yom Tov seasons.

In this interview, Mrs Esti Hamilton, mother of five from Golders Green, whose fifteen-year-old son Doniel joined Bayis Sheli as a permanent resident a year ago, tells us her moving firsthand experience. It gives us a glimpse into how crucial this home is for the community and how grateful we have to be for its existence.

Although the home has been constructed fully hoisted and it boasts a large number of resources, including a hydrotherapy pool, sensory room, soft play room, sensory garden and in the pipeline a learning kitchen, a specialised IT room and a music room, make no mistake, Bayis Sheli is not a luxury for these families.

Bayis Sheli is a number one necessity.

And by the end of reading this, you will no doubt agree.

What did life look like when Doniel lived at home?

He has always been very disabled but, as he got older, it got harder, mostly physically. As I said, cognitively, he is like a toddler, but his

ayis Sheli is a residential respite home for children with special needs. It has a sixteen-bed capacity, with both an under-18s wing and, due to demand, a soon-to-open an adult wing. There are children who live there permanently, as their needs are too demanding to be cared for at home, and there are those who stay temporarily, such as over Yom Tov, when parents have to travel together abroad, if there is a new baby at home or whenever the parents simply need to unwind and have a calm, quiet Shabbos with their other children.

body was growing regularly so when he entered his teens he outgrew my five-foot frame and I simply couldn’t carry him up and down the stairs anymore. Think of any scenarios of a crawling toddler who doesn’t understand discipline, doesn’t grasp danger, and then imagine an adult doing that. He would crawl on the table, get near the hob, and he wouldn’t even flinch if we’d cry out ‘No!’ To add to the equation, he has epilepsy and suffers regularly from seizures. As he got older they became harder to manage. I’d have to call Hatzola but put him in the recovery position myself meanwhile, which got impossible once he was grown.

Although I never saw this move coming, and I always confidently told people who asked us about our long-term plans that Doniel would live with us forever, by the time he was fifteen, there was really no option.

Was there any incident that prompted your decision?

between that minute and the next, I must have fallen asleep from sheer exhaustion. Suddenly, there was a shattering bang. I jumped up. In the minute of my absence, Doniel had crawled onto the table and knocked a glass jug onto the floor.

There was glass everywhere. I stood there in a daze, surrounded by smithereens of glass, the rest of the family fast asleep and a huge adult to somehow manoeuvre off the table and carry over the carpet of glass. I just couldn’t do it and I broke down in tears.

Another incident was when he had an epileptic seizure and I was alone at home with him. I couldn’t move him into the position he needed to be. I was terrified. I felt so helpless. That’s when I realised I couldn’t do this anymore. It was no longer safe for him.

Still, I went through a whole year of denial, assuring myself that I could and I would. He is my bechor after all and nobody could love him as much as I do. But Baruch Hashem, he is so happy and so loved in Bayis Sheli and I have no regrets.

Of all the wonderful blessings

Yes, a culmination of them. On Pesach, Doniel that Bayis Sheli granted was sleeping while our family was enjoying your family, what would you a beautiful calm Pesach Seder. We finished say is the greatest one? around 4am and then everyone fell into bed. As usual, Doniel awoke at 6am. Naturally, I woke No doubt, my children got back their mother! up for him, even though I had barely caught two I was Doniel’s full-time caregiver, going to hours of sleep. I carried him down, gave him hospital with him, managing every crises with breakfast and then I collapsed on the couch from him. I basically didn’t sleep for fourteen years where At some point A COMMUNITY 48 I planned to watch him.

posters of the family so he’s surrounded by those who adore him. There’s even a heimish lady who comes to say Shema with each child at night which is very special.

and I leave it to your imagination how such an exhausted, stressed mother looks. I didn’t even realise how depleted I was until he moved to Bayis Sheli. I am much more rested, happier and more available for my family now.

How was the transition for Doniel?

So were your other children relieved after his move?

Surprisingly, not necessarily. Doniel was never a destructive violent child, he would never grab their toys or hurt them, so they loved to cuddle and hang out with him on the couch and they really miss having him around. Those closer to him in age were initially really homesick for him, complaining, ‘When’s Doniel coming home?

He’s my brother; I also miss him.’ For me, it was heartbreaking when he left.

We go every Sunday to visit him and play with him in Bayis Sheli’s enormous fun place and it’s a much anticipated trip.

Can you walk us through a typical day for Doniel at his new home?

He has a daily routine which works very well for him. He is woken up and dressed, given his epilepsy medication, bussed to Side by Side school and when he comes home, someone plays with him, feeds and baths him and he goes to bed. We decorated his room with huge colourful

The first few weeks, he wasn’t happy, which is normal. It was unfamiliar, it was a new routine and as with anyone of anyone age, it takes getting used to. I was even nervous how he’d take to his new bed. Bed was always his safe corner and it was filled with his favourite toys. A few weeks later when I visited, I was so relieved to see that he was content and playing in his bed with his toys, still enjoying bed as his little haven, even if it was elsewhere. Then, after a few months, he was happily greeting and recognising his carers and staff who shower him with amazing love and care; seeing that, was a huge nechama for me.

If not for Bayis Sheli, he would have had to go to a non-Jewish home which would have been wrenching. In fact, I probably wouldn’t have done it and that would have been completely destructive to me and my family.

How was the general process in getting in to the home?

Baruch Hashem, the government paperwork went very smoothly and it took only a few months. It was all full of hashgacha. Our Rov told

Yes. There were a few. For example, it was always a huge job to get Doniel a haircut and he needed one often as his hair grew quickly. I used to call someone to our house to do it. The first time Bayis Sheli gave him a haircut, he looked so clean and fresh and well cared for, I was taken aback that someone else was taking such wonderful care of him.

Then, I was making bar mitzvah for my other son and I let Bayis Sheli know about it a month in advance. The week before the bar mitzvah I came to visit I told them that I wanted to buy him a nice new suit for the simcha. They casually informed me, ‘Oh, we’ve already bought him one!’ and they brought out a beautiful suit. I was totally overwhelmed, I burst into tears. I could not believe it was possible to possess such sensitivity and concern. Who thinks of that besides a mother? They didn’t see the big deal, saying they just wanted him to look nice for his brother’s bar mitzva. Seriously, if there was ever a defining moment, that was theirs!

That is beautiful. Before closing, is there anything you’d like the community to know?

When Bayis Sheli tells me that people came to visit my son on Shabbos, that is most heartwarming, because if he can’t be with his family, then at least he should have the atmosphere of Shabbos.

Having a child with special needs is very demanding. It permeates every part of your life. Even things like building a sukkah raises questions as to how big the doorway should be for the wheelchair and how many guests you can fit inside once you reckon the big wheelchair.

Family simchas have to be well orchestrated too.

Someone has to be with your special needs child so that you can take part in something as simple but significant as family pictures.

Bear that in mind and perhaps give a family respite by taking their child in for a Shabbos or Yom Tov. Seeing first-hand what their family endures, what with pulled-off tablecloths and not a moment of sleep, you will feel more indebted to Bayis Sheli for being around when you are not available.

DARK TAPESTRY

Detective Inspector Sommers had avoided going to the Orthodox neighbourhood for over ten years. He had moved to a nonreligious area to the north of Golders Green, where no Jews lived since there was no community to serve them.

He had applied for a transfer to the local constabulary even further out, in rural Halford Village, but the Golders Green branch had put the spokes in. His immediate superior, Detective Chief Inspector Roger Willis, had called him into his office one day and told him outright that he would oppose the transfer request.

“But why, Roger?”

“We need you here, lad. You’re the youngest D.I. we’ve ever had and probably the best, and you’d be totally wasted in Halford Village. For heaven’s sake, man, the nearest you’ll get to a serious crime out there is some old biddy’s cat going missing.”

“Maybe I want a peaceful life,” Colin had protested. “And anyway, if Agatha Christie is to be believed, the most heinous murders happen in little rural English villages.”

“Well, for a start, Agatha Christie talked a lot of rubbish most of the time, and anyway, Goldbergs Green” — he deliberately used the misnomer, making Colin wince — “is hardly the hotbed of London’s criminal fraternity, is it. We haven’t had a good murder here since that chemist did away with his brother- in-law by slipping powdered cyanide into his instant coffee.”

Despite himself, Colin grinned. He had read about the case in the archives.

“Thing is, lad, we need you. And they don’t.”

So Colin had stayed, but he’d made jolly sure he avoided going into the ghetto that made up his past if at all possible. Though the police station served that area, it also served other, less religious neighborhoods in North West London, and to these neighborhoods Colin was content to divert his attention, giving the Golders Green patch to Sergeant Peter White. Colin was happy to give White the benefit of his experience when cultural or religious matters came up, although he always spoke as if he had never been part of the culture himself. He instructed White on not ringing doorbells on Saturdays (“They’ll probably have the timer on, and it won’t ring — better just knock”), on not telephoning on Saturdays or Jewish holidays or expecting the Orthodox Jewish residents to phone the station then. When White asked him how he knew so much about Jewish culture, Sommers would always answer, “Used to live next door to some when I was little. Used to go round their place to play.”

Colin Sommers never admitted to anyone in the police force that he was Jewish. It was not something he wanted to think DO YOU A SHAILA? ASK THE proud federation about, notHAVE something he was particularly of, and he

had noticed some undercurrents of antisemitism among his colleagues, especially when discussing the wealthier Golders Green inhabitants.

“Huge great big houses they got, some of them. I been inside.

Furnishings like you wouldn’t believe. Something out of a magazine. Kitchens bigger than my whole flat. And they come whining to us when the third of their silver candlesticks gets nicked. Diddums.”

“Crime is crime,” Sommers defended. “If it’s a wino or the Queen. Still a crime.”

Deep down he felt half guilty and half angry at his people for their overt displays of wealth. Words rang in his ears, words from his youth, words he tried — and failed — to forget.

“You Jews think you’re so much better than the rest of us.”

“No, we don’t!” he had protested defensively.

“Yes, you do. Otherwise, why won’t you marry non-Jews?

And why do you live in such posh houses and have so much money?”

“Not all of us have money. And anyway, we give a lot of charity,” he had responded lamely, but the other had snorted derisively. For him the case was proven and closed.

Colin had never forgotten that exchange and his total helplessness at replying to it. Maybe they did think themselves better than anyone else. Maybe this was all the more reason for cutting himself off from them. He reasoned his own doubts away, and he was comforted.

Detective Inspector Sommers was only twenty-six years old, young to have achieved that level of promotion, a prodigy. His peers in police academy had called him a swot; his senior officers and teachers had called him a fast learner and a dedicated and gifted student. His mother had once described him as her “genius,” but he firmly pushed that out of his head.

Anything that reminded him of his roots had been given a large dose of weed killer. Besides, it wasn’t true. He knew he wasn’t a genius or even gifted. He was a methodical and ploddingly determined student, determined to do well and achieve. Most of his fellow students did the minimum to get by; he went the full route.

Now Colin lived a totally secular life. His girlfriend, Lucy, wasn’t Jewish, and he had never shared with her the secrets of his past. They spent their free time, which wasn’t much, together. Lucy was a journalist on the local newspaper and was given to interesting stretches of imagination when interviewing her “victims,” who were generally local wannabe celebrities. Her latest piece had been about an elderly man who had self-published his memoirs. He had been told at a writing circle he attended weekly, where he bored the other members reading out a chapter each session, that memoirs were only fascinating if they referred to someone famous, and that his, about a nondescript sort of life, coming of age in63

World War II, would be of little interest. Undaunted, he carried on and used his life savings to publish the book himself. As a result, he had no distributor, so he carted suitcases of the masterpiece around with him wherever he went and accosted total strangers with heavy sales talk until they either fled in panic or bought a copy just to shut him up.

Finding herself in agreement with the general public about the book itself, Lucy took the human interest angle and made a fascinating study of an old man who was determined to be a writer against all odds. The old man was a great character; his inability to write did not detract from his endearing nature and eccentric ways. The book was almost incidental to the piece itself, but Lucy knew that a bit of publicity in the right places never came amiss, so she gave it the best write-up she could while staying precariously just this side of the truth.

Lucy was a sharp, intelligent, and extremely talented journalist, probably wasted on the local rag. But she liked it because it gave her a certain amount of freedom of expression and also freedom from the dog-eat-dog world she knew she would encounter in the higher echelons of the national press. She would have probably been at her best doing an investigative piece into a murder or miscarriage of justice, but those were thin on the ground in Golders Green, and she had only been on the editorial staff a year, having moved up to those giddy heights from the slush pool of copy typists who eked their lives out entering data into computers.

For Lucy Colin had invented a past, one he liked better than his own, and this was the past he’d shared with her. Aside from his distaste for getting drunk on his night off, he displayed not a single inherent Jewish characteristic. He was working on the drinking; it seemed both churlish and prudish to keep refusing to join in the off-duty revelry down at the pub. He might yet conquer this final Jewish inhibition.

He drove toward the Hardmans’ slowly, driving unwillingly into his own past. In the back seat of the car was a forensic man called Joe Willers who was expert in collecting and analyzing evidence. Joe never said much, which normally suited Colin just fine. Right now, though, he needed to be distracted from his disturbing thoughts. Looking at the familiar yet alien streets, his mind drifted inexorably into memories that made him intensely uncomfortable. The men in the street, blackhatted, dark-suited, and bearded; the women, long-skirted, bewigged, some elegant, some frumpy, all modestly attired.

And children. Preschoolers, toddlers, babies everywhere.

In the nonreligious or non-Jewish neighborhoods, there weren’t nearly so many kids, thought Colin. He supposed the Hardmans also had a houseful of screaming kids. Probably had to do a role call to find out one was missing. He gave a cynical sneer as he drove slowly through Golders Green.

The Hardmans’ house surprised him. It was on the large side, granted, but it had none of the trappings of luxury.

Unencumbered by large metal security fences, tall hedges, or long paths, it stood on a corner, exposed, its front door opening almost directly onto the pavement. A simple, tidy but unmanicured garden could be viewed through an old side gate.

The only sign that children lived there was a small bicycle lying on its side on the lawn. In the front, neatly pruned rosebushes burgeoned upward, ready for their summer’s blooming.

Stepping the few inches from pavement to front door, Colin Sommers rang the bell. His inner mind registered the mezuzah.

His conscious mind refused to acknowledge it. Joe stood reverently a few paces behind him, whistling quietly to himself.

The door was opened at once by a red-eyed and tearful woman, young, wearing a cotton T-shirt and long skirt, her hair — no, her wig — was shoulder length and slightly mussed.

“Detective Sommers?” she asked. When he nodded, her relief was palpable, as if his very presence was proof of the end of the nightmare being in sight. She looked at Joe. “This is Sergeant Willers. He’s our forensic man.” Again the woman looked pathetically grateful when she saw Joe’s steel briefcase with its hidden mysteries, which were, to her eyes, just waiting to solve everything at one stroke.

If only that were true, he thought ruefully as they stepped into a decidedly nonglamorous hallway and living room. Well furnished and comfortable, yes. Functional, certainly. But luxurious, expensive, glamorous, certainly not. The two men sat down as bidden on a battered-looking leather sofa.

A tall, dark-haired man came into the room, handsome, wearing glasses and a short dark beard, neatly trimmed. Colin stood up again, not an easy feat from that soft, squishy sofa.

Joe remained seated, staring into space, as if manners were not part of his brief.

“Don Hardman. How do you do?” An accent. Where from? The United States? Canada? They shook hands. Colin introduced Joe and sat down again. Don took a dining-room chair, turning it from the table to face them. The wife did likewise, twisting a bunch of sodden tissues in her lap with white-knuckled fingers.

“I know the last thing you want to do at this moment is fill in a form,” Colin began, “but it’s policy, and it helps us with details we might otherwise forget, like a full description, any distinguishing marks, whether he wore glasses or not, a watch.

We’ll also want to know who saw him last, what clothes he was last wearing, and, of course, a recent photograph if you have one. I can help you fill it in if you don’t feel capable.”

“Yes, please,” Ilana said. “I don’t think I could write a straight word at the moment.”
