June - August 2023
Welcome to the Winter edition of the “Encore” magazine. We’re delighted to share with you a packed program of events as we go into the cooler months. Once again, it’s filled with information on everything the Juniors Group of Clubs has to offer across our three venues. What better way to be entertained than at The Juniors with great food, quality live entertainment and all the Rabbitohs action on our big screens. We look forward to seeing you at The Juniors soon.
VALE John Sattler
It is with great sadness that I report the recent passing of Rabbitohs Legend John Sattler. However, for us all it serves as a reminder of what a great man he was not only on the field but perhaps more importantly off the field. The era of the late 60s early 70s stands high in the order of Rabbitohs folklore. John Sattler was our leader followed by other greats of the game and all South’s Juniors in Ron Coote, Bob McCarthy, George Piggins, Gary Stevens and Paul Sait.
We had the great honour of hosting a tribute dinner for John Sattler a few years ago, celebrated prior to his decline in health. It has been an absolute pleasure to share in celebrating his great life with the Rabbitohs including welcoming back to the club family, legends and VIPs following the spreading of his ashes at Redfern Oval on Friday 21st April.
Vale John Sattler – you will be always treasured and deeply missed.
Souths Juniors will launch their Foundation at a gala dinner in July. It will focus on five key areas of our junior league to enhance what we already provide for this community.
These include The Junior Bunnies Academy, Elite Player Development, Female Participation and Pathways, our local A-Grade competition and a Brain Health Awareness and Return to Play Program.
We look forward to providing more updates as we bring this to a reality. Limited foundation memberships will be available for members and are expected to be advertised in the lead up to the launch.
What a great start to the season for the mighty Rabbitohs! With several games being played away in the upcoming months there is no better place to watch the games than in the Henry Morris Sports Bar on the big screen. Without a doubt other than the Grand Final and our matches against The Roosters, the State of Origin is a period to be enjoyed by all.
We take great pride in promoting Origin and proudly cheer on the Mighty Blues. Hopefully we will see some Rabbitohs in the team. At the time of going to print we are certainly a chance to have a few Rabbitohs alongside our Skipper Cam Murray in the team.
We have included a new section in the magazine which showcases some of the great work we are doing out in the community. As many of you will know The Juniors have been supporting the community above and beyond for many years. We have also started a LinkedIn page where we will be sharing some of the great community initiatives. Please take a look and be sure to follow us on LinkedIn.
Best Regards,
Keith McCraw PRESIDENT

Earlier this year The Juniors Fitness Centre underwent a $500k renovation with all new state-of-the-art equipment purchased and installed for their members.
A decision was made by the Board of Directors and Management to donate this equipment to local groups and schools that could utilise this equipment still in great condition.
Several clubs and schools were more than happy to put their hand up for equipment that would benefit their clients and students. These included:
• South Sydney High School
• Randwick Girls High School
• JJ Cahill High School
• Clovelly Surf Club
• PCYC Daceyville
• PCYC Bankstown
Our Marketing Manager recently visited all the above groups to see how the equipment was being utilised and was amazed at how grateful the kids and groups were for the equipment and a difference it is making to their fitness programs. In some instances, new gyms areas were being developed based on the equipment they received. It has been a fantastic exercise to give back to the community and have the old equipment used for a range of great outcomes as can be seen in the photos.
The Junior League season kicked off at the beginning of April. Across our 16 clubs we have over 2,800 Players registered. We have seen significant growth in comparison to where we were at this stage last year. This number will increase to over 3,000 as we get towards the June 30th registration cut off. There is a great mix of female and male competitions again this year and our season is set up to be a great success.
The Juniors Group of Clubs proudly supports Souths Juniors and funds players from 6 years - adults to play Rugby League for free. We believe we truly support grassroots Rugby League and are a leading organisation in junior sport.
Therefore, it makes perfect sense to establish the Souths Juniors Foundation which is currently being set-up to continue to provide these opportunities and improve on what we currently do.
The foundation will consist of five key pillars:
• Junior Bunnies Academy
• Elite Player Development
• Female Participation and Pathways
• Souths Juniors A Grade Competition
• Brain-Health Awareness and Return to Play Program
The foundation will have a group of high-profile Rugby League ambassadors and will be officially launched on 14th July.
More information will be announced shortly on how our members can be involved as foundation members.
Earlier this year, Souths Juniors and NeuroFlex held a media conference to launch a partnership in trialling new technology at all their Junior League clubs as part of the 5th pillar of the Foundation – Brain-Health Awareness and Return to Play Program.
South Sydney Juniors President, Keith McCraw has said“We are excited to provide our community with the opportunity of base line testing. It will provide parents and players peace of mind for when they can return to play or other activities.”
The technology uses virtual reality connected to a powerful laptop to perform a series of eye-tracking and head movement tests to assess your brain health. Players can perform a NeuroFlex test in about eight minutes to establish a baseline – a data set that will show what their brain looks like in its healthy state.
If the player subsequently suffers a head knock, they can be retested with NeuroFlex to accurately assess the full effects of the concussion and to see how much their new test data differs from their baseline. This data can be used by teams to create a personal recovery plan so the player can make a safe return to the field.
NeuroFlex has already been successfully trialled in the South Australian Football League, the 2023 Super Rugby Union competition and the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup. Adopting a technology like NeuroFlex means clubs can take a proactive approach to the issue of head injuries and assessment rather than a reactive one. With the knowledge that NeuroFlex provides, it is now possible to paint an accurate picture of a player’s brain health and, if they suffer a head knock, they can see the variations when compared to their baseline.
This helps clubs make a more informed decision when determine when a player can return to play again. At the very least NeuroFlex can provide peace of mind knowing you have all the information you need to make the right choice about playing or sitting the game out.
The Juniors Group of Clubs have proudly been a major supporter of UNSW Football Club for the fourth consecutive year. It is a partnership we are immensely proud of which extends across the Men and Womens’ National Premier League and the Eastern Suburbs Football Association.
In total we support over 250 junior players and over 300 parents including an additional 300 players over 18 in the Eastern Suburbs Football Association.
Our support assists in establishing a clear pathway for players to progress through the grades and is a perfect alignment with our neighbors at the UNSW.
The Juniors also offers their facilities In-Kind for team get togethers and pre and post season events.

The Screaming Jets have been an enduring rock force in the Australian music landscape for over 3 decades. In 1990 these five blokes from Newcastle took the Aussie music scene by the scruff of the neck and gave a red-hot shake.
Affectionately known as Australia’s ‘Last Great Pub Rock Band’, the Jets live show never disappoints, and as a result they have built a devoted, die-hard live fan base across Australia and the world. From their humble beginnings in Newcastle, New South Wales in 1989, their 30 plus years in the Oz music biz has not slowed down The Screaming Jets and their hunger to make great rock music and entertain their fans.
