As we prepare to celebrate the holidays, it’s important to take the time to consider the best ways to give back, not just to our friends and family, but to our community as a whole.
There are so many ways to contribute, from volunteering for a charity, beach cleanup or toy drive, or donating your time or money to one of the many local organizations that focus on helping neighbors in need. See our story about opportunities to help on Page 16.
Another way to contribute to the community is to shop local, purchasing items that are locally sourced and made. We are lucky to have many small businesses in our area that offer unique items that you just can’t get at the big box stores or online. See some of our curated recommendations on Pages 30 and 32.
There are, of course, holiday celebrations and family friendly events that celebrate the season. Whether you’re hosting or joining as a guest, consider some locally made foods and beverages that will bring a smile to everyone’s faces. Find out about some local favorites on Page 10.
And, finally, we hope that you’ll consider giving our advertising partners an opportunity to wow you with their quality products and services. They are the engine that keeps our econony humming and they, too, could use your support.
Happy holidays to you and yours, and we’ll see you again in the new year.

Since you’re already living in Paradise, why not share some of it with Northern friends on your gift list.
We’re not really saying anything about rubbing their noses in the fact that we’re still wearing beach coverups and flip flops while they’re choosing new winter coats. But if the snow boots fit...
There are plenty of local producers, too, who can offer quality goods to satisfy even picky people on your list.
Little known on the coast: Florida is one of the nation’s big beef producers. Its grass-fed meats and byproducts are prized among certain diners for their non-grain makeup. If you don’t want to buy and ship fresh meats, check out the jerky from the Painted Quarters Ranch in Indiantown. Sold at the Hobe Sound Farmers Market on the weekends, their preservative-free, all-meat jerky is $10 for a 19-ounce package. Also find here their jarred soup mixes, a variety of local fruit jams and their famous barbecue sauce. Online at Paintedquarterscattlecompany.com
Florida honey is recognized worldwide for its bright flavors and wide variety of flavors. Two excellent names in the bee business, Hani Honey in Fort Pierce, and McCoy’s Florida Honey in Loxahatchee, are sold in numerous shops and markets in the area. Both produce raw honey from fruits and flowers found in the Sunshine State. While tupelo is the revered pure honey from the North Central area, we’re partial to the slightly herbal gallberry honey from Hani Honey ($12 a pound). McCoy’s offers traditional sweet and citrusy orange blossom honey (it’s $15 a pound because of scarcity). The company’s saw palmetto honey is gathered from the berries of the Everglades plant, and holistic healers say it offers health benefits. Both honeys can be found at the Hobe Sound Farmers Market at the Nova Tea Company booth that sells their own blends, or online: Hanihoneycompany.com, and Mccoysfloridahoney.com.

We’re mad for coffee, and judging by all the roasters and shops in the area, you probably have bean lovers on your list. Get them a bag of Oceana Coffee straight from the original roasting house in Jupiter. Maybe you’ll bump into award-winning beanmaster Scott Angelo, who began his business with a hot air popper in his garage. He’s roasting today on a much bigger scale — and still winning contests. The first kitchen design Beth Hales remembers was at her grandparents’ home in Harbor Springs, Michigan: red Formica with white countertops.
Hales – who owns Custom Cabinet Designs in Tequesta – says Formica ruled the day back in the 1970s. Today it’s textured melamine.
“What is old is new again,” Hales said. “Everything will come back around eventually, like lighting under floating cabinets. That’s a big, huge thing right now.”
Hales, 54, prides herself on being hands-on and responsive to her clients’ desires. Her enthusiasm boils over.
“What are you thinking for door style and finish? Do you like contemporary? Do you like high gloss?
Do you want an inset?” Hales said. “And so they kind of tell me a little bit, and then I just start pulling out door samples.”
She flashes different types of cabinet styles like a magician showing playing cards, displaying a brushed-wire cabinet finish on two of them. But her showroom at 161 U.S. 1 is full of surprises.
“I have things hidden everywhere, just depending on what a client wants,” Hales said.
Want to see a metal drawer box? She just slides one out of a cabinet – it’s sleek and cool and contemporary. How about a no knob look? Well, there’s one right behind her with drawers that sit above the floor.
Why would you want to waste all that space? “It’s just for the look and people who are ultra-contem-
porary want that,” Hales said.
Even her quartzite work table with a lightning bolt accent is a display item, three inches thick with waterfall edges where the mitered stone flows over to the floor.
Hales’ profession may indeed have the finger on the zeitgeist. Superstar singer Chappell Roan penned her song “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl” after watching an Architectural Digest video.
Talking to Hales, one thing becomes clear, she is an artist. Her canvas is your kitchen and her pallet is more than paint, it includes fabulous new materials. At the front of her showroom is a stunning cabinet resembling a breakfast nook, painted watery blue topped with Cristallo quartzite and lighted from below. It glows – futuristic but still retro.
Hales has been in her space at Tequesta Shops for about 2½ years. Her competition is everywhere – across the street, down the block. She juggles about eight jobs at once.
Her canvas is your kitchen and her pallet is more than paint, it includes fabulous
new materials.
So how does one get to become a kitchen designer for spec homes in Admirals Cove? You pay your dues and love what you do.
A high school counselor encouraged Hales to go to art school. She left her tiny town in northern Michigan for the big city of Grand Rapids where Hales attended the Kendall College of Art and Design.
“I actually got my first degree in architectural drafting. I fell in love with drafting,” Hales said. “Put me in front of a drafting board with some vellum paper, and tell me to come up with a floor plan –I’m in heaven.”
After working at an architectural firm at age 21, Hales decided she needed more education in her field, wanting to get more into interior design. She took her grandmother’s map of the United States and closed her eyes and pointed.
“My finger landed on Atlanta. Within three months, I was enrolled in the American College of Applied Arts,” she said.
She took a kitchen design class as an elective. “I was like, bingo, this is what I want to do. I can help people pick out colors and countertops, I can help
Hales knew as soon as she took a kitchen design class in college that it was what she wanted to do.
people pick out materials,” Hales said. “This was a combination of architectural and interior design on a level that I liked.”
When she reimagined an Atlanta showroom of a local custom kitchen designer as part of an assignment, she landed a job.
Intent on leaving Atlanta before the 1996 Olympics, Hales ended up in Boca Raton with Ultimate Kitchen and Bath. She worked as a designer for a West Palm Beach cabinet maker then she opened up a showroom with one of her clients, developer M.J. Gildemeyer, before striking out on her own. Hales still adores the work after all these years in the business.
“It’s something different every day. It’s not a 9-to5 desk job. I get to deal with different people. Every kitchen is different. Everybody’s tastes are different,” she said.

The holiday season is one of the most anticipated times of the year, whether you’re celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, or gathering with friends.
If you are able to include your dog in the festivities, this can make these moments even more special.
Here are a few tips that I discuss with my clients to help them create a holiday season that’s memorable, and safe.
With guests arriving, doors will be opening quickly and frequently, creating opportunities for dogs to slip outside unnoticed.
Designate a secure area away from the door, or leash your dog, so that you can easily get them. This prevents any escape attempts!
Gift wrapping is a ton of fun, but most dogs see the ribbon, the bows, and the boxes as
either their toys, or something to be eaten.
The ribbons or string can be very dangerous, either wrapping around the intestines, or potentially causing a blockage, so please be mindful of this, and if you have children, it may be a great idea to have a quick “family meeting,” so that everyone is on board.
During the holidays, tables and counters are often filled with festive dishes that can be harmful to dogs.
• Latkes for Hanukkah: While delicious, latkes contain onions, which are toxic to dogs.
• Shellfish and Other Rich Foods: Shellfish is very toxic to
dogs, so if your family happens to do the “7 Fishes”, for instance, please consider what may be toxic to your dogs.
• Chocolate and Sweets: We all know about chocolate but what about some holiday candies that contain xylitol, or artificial sweeteners, which are very dangerous. By taking a few precautions, you’ll create a fantastic and fun holiday season.
If you have any questions about how to make this holiday season even safer for your dog, please email via our website www.alphadogtraining.co or call (732) 890-3456 .
Wishing you and your family, a beautiful and festive Holiday Season!

Wide plank wood flooring is all the rage in the Jupiter area in recent years, transforming spaces with its rustic charm and modern appeal. This trend is not just a passing fad; it reflects a broader shift in interior design preferences that prioritize natural materials, sustainability, and a connection to outdoor living spaces.
One of the primary reasons wide plank flooring is in vogue is its aesthetic versatility. Unlike traditional narrow planks, wide boards create a more expansive and cohesive look, making spaces appear larger and more open. The broad surface area showcases the natural grain and character of the wood, adding warmth and depth to any room. Homeowners and designers appreciate the unique patterns and textures that come with each plank, ensuring that no two floors are identical. This uniqueness lends a sense of authenticity and personality to interiors, appealing to those who seek a bespoke design.
Moreover, wide plank wood flooring aligns with the growing trend towards sustainable living. All manufacturers now source their wood from responsibly managed forests. And the longevity of hardwood flooring means that it can be a long-term investment, offering both durability and timeless
beauty. This commitment to sustainability resonates with eco-conscious consumers who want their homes to reflect their values.
Functionality is another significant advantage of wide plank flooring. Engineered planks tend to be more stable and less prone to warping or buckling, particularly in areas with fluctuating humidity levels. This durability makes them suitable for various environments. Also, maintenance is often simplified; fewer seams mean less dirt and debris accumulation, making cleaning more efficient.
The trend toward open concept living spaces has also played a pivotal role in the rise of wide plank flooring. As homes become more integrated and communal, the seamless transition between rooms provided by wide planks enhances the overall flow and connectivity. Wide planks can adapt to any style, bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary design.
As Jupiter-area homeowners increasingly prioritize spaces that reflect their personal style and values, wide plank flooring is set to remain a favored choice in interior design for years to come.

The holiday season, while joyous, often brings with it a unique set of physical and emotional challenges. From the stress of last-minute shopping to the physical strain of decorating, cooking, and traveling, many people find themselves overwhelmed. Chiropractic care can play a crucial role in reducing holiday-related stress, preventing injury, and ensuring comfort during the busiest time of the year.
Between family gatherings, shopping, and other commitments, it’s easy to become physically and mentally worn out. Stress can manifest in the body in various ways—muscle tension, headaches, back pain, and poor sleep are common during this time.
Chiropractic adjustments help reduce tension in the spine and surrounding muscles, promoting relaxation and a sense of well-being. When receiving regular chiropractic care, the nervous system can function optimally by reducing stress levels, improving mental clarity and sleep; all of which are essential for maintaining energy and focus during the holidays. By addressing the root causes of physical discomfort, chiropractic care helps you better manage stress, leaving you more balanced to enjoy the season.
The holiday season isn’t just stressful—it can be physically demanding as well. Decorating the house, carrying heavy shopping bags, or spending hours on your feet while cooking can lead to strain and injury. Even seemingly simple tasks like bending over to wrap presents or standing for long periods at holiday parties can take a toll on your body.
Chiropractors often advise patients on ergonomic practices to minimize the risk of strain during holiday activities. Whether it’s lifting heavy boxes of decorations, hanging up holiday lights, or spending long hours standing, maintaining proper posture and body mechanics is key to avoiding injury. Regular chiropractic care throughout the season can help you stay pain-free and physically prepared for the
Chiropractors often advise patients on ergonomic practices to minimize the risk of strain during holiday activities.
A chiropractor can assess your posture, provide adjustments to relieve tension, and recommend exercises to strengthen your core and improve flexibility. Combining all of these factors together can help prevent holiday related injuries by ensuring your body is functioning optimally.
Dr. Marlin Meldonian, of Marlin Chiropractic, helps some of the world’s top bodybuilders, golfers, and pickleballers perform at their best.
For many, holiday travel is a tradition, whether it’s visiting family or taking a vacation. However, long car rides or cramped airplane seats can wreak havoc on your back and neck. Sitting in one position for extended periods can lead to stiffness, soreness, and discomfort, especially if your posture is poor.
Chiropractic care before and after your trip can help you stay comfortable on the go. We may also recommend specific stretches and exercises to keep your muscles loose and prevent stiffness while traveling. If you’re driving, take frequent breaks to stretch your legs and back. If flying, use a travel pillow to support your neck and keep your spine aligned while sitting. By prioritizing your spinal health, you can give your body the gift of wellness and fully enjoy the spirit of the season.

Let’s Paddle the tranquil waters of Sawfish Bay! Located at the south end of the A1A Bridge, Sawfish Bay Park is the ideal launch for beginners and families. It is a linear park with covered picnic tables at the south end, a restroom and water fountain along the concrete path overlooking the water and a kayak and paddleboard launch on the north end. The immediate area is a no wake zone and for the most part, boat traffic does not venture into Sawfish Bay due to its shallow depth. Sawfish Bay became the downtown of Jupiter in the 1890s due to its proximity to the Florida Eastern Railroad; now it is a serene place to paddle, even on a busy boating day. The launch, located at the north end of the park has a convenient equipment drop off roundabout. Once you unload your equipment and park your car in the
designated parking spaces you are ready for a tranquil adventure.
The beach launch is rocky but its location in a no wake zone makes for a peaceful entry. This park is popular for fishing, so keep an eye out for fishing lines cast from the seawall. Taking an immediate right from the launch takes you into Sawfish Bay, named after the now endangered species of fish that once flourished there. Paddling along Sawfish Island takes you to one of two entrances, each leading out to the other end of the island. The best part? The mangrove tunnel dug between the two entrance lagoons teaming with various bird species and manatee on occasion. Sawfish Island is for paddling only, no motor traffic is permitted, and picnic tables are provided at both entrances for a land break.
Continuing south is Fullerton Island, most recently
renamed Mayor Karen J Golonka Island, who succeeded in making it an environmental conservation area. The entrance to this island is in the northeast section where a rocky entrance leads you into a tight left turn into the lagoon. Docking for motorboats is available but they are restricted from going past the docks. This island is for passive recreation, you are to remain in your vessel unless you are in the designated recreation area located adjacent to the boat dock with picnic tables for your use. Both islands are ideal on a busy day of boat traffic! You can catch a glimpse of the Intracoastal yet still enjoy a calm paddle inside the island. As you return to Sawfish Bay Park, complete your serene adventure by paddling behind the islands to avoid boat traffic. You can catch blue water at an incoming tide right at the launch where you will see green turtles, manatees, stingrays and a variety of fish species or enjoy the sandbar covered with nine-armed starfish, hermit crabs and sea snails at low tide; Sawfish Bay offers serenity no matter the tide or boat traffic.
