Spring is here, it’s one of my favourite times of the year. New possibilities and new beginnings plus it’s always amazing to see mother nature put on a display of colour as new shoots and blooms emerge.
As we head into the last quarter of 2023, there is still plenty to come this year! Our local Pinefest is just around the corner Being a Yeppoon girl at heart, this is my favourite local festival. Keep an eye out for updates on the local Yeppoon Lions Facebook page for this year ’ s events and parade.
The walk for wellbeing is about 6 weeks away now. The time has come quickly this year! So far we have just over 50 walkers registered and are still taking registrations So head on over to the Facebook event page and register yourself and your mates.
This month we have some great columns for you to read and we welcome Dr Alison Jones who will be contributing a monthly column for the rest of the year sharing her knowledge and wisdom of our local reef and how we can protect it
There is lots of food for thought in this month’s stories and columns from our regular contributors. We are lucky to have access to such a variety of therapies and modalities here on the coast
Until next month, may your September be as awesome as you!
My name is Kelly Vains and I am an Arts/Sandplay Therapist and a Spiritual and Energetic healer I am also a creative and Visual Artist, which lead me into this work at a time in my life when I was seeking direction and a deeper soul purpose Creativity has always been an integral part of who I am and how I operate in the world, so when I found Art Therapy, I thought wonderful! Now I can weave the power of creativity into supporting and helping others
Now I have landed back in Yeppoon and just opened my little business FelkEather on James St offering Sandplay for children, and Holistic Healing for adults. I grew up here and my parents still live here, so it's nice to be back in 'Paradise' as my mum calls it. I've spent a lot of time exploring other places, living overseas and travelling the globe, and I actually did not know that I would be back to birth my business in this beautiful community, but as always, it seems the universe knew the plan all along! I'm very grateful to be back 'home' in every sense of the word.
What I'm most passionate about with this work is deeply supporting others to move towards physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing, and to facilitate and generate greater insight and awareness of self. I always feel very honoured to witness someone's
process and support them safely on their journey I'm also a big kid which is why I love play and working with children! We now live in a very overstimulating world, with hyper vigilant nervous systems, that carry energetic traumas, and burdens, that we just don't have the right understanding or tools to navigate This can cause imbalances in our life on many different levels, that disrupt our wellbeing and sense of purpose Our children especially need support, and a safe avenue to express their feelings and personal experience, especially when they don't feel heard or can't easily articulate or even understand their emotions Behaviour is children's language, but it often gets misinterpreted, so it's important we give children the opportunity for non-judgemental self expression, to support them to make meaning of their inner and outer worlds
Sandplay sessions involve spontaneous, imaginative play, with individually chosen miniatures to support the expression and externalisation of a child's feelings The safe, supportive container of the therapy space, gives the child the opportunity to be witnessed, and present their own issues in the tray, often to proceed and process the situation to resolve on their own through the sensory, storytelling experience.
Committing to regular sessions in this space is always of great benefit to really instigate, and promote lasting change. When you make the commitment to you or your child's personal growth, transformation can happen. Consistency is key, and I'm also a big advocate of empowering people with learning individualised tools, so they can continue to support their wellbeing outside the therapy space, and learn how to regulate effectively on their own. I believe learning and gathering suitable, aligned tools for our personal tool kit, is paramount to the effectiveness of the healing process This is especially true for sensitives, and empaths, who can get 'energetically bumped' daily without the correct tools
People can contact me through my website www felkeather com I offer a free 15 minute Discovery Call for anyone who would like to connect and discuss current issues, or has questions about how I can support their needs
I identify as a highly sensitive person, intuitive and empath who struggled most of my life, often overwhelmed and bumped around like I was in an 'energetic washing machine' everyday, until I learnt I was a HSP and that I needed certain important tools to support my sensitive nature. This process also taught me that being sensitive is not bad, as the world often made me out to be, but that I had deep, sensitive, powerful gifts that needed to be nurtured and acknowledged This journey back to myself deepened my sense of purpose, and I now use these intuitive gifts in my role as a facilitator and healer There are many sensitive souls out there, especially c
Yeppoon, and our entire coastal region, is experiencing an exciting era of growth Many young families are making their way here, seeking an affordable and enjoyable lifestyle Despite having an array of leisure, sporting and cultural outlets for people to enjoy, this region does not have a dedicated Toy Library Toy Libraries can be found all around Australia, in many different forms Our dream is to have a dedicated indoor building space, that contains a large inventory of toys, educational games, therapy aids, costumes, and more Imagine a child walking into a bright colourful room where there are so many amazing toys, browsing the aisles with a loving carer, filling their special Toy Library bag with a few wonderful play things, and then returning a week or two later to do it all again Mums, dads and grandparents getting to know each other and share parenting tips, or just a knowing look when their kidheads for the toy drums again (Remember – you don’t have to keep them!)
A Toy Library can become a place for new parents to find a moment of sanity (okay, not with the drums), a central place for families to network or learn about other community services, and even a space for children’s edutainment or workshops Dedicated volunteers and staff can help encourage parents and carers to initiate regular targeted play to help develop fine and gross motor skills, problem solving, creative and social skills, laying important foundations in those early learning years
Our Toy Library will champion the idea of purchasing ethical toys, as well as reusing preloved toys, helping to reduce plastic toy waste in our environment And finally, many family budgets are being stripped back The financial burden of providing our children with toys, games, educational and therapy aids can be alleviated by joining a Toy Library,
On Friday the 7 th July 2023, a small group of women gathered at the Spinnaker restaurant, around dinnertime To fellow patrons, they would have assumed it was a social get-together among friends, perhapsfor a birthday Looking more closely though, they would have noticed the papers, laptops and pens spread along the table Water yes, food no This was business This was a historical occasion These 8 women were founding the Capricorn Coast Toy Library, a future resource that will have so many benefits and positive impacts across this region, especially for families
Anyone who has set up an Incorporated not-for-profit organisation will know that it is a tedious process, but it is essential to create solid building blocks for any group that want to help their community Not only have we elected a founding executive committee, and made the necessary legal notes for applyingfor Incorporated status with the State Government, but we have adopted a set of constitutional rules ( a 23 page booklet no less) that will help guide this organisation well into the future, hopefully decades.
This journey started two years ago when Jillian, hanging out with bubba #4, was reminiscing about the amazing Toy Library her three older children had access to when the family lived in the N T On a whim, she started a Facebook group to gauge interest in the local area We now have over 230 followers (and we don’t even offer a service yet) 98% are women, and 70% of these are between 25-44 years old, indicating the strong need for a service like this for parents with young children The next most common group are women who are 45 – 65 years old, so likely parents with primary aged children and also grandparents, as well as professionals who work in the education or allied health industry. Less than 2% are between 18-24 years old, however young mothers would be an important group to target in the future with alternative social media or in collaboration with other community services
Jillian Neyland (our newly minted President) has a background in science and environmental education and has always been involved with community organisations and events. At the beginning of 2023, she received a scholarship to participate in a 13 week social enterprise upskilling program called iActivate, run through CQU and Impact Boom. This opportunity really kick-started the next step for developing the Toy Library. Suzy Kriedemann (Founding Treasurer) and Mary Wilson (Founding Secretary) have come on board and bring with them years of experience in business, finance, governance, and early childhood and special needs education
We are also so excited at the depth of passion and experience our remaining founding members bring to our fledgling organisation Our dream team are education and allied health professionals, and several have had experiences through other regional Toy Libraries Many other local organisations have indicated their willingness to support our journey through in kind services and supportive gestures, and we certainly hope many more local businesses and organisations can jump in to help too These include Toy Libraries Australia, Yeppoon & District Kindergarten, Keppel Coast Girl Guides, Upcycle, Keppel Kids Playgroup, The Yeppoon Show Society, Yeppoon Choral Society, Livingstone Shire Council (Community Engagement), Michelle Landry, and The Hub Capricorn Coast Online Magazine We would love a corporate sponsor
Our aim is that we can sell 2024 Capricorn Coast Toy Library memberships in the lead up to this Christmas, and that our borrowing service will be operational early next year. There are three key things that the Capricorn Coast community can help us with. We need a space, preferably to operate part time out of, but just a storage space would help to start with. A Toy Library can encourage a certain demographic traffic so perhaps you can see your business benefitting from sharing a space with a Toy Library? We need donations (good quality second hand toys, plus money to buy toys and other storage and operating equipment, possibly a lease). And finally, we need locals to get behind us and buy memberships when these go on sale. We know these a big ticket items, but we are confident that the Capricorn Coast Toy Library will be an amazing asset to Yeppoon and the coast.
You can find us of Facebook. Any queries can be directed to Jillian at ccctoylibrary@gmail.com
Saturday 26th August saw the pre-launch of Intra-Mind’s charity “Stop the Rot”. A boot camp held in conjunction with Fitstop Yeppoon at Swan Park saw a great turn out in support of Men’s Mental Health.
Tim Chan from Intra-Mind is in the process of setting up the charity which will launch early in 2024. Alarmed by the high number of male suicide rates in the building and medical industry, Tim is keen to make a difference in how men ’ s mental health is supported and discussed.
By normalising the fact that everyone has “issues” and working on a mindset shift of moving before Netflix, Tim anticipates that Stop the Rot will have an impact in reducing suicide rates “Why are we trying to look perfect in our lives to others who aren’t perfect?” Tim said while speaking about his plans for the charity
The state of our mental health needs to become a normal part of a conversation, not an embarrassing one How many of us really know how to have the conversation beyond asking the “Are you OK question?”
There are a few key events coming up in preparation for the charity’s launch Be sure to follow Tim on his Intra-Mind Facebook page to keep up to date

Spending much of her adult life searching for answers on how to heal to feel better, from life’s general stresses to major health concerns trying a variety of western and eastern practices, you name it, Sophia has probably tried it It has been through this journey that she has found some of those answers fuelling her obsession with this field of work and propelling her to a place where she can now share with others
A session with Sophia is tailored to meet individual clients exactly where they are at so that they can be supported to feel safe and empowered to reach their goals/intentions for the session so that it becomes a transformative experience for them. Clients receive additional resources and information for integration after their sessions.
Some of the benefits that come from working with Sophia include trauma release, nervous system regulation, emotional healing, stress and anxiety relief, enhanced resilience and improved self awareness.

We can’t wait to share this day with our local community and get out enjoy the fresh air and soak in the beautiful sights we have here on the Capricorn Coast but may take for granted in the busyness of our day to day lives
Vicarious trauma can be caused from hearing about others’ trauma It can not only be done via listening to friends and family but through social media and media With all the news about fires in the world and our local community and country having experienced fires it can trigger trauma
It can be felt physically, emotionally, or both It can create dramatic emotional responses in us from self-denial to unpredictable mood swings, flashbacks, and other symptoms
Symptoms can come in a variety of forms Bad dreams, hypervigilance, anxiety, grief, anger, sadness, avoidance of places and situations, doomscrolling (on the topic), loss of hope and psychological symptoms such as headaches, heartburn and ulcers. Ways to help with second hand trauma; getting rid of the negative energy by going for a walk in nature or doing some exercise. Be aware of what you are taking in. What are you choosing to look and surround yourself with? Make a choice to focus on other things that lift you up. Learn to use mindfulness and mediation regularly as part of your mental health routine. Create your own group to meditate with on a regular basis.
I am sending love and light to all who are affected by disasters around the world including Gaia herself.
There is a growing awareness that light is much more than simply something that allows us to see the world around us. Many now know about the effect blue light in the evening has on our circadian rhythm and that sunlight on the skin prompts our bodies to make vitamin D, but few are aware of the many other effects that light, particularly certain wavelengths can have on us, or their potential role in helping to maintain and restore health and well-being. Research is showing good potential for red and near infrared light not only in maintaining overall health and wellbeing, but also in the treatment of a wide range of conditions, including fibromyalgia, dementia, Parkinson’s, traumatic brain injury and much more. Symbyx Biome, THOR laserand Vielight are among the leading researchers and manufacturers. Symbyx Biome has conducted trials showing changes to the microbiome after applying near infrared light to the abdomen. They are investigating its effects on symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
While red and near infrared light has been the most used and researched, the therapeutic potential of other colours, including green light for pain relief and treating migraine are now being explored
Although the law limits what therapists other than medical professionals can claim to treat, a growing number of therapists are now offering a range of treatment options using light therapy alone or combined with other modalities to help relieve pain and restore function
The range of devices used includes –
Red light torches for spot treatment or activation acupuncture points
Pads with embedded lights to deliver light to larger areas such as knees, lower back etc
Panels, ranging in size from handheld to large full body arrays
Low level lasers
Helmets to treat dementia, brain injury and Parkinson’s etc

New Moon in Virgo - 15th September @ 11.40am AEST
As the Sun and the Moon hold hands in the sky, they fall in the earthly sign of Virgo and will also create a Grand trine in earth as they make aspects to Neptune in Capricorn and Aquarius in Taurus. This means there is a strong and beautiful flow of earthly energy in the sky at this time
Virgo is the organiser of the zodiac so as these planets meet you may feel called to get things in order, to create a plan or a list of what the steps are to create your desires.
Virgo is ruled by the Planet Mercury (who rules our intellect and communication) so this may mean that we feel the need to put some sort of clarity and practicality into our emotional realm (The moon) But be gentle with your thought process during this time as the perfectionist side of Virgo is also strong and may begin to ‘critique’ your emotions in order to gain clarity.
And while we don’t want to think too hard about how we feel as our emotions need to be felt, Virgo gives us the support of structure It is time to clean out the cobwebs and get practical
Where can you embrace more organisation in your life?
Where could you use a more practical approach? Get that pen and paper out and start writing the list!
By Heidi Reeves Rising Sol AstrologyVirgo also rules health and wellbeing so this is also a great time to put your health goals into a practical format and get those daily habits ironed out.
How can I serve myself so I can better serve the ones I love?
Full Moon in Aries - September 29th @ 7:57PM AEST
While the Sun is in the the harmonising sign of Libra it is illuminating the emotional Mother Moon in the fire sign of Aries on this Full Moon.
It’s important to remember that there is polarity in everything and the Libra/Aries axis really highlights this Libra wants to merge and join with the other while Aries is here for herself, the independent, pioneering spirit!
So how do we merge these energies?
We pause. Aries likes to act before thinking while Libra struggles to make the decision at all! A pause will give us time to calm the fire in our emotional realm, a pause to breathe, to think and then to feel.
A Pause allows the Aries fire to be less explosive while still showing up in all her passionate glory.
A pause allows the Libra sun to tap into her own intuition rather than just saying yes to please the other
Where in your life do you need light the fire?
Where could you be more independent?
How do these two energies show up for you?
It’s time to embrace all of who you are, It’s time to take the leap!September moon phases 2023
Hello fellow wild food foragers, my name is Kimberly and I am the owner of Silver Sage Cottage I study edible plants in our local area for basic survival and fun It’s surprising the amount of wild food, medicine and useful plant resources that are available to us in nature I will be showcasing one, safe, easy to identify, wild edible plant each month I will provide a photo, a common name, a botanical name, some basic information about the plant and a recipe to try I forage and eat the plants showcased and know them to be safe, however I encourage you to do your own research and ensure that you have the correct plant before eating it
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for what you ingest, you are wholly responsible for your own safety If you are unsure, please feel free to contact me for help with identification at Silver Sage Cottage 0498076683
Hello again Foraging Friends, I hope this month’s well-known weed gives you a nice surprise Hardy and drought tolerant, this plant is used all over the globe as a food source It has a gelatinous texture and is good for thickening soups, stews and pie fillings It is also an excellent substitute for egg whites and every part of the plant is edible raw and cooked.
LEAVES: young leaves eaten raw or cooked as a salad or spinach type vegetable.
SEEDS PODS: picked when fresh and green, the raw “cheeses” taste nutty These young pods can be brined or pickled like capers
ROOTS: jelly from the root is used as an egg white substitute. 1 tablespoon dried mallow root in 1 tablespoon water = 1 egg white.
SUPER FOOD: Vitamins A, B, C, Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium; the young leaves have the highest Vitamin A of any vegetable
MEDICINAL: leaf tea calms restlessness, tummy upsets and urinary tract infections. It’s a wonderful wound poultice and healing salve. The root has been recorded in history as an aphrodisiac.
½ cup water
2 tblspn's mallow root powder
1 tblspn honey or sugar or sweetener to suit Cornflower
Boil mallow root powder in the water and honey until thickens. Whip with whisk, electric mixer or blender until forms whipped egg white's consistency Pour into mould lined with parchment paper and corn flour and put aside to cool and set Slice with a corn flour dipped knife, and coat the cut pieces in cornflour and or icing sugar
Mindfulness is the simple concept of focusing your awareness on the present moment while gently acknowledging and accepting your feelings, thoughts and bodily sensations. It’s a concept that when actioned can have profound positive impacts on your life mentally, physically and emotionally.
So how do we bring mindfulness into our everyday life? Here are some simple strategies to get started.
When we eat mindfully, we are more aware of what we are putting in our body as well as how hungry or full we really are. Before your next meal, check in with yourself and ask “how hungry am I?” turn off any distractions, eat slowly, chew thoroughly, savour each bite and stop eating when you are full. Slow down and hold your awareness with your bodily cues.
Rather than seeing housework as a chore, why not see it as an opportunity to practice mindfulness and view it as a self-care activity
Yes, I know, that’s a hard sell but give it a go anyway
An easy place to start might be cleaning out your wardrobe Go through each item and notice how they make you feel Acknowledge items you perhaps should not have purchased or kept as long as you have and notice how it feels to donate those items. Notice how it feels to create more space.
Emotions happen and you can’t stop them, but by using mindfulness you can allow feelings to flow through you and let them go –the more you do it the quicker and easier it becomes!
Next time a big emotion hits take a moment to pause and breathe deeply. Observe what’s happening in your body and be curious about those sensations without judging them. Finally acknowledge the emotions exist by perhaps saying ‘I see you stress.’
Curious about my 8-week mindfulness based therapy program? Send me an email to thekindnesscouch@gmail.com
Today there is a coach on every corner, someone offering to assist you navigate through any aspect of your life. At the gym, cleaning out your cupboards, weight loss, spiritual awakening and even parasite cleansing One aspect they all have in common is being goalfocused (mostly, an extreme generalisation here).
We are all taught from an early age to set a goal and stay focused. There are many different goal-setting strategies from the KISS analogy (keep it simple stupid) to SMART Goals (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound) Yet, in all the years we have spent goal setting,so many of us struggle to stay on track and reach the endpoint.
Why? Here are my thoughts. Goals to me feel quite masculine. They are very structured, outcome-driven and require lots of determination, drive, and action. You rely heavily on the coach for accountability, structure and the secret ingredient that will get you over the line and to the desired outcome.
Compare this now to an intention. Intentions for me feel more feminine, they are feelingsbased. Intentions are less structured and rely instead on surrendering and trust. There is no set achievement date, but a general time frame that feels more flexible
On Friday night I spoke to around 20 members of the incredible F45 CapCoast Gym. They are all currently participating in a 6-week fitness challenge. I was super excited to share my thoughts and knowledge on human behaviour, self-sabotage and finding a balanced foundation I had each of the participants close their eyes, think about the goal they had set at the start of the challenge and then observe how that felt in their body.
Then for comparison, I explained my thoughts on intentions and had them create an intention rather than a goal. Again, they closed their eyes and observed how that felt in their body When asked to compare if the intention felt better than the goal, roughly 75% agreed
We can see here that everyone is different. However, most felt better with the intention. So, what does this mean for you? If you have worked with me, you will always hear me talk about setting the intention. What I observe with myself and my clients, is the use of an intention is more likely to lead to the desired outcome. It feels safer in the body as there is less worry about failure and more flexibility to explore the emotions and feelings that arise.
I also believe that the journey is more important than the outcome It is during the journey that you will learn the most about yourself just by being present, aware, and willing to explore your feelings, beliefs, and thoughts
Only through identifying the underlying cause of our subconscious blocks can we truly understand what we want from life and why we struggle to achieve certain things
I prefer my clients to focus on today, the moment in front of them, rather than the end date Yes, you need to have structure, time frames and accountability, but the focus needs to be on your
feelings as you are doing that thing
What feelings come up and what are you doing with them?
It’s not about ignoring them, pushing past them and hoping tomorrow you will have more selfworth and drive It is about honouring them They will determine your outcome, not your drive or your level of motivation Do you believe you can or not?
You cannot punish or shame yourself into a better result. Bypassing your feelings and limiting beliefs is like carrying buckets of rocks along the journey It will feel harder. There will be more stopping and starting, and you’ll be constantly wondering why it is so freaking hard!
When you hire a coach, ask them questions about goal setting Ask them how they manage clients with setbacks, emotional distress and limiting beliefs At various stages we will all have them, especially if we are challenging ourselves in a new way How you address them and move through them makes all the difference Using the masculine energy of push and drive, or the softer feminine ways of surrendering and trust Both are required at different times.
It’s all about duality. I feel that an intention with its softer approach creates more room for feedback (not failure) and self-exploration Give it a go, try the softer approach and let me know how you go.
