July marks the 2nd birthday of The Hub Capricorn Coast and its relaunch as a digital magazine. It has been an incredible two years and many local businesses have been featured and supported in the magazine along the way.
Over the past two years the free business directory has grown to over 100 listings, we ’ ve hosted 2 International Women’s Day Events, held 2 Walk for Wellbeing in support of Queensland Mental Health Month, participated in the Central Queensland University I Activate Program, supported the first Women’s Health Month on the Capricorn Coast, paid it forward with over $2000 in contributions from The Hub Giving Fund, launched a website, launched our Spotify and YouTube Channels and collected over 200 books for the Wellbeing Library It has been quite a busy, fulfilling and rewarding couple of years!
However, we feel like we have only just touched the tip of the iceberg as there is so much more to bring to you as we continue to grow and become more well-known among the local community. We will continue our mission to spread kindness in the community while being the ‘hub’ of local health and wellbeing information.
We’d like to take a moment to thank those businesses who have supported us along the way and a special mention to those who have been with us since the get go. Your belief in what we have been creating along the way is what has kept us going.
By Shanelle Schick
Thank you to those who have been brave and humble enough to share their stories with us. I have loved chatting with you all and finding out how you have ended up where you have doing what you love, especially here on the Capricorn Coast. I was born and raised in Yeppoon and have always been fascinated with how people have come to be living here of all the places (just a small obsession!)
We are always open to new ideas, columnists and love writing stories about our local businesses as we know how important publicity is when you ’ re in a small business While providing an outlet for Capricorn Coast businesses to advertise, we are mindful of the rising costs associated with running a business and do our best to be as affordable and accessible as possible.
The past two years have been such a joy to be part of, we can’t wait to see what’s in store for the next two!
We will be at Stir and Stitch on Friday 12th July having a tea and cake and would love to invite you along to join us in celebrating the milestone of our 2nd birthday.

Yeppoon has welcomed a beautiful new healing space with the most magnificent outlook of Yeppoon Main Beach and the Keppel Islands – The Wellness Haven, Yeppoon. Officially opening in May, The Wellness Haven Yeppoon is located at 5/24 Anzac Parade, above Seagulls Takeaway offering a cosy sanctuary in an unassuming location.
Recently, I had the pleasure of catching up with Shen, the beautiful heart and soul behind one of the coast’s newest health and wellness additions. The space has been thoughtfully curated to provide a space for restoration, rejuvenation and healing A truly wonderful haven to restore the nervous system, which is much needed by many of us caught up in the hustle and bustle of life these days You can’t help but feel at peace and relaxed when you enter, not to mention the view which is breathtaking and a reminder of why we are so blessed to have such beauty on our doorstep
Shen is no stranger to the health and wellness industry with a background of 16 years in kinesiology and a family lineage of healers She says that kinesiology allows us to access our own truth and that she is merely a facilitator of that process Quite often we know what we need yet feel stuck and need space to open up to discover what’s within and to truly hear and listen to our inner voice and access our inner wisdom
In 2019, she sold her busy vegan food business on the Sunshine Coast to find a space in the mountains which became The Wellness Haven In March 2020 Shen ran a Mentorship Program ‘Rebirthing the Sacred Heart’ and subsequently called in and birthed her son as a result of the process This was a significant event, as his birth was exactly 12 months after her move to open
We are now blessed to have access to Shen and The Wellness Haven Yeppoon The space has been thoughtfully designed as a community healing space with a variety of offerings. There is a spacious area for small workshops and yoga classes and a treatment room with practitioners rotating. Currently working from the space is:
-Lauren – psychotherapist -Susie – psychic readings
-Sharon – holistic relationship counsellor -Shen – yoga teacher, reiki master, kinesiologist -Stacey – yoga teacher on Wednesdays fortnightly Meditation classes are coming soon. The space is not a yoga studio, rather a space where the community can come together as part of the wholeness of the space. For more details about practitioner availability head to The Wellness Haven Yeppoon Facebook page
Shen has also brought Triibal Dance to the local community which are monthly evening free flow movement ecstatic dance sessions held at the Queen Street Hall These events are an opportunity to reconnect with yourself through dance and somatic movement No experience is necessary Keep an eye on The Hub Capricorn Coast Event Directory for details of the next class
If you are seeking a space to take time out for yourself, to reconnect, rejuvenate and restore body and soul, then I would highly recommend checking out what’s on offer at The Wellness Haven Yeppoon. It is wonderful to have such a communityminded, heart centred space at our fingertips. Be sure to connect with and follow The Wellness Haven Yeppoon on social media.

This year ’ s Walk for Wellbeing preparations are well underway. The event is being held on Sunday 13th October with check in commencing at 6am at Farnborough Beach It is hoped that the slightly earlier start time this year will help walkers to beat the spring heat.
This year a half-walk option Farnborough to Lammermoor has been added to encourage more community members to come along and support the Queensland Mental Health Week Event, whilst taking time to enjoy some of our local iconic sights that can be missed in the hustle and bustle of day to day living
The aim of the event is to encourage participation It’s not about being the fittest or the fastest When the walk was originally planned back in 2022, it was more to encourage locals to get out and enjoy the fresh air. This is one of the main reasons that a water break at Ross Creek has been factored in, along with a snack break at Lammermoor Beach
The walk is being supported this year through sponsorship from local businesses We are pleased to introduce our Gold Sponsor Zest Health and Wellness and Bronze Sponsors Kirra G PT & Creating Calm All are small businesses with a passion for supporting others to live a healthier and happier lifestyle. The Hub Capricorn Coast is incredibly grateful for the support of these businesses in these challenging economic times as it means the rising costs of holding such an event can be somewhat alleviated giving participants a more affordable registration cost.
Registration for the full walk is $30 and participants can choose to receive an event t-shirt or a water bottle & backpack if their registration is received by the 30th August The half-walk is $20 with the same options available
Posters will start to pop up throughout the community over the coming weeks, so be sure to keep an eye out Full details of the event can be found on the Facebook event page and also on our website –www.thehubcapricorncoast.com.au
If you would like to help out on the day, we are putting a call out for volunteers to help in a variety of ways. If you are interested, please get in touch via email thehubcapricorncoast@gmail.com
Keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram accounts for updates about the event as they come to hand.

When was the last time you connected with the genius of your right brain? You might be thinking, ‘what the heck are you even talking about?’ Our right brain is the creative, intuitive and visual side of our brain, the peaceful side. Unfortunately, these days many of us are living dominantly in our left brain where we are logical, analytical and where we store stress, leaving little to no time to connect with our creativity.
Helen Joy is on a mission to help us all to reconnect with creativity and intuition through her Right Brain Genius 5- and 8-Week Courses She has several courses running locally commencing in July The author of Coffee Stains for Balanced Brains – Stimulate Your Right Brain to Work in Balance with the Left, is passionate about sharing the work of Betty Edwards, which was how she initially learned to draw
A series of life events led Helen to make the decision that she wanted to learn to draw at the age of 30. The near-drowning of her toddler daughter, which landed her at her daughter’s hospital bedside laden with mum-guilt for a momentary lapse in attention, had her cross paths with a nurse who helped her to realise the fortunate position she was actually in. Her daughter had survived what many others don’t and that she needed to take that experience and go and live life to her fullest potential.
While living in Cairns, Helen became involved with Laurie Lawrence’s ‘Kids Alive Do the Five’ pool safety campaign She was invited to be part of the committee that brought Laurie’s project to life Providing the artwork for a series of posters to support his work, something that she became quite passionate about after her daughter’s incident
Helen says that often adults think that they can’t draw This is usually due to a bad experience in art class as a child and that once we hit high school, art is generally a subject that gets overlooked in an effort for more academic ones. As a result, when people come to her classes, their drawings are still quite child-like. The Right Brain Genius Course takes participants through a series of activities that allows them to tap into their unused creativity. Most of her students are surprised by their abilities once they follow the process taught during the course.
Local courses will commencing in July include Saturday Mornings at Aphrodite Art School Yeppoon, Wednesday mornings and evenings at Stir and Stitch and Thursday evening at Aphrodite Art School in Rockhampton. To book for any of these classes, head to www rightbraingenius com au or give Helen a call to have a chat and have your questions answered 0408 249 545

In the September 2023 edition of The Hub Capricorn Coast I discussed light's effect on humans, in particular the therapeutic potential of red and near infrared light. There's nothing new about the concept of using light for therapeutic purposes. The ancient Greeks were among the first to discover the therapeutic effects of sunlight, which they called heliotherapy or sun therapy. Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, described how sunlight could be used to treat mood disorders.
Modern research has shown that exposure to sunlight can increase the level of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is involved in controlling your mood, and low serotonin levels in the brain are thought to play a part in depression. People living in areas where there is little sunlight during winter, can suffer from SAD (seasonal affective disorder) Bright SAD lamps are now readily available, and have been shown to be very helpful for at least some people
Sensible exposure to UVB rays initiates a complex process resulting in vitamin D being produced in our bodies In the 1900s, children in the UK and elsewhere in Europe were treated with UVB lamps to increase vitamin D levels and prevent rickets Currently, for babies where jaundice levels are very high in the days after birth, treatment using blue lights may be used in hospitals, and sometimes at home Light can have a big effect on our circadian rhythm. Light exposure was used as part of the treatment for insomnia in a recent TV series, aired on SBS, and presented by the late Dr Michael Mosley.
Red and near infrared light is now being used in clinics, research institutions, and clinical trials for a range of disorders, including
By Brian Drummond Recharge Remedia
Parkinson's disease, dementia, traumatic brain injury, irritable bowel disease, and autism.
While red and near infrared light are the most researched wavelengths in non thermal light therapy, there's growing research into the potential therapeutic effects of other colours. Green is the colour I currently find particularly interesting. In the 1870s, Dr. Seth Pancoast, an American physician, theorized that green light could have a calming, restorative effect and used it to treat conditions like insomnia, neuralgia, and depression During the early 20th century, the use of green light therapy continued to be explored, though it remained a somewhat fringe medical practice Some clinics and spas began offering green light treatments, claiming benefits like reduced stress, improved sleep, and enhanced mood In more recent times there has been a resurgence of research, particularly at the University of Arizona and Harvard University While the effect of green light on other disorders is being investigated, their focus is on migraine and fibromyalgia Research is underway elsewhere into the therapeutic effects of green light in a range of issues including, fat loss, skin improvements, and pain reduction
One of the big advantages of using green light is that it is very safe As the green therapy lamps on the market are quite expensive, I am currently investigating more affordable options in consultation with a local electrician and a US based electronics engineer.

Success, it can be an interesting topic and one that is far too often used to hold ourselves to unrealistic standards
Success shouldn’t be a one size fits all approach
It is as individual as we are, so my version or definition of success will be very different to someone else’s Something else to keep in mind is that it is fluid and ever- changing Our version of success can differ depending on what season or circumstances of life we are in.
We don’t need to hold or compare ourselves to some made up storyline of: finishing school, going to university, get a good job, find a partner, marry, buy a house, have kids, and do all of this by 30. Honestly its exhausting just trying to say all that let alone do it.
We are the creators of our lives. We get to choose how we live it. .
In my twenties my version of success was having a decent paying job so I could travel. That was the priority for myself and my partner, because that was what we loved to do Later on, we did decide to have kids and a whole new version of success started for me, which for quite a long time was just making it through the days. If we were all feed and clean that was a successful day
My current view of success is to find happiness/joy in each day Now that doesn’t mean the whole day, no one is happy 24/7, but if I get to the end of that day and think these where the moments that made me smile then that was a successful day. The other part of my version of success is regards to my business
What brave step or new action did I do this week?
What did I do that pushed me out of my comfort zone?
If I can name at least one action, then that was a successful business week for me.
So, these are my little words of wisdom this month and I hope it can help, inspire or encourage you to take a look at what your own version of success is
I will be continuing to have a stall at some of the local markets; so be sure to keep an eye on my socials to find out when and where
Come down and say hi, I’d love to chat with you
What’s one word that is synonymous with yoga?
Most people would say flexibility
Google’s definition of flexibility is ‘the quality of bending easily without breaking’ ‘The ability to be easily modified’ ‘A willingness to change or compromise’
I actually think this describes yoga really well
We are taught that the measure of a yoga practice isn’t about the ability to touch your toes or bend over backwards. It’s how much you can relinquish, an ability to adapt or change. Yoga teaches that when we become flexible in the body, we become more flexible in the mind, emotionally.
A yoga practice slows us down so we can become more connected to ourselves, our thoughts. Connected to what our body is communicating and a more flexible attitude to all that happens in life.
So, if not being more flexible then, what is yoga?
It is a whole mind body practice that gives us the tools to create a joyful physical and emotional experience. Yoga actually has 8 limbs to practice and the movement you do on the mat is only one limb called asana, the ‘physical’ practice of yoga But when you head to a class (face to face or online) your instructor will guide you through the other limbs to create that whole yoga experience
And that’s where all the good, juicy stuff is!
If you have been thinking you should start yoga, then give it a go. I haven’t met anyone who regrets starting a yoga practice
Oh, and a final IMPORTANT message: make sure you find a teacher and a yoga class that you LOVE.
This is vital to having an enjoyable, consistent practice
Big warm hugs, Tracy

On the 21st June we said goodbye to the social air sign of Gemini as the sun entered the watery world of Cancer
New Moon
The 6th of July brings in our New Moon in this sign at 8:57am AEST
The Moon is at home in the Sign of Cancer as it is its natural ruler, the Sun on the other hand is a little less comfortable in these nurturing waters.
You may feel a little more sensitive during this lunation and a little more inclined to turn inwards, you have permission to do so!
Cancer is known as the ‘Mother’ Archetype so this is a beautiful time to show ourselves a little of that motherly love.
Check in and ask yourself what you need right now?
How can you nurture your spirit and hold space for yourself?
Can you tap in to that innate wisdom of the body and feel the connection that we all have to the generations that came before us?
Like most New moons, this is a time to plant the seeds of intention, to think about what you want to create in this world and the legacy you want to leave behind.
Cardinal signs will have the strongest connection to this Moons energy, Cancer, Aries, Capricorn and Libra Along with those who have strong 4th house placements
Home is where the heart is and family is who you choose say ’ s this Cancer New Moon.
July 21st welcomes the Full moon in the Earthly sign of Capricorn at 8:16pm.
A more grounded feeling than our New moon in Cancer a couple of weeks ago. Capricorn has their feet planted firmly on the ground! While Capricorn’s focus is the achievements we have made since we set our intentions in the last cycle, don’t get too caught up in society’s expectation of what that looks like!
Success means many different things to people so this is a good time to work out what it means to you.
Do you seek the approval of others to help you feel worthy? Are your self expectations a little out of reach? Or maybe you need to put some stronger structure in place to move yourself forward?
Pluto is sitting close by the moon and will have some influence over this energy so pay attention to any fears that creep in around achievement and putting yourself out there
Pluto is inviting you to dive a little deeper inwards and break down some of those traditional beliefs that may no longer be serving you in this world Can you tune in and surrender the fear long enough to see the truth?
Pluto has strong, transformative energy but you must be willing to trust and let go in order to evolve.
Toastmasters facilitates competitive skills applicable for business, life, & beyond
Story supplied
Exceptional communication skills are key for job seekers and those looking to advance their careers, according to LinkedIn's annual report on the most in-demand skills in 2024 The report confirms that strong communication and leadership skills the two pillars of Toastmasters are extremely valued by employers
"Even as artificial intelligence transforms the way companies do business and employers hire, communication and leadership remain an integral part of keeping the human connection that enables them to thrive," says Morag Mathieson, Toastmasters' 2023–24 International President
"Toastmasters offers individuals the ability to develop and enhance these in-demand skills in a cost-effective and supportive environment."
An effective way of building and enhancing these valuable skills is by joining a Toastmasters Club, the global organisation devoted to communication and leadership skills development.
Toastmasters offers a supportive setting where people can practice and improve these and other soft skills. In addition to public speaking, a typical Toastmasters club meeting gives members an opportunity to engage in active listening, provide and receive constructive feedback, and practice time management.
A number of leading Queensland organisations in both the public and private sectors have inhouse Toastmasters clubs, including Brisbane City Council, Energy Queensland, Powerlink, RACQ, Urban Utilities and the University of the Sunshine Coast. These employers have found
the Toastmasters program to be an effective staff development tool that benefits their organisation.
Queensland boasts over 140 active clubs spread out across the far reaches of the state in locations such as Toowoomba, Mackay, Cairns, St George, Tara, Bundaberg, Brisbane, and Hervey Bay along with many more as part of District 69 of Toastmasters International Each club has their own charm and local spark, welcoming locals and newcomers alike
The Yeppoon Toastmasters Club meet in-person at The Hub, 7-9 James Street, at 6:15pm on alternating Mondays from May 13, with the added option to join remotely via Teams The growing club boasts a welcoming cohort of professional and friendly locals, with their 10th year in service coming up in March of 2025 Toastmasters District 69 Club Growth Director, Nicky Jurd, says Queensland offers a range of Toastmasters clubs suitable for all levels of speakers and with convenient meeting times and locations.
“Toastmasters is thriving in Queensland, with our clubs spread across the state, from as far south as Goondiwindi on the New South Wales border to as far north as Cairns, offering morning, lunchtime, evening and hybrid meetings with both online and in-person options,” she says.
“With strong communication and leadership skills in high demand, there’s never been a better time to join Toastmasters and benefit from its cutting-edge educational programs that have benefitted thousands of people worldwide.”
Here’s the next installment in Candice’s Series ‘A Year of Integrating Mindfulness’.
Welcome back everyone I’m super curious to know how you are going integrating mindfulness into your life this year Feel free to flick me a message on my socials and let me know!
Up until now we have been focusing on mindfulness and integrating it via your meditation practice and practicing doing things mindfully during the day This month we are going to start to work a little more with those unhelpful thoughts
To do this we are extending on last month’s watching thoughts meditation (you may like to alternate between this month’s meditation and the body scan meditation if you feel more comfortable doing that.)
So basically, for this one, we sit in meditation and allow an uncomfortable thought to pop into our mind (please as a beginner do not work with anything distressing) and watch the thought, notice the tone and how it makes you feel in your body. And then as you sit with it, watch as it changes over time. When the time feels right you might even ask the thought “what do you need in order to be okay” and simply sit and allow an answer to come through. It can also be helpful to journal after this meditation to process or come up with a plan to overcome that uncomfortable ‘thing.’

Greetings foraging friends, this month we have thistles on the smorgasbord They are popping up everywhere now and they are at their best for eating when they are young and tender both raw and cooked We have several varieties growing here including a native species (Sonchus hydrophilus) that is short and has a red stem and leaf margins. Sow Thistles are the taller cousins of Dandelions, with multiple flowers and are eaten in the same way as Dandelions too. Most all thistles are edible and are the great forefathers of our modern lettuces Chickens love them and they are friends of the garden too
LEAVES: leaves are used the same as lettuce or spinach It can be added to salads, omelettes or scrambled eggs, spanakopita or fetta and spinach pies, as a stir-fry vegetable, in soups and stews, pesto, pasta and anywhere lettuce or spinach is used
FLOWERS: are edible raw and can be added to salads or used to make infused honeys, oils and tinctures
STEMS: raw or cooked they can be used similar to celery The hollow stems can also be used as a bushcraft or natural straw
NUTRITION: Vitamin C, E and K, Calcium, Iron, Protein and Carbohydrates.
MEDICINAL: milky sap used as a gentle remedy to remove warts.
3 cups wilted Sow Thistle Greens
1 cup Green Onions/Shallots
1 large Egg
¼ cup Self Raising Flour
Salt Pepper and Seasonings to suit
Mix all the ingredients together into a batter and shallow fry spoonsful of the mixture in oil over a medium heat Serve with pesto, salad or cream cheese
Food is all around us, and thistles are plentiful this time of year
Enjoy them. Kimberly.

No matter how much we meditate, chant, ground ourselves, paint pretty pictures and so on, without understanding & recognising how we keep ourselves hooked into the games of life that we have been playing for a very long time, as individuals and as a human collective, nothing in the human condition changes. We are only painting over rust, pretending that all is well.
In my “Better Way of Being” course, participants support one another as they gain a shared language and understanding of the human condition, which also helps deepen their self- awareness and relationships with family, friends, and other people in the community.
“A Better Way of Being” is a course developed by my spiritual teacher, Dave, a Māori Tohunga or man of higher degree, who died back in 2010 I’m keen to pass on Dave’s teachings, to start off with by teaching this ‘basics’ course This pragmatic course offers a ‘data-dump’ of topics – collected in a book - that help people to raise awareness of who they are, and to regain control over their automatic responses to Life The course builds on the assumption that we are programmed in a number of ways by our surroundings and experiences, past and present We can decode these programs and also delete, modify or upgrade them
Current participants thoroughly enjoy participating in the course and find that relationships with people in their environment are improving and becoming more focused, as a result of the courseparticipants themselves becoming more self-aware.
The price is low (only $350), as Dave would have wanted it, because he wanted people to be educated on this ‘human conditioning’ stuff that no other modality talks about, yet what people in our rather sick world need to be aware of to be able to separate out from their programs, and to be who they really are.
I will run the online course via Zoom, and also ‘live’ at my place in Norman Gardens
The ‘live’ course will run over 2 days. Tentative dates are 6 & 13 July, and 13 & 14 July. The dates for the online course are yet to be set, but the course will run over 8 Saturdays, for 3 hours each session
We go through the book “A Better Way of Being” (of which you’d get a copy) together, and have a discussion on each essay in the book to help expand your viewpoint or perspective on each topic and as such the human condition
Each essay explores one topic or aspect of the human condition, like a jigsaw in the puzzle, so you get the full picture as you go and find out how each aspect plays out in your own life The aspects we explore are for example, Paradigms, Platform, Case & Caseload, Energy Fields, Implants, Pretended Knowledge, Recognition, Small Pic-Big Pic, Shopfronts, Protest, Takeout, Resistance, Rightness vs Righteousness, Self Beat-up, Looks-likes, Judgements, Safe Space and Holding Space.
Please let me know if you’d like to have a chat over the phone or need more information.
Looking forward to hearing from you, Dr José van den Akker
