“Great design doesn't have to cost the earth”

Rebecca Clark Interiors is rewriting the rules of high-end design. Step inside Berkhamsted's innovative new concept store where fine wine meets interior inspiration.

Born from owner Rebecca's decade in luxury fashion PR - and subsequent success with several high-end lifestyle ventures - Rebecca Clark Interiors is an interior design studio and showroom that feels sophisticated, but always approachable.

“Iʼve had a lifelong obsession with all things interiors,” Rebecca reveals. “My favourite thing about Christmas as a child was moving the furniture around in the living room to make room for the tree.” This early passion led to an unexpected journey - after her successful career in Luxury Fashion PR, Rebecca started with a high-end nail salon in Wheathampstead that evolved into something much bigger. “It soon expanded to become a luxury

"We work hard to find suppliers that are not widely available, offering incredible design at really good value for money,"

day spa and interiors showroom in Old Welwyn. Our clients would enjoy a facial and place orders for the furnishings they saw in the spa, take pilates classes, or browse wallpapers and fabrics.” This organic evolution led Rebecca to start designing clientsʼ homes, eventually selling the beauty side to focus solely on interiors.

A CREATIVE COLLECTIVE

“I’m blessed to work with the most incredible team of women of all ages; we are a group of creative, like minded girls and we often say we don’t work a day in our lives as we absolutely love what we do. I personally think it’s the best job in the world.” shares Rebecca, who leads an allfemale team of talented creatives.

With showrooms in both Berkhamsted and St Albans, the business operates with a uniquely flat structure. “Everyone gets involved in our projects while helping on the shop floor,” Rebecca shares.

The team includes a highly skilled Project Manager “who is extraordinarily talented at pulling fabric and wallpaper schemes together,” plus a dedicated Interior Designer who collaborates on projects, and four showroom assistants across both locations. As Creative Director, Rebecca oversees everything that goes out the door, preferring to design from her Norfolk coastal cottage. “I need to be tucked away without distractions and have inspiration around me,” she notes.

MAKING LUXURY ACCESSIBLE

The philosophy that “great design doesnʼt have to cost the earth” is evident in Rebecca Clark Interiors’ unique approach. Their design services are effectively free, with deposits fully redeemable against purchases. “Interior design studios can

have a caché of being only for the very wealthy, but this absolutely isnʼt the case at all,” Rebecca emphasises. “One hundred percent of the clientʼs budget goes on the products they keep.”

Although they have a signature style, the team prioritises understanding each clientʼs unique vision. “We love to get to know our clients and what they want to achieve with their space in terms of relaxation and practicality,” Rebecca explains. “We deliver designs that are highly personal to them that theyʼll love for years to come.”

THE SHOWROOM EXPERIENCE

Their extensive fabric and wallpaper library allows clients to see the quality of pieces “in the flesh.” The space is designed to be welcoming, perfect for an informal chat or simply finding inspiration. “We are a really approachable team,” Rebecca emphasises, “and our showrooms are the perfect environment to pop into.”

‘Nellieʼs’ is where design meets wine. An exciting new venture, Nellieʼs Fine Wine Bar occupies the ground floor of the Berkhamsted location, offering clients a chance to experience their furniture collections in an intimate setting. “Clients can sit on and experience our furniture in the bar in a really fun way,” Rebecca explains. The space showcases innovative interior solutions, including remarkable polypropylene sisal-look flooring thatʼs both bleachable and outdoor-friendly.

Rebecca travels extensively to international trade fairs and factories to source unique pieces. “We work hard to find suppliers that are not widely available, offering incredible design at really good value for money,” she shares. “Our

lighting and wall covering lines are really special.”

For Rebecca, whose grandmother moved from South Wales to Berkhamsted in 1940, the location holds special significance. “She worked at Ashlyns when it was a Foundlings Hospital during the war, and met my grandfather at a dinner dance at St Peterʼs town hall,” she shares. “Our design studio being located on the cobbled street outside the church hall is really special to me.” Today, Rebecca enjoys walking her dog (Nellie!) along the canal or up to Ashridge, often stopping at the Alford Arms for a fireside lunch.

The business has received an enthusiastic welcome from locals. “So many people are saying itʼs exactly what the town needed - a cosy, indulgent place to relax and enjoy a glass of wine on deep comfy sofas by candlelight, and a one-stop shop for everything for the home, from bespoke kitchens to full design services, curtains and furniture.”

“There are no two days the same in a small interior design business,” Rebecca reflects, “and the sense of achievement each project brings is an absolute joy. Getting to deliver somebodyʼs dream home and leave them with a space that brings them comfort and happiness is a real privilege.”

Gourmet gifts

Independent food retailers and artisanal makers transform Berkhamsted High Street into a cornucopia of delights.

Late-night, candlelit shopping evenings see mulled wine and mince pies appear in shop doorways, as exquisite hampers go on display in festive Christmas windows.

At Mercurio’s, where knowledge of fine wines meets regional Italian gastronomy, Christmas preparations begin months in advance. Speciality cheeses and meats arrive from small Italian producers, each one chosen for its exceptional quality and authentic recipe. The shop transforms into a grotto stacked with treats, where traditional Italian products sit alongside modern luxury items - think Pici pasta from Granoro, raw honey from Piedmont, and Umbrian truffle oil.

Meanwhile, Cook & Butler’s atmospheric boutique becomes a go-to for seasonal specialties. Beyond their reputation for exquisite homewares and unique gifts, it’s a great spot to pick up fine foodie treats for hampers, stockings and the Christmas table.

Yvette’s Chocolates are handcrafted using traditional methods and premium ingredients. From best-selling Milk Salted Caramel Bark to Great Taste Award-winning Coffee Mocha Bark, their regular selection of flavours are always innovative, but come December the bar is raised with the likes of Advent Calendars, Chocolate Selection Boxes and even individual hand-painted Solid Funky Santas!

A market town at Christmas

From artisan crafts to street food feasts, experience the festive magic of Berkhamsted’s markets at Christmas.

The story of commerce in Berkhamsted stretches back to Saxon times, and nowhere is this heritage more vibrant than in the town’s markets. Each week, the historic High Street comes alive with a blend of traditional charm and contemporary craft, this month all under the watch of the town Christmas tree.

The Pop-Up Bazaar’s Christmas markets, held on December 7th and 15th at the iconic Town Hall, showcase up to 48 stalls featuring locally made crafts, jewellery, textiles, toys, and more. It’s a perfect spot to find unique gifts while supporting local artisans.

Every Wednesday and Saturday, the historic charter market fills the High Street with fresh produce, flowers, plants, and local goods. On the third Sunday of each month, the Farmers’ Market takes over,

offering seasonal vegetables, farm-fresh meats, artisan cheeses, and locally brewed beer. Food stalls serve up hot treats like burgers and crepes, creating a lively scene for morning shoppers.

The Berkhamsted Antiques & Vintage Market holds its final event of the year on December 1st. Here, the High Street transforms into a haven for antique and vintage enthusiasts, with up to 50 stalls featuring everything from vintage furniture and mirrors to pre-loved clothing, records, toys, and books. In 2023, the market expanded to the Civic Centre, where visitors can find jewellery, silver, vintage textiles, glassware, prints, and more.

This holiday season, Berkhamsted’s markets offer a delightful blend of tradition, craft, and festive spirit, a true celebration of this historic market town at Christmas.

Helping Rebuild Lives

This Christmas, DENS has teamed up with The Guide to continue its vital mission of Helping Rebuild Lives. This campaign transforms lives through practical support and compassionate action.

Homelessness isn’t always visible. It could be someone sofasurfing, a family in temporary accommodation, or individuals just one paycheck away from losing their home. DENS’ approach goes far beyond providing immediate shelter, offering a comprehensive support system that includes employment training, mental health support, and practical life skills development. For instance, their Day Centre offers warmth, hot meals, and access to essential services, while their Move On and Resettlement services help people progressing from their 44-bed hostel as they transition into independent living.

There are several ways Berkhamsted locals can support DENS’ vital work:

Financial Support

Donations provide the flexibility to address immediate needs as they arise. Donate through The Guide’s URL at the bottom of this page, to help DENS respond quickly to emerging situations and provide targeted support where it’s needed most.

Donate to the Foodbank

The DENS Foodbank provides emergency provisions to families and individuals in need across Dacorum. While they have a good supply of many food, hygiene and

household items, there are some specific items that they are in urgent need of. See the full list and how to donate at Dens.org.uk/high-needs-list.

Digital Giving with Daily Shopping

Transform your everyday purchases into support for local families by selecting DENS as your chosen charity on Easyfundraising.org.uk. This simple click ensures a percentage of every purchase goes directly to supporting local people in crisis - at no extra cost to you.

Spread the Word

You can make a difference by raising awareness. Follow DENS on social platforms, and share their posts to help spread their message of hope and practical support throughout our community. Looking ahead to 2025, DENS continues to focus on both emergency support and prevention services, working to break the cycle of homelessness before it occurs. Their comprehensive approach helps ensure that support reaches those who need it most, when they need it most.

What’s more, they can be relied upon for totally unique discoveries, and their warm, collaborative spirit. You’ll often hear shop owners recommending each other’s businesses, creating a shopping experience that feels more like a community than a high street.

The town’s longest-serving retailer, Bailey & Sons has been helping customers mark life’s precious moments with fine jewellery since 1872. Now on Lower Kings Road, their heritage shines through in dependable, classic collections. Newcomer Marie-Blanche brings fresh sparkle for the season; a walk around the beautifully appointed jewellery boutique being an experience in itself. Expect personalised gift-wrapping, a selection of gorgeous complementary products and an extensive collection of contemporary silver jewellery. Sustainable gifting takes centre stage at Cook & Butler, where thoughtfully curated homeware and artisan goods celebrate craftsmanship and slow living. Their “Cosy & Bright” Christmas campaign perfectly captures the season’s warmth, while Woods of Berkhamsted continues their eco-friendly initiative, offering to plant your pot-grown Christmas tree in established woodland after the festivities end.

Literary lovers will find their haven in The Berkhamsted Bookshop, where local authors’ works sit alongside the famous

‘Blind Date with a Book’ shelf, and a selection of brilliant half-price treasures. Colourful &Quirky lives up to its name with an eclectic mix of unexpected finds for friends and family - the first thing you’ll notice is a collection of disco balls to rival the Strictly set.

Fashion-conscious shoppers have made Amelie their destination for 17 years, with their curated designer collections now including cosy Barefoot Dreams loungewear and sustainable Stripe & Stare pieces.

Thursday late-night shopping throughout December transforms the High Street into a magical evening experience to be looked forward to, with many retailers offering special events. Cook & Butler’s candlelit evenings and The Berkhamsted Bookshop’s twinkling atmosphere create the perfect setting for unhurried Christmas shopping.

Charming little touches and face-toface interactions remind us why shopping in person will always beat scrolling online. Enjoy Woods’ expert Christmas tree advice, Amelie’s thoughtful wishlist service, or &Quirky’s remarkable ability to stock exactly what you didn’t know you needed (like a bell to ring exclusively for champagne).

Marie-Blanche

Berkhamsted's newest jewellery boutique has opened just in time for Christmas, bringing a fresh perspective on contemporary silver jewellery and showstopping special occasion pieces.

Step inside and you’ll immediately recognise Annabelle’s keen eye for detail in the thoughtfully curated interior. An enchanting mural detailing glitter-seeking magpies welcomes visitors into the beautiful space, setting the scene before the shopping journey begins. Annabelle has always had a love for beautiful antiques - the vintage cash register and other eye-catching pieces make this more than your average jewellery shop.

“Retail and manufacturing run deep in my family - my English grandfather was a shoemaker in Northampton where I grew up, and my grandmother on the French side - whose name was Marie-Blanchewas a lacemaker. I take my middle name from her.” Annabelle explains. “Having spent a number of years in retail, it felt natural to create a space that celebrates their heritage while creating a truly special shopping experience.”

“I’m excited to share an extensive range of silver jewellery from all over the world,” she continues. From statement pieces to delicate designs, each carefully selected range caters to diverse tastes and budgets. Bridal was a core part of the MarieBlanche brand, now we have expanded to many other collections. “Get excited for our Christmas edit which promises to sparkle with jewellery perfect for festive celebrations or those seeking something special for themselves or a loved one.”

What truly sets Marie-Blanche apart is its personal service. “I started this business personalising boxes with pressed flowers and a wax seal bearing the initial of my customer’s choice. This was tailored to bridal gifting, but my customers loved the thoughtful touch (and I loved doing it!). This will be a service I continue to offer, though it’ll look a little different in a shop setting,” Annabelle shares. “I’m excited to deliver personal touches like this and Christmas gift wrapping - plus a larger collection of silver jewellery for every occasion.”

The boutique’s first Christmas promises to be special, the shop’s inviting entrance remaining open until late every Thursday up until the 25th of December. Expect a Christmassy feel and a warm welcome from Annabelle - look out for a special shopping event introducing Marie-Blanche to the High Street.

As retail continues to evolve, MarieBlanche offers something increasingly precious – a shopping experience that engages all the senses and celebrates the joy of discovery.

The Berkhamsted Bookshop

Recently celebrating its second birthday, it didn't take long for The Berkhamsted Bookshop to become the High Street’s most loved literary spot.

After 20 years of running bookshops in London, manager Charlotte was drawn back to Hertfordshire, her family’s original home, enchanted by Berkhamsted’s rich wildlife and history.

Most people who walk through the door immediately comment on the inviting smell of books and earthy wood. The beautiful historical building is a little haven on the High Street, filled with plants, beautiful lights, and stretching much farther back than people expect. This thoughtfullydesigned space houses a carefully curated selection of fiction and non-fiction, alongside a charming children’s section.

Building connections sits at the heart of the bookshop’s ethos. “We love making connections with our customers, getting to know their tastes andrecommending books that we know they will love” shares Charlotte. This community spirit extends to collaborations with local authors and artists, whose works feature prominently among the shop’s offerings.

This Christmas, the bookshop transforms with little Christmas trees greeting visitors at the entrance. Their 2024 seasonal highlights include work by local creatives; Mary Casserley’s beautiful local prints and cards, John Seymour’s

Birds of Berkhamsted calendar, and gilded Chiltern classics. The popular ‘Blind Date with a Book’ concept returns as a perfect pre-wrapped stocking filler, while savvy shoppers can explore the shop’s half-price titles for budget-friendly gifts. Not everyone knows that half the store’s stock is heavily discounted.

Visitors can experience the bookshop’s magical atmosphere during late-night shopping on Thursdays throughout December. The bookshop champions Berkhamsted’s unique character, highlighting how the twice-weekly markets and the antiques market draws visitors from far and wide. During quieter moments in the early afternoon, the team fields some remarkably specific requests. “We are always asked for very niche books, think steam trains in the industrial revolution or novels set in Nauru - it is always worth asking though, because more often than not, if you can think of it, someone has written a book about it!”

Since 1872, this family-run jeweller has been adorning the town’s residents with carefully curated collections, moving from Castle Street to Lower Kings Road to accommodate their expanding business.

“We’re a fourth-generation family jeweller,” explains Charlotte, “moving with the times but holding our traditional values and appearance.” This blend of heritage and innovation is evident in their current collections, which showcase both classic pieces and modern designs.

This Christmas, the shop is sparkling with their favourite brands. “Ania Haie is known for its innovative, fashion-forward designs, perfect for cartilage earrings

and necklace layering,” Charlotte shares. “While Kit Heath brings their trademark classic, contemporary British style to life from Devon.”

Festive shoppers can expect beautiful 9ct yellow gold pieces alongside silver goldplated modern designs. “We’ll always go that extra mile to find something particular if we don’t have it in stock,” says Charlotte.

“We have lots of little gifts starting from £15.” Everything comes professionally boxed and gift-wrapped, with their popular Diamond Dazzle Sticks making perfect stocking fillers.

Being Berkhamsted’s longest-serving shop has its memorable moments. “We see a lot here - you’d be surprised,” Charlotte

laughs. “Recently, we helped a customer with pliers to fit a new tragus cartilage earring from Ania Haie!”

The shop’s busiest time is 1-3pm, though Charlotte’s perfect Berkhamsted day involves Wednesday market browsing, “starting with the best caramel latte in town at Epicure, followed by Vinegar Hill and brunch at Plates.”

Christmas tree collection

Ease your festive clean-up with the help of the Berkhamsted Scouts.

What to do with your Christmas tree once the festivities have finished? If you have bought a real tree, you might be dreading squeezing it into the wheelie bin or leaving it outdoors for Dacorum to collect at the end of February. Fortunately, there’s a more convenient, eco-friendly alternative with The Scouts. On January 5th, Dacorum Council’s waste services team will be running a one-day-only

tree recycling event. Local Scout groups, coordinated by the 1st Berkhamsted Scout Group, will be collecting trees from homes, where they will then be chipped into a mulch for the borough’s flower beds. This annual initiative, now in its 16th year, provides a sustainable solution for tree disposal while raising funds for Scout groups in Berkhamsted and surrounding areas. By collecting trees directly from residents, the Scouts reduce car trips, saves time and lowers emissions. The collection is donation-based, with all contributions supporting Scout equipment, activities, and trips. With support from local businesses and over 80 volunteers, The Scouts have transported more than 15,000 trees to date.

THE CREATIVE ORANGE WORKSHOP

Creative H, run by Helen Dowley, specialises in distinctive original artwork, from prints and cards to bespoke commissions including personalised house portraits. This festive season, Helen

has partnered with Colette from Huis Homewares (known for her hand-sewn cushions, home furnishings, and gifts) to launch The Creative Orange Workshop, an exciting new creative initiative. MARY CASSERLEY

All I want for Christmas is …

Local food and wine writer Ben Colvill takes the hard work out of the festive wine haul.

Not cheap: good value. Not just cheerful, but joyful with a touch of luxury. That’s what we want from our Christmas wine. Whether you’re channelling Victorian grandeur or Scandinavian ‘hygge’ (cosiness), these wines will complement all that festive food - perfect for those of us who are never knowingly under-stuffed at this time of year.

It’s a tall order. Your wine needs to cover lots of bases: impromptu house party (hide the good stuff), neighbours over for drinks (hide the cheap stuff), visiting wine buffs (just hide), and Uncle Fred’s favourite tipple. And, most importantly, that restorative glass when you’ve been wrestling with the turkey since 6am and your youngest announces they’re vegetarian.

One option is to fill your Christmas stocking with Champagne, white Burgundy and vintage port. And you’d have a lovely time of it. Until the cold light of the January bank statement, hits. For most of us, balance is the name of the Yuletide game: for price, style and consumption (well, I tried!).

Here are my recommendations for those important Christmas and New Year moments, lovely bottles that offer bang for your buck whether you’re tightening your Bob Cratchit belt or want to splash out just a little.

NIBBLES AND APERITIFS CHANDON GARDEN SPRITZ NV

£16.99, WAITROSE

A high-quality base wine (from Argentina) with a herbal, bitter-orange hum. Floral, accessible and great fun, it’s perfect with nibbles, or as a luxurious breakfast fizz.

BOTIVO NON-ALCOHOLIC APERITIVO

£27.50, COOK & BUTLER

Made in our very own Hertfordshire and served in some of London’s swankiest establishments, like The Reform Club and fab natural wine bar Lady of the Grapes. Bittersweet, bright citrus notes and botanical flavours make a great base for mocktails. Locally available at Cook & Butler.

SEASONAL WHITES EXPRESSIONS RIBOLLA GIALLA 2022, VENEZIA GIULIA

£8, M&S

You’re spoilt for choice with the M&S Expressions range. Their peachy-fresh Fetească Regală is a great Sauvignon Blanc alternative, but my money’s on this excellentvalue Ribolla. Italians look to Friuli-Venezia Giulia when they want fresh, food-friendly whites. Packed with green and yellow orchard fruits, it’s perfect with canapés and lighter fish dishes.

CATENA ZAPATA CATENA ALTA HISTORIC ROWS

CHARDONNAY 2022, MENDOZA

£27.99, MAJESTIC

Made with grapes from vineyards high in the Andean hills, this wine offers big, ripe stone fruit and citrus flavours matched by high-altitude acidity. A hint of well-judged oak rounds it all off fantastically - perfect with the turkey. A treat from a serious winemaker.

FESTIVE REDS

YARRI-KARRI CABERNET

SAUVIGNON 2022, MARGARET RIVER

£13, M&S

Claret and Christmas may be synonymous but finding reasonably priced bottles can be tricky. Australia’s Margaret River region offers a brilliant alternative take on traditional Bordeaux grapes. This 100% Cab is made by the excellent Xanadu Winery, rich red bursting with blackcurrant flavours and a hint of mint. Great with roast goose or lamb.

SUPER NANNY PINOT NOIR

2020, CENTRAL OTAGO

£30, PLATFORM WINES

Super name, super label, super wine. Platform Wines have found a real beauty from New Zealand’s wild South Island. More interesting than your typical red Burgundy, it’s absolute heaven with rib of beef or a mushroom wellington centrepiece.

CHEESE (AND FIRESIDE SLUMBERS)

PEDRO’S ALMACENISTA

AMONTILLADO MEDIUM

DRY SHERRY

£11.99 WAITROSE

The Pedro’s range for Waitrose is fantastic. Labelled with vintage Jerez poster art, the wines are made by some excellent houses. Dry sherry fans will want to check out the delicate Palo Cortado, but it’s a chilled glass of the sweeter Medium stuff that will really compliment your bowl of smoked Marcona almonds by the fire.

KOPKE

10-YEAR-OLD TAWNY PORT

£28 GRAPE EXPECTATIONS

A true gem from the oldest of the Port houses. This golden Tawny is aged in oak to produce a nutty, spicy wine with dried-fruit adding a touch of elegance. Goes well with a good cheese board, the Christmas pud and even chocolate.

PARTY SPARKLERS AND NEW YEAR BUBBLES

GRAHAM BECK BRUT ROSÉ

NV, WESTERN CAPE

£17, MAJESTIC

South Africa’s top sparklers are usually a good bet and nothing says New Year’s Eve hootenanny like rosé fizz. A perfect party fizz that combines Pinot Noir’s richness with Chardonnay’s zip. You’ll catch hints of fresh bakery aromas, but it stays gorgeously fresh and festive. Serve with truffle crisps to get the New Year party started.

CRÉMANT DE BOURGOGNE

PINOT NOIR BRUT NV

BAILLY LAPIERRE

£17.99 GRAPE EXPECTATIONS

Sparkling Crémant is now big business in Burgundy. Most is Chardonnay-based but this a little different, a Pinot Noir fizz from an established house that is round and toasty. Excellent value for bottle-aged bubbles. For something closer to home, Grape Expectations also have Marlow’s finest Harrow & Hope, whose Blanc de Noirs is £42 and balances red-fruit spice with fresh English acidity.

My tip? Old-vine Spanish red La Garnacha Salvaje del Moncayo 2021 is £11.49 at Majestic. Run and fill your trolleys with this excellent alternative to the southern Rhône. Truly superb. Looking for a pressie? Platform Wines have Krohn’s Colheita 1999, a rather fab single-vintage tawny port in a wooden gift box. Good value at £34.

A magical Christmas at Waddesdon Manor

Step into a fairy tale this winter as Waddesdon Manor unveils its enchanting Christmas experience, where art history and fantasy intertwine.

At the heart of this year’s celebrations lies a collection of paintings by Russian designer Léon Bakst, originally displayed in the Manorʼs Tower Room, which brings the beloved tale of Sleeping Beauty to life throughout the house.

In an extraordinary artistic dialogue, theatre designer Tom Piper MBE has created a captivating installation in the White Drawing Room, responding directly to Bakstʼs artworks. As darkness falls, the Manorʼs façade becomes a canvas for mesmerising light projections, while the grounds sparkle with new installations, including a spectacular display of over 200 illuminated orbs across Daffodil Valley.

The Coach House Gallery in The Stables hosts a heartwarming community exhibition, “Once upon a Christmas Time,” featuring artwork by 15,000 local schoolchildren. Working alongside artists,

theyʼve created pieces inspired by classic fairy tales, including Little Red Riding Hood, Humpty Dumpty, and Three Billy Goats Gruff.

Until 22nd December, the Christmas Fair transforms the grounds with charming wooden chalets housing carefully selected artisan stalls. Visitors can wander among the sights, scents, and sounds of the season, with food stalls offering a tempting selection of delicious festive foods, drinks, and flavours.

Special late-night openings on Fridays (6th, 13th and 20th December) extend the enchantment, with the grounds open until 9pm (last entry 8pm) and the House until 8pm (last entry 7:20pm). Why not make your experience even more memorable with a festive afternoon tea in the Manor Restaurant? December might seem dormant, but savvy gardeners know it's a month filled with rewarding projects. Local florist Julie Woodford shares seasonal gardening tips.

Winter wonderland

CELEBRATING WINTER

December brings a quieter rhythm to the garden, with much of natureʼs activity hidden underground. Yet this season reveals its own treasures - Winter Honeysuckle, Sarcococca, and Daphne offer delicate, tiny flowers and sweet fragrance, turning a garden stroll into a fragrant delight. This is the time when ‘ever-greys’ like Lavender, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary shine alongside enduring Evergreens such as Conifer, Spruce, and Yew, providing structure and elegance for both gardens and seasonal decorations.

A NATURE-INSPIRED CHRISTMAS

Bringing home and decorating a real Christmas tree remains a cherished family tradition. Whether choosing a fragrant Norway Spruce with lush branches, a silver-green Fraser Fir with dense needles, or the classic Nordmann Fir with its soft, dark green needles ideal for little helpers, each brings natureʼs beauty indoors. Keep your tree fresh by using a waterholding stand, topping up regularly, and positioning away from heat sources.

Wreaths, those timeless symbols of hope and eternal life, began as humble woven branches and now adorn doors throughout town. Elevate yours by transforming it

into a stunning table centrepiece - simply place on a decorative board with a glass lantern and pillar candle. Add fir cones or small sprigs of foliage tied with ribbon and handwritten tags for bespoke place settings.

FLOWERS OF THE MONTH

Outdoors, Winter Pansies bring cheerful colour to pots and garden beds, while indoors forced paperwhite Narcissi bulbs add a delicate fragrance to Christmas decor.

DECEMBER GARDENING TASKS

1. Sow a second batch of sweet peas on Boxing Day, a tradition in our home

2. Protect tender plants with frost cloth during severe cold spells

3. Order Dahlia tubers early to secure your favourite varieties

4. Prune woody perennials to promote fresh growth

5. Browse seed catalogues and plan next yearʼs garden

’Tis the season to be healthy

Feel-good party food nutritionist and hormone specialist Hannah Alderson suggests nourishing additions to your festive grazing board.

Whether it's a Christmas or new year celebration, you donʼt have to miss out on nutritious food while entertaining. Here are some healthy choices to reach for:

QUAIL EGGS

These delicate eggs may be small, but they’re mighty; high in protein, vitamins and minerals. They’re a perfect petite snack that is great styled with celery salt. Due to their dinky size they look fab and are a great option for garden guests. My favourite party trick: you can buy them boiled, often found close by the smoked salmon in supermarkets.

OLIVES

of fat is so important to include in your diet for hormone health - all classes of steroid hormones, glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids and sex hormones are derivatives of cholesterol. Olives are high in antioxidants and vitamin K too, so they make a great addition to any ‘picky bits’ spread. There are a huge variety of options available - opting for ones with garlic, chilli and herbs can also boost the benefits.

HOUMOUS

The chickpea dip that is great for your gut and your blood sugar balance. A great option to serve with freshly sliced cruditesthink carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumber and fresh radish.

ALMONDS

Almonds are a rich source of vitamin E, protein and monounsaturated fat. By avoiding typical shop-bought roasted nuts you can avoid any potential ultra-processed flavourings and additives. Be mindful of portions when it comes to nuts as they are high in energy density, so I would suggest using small bowls and delicate portions.

SMOKED TROUT

Protein-rich, omega 3-boosting smoked trout is a wonderful alternative to smoked salmon that I love, as will your guests. Serve on a circle of dark rye bread, with some cream cheese and lemon rind. If youʼre feeling posh, impress your guests with a little caviar.

FIGS

Great with cured meats, cheese and in their own right; these are sweet treats but packed with beautiful fibre. They look really chic when sliced on a grazing board, too...

Olives contain oleic acid, a type of monounsaturated fatty acid that is the main component of olive oil. This type

Sports Massage • Spin classes • Mat Pilates Strength classes • 1-2-1 Personal Training • 1-2-1 Pilates

All classes are a max of 6 people so you can still have that 1-2-1 experience, they are of mixed abilities and open to all.

My perfect Christmas

A peek into the Christmas traditions of a Berkhamsted local, from pantos to pumpkin spiced lattes. Freelance interiors writer and stylist Lou O’Bryan shares her favourite craft fair, pub walks and festive dinner spots…

I LIVE…

With my husband, Steph, daughter, Elsie, 11, and Rey the show cocker spaniel. Like many people in the area, we moved from London to Berkhamsted about ten years ago after searching for a rural town with good train links, good schools and lovely properties. It was the best move we made, despite me thinking I would never leave the city. I’m so glad we did.

WHY I LOVE BERKHAMSTED…

I love the sense of community and knowing I’m going to bump into someone I know every time I go out. I never got that in London. I’ve created my own Berko bubble of great friends and never want to leave!

IN DECEMBER, I…

Forage for wintery forest foliage, like golden bracken, and make pretty displays along our brick fireplace. I also love a local

wreath making class and like to add some dried flowers amongst branches of fragrant fir for a modern twist.

WHEN I’VE SET MY ‘OUT OF OFFICE’...

I enjoy evenings in London with friends, or at home with the family. We take long dog walks through the forest, ending at a pubnamely the Alford Arms or the Half Moon, where there’s always a fire roaring.

A GREAT FESTIVE DAY OUT…

Would start with enjoying the illuminations at Ashridge House, then going on to a festive dinner at the Highwayman or Lussmans. If it was snowing, we’d be on Butts Meadow sledging the hill.

MY BERKO CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS…

The panto at The Centenary Theatre is brilliant, and Ashlyns Christmas Craft Fair is always on our calendar. We also try to catch the children’s Christmas movie at The Rex, which they play on the last day of term. It’s such a joyful afternoon, particularly with a glass of red in hand.

I BUY GIFTS AT…

Home & Colonial and Cook & Butler for thoughtful one-off finds and pressies. The Oxfam second hand book shop is a treasure trove for book lovers.

CHRISTMAS MORNING STARTS WITH…

A few pressies, then bubbles and blinis with salmon and horseradish sour cream, while we start preparing dinner.

CHRISTMAS IN BERKHAMSTED IS… Buzzy. It’s a country town that has the essence of a cool, London neighbourhood.
