Wellbeing without pretension

A home away from home for health and fitness,  salt. wellness blends Pilates and yoga with a warm, welcoming community focused on wellbeing

Salt. wellness has quickly established itself as Berkhamsted's sanctuary for those seeking physical and mental wellbeing without the intimidation factor. Founded by Kris Pace, this thoughtfully designed studio offers a “360° wellness” approach that combines Reformer Pilates, yoga, barre, TRX, and contrast therapy under one calming roof.

“The idea behind salt. was to create a space that offers the best of health and

wellbeing, without all the pretension,” explains Kris, who grew up in nearby Tring but has strong family connections to Berkhamsted. “After over a decade in the industry, I realised that what I really wanted was a place where people really wanted to be – before, during and after their workout.”

––––

COMMUNITY AT HEART

That vision evolved into a studio where nurture takes centre stage. “Were

incredibly lucky. At salt., were proud to offer a premium space where nurture is at the heart of everything we do,” says Kris. “Rain or shine, our studio is designed to be a place of ultimate comfort and support, where you can work on your body and mind, and maybe even forget about the stresses of daily life for an hour.”

After running over 20 studios in London for other groups, returning to his roots for salt.s first location felt natural. “Its about more than just business. Its about offering something we believe in, back in the place we all grew up.”

The carefully curated mix of class formats stems from a philosophy of effectiveness without intimidation. “Our goal was to bring together the best, most effective concepts in the industry, ones that really do work. We combine them in a way that delivers results, in a bespoke setting where people feel at home,” Kris explains.

PURPOSEFUL PROGRESSION

Learning the fundamentals is central to salt.'s approach, which is why they require you to take a foundation class before advancing to other Reformer Pilates formats . “Learning the fundamentals is crucial. It provides the grounding and technical skills needed to move safely and effectively, with long-term results in mind,” says Kris. “We take people's health and wellbeing seriously, which is why we dont believe in rushing anyone into a Flow or Strong session right away.”

Every detail of the studios physical environment has been thoughtfully considered. “The studio design was incredibly important to us. Its not just about the classes, but the entire experience. We wanted to create a space that feels both calming and energising, where people can truly disconnect from the hustle.”

FROM LOCAL TO GLOBAL

While still in its early days, salt. has already begun forming community connections, recently teaming up with The Mum Club for a successful event welcoming mothers and their little ones, connecting nicely with the Postnatal Classes offered weekly.

Technology will soon enhance the salt. experience, with a new app launching next month to streamline booking and account management. A more interactive version planned for later in the year will offer on-demand classes, wellness resources, personalised playlists, and expert tips.

As for the future, Kris has ambitious plans.“Our goal is not just to scale our concepts and current offerings, but also to

“Everyone is rooting for each other... There's a real sense of wanting to build each other up, not pulling each other down.”

expand. While Berkhamsted will always be our flagship, our ̒first-born’, we’re actively exploring several new locations. It’s an exciting time for us, and we’re incredibly fortunate to have so many passionate people eager to back us and bring this vision to life.”

Kris cherishes being part of Berkhamsteds supportive, independent

business scene. On a typical weekend, he might visit his local, The George, catch a movie at The Rex, or make plans for salt. in their very own Health Bar over an Iced Matcha or smoothie.

“It feels like everyone is rooting for each other in Berkhamsted. Theres a real sense of wanting to build each other up, not pulling each other down. If you're honest in your product and your delivery, people will embrace it.”

A new chapter for The Guide

As we reach our 10th edition, we reflect on both our past and our future

We created The Guide to celebrate the brilliant businesses, people, and events that make Berkhamsted such a special place. It’s been a joy to share stories from our high street, highlight exciting openings and local talent, and bring a bit of thoughtful design and warmth to your coffee tables. But with some big changes ahead, we’re now looking for someone new to take the reins.

From the beginning, The Guide has been a real labour of love. We launched it because we care deeply about this town. We wanted to shine a light on the people, places, and ideas that make Berkhamsted so vibrant, and to give local businesses a platform that felt personal, genuine, and beautifully put together.

Since then, it’s grown into something we’re incredibly proud of. But-as alwayslife moves on.

Annabelle is expecting a baby in September (yay!), and runs the beautiful silver jewellery boutique Marie-Blanche. Adam owns Cook & Butler and organises the Berkhamsted Antiques & Vintage

Market. Between us, things are getting pretty full on - and weve realised we just can’t give The Guide the time, attention, and energy it needs (and truly deserves).

So, we’re looking for someone new to take it forward.

Whether that’s as a new editor, a creative collaborator, or someone who wants to shape the next phase of The Guide, we’re open to ideas. You might work in publishing or marketing, be a writer, or simply love Berkhamsted and want to get more involved in the community.

This could be a freelance role – or even a chance to take full ownership of the magazine.

If that sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you. Drop us a message on Instagram @theguideberkhamsted, or email us directly at info@theguideberkhamsted.co.uk

In the meantime, we’re really looking forward to sharing our bumper 60-page summer issue with you next month!

Thanks for reading – and for being part of The Guide so far. ––––

THE GUIDE FATHER'S DAY

Treat Dad to a delicious Father's Day

Father's Day (Sunday 15th June) is fast approaching. From canal-side pub lunches to sophisticated steakhouses, read our pick of where to celebrate the father figure in your life

CANAL-SIDE CASUAL

THE CRYSTAL PALACE

This 18th-century pub along Grand Junction Canal offers a rustic setting and a special seasonal menu for Father’s Day – mushroom bourguignon pie, Scottish loch trout, and shredded aromatic duck salad. The terrace is a sun trap (fingers crossed) where you can enjoy local ales, world lagers and fruity cocktails from the outdoor bar while simply watching the boats pass by. Five courses for £40, glass of champagne on arrival (non-alcoholic alternative available).

THE BOAT

TRADITIONAL SUNDAY ROASTS

THE HIGHWAYMAN

Go for the free pint awarded to every Dad who walks through the door (and stay for the Boston rib-eye steak available via pre-order). A good choice whatever the weather’s up to, The Highwayman’s bright dining area overlooks a hidden heated courtyard garden and cosy bar, complete with a log fireplace. Sunday roasts (served 12pm - 5pm) come with bottomless Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and gravy. Highwaymanberkhamsted.com

TABURE

Wonderful views of the Grand Union Canal aren’t the only reason to rock up at The Boat on Father’s Day. Beer-battered haddock, lamb & mint sausages and proper cheeseburgers sit alongside Sunday roasts of braised lamb shoulder, roasted vegetable & feta pithivier, and corn-fed chicken supreme. Just popping in? The bar snacks are particularly delicious – go for prawn & n’duja Scotch egg with aioli or calamari with roasted garlic aioli. Boatberkhamsted.co.uk

Founded by husband and wife team Mark and Hulya, Tabure’s colourful menu reflects Hulya’s upbringing in Turkey, celebrating Mediterranean cuisine and culture. Traditional Sunday fare gets a twist; grass-fed Aberdeen Angus roast beef or organic Rhug Estate roast chicken is served with crispy potato terrine, seasonal buttered greens, root vegetable mash, broccoli & cauliflower cheese gratin; not forgetting a Yorkshire pudding & homemade gravy. Served from noon on a first come first served basis – when they’re gone, they’re gone! Tabure.co.uk

THE BULL

Dating back to 1535, barrelled beers and ales are still big business at The Bull –these days paired with seasonal, sustainable food. Sunday roasts are served from 12 - 5.30pm: go for the rump of beef, chicken supreme, faux roast beef, braised leg of lamb or a superb selection of roast stuffed buns (our favourite). Ask staff about the mischievous ‘Ant & Dec’ duo reportedly haunting the cellar – lately, they’ve been turning off the gas, mid-service.

includes signature parmesan scones, a choice of starter, and a selection of mains featuring their famous dry-aged steaks, fish, vegetarian dishes, signature burger and beloved Sunday roast. Tucked away in the iconic old Town Hall, flagstone flooring, exposed brickwork and beautiful original features make for a fittingly elegant setting.

THE FIVE BELLS BY LUSSMANNS

Thebullberkhamsted.co.uk

THE ALFORD ARMS

More free pints for Dads, hoorah! Venture to nearby Frithsden to discover this award-winning gem in a secluded wooded valley with the great Ashridge Forest on its doorstep. A fortnightly changing menu moves with the seasons; head chef Jamie combines a light touch with knockout ingredients, creating dishes that blend classics with hints of far-flung places. We like the sound of chilli roast courgette, quinoa, pea and basil salad with Sarratt leaves and toasted almonds… Alfordarms.co.uk

Treat Dad to relaxed, ethical dining at one of our favourite sustainable restaurants (and the cover star of our first-ever issue!). The terrace at The Five Bells looks particularly beautiful in the June sunshine, but if the weather doesn’t hold, you can enjoy the pretty listed building, and imagine yourself back in the Victorian heyday of what was the town’s oldest pub. Enjoy the carefully curated menu celebrating the finest ingredients grown, reared, caught or produced here in the UK, alongside Mad Squirrel beer on tap.

THE GATSBY

SOPHISTICATED CELEBRATIONS

PRIME STEAK & GRILL

Of ‘unlimited roasties and red wine gravy’ fame, Prime will offer a delicious menu created specifically for Father’s Day, by Executive Head Chef Jamie Robertson. The three-course feast (£42 per person)

Art Deco elegance, authentically Mediterranean food, excellent music – The Gatsby is a fantastic restaurant & piano bar, steps from The Rex. For Father’s Day there’ll be a special set-course lunch of two or three courses, including signature roasts and indulgent desserts. Always a laid-back, refined atmosphere, the lights are low and the cocktails are expertly mixed – just how we like it.

Wherever you choose to dine this Father's Day, booking ahead is strongly recommended to avoid disappointment.

Berkhamsted embraces the e-bike revolution

As commonplace in continental Europe as they are scarce on our Chiltern hills, electric bicycles could transform mobility in our valley town, especially for residents navigating the challenging inclines surrounding the High Street

Lovelo Cycle Works , Berkhamsteds established bicycle specialists since 2013, has curated a thoughtful selection of premium e-bike brands including Brompton, Marin and Ridgeback. Now, theyre particularly pleased to welcome award-winning Estarli e-bikes to their collection – with a local connection that might surprise many readers.

“It appears to be quite a well-kept secret that these great bikes are designed and manufactured right here in Berkhamsted at their Northbridge Road facility,” explains Tim Warrell, Lovelos Director. “They offer a range built to exacting standards for compelling value, perfectly suited to the needs of Berkhamsted and wider Dacorum residents.”

The Estarli collection spans elegantly designed hybrids for both urban commutes and countryside adventures, practical folding models for train journeys, and even a sophisticated E-Cargo variant ideal for local shopping trips or school runs with up to two little ones.

Curious riders can arrange demonstrations at Lovelo on Saturdays or weekdays by appointment – the first pedal stroke toward joining what Warrell describes as “the e-bike revolution” currently transforming mobility in towns across Britain and Europe.

Lovelo is open 9am - 5.30pm Tuesday to Saturday Unit 7, Dwight's Yard, 167 High Street HP4 3HB Lovelocycleworks.co.uk

Berkhamsted Castle: our best kept secret

Find history, woodland walks, spellbinding theatre and adventures at one of England’s oldest motte-and-bailey castles

Standing proudly alongside the railway station, Berkhamsted Castle has witnessed nearly a millennium of British history. These days, it’s the perfect setting for a peaceful solo wander or a thrilling family day out. Impressive ruins, deep moats and wide open spaces offer tons of space for exploring.

Over the centuries, the Norman fortress has hosted an extraordinary cast of historical figures. Edward the Black Prince and his bride spent their honeymoon here in 1361, entertaining the entire court for five days. Later it became home to Cecily Neville, Duchess of York and mother to two kings. Henry VIII even gifted the castle to his family! Information boards throughout the site help bring these fascinating tales to life.

The castle truly comes alive during warmer months, with the dramatic ruins providing an atmospheric backdrop for theatre performances. This June and July bring Shakespeare with a gothic twist and the whirligig of Vanity Fair, while the DENS Woodland Trail offers a chance to get to know the beautiful surroundings while getting fit and supporting a great cause.

SUMMER EVENTS AT THE CASTLE

Where to celebrate The Great Big Green Week in Berkhamsted

Local action, global impact

From 7-15th June, The Great Big Green Week will see Berkhamsted residents join a million people across the country in a wave of actions for climate and nature. This year, Berko and Tring have joined forces to create a programme of events and activities.

The theme for 2025, “Lets swap together for good,” emphasises collaborative action for lasting change. Whats significant about this nationwide initiative is how it brings diverse groups together – communities, schools, businesses, religious organisations and more – to demonstrate collective support for environmental protection.

WHAT IS THE GREAT BIG GREEN WEEK?

This is the UKs biggest movement tackling climate change and protecting nature. Since its inception in September 2021 (with over 5,000 events!) it’s continued to grow impressively. By 2024, 600,000 people were actively participating.

“We can all make small swaps, large swaps and swaps that change the system, to make our communities better,” explain the Great Big Green Week organisers.

This could mean swapping throwaway habits for reuse and repair, exchanging skills, or transforming neglected spaces into wildlife havens.

The beauty of this approach is its accessibility – everyone can make meaningful swaps, regardless of their circumstances.

THE ECO FAIR

On Saturday 7th June at the Civic Centre (161 High St), from 10am to 2.30pm, The Eco Fair showcases the wealth of environmental action happening right here in Berko.

The fair brings together an impressive array of organisations that all share a

passion for positive change. Berkhamsted Town Council, Berko Climate Action, The Wildlife Trusts, Berkhamsted Rotary Club, and Eco Berko will host stalls and activities. Other participants include Open Door, Parents for Future, Eco Hub, Traveltime World, Repair Café, Friends of the Bulbourne, Pens for Kids, and Berkhamsted Eco Churches.

For families interested in sustainability, the National Trust Ashridge Estate team will share insights on conservation, while Chilterns National Landscape representatives will offer guidance on enjoying and protecting our beautiful surroundings. If sustainable fashion interests you, Eco Fashion will be on hand

with alternatives to fast fashion.

The event offers complimentary refreshments, making it the perfect opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and organisations while learning practical ways to live more sustainably. Don’t forget to bring along a plant-based creation for the Great Big Green Vegan Bake competition – you could win a low-carbon cake baking hamper!

A WHOLE WEEK OF ACTION

Beyond the Eco Fair, The Great Big Green Week encompasses numerous events throughout Berkhamsted and Tring. A collaboration between Eco Berko and Sustainable Tring ensures there are plenty

of opportunities to learn, participate, and make contributions to environmental protection.

Woods of Berkhamsted Garden Centre hosts The Great Big Green Week at Woods from 7-14th June. Throughout the week, you'll discover ways to garden more sustainably and grow your own produce.

Previous Great Big Green Weeks have featured tours of renewable energy installations, nature restoration afternoons, mini festivals, repair cafés, and skill-sharing events. Activities are hosted by people from all walks of life – teachers, sports clubs, artists, community groups, places of worship, libraries, and businesses – demonstrating that climate action truly is for everyone.

WHY GET INVOLVED?

In a world of overwhelming global challenges, community action offers something precious: hope through tangible impact.

For busy parents juggling work and family responsibilities, the week offers practical, accessible ways to contribute to environmental protection while creating formative experiences for children. For professionals looking to give back to the community, it provides opportunities to share skills and connect with like-minded individuals. For retirees with time to give, it showcases numerous volunteer positions with environmental groups.

As The Great Big Green Week campaign notes: “By coming together, we'll send a message loud and clear to our politicians and decision-makers that we need to swap old ways for better ways, now.”

GETTING STARTED

“Its easy to get involved,” the organisers emphasise. “You can host events and activities in your area from 7th to 15th June, and make this the greatest, biggest, greenest week of the year.”

Participation can take many forms. Attend the Eco Fair to discover volunteer positions with environmental groups. Join workshops to learn practical skills for reducing your ecological footprint. Take part in community litter picks, tree planting sessions, or habitat restoration projects. Even small actions contribute to the collective impact – installing a bird feeder, reducing plastic use, trying plant-based meals, or simply spreading the word about environmental initiatives all make a difference.

Visit Berkhamsted-tc.gov.uk/council_events or Greatbiggreenweek.com for the full programme of events and resources. Follow Eco Berko @eco_berko and Sustainable Tring @sustainabletring on social media for the latest updates and ways to get involved.

Safe, effective tattoo removal

Regents Park Aesthetics delivers innovative laser technology

Trends evolve and tastes change, leaving many with permanent reminders of oncepopular styles. At Regents Park Aesthetics in Berkhamsted, the revolutionary Harmony XL Pro laser system offers a solution for those looking to erase tattoos or permanent makeup that no longer aligns with their aesthetic preferences.

“Tattooed eyebrows and microblading that were highly sought after a decade ago often don't match todays preference for a more natural look,” explains Kay Greveson, Advanced Nurse Practitioner and founder of Regents Park Aesthetics, who was named Aesthetic Nurse of the Year at the 2024 Safety in Beauty Awards.

The clinics Harmony XL Pro laser system effectively breaks down tattoo pigment of any colour with minimal risk of scarring or hyperpigmentation. Treatment begins with a thorough consultation, followed by the application of numbing cream or local anaesthetic to ensure comfort. The sensation during treatment is often described as similar to an elastic band snapping against the skin.

Most clients require between three to eight sessions spaced six to eight weeks apart, with each brief treatment becoming less uncomfortable as the pigment breaks down. The systems built-in cooling technology makes it considerably more comfortable than older tattoo removal methods. Speed and precision allow it

to effectively treat both large tattoos and delicate areas without affecting the surrounding skin.

“If you can handle getting a tattoo, you can certainly manage removal,” Kay notes.

Regents Park Aesthetics maintains exacting standards across all treatments as the areas only CQC-regulated medical aesthetic clinic – a status shared with doctors, dentists and hospitals. The practices all-female team of qualified nurses and doctors, hand-picked by Kay for their exceptional patient care, has earned the clinic 24 five-star reviews from Berkhamsted patients.

Recently named regional winners in the Muddy Stilettos Awards for Best Clinic in Berkshire and Hertfordshire, Regents Park Aesthetics has locations in central London and Antigua, offering a comprehensive range of treatments designed to help clients look and feel their best in a luxurious, welcoming environment.

June blooms

Summer’s return means sunlit days and breathtaking blossoms. Local flower grower Julie Woodford shares seasonal gardening tips

With dawn breaking early and sunsets lingering late, it’s the season to enjoy time outdoors –whether that’s pottering in the garden, freshening balcony planters or tending to the allotment.

June is abundant with English flowers. Biennials like foxgloves and sweet williams are at their best, perennials such as astrantia, campanula, and peonies are flowering beautifully, and summer bulbs like alliums and lilies are popping up in borders. As ‘cut and come again’ flowers, the annuals like sweet peas, orlaya, cerinthe and cornflowers sown last autumn now produce flowers daily.

Expect a wave of ‘pellymania’ this summer, as scented pelargoniums enjoy a renaissance. Overwintered undercover, they can now be brought outside where their delicate pink, coral, and red flowers and patterned, shapely leaves have their moment. Just rub a leaf between your fingers to release their exquisite fragrance (one that smells exactly like Cola bottle sweets!).

FLOWER OF THE MONTH: THE ENGLISH GARDEN ROSE

June is the peak season for English garden roses. After months of careful pruning and mulching, the first flush arrives with elegant, layered flowers and a heavenly scent, especially from hybrid tea varieties. Available in every shade imaginable, a single stem in a bud vase is enough to bring the garden indoors.

JUNE GARDENING TASKS:

1. Deadhead spent flowers and pick sweet peas regularly to encourage more flowers; feed weekly with a liquid potash feed

2. Direct sow seeds into prepared soil for late-season colour

3. Water wisely; collect and use rainwater wherever possible

4. Choose biennial seeds now to sow in late June for next year’s early summer flowers

5. Lift and divide narcissi while ‘in the green’ to increase your stock

BRITISH FLOWERS WEEK:

JUNE 16-22

Over 80% of flowers sold in the UK are imported from across the globe? British Flowers Week is a wonderful time to celebrate locally grown flowers beauty, scent, and sustainability.

THE GUIDE

HEALTH & WELL BEING

Increase fibre this June for better hormone health

Nutritionist and hormone specialist

Hannah Alderson explains why fibre is your unsung hero for hormonal balance this summer

WHY FIBRE HELPS YOUR HORMONES

1. Encourages regular bowel movements to clear excess oestrogen

2. Feeds gut bacteria that influence everything from mood to metabolism

3. Keeps blood sugar balanced, which is key for reducing cortisol spikes and cravings

START YOUR DAY WITH FIBRE-RICH BREAKFASTS

Swap refined cereal or white toast for something more nourishing. Try overnight oats with chia seeds and berries, rye bread with smashed avocado

and a poached egg plus hemp seeds, or a smoothie with flaxseed, spinach, and frozen banana.

Why it works: A fibre-rich breakfast helps steady your blood sugar from the get-go, setting your hormones up for a calmer day.

EMBRACE THE POWER OF RAINBOW BOWLS

Filling your plate with colourful veg isnt just pretty – its powerful. Build a rainbow bowl with roasted sweet potatoes, steamed greens, cooked lentils or chickpeas, fermented veg, and a tahini drizzle.

Benefit: You'll hit your fibre goals without even noticing, and your gut microbes will love you for it.

SPRINKLE IT ON!

It doesnt have to be complicated. A tablespoon of flaxseed, chia or hemp seeds added to your yoghurt, porridge, salad or soup is an effortless way to add fibre and bonus omega-3s.

Tip: Make a "fibre sprinkle jar" so it's ready to go all week.

DON'T FORGET PULSES

Beans, lentils, and chickpeas are packed with fibre and plant-based protein. You don't need to overhaul your diet overnight – just a few fibre-friendly shifts this June can leave you feeling more energised, clear-headed and hormonally supported.

Hannah's book Everything I Know About Hormones is out now. Pick up your copy at The Berkhamsted Bookshop.

My Perfect Weekend

A peek into the weekends of Berkhamsted locals, from Friday wine tasting to Sunday roasts. Local resident David O'Neill shares his favourite spots for canal runs, market shopping and boardgame gatherings

I SPECIALISE IN...

Film production, though my true passion is hunting down the perfect Bloody Mary.

I'M FROM...

Yorkshire originally, which might explain my straightforward approach to life. After spending time in London, I was drawn to Berkhamsteds unique charm and community spirit. What struck me most was how people here want to know who you are as a person, rather than what you do for a living.

FRIDAY...

The weekend begins the moment I settle into a seat outside Mercurio’s with a large glass of southern Italian wine. Between 6-8pm, they have an acoustic guitaristadd one of their cheese and ham boards, and the weekend has officially started. Later, friends and I might saunter across to Prime for a lean steak and their irresistible mac and blue cheese side dishes.

SATURDAY...

Mornings start with a run along the canal, followed by a visit to the market to pick up grazing supplies for later – the Portuguese

pastéis de nata and cheese stalls deserve special mention. Coffee is essential, with a coin toss deciding between Jesters or Fred & Ginger, both offering exceptional iced lattes with hazelnut. For breakfast on special occasions, Plates is unbeatable, as much for its brilliant atmosphere as its food. Afternoons often involve a long walk with an audiobook, intentionally routing myself towards the Fishery Wharf Café (for their excellent Bloody Marys). Evenings typically find us tucked into a corner at The Rising Sun or enjoying The Bulls beer garden.

SUNDAY…

Theres only one destination for Sunday roast – The Alford Arms. Their brilliant wine selection perfectly complements what might be the best roast in Hertfordshire.

BERKO TRADITIONS...

The Rising Suns cheese nights are unmissable, as are the canal floating markets when they dock in town. A recent discovery was Burns Night at The Great Gatsby – after experiencing it for the first time this year, its already in the calendar for next January. Some traditions are worth establishing immediately.
