Step into an enchanted musical world as acclaimed musicians Viv McLean (piano) and Clare O’Connell (cello) perform works inspired by folk tales and fairy stories. The programme begins with Janáček’s Pohádka (A Tale), based on a Russian epic poem that captivated the composer. Dvořák’s dreamy, lyrical Silent Woods takes listeners to a magical place of stillness, while Medtner's captivating Skazki (Fairy Tales) for solo piano draw on diverse inspirations from literature and Russian folklore. renovated barn in Aldbury, Claire Garner and her talented team weave beauty into everyday living. “I�ve always been led by my senses and knew in my teens that I wanted to work with textiles - and people,” explains Claire, who studied textile design at university. “When first starting, I loved to connect with clients. While Claire notes a recent shift toward warmer, earthier colour palettes inspired by nature, she emphasises that each project is individually tailored. “We are clientcentred in our approach and will be led by their requirements and the atmosphere they wish to feel in the space,” she explains. “Every design is different.” Claire�s team takes inspiration from clients� interests, hobbies, artwork and lifestyle, observing their existing items. “It�s amazing what re-upholstery and even simply changing the location of items can do to alter the look and feel of a space”, Claire adds. This personalised approach is evident in projects like Pippin House in York, currently in its final installation stage. “Even though our calls and meetings have been virtual, I feel we've connected, 10

and I�ve understood what they wanted to achieve for their home. Seeing their whole house transforming into their dream property has been a truly special experience.” For those seeking Claire�s signature style for their own homes, the studio now offers an online shop featuring hand-crafted products, including upholstered furniture, custom TV frames, oak trays and handwoven baskets. ––––

A celebration of creativity The Berkhamsted Art Society’s Spring Art Fair brings together local talent for a weekend of art, crafts, and community spirit

he Berkhamsted Art Society’s

Spring Art Fair is back, bringing together local talent for a weekend of art, crafts, and community spirit. This event is a must-see, offering a unique chance to explore the creativity right here in our town. With a variety of artworks on display - paintings, ceramics, glassware, and greeting cards - this year’s fair is sure to impress. One of the highlights of the fair is the sheer diversity of works on display. From bold contemporary paintings to delicate ceramics and intricate glass pieces, there’s something for every taste. Plus, for those looking for a special gift or a local keepsake, there will be a beautiful selection of hand-crafted greeting cards. Many of the pieces will be available for purchase, so if something catches your eye, you can take it home with you. But the fair is more than just an opportunity to buy art. Yoga for a cause Attend a class to support the Hospice of St Francis

Emma Parkes-McQueen is walking the Ridgeway�s 87 miles this May to raise money for the Hospice of St Francis. To support her fundraising efforts, she�s offering a special donation-based Yoga Nidra session at All Saints Church on Shrublands Road. Yoga Nidra, often described as ‘yoga sleep,’ is the deeply relaxing practice typically experienced at the end of yoga classes, where participants lie comfortably on the floor. This accessible form of meditation offers profound relaxation benefits without requiring any physical exertion – making it perfect for everyone, regardless of yoga experience. “I believe yoga is a gift; it nurtures, softens and strengthens body and mind,” explains Emma, who has called Berko home for nearly 18 years. “Wherever you are in your life and whatever you are going through, yoga has a way of helping you work through it. Be it a tight hamstring or a broken heart.” Emma has been practicing yoga for 28 years and founded her yoga

business Love From Yoga in 2018. Her teaching philosophy embraces inclusivity and accessibility: “My classes are for everybody, every shape and every age,” she emphasises. “You don�t need to be flexible to start; if you're not flexible, then you will benefit the most.” The Hospice of St Francis provides palliative and end-of-life care, offering local support to patients, families, and loved ones facing serious illnesses. This includes care at the hospice, care at home, a health and wellbeing center, and advice for those worried about a loved one. The session takes place on Friday 2nd May at 7.30pm. A cherished event that has delighted visitors for over 150 years, it�s organised by a dedicated team of volunteer parents, supporting Aldbury�s local charities and village groups, including the primary school. A traditional parade winds through the village, followed by the crowning of the 16

May Queen and King. Visitors can watch the children of Aldbury Primary School dancing around the maypole and enjoy the lively Aldbury Morris Men performing in the village – these long-held traditions make the Aldbury May Fair unique. The main festival stage hosts performances throughout the day, including returning favourites Duo Symphony, with their electrifying blend of pop, rock, and opera. The acoustic stage at the Village Green features folk-inspired acts like BlueJam Acoustic and Firebird.

Berkhamsted cellist celebrates new album Clare O'Connell launches Light Flowing, a radiant collection of commissioned works for solo cello

London�s Kings Place will mark the release of Berkhamsted-based cellist Clare O�Connell�s new album Light Flowing. This collection features newly commissioned works for solo and layered cello inspired by concepts of light, depth, and simplicity. Clare, a familiar face to many local music lovers through her Behind the Mirror concert series in Berkhamsted, has been actively commissioning new music since 2011. During the pandemic, she expanded her repertoire with her first solo album, The Isolated Cellist, and now continues her creative journey with this second release. Light Flowing showcases Clare�s versatility across seven different pieces that each create distinctive moods and atmospheres. Combining Edmund Finnis� transparent writing for solo cello with Natalie Klouda�s rich, layered sounds inspired by the rising midsummer sun, Clare creates captivating soundscapes that range from woodland-inspired textures to minimalist compositions reminiscent of Nick Drake�s folk influences.

For those unfamiliar with contemporary classical music, this album offers an accessible entry point. The pieces focus on melody and atmosphere, creating an immersive listening experience perfect for relaxation or mindful reflection. The music bridges traditional classical techniques with modern sensibilities – think of it as the classical equivalent of acoustic folk music, with a modern twist. Beyond her solo work, Clare collaborates with numerous acclaimed musicians and has performed with artists ranging from Radiohead to Sir Paul McCartney. Her arrangements have been performed in Westminster Abbey and the Wigmore Hall, and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. With degrees from Oxford University and the Royal College of Music, Clare brings both scholarly insight and passionate musicianship to her performances. As composer Harvey Brough notes, “She has a deep understanding of the way music works and a joy in the simple act of playing, which illuminates everything.” The album launch concert takes place on Thursday 1st May at Kings Place, London. For those who prefer to enjoy Clare's music closer to home, the album will be released on April 25th with NMC Recordings and her local Behind the Mirror concerts in Berkhamsted regularly feature similar innovative programming.

Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care is appealing for donations of precious metals and jewellery – with Markyate resident Barrie at the heart of this golden opportunity. Barrie volunteers his expertise as a former antiques dealer to transform donations into funding for the charity's vital services. Working 8-12 hours weekly at the charity�s retail support hub on Northbridge Road, he meticulously assesses, values, cleans and repairs donations from across Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. “At a glance, I can make an initial assessment on whether something might be valuable,” explains Barrie. “Then, I have specialised tools to more accurately determine value, age, weight and authenticity.” His professional toolkit includes acid testing kits for verifying genuine gold or silver, diamond testers, and precision jewellery scales. “The value of gold and silver is strong at the moment, so it�s important to get the right price,” he adds. The charity is particularly interested in 28

gold and silver jewellery, coins, watches (especially vintage models), military medals and silverware. Even broken or damaged items can generate value from the metal when sold by weight. It�s peak planting time for seedlings and cuttings nurtured through winter, while the landscape is awash with fresh green leaves and the frothy white of hawthorn blossom and cow parsley filling country lanes. Mornings often begin with a soft, gentle light and dew on the grass, leading into those perfect days for drying washing on the line. Apple, pear, and plum trees are alive with the hum of pollinating bees; in many places, the N ̒ o Mow May� challenge helps create beautiful, temporary wildflower meadows essential for supporting biodiversity. –––– FLOWER OF THE MONTH: FOXGLOVE

Elegant and statuesque, foxgloves thrive in the shady areas around Berkhamsted and are a favourite in the cutting garden when sown as biennials. Their towering spires come in myriad colours, from deep rose to soft apricot and pure white. The Dalmatian varieties, with their heavily speckled throats, act as a guiding runway for bees, making them not only pretty but also invaluable to pollinators. 34
