A spectacular summer at Waddesdon Manor

The French Renaissance-style chateau will host three stand-out events this summer

Celebrate the season your way at Waddesdon Manor! Summer of Play (23rd July28th August) transforms the estate into a playground, the historic Eythrope Walled Garden Open Day (16th August) marks 150 years of horticultural excellence, and Chilli Fest (29th-31st August) spices up the season's fnale. Plus, there’s more…

JULY ADVENTURES

The month kicks of with Pablo Bronstein's groundbreaking exhibition, The Temple of Solomon and its Contents (16th July2nd November), where the artist presents

a bold new body of work responding to Waddesdon Manor as a Jewish country house. His grand assembly of paintings on paper reimagines the legendary Temple of Solomon, alongside carefully selected historic drawings from Waddesdon's exceptional collection. It's contemporary art in conversation with history – exactly the kind of intellectual stimulation that makes Waddesdon special.

Bookworms shouldn't miss Books at the Barn on 16th July, featuring Gill Hornby discussing her new novel, The Elopement. As author of Miss Austen – recently adapted into the major BBC series starring Keeley Hawes – Hornby brings insights into the

social history of Jane Austen's era, perfect for anyone who appreciates period drama with authentic historical detail.

The Summer Theatre programme launches on 19th July with Macbeth, performed by Unbound Theatre in the atmospheric Manor grounds. There's something wonderful about watching Shakespeare unfold against centuries-old architecture. Pack a blanket, bring a picnic, and prepare for theatre as it was meant to be experienced, under (hopefully cloudless) open skies.

The crown jewel of July activities is Summer of Play (23rd July-28th August. From garden games and outdoor theatre

to axe throwing and circus workshops, each week brings exciting new activities in the picturesque Manor gardens. The real bonus? Children enjoy completely free entry to house and grounds – a generous gesture that makes family days out both memorable and afordable.

AUGUST HIGHLIGHTS

August brings an exciting frst at Waddesdon: Eythrope Walled Garden

Open Day on 16th August, celebrating the magnifcent gardens' 150th anniversary –a unique chance to explore one of Britain's fnest working gardens. Alice de Rothschild created these remarkable grounds in 1875,

transforming what was "little more than a swamp and a wilderness" into today's four-acre paradise of historic glasshouses, thriving orchards, and impressive kitchen gardens.

Whether you're a home gardener seeking inspiration, a garden historian researching old traditions, or a professional hoping to learn new techniques, this visit promises to intrigue, inform, and inspire. Live music accompanies the day, with refreshments and garden produce available for purchase – a perfect celebration of horticultural excellence.

The same evening, the Eythrope Garden Produce Dinner showcases the

TJ WATT
2025 ILLYRIA
THEATRE

estate-to-table philosophy at its fnest. Executive Chef Craig Clark and Head Chef Ben Thurkettle create an elegant four-course menu from hand-harvested Eythrope ingredients. Set within the timeless Manor Restaurant, this dinner is the ultimate celebration of provenance, seasonality, and culinary artistry.

Summer theatre continues throughout August with HMS Pinafore, As You Like It, Alice Through the Looking Glass, and A Midsummer Night's Dream – each performance bringing classic stories to life in the estate's atmospheric setting.

The season culminates with Chilli Fest (29th-31st August), Waddesdon's beloved

festival that spices up the Aviary and Pleasure Gardens. Discover artisan traders, enjoy live entertainment, participate in family-friendly activities, and sample chilliinspired menus. It's the perfect fnale of a summer of exceptional experiences.

This summer, Waddesdon proves that heritage sites can be simultaneously historic and contemporary, ofering experiences that educate, entertain, and create lasting memories for visitors of all ages.

Sunshine, community, and natural beauty - summer essentials that our local area delivers in abundance (well, the last two, anyway). From quietly fascinating talks and walks to spirited pirate adventures, July and August promise unforgettable experiences right on your doorstep.

History comes alive at remarkable destinations like Chiltern Open Air Museum, where Classic Vehicle shows and Britain at War demonstrations transport families through time, while Bletchley Park reveals wartime secrets through codebreaking workshops and outdoor theatre. Meanwhile, Frogmore Paper Mill continues its remarkable restoration journey with fascinating talks showcasing craftspeople’s traditional skills.

Adorable lion cubs have joined elephants and penguins at Whipsnade Zoo, where conservation meets adventure, and The Bucks Goat Centre welcomes visitors to meet playful residents including

baby Montague. Park Hill Farm ofers enchanting alpaca walks and unicorn adventures.

Transport enthusiasts can ride 'England's Friendly Little Line' at Leighton Buzzard Railway, with dinosaur days and beer festivals.

Literary adventures await at the Roald Dahl Museum in Great Missenden, extending summer hours for school holidays, while equally important stories are thoughtfully told at The National Museum of Computing. Put the smartphones down and try hands-on workshops, stopping to hear how a humble bakery invented the frst business computer.

Natural beauty reaches its peak at Hitchin Lavender Fields, celebrating 25 years of purple splendour with evening dining experiences and guided tours - prime Instagram fodder. Whether you'd like to relive your childhood, get up and close with local wildlife or simply seek a new perfect picnic spot, we have something in mind. Where will summer take you?

Chiltern Open Air Museum

Forget dusty displays behind rope barriers, this unique open-air museum is a living, breathing portal to our past

At Chiltern Open Air Museum, families can tackle handson experiences in over 30 reconstructed historic buildings in a charming rural setting.

Founded by passionate volunteers from the Chiltern Society in 1976, this 45-acre site upholds a mission that feels revolutionary in today’s throwaway culture: rescuing historic buildings destined for demolition and giving them new life. What began as a preservation project has evolved into something very special – a refreshingly hands-on approach to celebrating our area’s history.

Kids will love stepping into an authentic World War I soldier costume or raiding the Victorian dress-up corner. The adventure playground ensures even the most historyresistant teenagers fnd their groove, while woodland trails ofer peaceful moments for parents and carers. July promises to be particularly spectacular. The Classic Vehicles Show on the 19th and 20th delivers pure nostalgia – the kind that has grandfathers explaining carburettors to mystifed grandchildren!

A special Historic Crafts Weekend on the 27th and 28th brings traditional crafts to life. You can learn the process of natural dyeing and how our ancestors gave colour to their clothes, observe spinning demonstrations to discover how sheep feece is made into wool and discover other textile crafts such as lacemaking and felting. The village blacksmith and farrier was an important person, step into their forge and hear the clash of the hammer as they manipulate metal into shape.

August ramps up the excitement with The Longest Yarn 2, a 60-metre knitted and crocheted artwork commemorating VE Day that’s as Instagram-worthy as it is historically signifcant. The spectacular

Britain at War event on the 9th and 10th is a special highlight of the summer.

Multi-period demonstrations, gunfre, horses, living history camps, Lindy hop dancing and a special RAF Dakota fyover provide something to entertain the whole family.

The Ragged Victorians living history event deserves special mention for its subversive take on heritage education. Rather than a sanitised historical presentation, costumed reenactors inhabit the Museum’s buildings as street urchins, rogues, and rat catchers. It’s history with its sleeves rolled up, perfect for children studying Victorians at school but brilliant enough to captivate adults who thought they knew everything about the period.

What truly distinguishes this museum is its environmental consciousness. The site maintains itself using traditional methods, growing vegetables for its café, coppicing woodland for fuel and building materials, and housing seven beehives that support local pollinators. The mid-site toilets feature an eco-friendly reed bed drainage system that’s genuinely fascinating –proof that sustainability and heritage preservation make natural partners.

The Museum’s famous Terrifc Tuesdays take place every Tuesday throughout the holidays and are flled with themed family activities and clay modelling. The Family Room provides respite for overwhelmed toddlers, while weekend beeswax candlemaking ofers hands-on creativity that produces genuine keepsakes.

Chiltern Open Air Museum operates as an independent charity, funded entirely through admissions, memberships, and that crucial ingredient that makes everything possible: an extraordinary team of volunteers fuelled by genuine passion (and cake). It’s this combination of professional expertise and community spirit that creates a rather special atmosphere.

Chiltern Open Air Museum educates without preaching and preserves the past while embracing the future. Dive into our area’s rich history, and ignite your passion for preserving cultural heritage.

Frogmore Paper Mill

Step inside the world’s oldest mechanised paper mill - where industry, invention, and heritage come alive

Standing proudly in Hemel Hempstead, Frogmore Paper Mill holds an extraordinary distinction as the world's oldest mechanised paper mill – quite literally the birthplace of paper's industrial revolution. This remarkable site has witnessed a thousand years of industrial heritage, and today operates as a fascinating visitor experience that celebrates the huge contribution paper has played in shaping our modern world.

The mill's story reaches its pivotal moment in 1803, when Henry and Sealy Fourdrinier selected Frogmore for trials of their newly patented paper machine. This breakthrough launched the paper's industrial revolution, leading directly to the cheap, plentiful paper products we use daily.

Operated by Apsley Paper Trail, a dedicated conservation and education charity, Frogmore remains a working paper mill where the emphasis falls frmly on providing a genuinely diferent visitor experience. The paper machines are both well over a century old, and much of the mill appears exactly as it did during Queen Victoria's reign – an authentic glimpse into nineteenth-century industrial life.

Volunteer guides escort visitors through the machinery, explaining processes and power sources while revealing the curious history of papermaking. Guests discover how handmade paper is created and even craft their own sheets. The experience

extends to letterpress printing, exploring its history and practice while pondering the profound impact that paper and print have had on civilisation.

The mill's resilience shines particularly bright following the devastating 2022 arson that destroyed irreplaceable historical artefacts. Full tours will not return until 2026, but for now, special events and hard hat tours will tell the site’s incredible stories.

Enjoy family activities like Storyboats, boat hire, street food events, history talks, and school outreach workshops. The special 'Meet the Craftsperson' series continues through July, ofering intimate evenings with skilled professionals who've contributed to Frogmore's restoration. On July 11th, heritage carpenter Louis Curtis presents his expertise alongside prosecco and nibbles for £10 per person.

As a self-fnancing charitable trust, all proceeds support the ongoing repair, maintenance, and development of this unique industrial heritage site. Frogmore Paper Mill promises an experience that's decidedly not 'run of the mill' – a place where history, craftsmanship, and industrial innovation converge!

Time to get summer ready

Prepare your skin for the sun with Regents Park Aesthetics

As the days grow warmer, our skin needs a little extra TLC to stay radiant and protected.

At Regents Park Aesthetics in Berkhamsted, we understand that preparing your skin properly is key to avoiding sun damage.

START WITH SMART SUN PROTECTION

The basis of summer skincare is highquality SPF. It is important to look for a SPF of 30 or higher and one that is broadspectrum, meaning it protects from UVA (ageing and long-term skin damage) and UVB (the rays that burn and cause skin cancer).

There are two main types of sunscreen: physical (mineral) and chemical. Physical sunscreens using ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide (we recommend Heliocare 360° Mineral Tolerance Fluid SPF 50) sit on the skin's surface and defect UV rays – ideal for sensitive or acne-prone skin. Chemical sunscreens such as ZO Daily Sheer Broad-Spectrum SPF 50 are non-greasy, neutralising UV radiation with no chalky residues.

iS Clinical Extreme Protect is a hybrid solution, ofering the aesthetic benefts of chemical flters with the broad-spectrum, gentle protection of minerals.

For added benefts, look for tinted SPFs like Heliocare 360° Color Gel Oil or ZO Skin Sunscreen + Powder - Broad Spectrum to even out skin tone while providing protection. Primer-SPFs help makeup adhere better during hot, humid

days. For acne-prone skin, opt for noncomedogenic SPFs.

ADVANCED SOLUTIONS FOR SUN DAMAGE

Despite our best eforts, sun exposure can still lead to dark spots, pigmentation, and uneven skin texture. This is where our revolutionary Harmony XL Pro laser system excels. This cutting-edge technology uses precise light wavelengths to break down pigmentation.

"The Harmony XL Pro is incredibly versatile," explains Kay Greyson, founder of Regents Park Aesthetics, and recently named Aesthetic Nurse of the Year at the 2024 Safety in Beauty Awards. "It's highly efective for reducing sun spots, freckles, and vascular lesions while stimulating collagen production for overall skin rejuvenation."

A time of abundance

July and August are the perfect months to enjoy this green and pleasant land we call ‘Berko’! Local forist Julie Woodford shares seasonal gardening tips for making the most of summer's generous bounty

Stately homes and town parks

ofer wonderful places to relax, play, and be inspired by historic trees and generous planting schemes, come summer. It's also the time to savour the fruits of your labour after carefully tending to containers, allotments, or gardens throughout the year.

This is the season of abundance, and the key to keeping fowers (and salads and vegetables) coming is to pick and deadhead regularly to prevent plants from going to seed. Regular harvesting encourages continuous blooming, ensuring your garden remains productive and beautiful throughout these golden months.

Dry days are also ideal for gathering fowers to press. You can use a fower press or place fowers between sheets of newspaper weighted by a heavy book –creating lasting memories of summer's peak beauty.

English roses will have delivered their frst fush by now. With gentle deadheading and a generous feed of rose food, you should be rewarded with another wave of these beautiful and often scented fowers in late summer.

FLOWERS

OF THE MONTH

JULY – SUNFLOWERS

These iconic, joy-flled fowers now come in a painter's palette of colours from creamy whites and sunny yellows to rich oranges, dusky pinks, and velvety browns. There are plenty compact varieties perfect for cutting. Two favourites include Ruby Eclipse, with its soft pink tones, and Magic Roundabout, a cofee and vanilla beauty with a lovely vintage feel.

TIP: For the best vase life, harvest just before the pollen begins to show.

AUGUST – COSMOS

Cosmos are the ultimate summer companion fower. They are easy to grow, endlessly giving, and wonderfully light-hearted. These cut-and-come-again favourites appear in an array of colours, from pure white and gentle lemon to soft peach and every imaginable shade of pink, right through to deep plum. They also vary in form: from simple daisy-like shapes to frilly cupcakes and futed seashell types.

TIP: Cut early in the morning, strip away excess foliage, and pop straight into water. They will keep on dancing in a vase for over a week!

JULY & AUGUST GARDENING TASKS

1. Pick, feed, weed... repeat! The summer mantra that keeps gardens thriving and productive throughout the growing season.

2. Take softwood cuttings from tender perennials such as salvias, penstemons, and scented pelargoniums. Select healthy, nonfowering stems and make clean cuts just below leaf nodes. Strip away all leaves except the top pair, dip in rooting powder, then insert into pots flled with moist, peat-free compost.

3. Begin collecting seeds on dry days as August draws to a close. Gather seed pods and textured grasses to dry and save for winter arrangements or festive wreaths later in the year.

4. Plant out biennial seedlings like foxgloves, sweet rocket, and sweet williams that were sown in June, giving them time to establish before winter.

5. Start sowing hardy annuals towards the end of August for autumn planting, providing strong starts before frst frosts arrive.

IN THE GREENHOUSE

By now, most plants will be outside enjoying summer warmth, except those preferring Mediterranean climates. This creates perfect opportunities for propagation projects and preparing for autumn transitions.

BE YOUR OWN FLORIST

Gather locally grown fowers, grasses, and textured foliage to create loose, natural hand-tied bouquets. Wrap in paper, tie with string or ribbon, and share with friends, neighbours, or family members – perhaps as thank-you gifts for watering plants during holidays. These personal touches celebrate summer's abundance while strengthening community connections.

Summer's generous bounty rewards careful tending with continuous beauty, fragrance, and the simple joy of working to nature's rhythms.

Why bitters matter for hormone health

Local nutritionist and hormone specialist Hannah Alderson shares the missing favour key to your hormone health this summer

Bitter foods are plants that naturally stimulate taste receptors on your tongue, triggering cascades of digestive processes. Think rocket, chicory, dandelion, grapefruit, radicchio, and even orange peel. Not necessarily the most popular at summer gatherings, but they're working hard behind the scenes.

Here's the key: your body is designed to thrive when it senses bitterness.

WHY BITTERS ARE BETTER

1. Bitters fre up your digestion

Bitter favours signal to your gut to get moving. Saliva fows, stomach acid releases, and bile production increases, setting the stage for efcient digestion and nutrient absorption.

2. They support your liver

The liver clears used hormones like oestrogen. If it's sluggish, hormones get recirculated – cue mood swings, PMS, sore breasts, skin fare-ups and that "why do I feel so pufy?" feeling.

3. They reduce blood sugar spikes

Bitters improve insulin sensitivity and reduce

post-meal glucose crashes. Less crashes equals fewer cravings, better energy, and more stable moods.

4. Bitters stimulate GLP-1

GLP-1 is a gut hormone that regulates appetite, balances blood sugar and supports fat metabolism. It’s the same hormone mimicked by weight loss medications like Ozempic. Bitter foods like grapefruit and rocket can help your body naturally produce more of it – no prescription required.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE DON’T EAT BITTERS?

Digestion slows. Bloating creeps in. The liver struggles. Blood sugar swings. And hormones? They feel the strain.

SIMPLE

WAYS TO ADD BITTERS BACK IN

You don't need tinctures and tonics. Just start with a handful of rocket or chicory before/on your dinner, or enjoy a slice of grapefruit with breakfast. You could try adding a splash of apple cider vinegar to your water before meals, or opt for dandelion tea. If you’re really committed, try a few drops of herbal bitters before your biggest meal of the day. Remember: start small! Bitterness is potent. Over time, your body will crave it. My Perfect Summer

A sneak peek into summer living in Berkhamsted: &Quirky Director Paul Cheshire shares his favourite canal walks, evening drinks and seaside escapes

I LIVE...

Just of Berkhamsted High Street with my husband, Chris. He's lived in Berko all his life, so I moved here when we met. I've since made it home and now run my own shop, &Quirky, right on the High Street.

PERFECT SUMMER EVENING...

Enjoying a BBQ in friends’ gardens or grabbing a Warehouse Pizza takeaway and a glass of chilled white wine - usually from Bobby's. We often start in the Prime Secret Garden, then head to the Rising Sun (the Riser) to catch the last rays of sunshine. We’ll usually fnish the evening with a cocktail at The Gatsby.

SUMMER DINING...

Eating at The Olive Tree instantly transports you to the Mediterraneanit's like a little holiday on a plate. The Highwayman is our go-to spot when catching up with friends. The new tapas menu at The Gatsby is perfect for sharing with a group.

PERFECT SUMMER MORNING...

Most mornings I'm opening the shop, but when I get the chance, I love wandering into town, browsing the market, and grabbing a cofee from Dower House.

SUMMER WALKS...

A favourite route is walking the canal with our friend's dog, stopping of for a cheeky drink at the 3 Horseshoes, then making our way back with a few pit stops at the Riser, The Boat, and Crystal Palace.

SUMMER SHOPPING...

I grab my sunglasses from Berkhamsted Sports, get my nails done at Roxana Beauty, and a haircut or shave at Barber Lads. New summer reads come from The Berkhamsted Bookshop.

SUMMER ESCAPES...

We love visiting friends in Hawridge. A dog walk around the common followed by a bite to eat at the Full Moon is the ideal day escape. Our happy place is by the sea, heading down to Hove and spending time in Brighton. It's where we go to really unwind - and celebrate Brighton Pride, every August.

BERKO SUMMER TRADITIONS...

The tribute night at Chilfest in Tring is always a highlight - great music, great atmosphere, and a really fun night out.
