Quirky meets quality

Step inside &Quirky, a hidden emporium on our high street

You've likely stopped to admire their showstopping window displays – perhaps it was the mischievous elves hosting a disco ball party last Christmas, or another of the award-winning seasonal spectacles that have earned &Quirky local fame. But step inside the boutique, and you’ll discover the magic extends across six rooms, on three floors. Since 2020, the whimsical space has transformed Berkhamsted homes with its distinctive blend of style and cheekiness. “We wanted to bring a bit of fun and the unusual to Berkhamsted’s high street,” explains co-owner Paul. “Home interiors should be different. We aim to brighten up your living space.”

AN EVER-CHANGING INVENTORY

Paul aptly describes &Quirky as a “hidden emporium.” Each floor reveals new discoveries, from practical pieces to conversation starters, all carefully selected to bring joy to the home. “We hand-pick every item in the shop, and so each one is something we love and would buy ourselves,” Paul adds.

The shop's commitment to the extraordinary is evident by its everchanging shelves. An impressive disco ball collection, which began with a playful Christmas window display in 2023, has grown increasingly bold and colourful – with even more spectacular additions planned for the future.

INDEPENDENT SPIRIT

“The saying goes that Britain is a nation of shopkeepers, and it certainly is in my blood,” Paul reflects. “Going into mainstream shops, the styling is very plain to me – I love to offer ‘different’ and ‘crazy’ to customers – we stand out in a world of dullness.”

This independent spirit drives the team to source unique pieces that wont be found in chain stores. Several times a year, they travel to European suppliers and trade shows, seeking out fresh and distinctive

items that challenge the ordinary. Their success story includes the phenomenally popular Press For Champagne bell, which has found homes in residences, restaurants, and hotels worldwide. “As soon as we saw it, we knew it would be a hit,” Paul recalls.

––––

CURATED WITH CARE

The shop's greeting card selection, curated by Paul’s sister Laura, exemplifies their commitment to supporting emerging talent. “We try to take on at least four new card suppliers each season, to keep our cards on trend and have something for everyone,” he explains. This dedication to freshness extends throughout their collections – from lighting that includes whimsical ostrich head wall lights to an expanding range of colourful convex mirrors that customers love to collect.

Current trends are embraced with a distinctive &Quirky twist. This season brings a vibrant palette of green and pink, featuring Cabana Stripes alongside playfully shaped vases, dishes, and candles inspired by fruits and vegetables. Yet the team's buying philosophy remains consistent: “Our ranges change – we try not to repeat items, so if you see it and like it, buy it!”

––––

AWARD-WINNING WINDOWS

The shops creative spirit is perhaps most visible in their legendary window displays, which have earned them not one, but three Best Dressed Window victories in Berkhamsted Citizen’s Association Christmas competition. These displays are a collaboration with Annie from Little Luxe Styling, whose outside-thebox thinking helps capture the attention of passing shoppers. “Planning starts in September,” Paul reveals, “although we are already working on our concept for this year!”

PERSONAL SERVICE

What sets &Quirky apart from larger retailers is Paul’s deeply personal approach to customer service. “We know our products, and try to help customers select the right item for the space,” he explains. Paul’s willingness to source specific items not currently in stock adds another layer to the bespoke service on offer.

The shop is woven into the fabric of Berkhamsted's independent retail community. “We have locals who pass us on the street every day, who we say hello to, and it makes us feel part of the local community.”

&Quirky invites visitors to explore its unique collection. As co-owner Donald always says, “there are three floors to explore, we’re open seven days a week and online all the time.” Whether you visit in person, opt for click-and-collect, or choose delivery, this remarkable space guarantees every purchase will bring a touch of the truly quirky.

A timeless treasure hunt

Berkhamsted Antiques & Vintage Market returns this March, offering an Aladdin’s cave of unique finds

In an era dominated by mass production, there’s something deeply special about the art of antique and vintage shopping. It’s not just about the thrill of the hunt, but about uncovering the story each piece carries. Now in its fourth year, Berkhamsted Antiques & Vintage Market invites you to discover one-of-a-kind treasures, and embrace a sustainable way of shopping without

sacrificing style.

There’s a unique satisfaction in rummaging through an antiques market – and it’s not the same as browsing an antique shop. A market is an entirely different experience. Held on the first Sunday of every month from March to December, the market attracts up to 50 dealers from across the UK, with sellers coming from Norfolk, Kent, London, and beyond. This ensures a dynamic, everchanging collection of items, meaning no two visits are ever quite alike.

As the organisers explain, “Unlike online shopping or large retail stores, our market allows you to see, touch, and appreciate the intricate details of every piece while hearing the stories behind them, directly from the dealers.” This handson experience is what sets Berkhamsted’s market apart – it’s not just about buying

an item; it’s about connecting with the history of the piece and the story of its past.

Whether you’re searching for vintage jewellery, a unique piece of furniture, or something for your garden, the market offers something for every taste. Inside the Civic Centre, you’ll find an exquisite range of jewellery, silver, books, watches, and vintage fashion, while the outdoor stalls feature everything from elegant French mirrors to charming painted furniture. With such an eclectic mix of items, the market caters to both seasoned collectors and those just starting their vintage journey.

Berkhamsted Antiques & Vintage Market is also incredibly accessible. Entry is free, and the welcoming atmosphere ensures that it’s a fun outing for everyone, regardless of budget. You’re even welcome to bring your dog along, making it a family-friendly event. To make the most of your visit, why not start the day with a coffee from one of the market’s excellent neighbouring cafes? Fred & Ginger or

JOAN are perfect stops for a quick pick-me-up before you dive into your treasure hunt.

Every purchase at the market supports small businesses and helps preserve the remarkable stories of these pieces for future generations. Whether it’s your first time visiting or you’re a regular, there’s always something new to discover at this vibrant, ever-evolving market.

So, mark your calendars for the first Sunday of each month, from March to December, and join the growing community of antique and vintage enthusiasts at Berkhamsted Antiques & Vintage Market. You never know what timeless treasure you’ll uncover next.

Giving back in Berkhamsted

Spring is the perfect time to connect with your community, discover how you can contribute to Berkhamsted’s heritage through local volunteering

Spring is the perfect time to connect with your community while developing new skills and friendships. Berkhamsted offers a variety of opportunities to contribute, from gardening to conservation. Here’s how you can lend your skills – and learn new ones along the way.

––––

GARDENING AT RECTORY LANE CEMETERY

Nestled behind The Rex cinema, Rectory Lane Cemetery is a beautiful green space that serves as a sanctuary for both wildlife and visitors. The cemetery is home to a rich history, with many historic monuments in need of care and

conservation. The local community plays a vital role in preserving this important site, and you can contribute by joining the effort to restore and maintain the grounds.

The cemetery was recently recognised as one of the Top Ten Green Flag spaces in the UK in the 2024 People’s Choice Awards, further highlighting its value to the community. By volunteering, you’ll help conserve the historical monuments, repair structures, and support wildlife conservation initiatives.

––––

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?

• Maintain the cemetery grounds and monuments

• Assist with wildlife conservation efforts

• Help with community events and guided tours

• Contribute to research on the cemetery’s history

Volunteering at Rectory Lane Cemetery is a rewarding way to give back to your community, learn new skills, and connect with like-minded individuals who care about preserving Berkhamsted’s heritage.

Being kinder to yourself

Local chartered psychologist and well-being expert Suzy Reading recommends resting in this time of renewal

As the first delicate blossoms unfurl and daylight stretches longer into our evenings, Spring arrives with its characteristic burst of new possibilities. Yet beneath this season’s promise of fresh starts and new beginnings can lurk an undercurrent of anxiety. Our to-do lists seem to multiply like spring seedlings, while expectations – both external and self-imposed – can weigh heavy.

Though naturally energised by Spring’s awakening, you may feel overwhelmed by the pressure to transform every aspect of your life.

Rather than pushing ourselves harder or berating our perceived lack of progress, Reading suggests a gentler approach.

These practices take mere moments but can profoundly shift our relationship with ourselves, especially during times when rest isn't just a luxury – it’s essential.

“Think of these exercises as emergency anchors.” Reading advises. “They’re always available, require no special equipment, and can be done anywhere

– whether you’re feeling overwhelmed at your desk, stressed in a crowded supermarket, or lying awake at night with racing thoughts.” What follows are her three core practices, each one carefully crafted to help you return to yourself with kindness when the world feels too full or too fast.

HANDS TO HEART CHECK-IN

• Notice your thoughts, emotions, and sensations without judgement

• Ask yourself what you need

• Give yourself permission to meet those needs

CRADLE YOUR FACE

• Relax your eyes

• Release your jaw

• Remind yourself you are deserving of tenderness

HOLD YOUR OWN HAND

• Practice the ̒candle breath’ – in through the nose, out through pursed lips

• Remind yourself you can be your own safe place

As we navigate the shifting seasons, Reading reminds us that transformation often comes not from forcing change, but from simple practices that start a quiet revolution of kindness. The greatest gift we can give ourselves is permission to bloom at our own pace.

Follow Suzy on Instagram: @suzyreading

Springtime splendour at Waddesdon Manor

As spring arrives at the magnificent Rothschild château, discover a season of family adventures and natural beauty

This spring, Waddesdon Manor bursts into life with thousands of bulbs and seasonal delights. Built in the 1870s by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, this magnificent French Renaissance-style château offers a perfect blend of historic grandeur and family activities. Looking ahead to Easter, families can take advantage of free entry for children to both house and grounds from 9th-13th and 16th-21st April, making it an ideal holiday destination for Berkhamsted families. ––––

EASTER ADVENTURES

As thousands of beautiful spring bulbs herald the arrival of warmer days, visitors can embark on a special adventure through Waddesdon's historic grounds. The outdoor Easter trail, priced at £3.50 per child (including a chocolate egg), is jampacked with games and creative activities designed for all ages. Young explorers can participate in Easter-themed Hide and Seek, test their observation skills with Eye Spy challenges, and unleash their creativity by helping to decorate a giant Easter scene. The trail concludes with every child receiving their chocolate egg reward.

Pre-booking is essential to guarantee a place in this popular activity.

GETTING OUTSIDE

The woodland playground will be open throughout both weeks of the Easter holidays, offering plenty of space for children to run free and burn off energy. Special face-painting sessions add an extra touch of holiday magic to the experience (additional charges apply). Meanwhile, inside the recently reopened Manor, following its essential winter closure for cleaning and conservation, an additional treat awaits: younger guests can hunt for hidden bunnies tucked away among the grand rooms. ––––

WORLD-CLASS ART

The Manor houses one of the finest collections of art in the world. Visitors

PETER GREENWAY

can explore outstanding English portraits and Dutch old masters alongside exquisite French decorative arts. The collection, carefully curated by Baron Ferdinand, represents the pinnacle of 18th-century craftsmanship and artistry. Changing exhibitions throughout the year ensures theres always something new to discover.

GARDENS IN BLOOM

Set within a magnificent 6,000-acre estate, Waddesdons gardens showcase exceptional Victorian horticulture. The iconic Victorian Parterre dazzles with its seasonal bedding displays, while the ornate Rococostyle Aviary continues its important work conserving rare birds. Unique features like the Pulham rockwork and 3D bird bedding sculptures demonstrate Rothschilds pioneering approach to garden design. The stunning lawns provide the perfect

backdrop for springtime exploration, with winding paths and hidden corners waiting to be discovered.

TASTE AND TRADITION

Expert aesthetic care

Regents Park Aesthetics offers the best quality treatments and gold-standard technology

When Kay Greveson searched for the perfect location to expand her established London aesthetics practice, Berkhamsteds independent spirit and close-knit community captured her heart. An Advanced Nurse Practitioner with over 16 years of NHS experience, Kay founded Regents Park Aesthetics in 2012, building it from one treatment room on Wimpole Street to an international brand with clinics in London, Berkhamsted and Antigua.

As the areas only CQC-regulated medical aesthetic clinic – a distinction shared with doctors, dentists and hospitalsthe practice maintains exacting standards. All injectable treatments are undertaken by an all-female team of fully qualified nurses and doctors, hand-picked by Kay for their exceptional patient care and aesthetic skills.

“Were known for giving honest advice,” Kay explains. “We do not oversell or advise

patients to have treatments they dont need. We are very much results-driven and what we offer is what we genuinely know will give a good result.”

This ethos has earned the clinic a ̒Good CQC rating – a significant achievement in aesthetics – alongside 24 five-star reviews from Berkhamsted patients.

Kays expertise was further recognised when she won Aesthetic Nurse of the Year at the 2024 Safety in Beauty Awards.

The clinic offers cutting-edge treatments including the Soprano Titanium laser hair removal system and Emface and Exion technology, combining muscle toning with radio frequency. Free consultations include a detailed skin scan that peers beneath the surface to determine optimal treatment paths.

Community collaboration is central to their approach. Kay works closely with local nutritionist Hannah Anderson and The Menopause Medic to provide holistic and comprehensive care. As platinum corporate sponsors of The Hospice of St Francis, theyve developed a special facial with 100% of proceeds supporting the charity.

“We create a luxurious and welcoming environment where you can come in, have a coffee and get to know us,” says Kay. Open six days a week including Sundays, the clinic prioritises accessibility and personal connection. “I still have patients from when I started up twelve years ago, and theyve referred friends and family. Its really important to nurture those connections.”

The first day of spring

March brings longer, lighter, and (hopefully) warmer days.

Local florist Julie Woodford shares seasonal gardening tips

Late March is the perfect time to plant and sow seeds; the garden awakens with bright bursts of colour from early spring flowers, delicate blossoms and leaf tips.

Hardy annuals can be started, as they will tolerate any lingering frosts and reward you with flowers later in the season.

FLOWERS OF THE MONTH: DAFFODILS & NARCISSUS

Arriving before the rest of the garden wakes up, daffodils and narcissus bring welcome cheer. Beyond the classic yellow trumpet varieties found in supermarkets, these springtime favourites come in a stunning range – miniature and delicate, large and ruffled, fragrant, doubled, and even multicoloured. Hardy and easy to grow, they brighten beds, borders, and vases with minimal effort. My favourite is Sir Winston Churchill – sitting on a strong stem they are highly scented, dense,

multi-headed cream flowers with a rich yellow centre.

MARCH 30TH: MOTHERING SUNDAY

The origins of Mother’s Day trace back to ancient celebrations of motherhood and fertility, and since the 16th century, it has been marked in the UK on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

The most important part of Mother’s Day is celebrating in your own way, whether that’s cooking someone a surprise breakfast, writing a heartfelt note, taking a walk together, or sharing tea and cake.

Many choose to gift flowers, and our Wild & Gathered hand-tied bouquets are curated especially for Mother’s Day. With a just-picked, garden-inspired feel, these English flowers are available to collect or order from Cook & Butler in Berkhamsted.

MARCH GARDENING TASKS

1. Divide herbaceous perennials to rejuvenate and multiply your plants

2. Give the lawn its first cut if the ground is dry.

3. Choose a high setting on the mower

4. Check for self-seeded plants - you may find free seedlings to pot up or reposition

5. Plant out sweet pea seedlings for a fragrant summer display

6. Pot up dahlia tubers early if you plan to take cuttings

7. Feed potted plants with a liquid fertiliser to encourage strong spring growth

8. Don’t forget to change the clocks! The clocks go forward on March 30th

Eating to fight inflammation

Want to balance hormones and boost your wellbeing? Choose inflammation-fighting foods, says nutritionist and hormone specialist

Hannah Alderson

Diet-induced inflammation plays a crucial role in hormonal imbalance and overall health. Unlike acute inflammation from injuries, this chronic low-grade inflammation can significantly impact your body's functions. By focusing on diet, gut health, and lifestyle choices, you can create a strong foundation for reduced inflammation and improved hormonal balance – go big, or go home, I say!

Here are key strategies supported by scientific evidence:

OMEGA-3 RICH FOODS

These essential fatty acids help counteract excessive omega-6 intake, which can drive inflammation. The Mediterranean diet is anti-inflammatory eating at its finest – it exemplifies how to incorporate these foods effectively into daily meals. Oily fish, grass-fed meats, walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds are excellent sources.

EAT THE RAINBOW

Blue, red, and purple plant-based foods contain Anthocyanin, a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. These vibrant foods provide essential nutrients while actively fighting inflammation. Include a rainbow of fruits and vegetables in your daily meals.

LOW GLYCAEMIC FOODS

Going on the blood sugar rollercoaster ride can drive inflammation, as the mechanism of insulin resistance is proinflammatory. This is bad news for your hormones. Choose whole, unprocessed foods that provide steady energy release.

WHOLE FOODS

Minimally processed foods form the cornerstone of an anti-inflammatory diet. These foods retain their natural nutritional properties and help maintain stable blood glucose levels, crucial for preventing inflammation.

It's important to understand that reducing inflammation involves more than just adding specific foods to your diet. Research shows that inflammatory responses often stem from multiple factors, including ultra-processed food consumption, blood sugar imbalances, and excessive omega-6 intake.

For lasting results, focus on the bigger picture. Maintain stable blood sugar levels by including protein and healthy fats at every meal.

Rather than viewing antiinflammatory eating as a restrictive diet, consider it a comprehensive approach to nourishing your body and supporting long-term hormonal health.

My Perfect Weekend

A peek into the weekends of Berkhamsted locals, from Friday cocktails to Sunday lie-ins. Siobhán Doran, photographer and artist, shares her favourite spots for coffee, canal-side walks and vintage finds

I SPECIALISE IN...

Architectural and interior design photography.

I'M FROM...

Ireland originally, but after university and a stint in London, Ive called Berkhamsted home for 17 years. I live in a canal-side house with my partner Atul, his son Max and our labradoodle Charlie.

BERKHAMSTED IS...

A dog-loving, easy-going market town with enough independents to entertain and only a quick train ride to London when you need some culture. It’s got a wonderful community of artists, craftspeople and designers.

FRIDAY...

We do love the Alford Arms but if we want a shorter walk, the Bull is really cosy and friendly.

SATURDAY...

I start with a run, then head home to collect Charlie for a stroll through town – he insists on visiting the dog stall at the market for his weekly treat. In rugby season there’s nothing better than watching Ireland play their rivals in the Six Nations.

SUNDAY...

We’re spoilt for choice coffee-wise – sitting outside Dower House on a summer’s day

is lovely. I love Faire Café for its modern Scandi/industrial edge, and if I’m craving a scone, there’s only one place in town – Gail’s.

BERKO TRADITIONS…

We often meander cross-country to Berkhamsted golf course, taking one of many trail routes back to the Grand Union Canal. A pit stop at the Riser or The Bull is a must to complete the circuit.

GOOD TO KNOW...

The vintage and antique scene here is excellent. Returned to Glory on Northbridge Road is great for midcentury furniture bargains, supporting The Hospice of St Francis. Follow @returnedtoglory for updates. Home & Colonial, Cook & Butler, and our monthly Antique & Vintage Market are worth exploring too. Don’t overlook the charity shops – I’ve acquired some fantastic vintage pieces in their homeware sections.

ONE LAST THING...

My favourite local yearly event is Herts Open Studios in September, where local artists and craftspeople open their studios to visitors. It’s a wonderful celebration of our creative community.
