Open all day, every day, private gym My Fit Pod is changing the ftness game in Berkhamsted
It’s the time of year when many of us turn our thoughts to getting a little ftter. A private gym space where no one can bother you sounds ideal right about now. Did you know there’s one on Berkhamsted’s Lower Kings Road?
“Imagine your own private gym, open 24/7, 365 days a year. Just you, and state-of-the-art equipment.” My Fit Pod Berkhamsted owner Craig King is confdent in his product. Since opening in January 2024, his private gym has ofered an innovative solution for those who want to work out on their own terms (and sometimes, just on their own).
Any day, any time, users have the fexibility to exercise whenever it fts into their busy lives. No waiting your turn to use a kettlebell, no crowded changing
rooms, and absolutely no pressure. Each booking guarantees the gym space is yours alone (unless you choose to bring a friend or two).
“You’re in charge. You pick the music, the equipment is all yours for your booking, and there’s no waiting time,” owner Craig King explains. ––––
A GYM THAT PUTS YOU IN CONTROL
The idea behind My Fit Pod is simple yet efective: it’s a one-stop destination for people of all ftness levels. “Our star is and always will be, the My Fit Pod gym itself. It’s not about gimmicks or trends –it’s about providing a top-quality, private ftness destination for people who want to work out on their own terms,” Craig says.
You can expect state-of-the-art
equipment, including a Peloton treadmill and bike, Skier machine, and a variety of strength training gear. Members can book the space by the hour via an app, so there are never any surprises.
“You’re not just coming for a workout –it’s an experience,” Craig adds, pointing out well-considered touches, like Bluetooth connectivity. The en-suite bathroom has a shower, meaning members don’t have to rush home to get ready after a session.
THE PERFECT SOLUTION FOR BUSY PARENTS
Finding time to exercise while managing family life can feel like an impossible task - for many parents, My Fit Pod is the ideal set-up. “Mums and Dads express how convenient it is to be able to bring a
car seat down and remove the obstruction of childcare getting in the way of their workout!” Craig adds.

Whether you’re fully embracing January’s motivation with a fresh gym routine or looking to shake up your ftness schedule, My Fit Pod has something for you. Craig notes, “My Fit Pod Berkhamsted is perfect for everyone – from seasoned athletes to complete beginners. Whether you’re just starting your ftness journey or you’re a regular gym-goer, My Fit Pod welcomes all with an inclusive and stress-free environment.”
The beauty of My Fit Pod lies in its fexibility and commitment to providing a premium, hassle-free experience. The gym space accommodates individuals, friends, or small groups - whatever works best for you. ––––
A COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY
My Fit Pod is dedicated to the Berkhamsted community it serves, too. Craig has long held a soft spot for the town, which is one of the reasons he chose it as the location for his gym.
“Berkhamsted has always been a location I have loved to visit. There are so many amazing businesses and a real community feel that I always wanted to be a part of,” he says.
For Craig, Berkhamsted’s small-town atmosphere and sense of connection is the ideal setting for a business like My Fit Pod, because personalised service is at the core of everything they do. “Berkhamsted
is renowned for its rich variety of unique and innovative businesses you just can’t fnd anywhere else. Every corner of the town ofers something unique and that’s what makes the high street so vibrant,” he explains.
As for how My Fit Pod fts in, Craig is excited to continue expanding the brand. “We’re thrilled to be approaching our frst anniversary and look forward to another year of helping locals achieve their ftness goals.”
Convenient, private, and friendly to all, My Fit Pod is committed to breaking down your barriers to getting ft in 2025 - whether that’s childcare or a busy professional life. As he puts it, “No queues, no stares, no stress. It’s ftness without the fuss.” ––––

The Ashridge House Wedding Showcase matches couples and their dream "I do”
Finding your perfect wedding venue feels a bit like falling in love - when you know, you know.
On Sunday 26th January 2025, over 40 wedding exhibitors will fock to the magnifcent Grade I listed building Ashridge House, promising to transform countless wedding dreams into reality - complete with bubbles and canapés.
Ashridge House is steeped in history (once home to Henry VIII and Elizabeth I!), but despite the magnifcence of the venue, there’s a surprisingly friendly, laidback feel. Whether you arrive with bridesmaids or visit as a couple, you'll receive a warm welcome and expert guidance from the passionate wedding team. All visitors are automatically entered into a giveaway, with goodie bags and exclusive on-the-day special ofers.
Your visit might begin with exploring all the possible photo spots in the colourful Grade II* gardens - one of a handful with this recognition in the UK - or a fat white and a pastry at the charming Bakehouse café, stacked with cakes and bakes.
Next, you'll discover the venue’s most distinctive feature is its versatility. With a capacity for up to 170 guests, it features its own chapel, described as one of James Wyatt’s architectural masterpieces.
Humphry Repton, the greatest landscape gardener of his day, was commissioned to design the formal gardens, and they
remain the fnest surviving example of his work. As one might imagine, there are countless photo opportunities. One thing that steals visitors' hearts time and again is the iconic cantilevered staircase: "Couples often choose to hold their ceremony here," the wedding team explains, "though the private chapel is equally popular”.
What makes this showcase truly special is the opportunity to see Ashridge House come alive as if it’s the big day itself. "Rooms are taken over by diferent suppliers, set up as if for real weddings”, explains the team. “Couples can be inspired by the spaces and setups, and have our team on hand to talk through ideas”. Suppliers and vendors are mostly local, ensuring authenticity while supporting Berkhamsted’s community. They’ll take the stress out of providing everything from fowers to farm-fresh menu ingredients, some herbs for the wedding menus even grown in the estate's gardens.
Each space tells its own story, from the sophisticated Lady Marian Alford Room with its futed columns of rose serpentine marble, to Repton Hall, the grand 180-seater dining room that was once a conservatory. The Loggia overlooks the Mediterranean-esque Italian Gardens, complete with stunning foor-to-ceiling windows.
Walking around, couples can picture their guests enchanted by whimsical frework displays, enjoying the gym and pool during the wedding weekend, and celebrating in resplendent rooms with palatial marble freplaces and gold leafadorned ceilings. What’s more, they can imagine themselves in the venue’s brandnew honeymoon suite, recently unveiled to add a further layer of luxury.
“Couples can be inspired by the spaces, setups, and suppliers, and have our team on hand to discuss their unique vision”
Outside, 190 acres of gardens provide year-round backdrops for photos, though the interiors compete admirably for attention. "We're beautiful in every season," the team notes proudly.
Planning ahead? Special ofers are available for 2025 dates booked during
the showcase. The venue's expert wedding team advises booking 12-18 months ahead to secure your preferred date. “We're seeing more couples choosing non-traditional days," the team shares. "Thursday weddings are having a moment." If you fnd yourself deciding on the spot, The Vault cocktail bar ofers a stylish place to raise a toast.
The beauty of Ashridge House lies in its ability to be both grand and intimate, historic and contemporary. As the wedding team proudly notes, they're "experts in their feld, and truly passionate.”
“We promise to go above and beyond to help bring your unique vision to life.”
For remaining 2025 dates or to discuss 2026 bookings, contact the wedding team ahead of your visit.

How to have a gentle January
Local chartered psychologist and wellbeing expert Suzy Reading explores how this year’s resolutions can look diferent
As the last traces of festive indulgence fade, many of us feel the familiar pressure to transform ourselves overnight.
But Suzy Reading suggests a revolutionary approach: what if we made this January gentle?
“Please drop any self-fagellation,” Reading advises. “We are far more efective when we go gently, taking a light-hearted approach.” The mother of two and author of The Self-Care Revolution understands the natural impulse to pause, refect and plan at the start of a new year. However, she notes that January - with its bleak weather, post-Christmas blues, and fnancial squeeze - is perhaps the toughest time to carve out meaningful change.
THE GOALS THAT WORK
5 KEY CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE GOALS: Intrinsic - anchored in what you want Authentic - aligned with your values
Positively framed - focus on what to start, not stop Harmonious - goals that complement each other Reasonable and fexible - accounting for your available resources
The problem with traditional New Year’s resolutions, Reading explains, lies in their sweeping nature. We often try to revolutionise multiple aspects of our lives simultaneously, while framing our goals negatively (we say we’ll “drink less wine” instead of getting excited about exploring alcohol-free alternatives). We fnd ourselves focusing on outcomes beyond our direct control.
“Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion,” Reading quotes Simon Sinek. Her research shows that while goal-setting does boost happiness and motivation, these goals need to be genuinely achievable and driven by personal purpose.

Berkhamsted’s pelvic health pioneers
Becky Aston is on a mission to empower clients at Berkhamsted’s specialist pelvic health physiotherapy clinic
Becky Aston knew from an early age that physiotherapy was her calling. After qualifying and working in London teaching hospitals, she discovered her true specialism: pelvic health. Now, from a peaceful setting in Ashlyns Hall, she leads Berkhamsted’s specialist pelvic health physiotherapy clinic, addressing conditions that afect one in four women and one in eight men.
“I completed a research fellow post studying the link between incontinence and depression,” Becky shares, describing her journey from a Bachelor’s degree to a Master’s degree in Research Methodology. “Learning happens with years of experience and a passion for what you do.”
––––
A TEAM OF SPECIALISTS
The clinic brings together three additional pelvic health physiotherapists, sharing over 45 years of clinical practice. “I am blessed to work alongside physiotherapists who are as passionate as I am about empowering women and men to improve their pelvic health,” says Becky. The team regularly trains together, sharing knowledge to enhance their service.
Working alongside a menopause specialist and Chinese acupuncturist, the clinic ofers comprehensive care. “We
have a much wider network of experts who are equally passionate about women’s and men’s health,” Becky notes. This collaborative approach helps clients achieve both health and personal goals. ––––
BREAKING THE TABOO
“Pelvic health remains a slightly taboo subject,” Becky explains. “It’s underresearched, under-reported and undertreated.” The clinic aims to counter society’s normalisation of incontinence, particularly evident in advertising for containment products.
Their approach is both empathetic and evidence-based. “People are often nervous about coming to see us, but we are the specialists and have heard all the things you might be embarrassed to talk about,” Becky reassures. “We provide evidencebased treatments that work.”
Services include support for stress management, pelvic health, and recovery following surgery. The team also supports women through pregnancy with back and pelvic pain management and birth preparation services.
INNOVATIVE TREATMENT
Hour-long initial consultations allow a thorough assessment and understanding of each client’s needs. The clinic employs various physiotherapeutic skills including muscle rehabilitation, biofeedback, muscle stimulation, acupuncture, and scarwork therapy.
“Through developing the clinic, we’ve been able to design the services exactly as we would like them, alongside the best research evidence available,” Becky explains. This freedom to prioritise quality care over time constraints has proven transformative for many clients.
A BERKHAMSTED BASE
The clinic’s location in Ashlyns Hall promises discretion, with parking directly outside. “We’re tucked away, because let’s face it, not everyone wants to be shouting about coming to see us,” Becky notes.
Berkhamsted itself was a natural choice for Becky and her husband when leaving London 13 years ago. “The array of shops, restaurants and activities with
all the wonderful countryside around is the perfect mix for us,” she shares. “We have met great friends and professionally, I have met a wonderful group of people who are part of the team that can support our clients beyond physiotherapy.”
The clinic’s success has made it a regional destination. “Every town should have pelvic health physiotherapy specialists, but sadly they don’t,” Becky refects. “Berkhamsted is lucky to have a business that’s passionate about helping people.”
Most importantly, Becky wants people to know there is help available. “It is never too late to address these issues,” she emphasises. “We aim to empower people to take control of their pelvic health.”

TOWN THE HIGHWAYMAN
We love The Highwayman for committing to source only the fnest and most sustainable meat from award-winning family butcher, Aubrey Allen. All roasts are served with caulifower cheese, veggies, Savoy cabbage, bottomless (!) roast potatoes, Yorkshires and gravy. Go for the oak-smoked outdoor bred pork ribeye, or beetroot and smoked cheddar parcel. Sign up to the newsletter to enjoy 50% of mains (when ordering two courses per person) from the à la carte menu or Specials board, until 8th February.

THE BULL
Ox cheek-flled Yorkshires, brioche stufed with roast chicken… this isn’t your usual Sunday lunch menu (clementine trife? Count us in). The traditional roast rump of beef is the showstopper, though
Seitan ‘beef’ in ciabatta is a must-try for vegans. Look out for a three-course Burns night special ofer on Thursday 23rd January, as well as Burns Specials on the 25th.
Served from 12pm - 5.30pm 10 High St, Berkhamsted, HP4 2BS 01442 767 440 Thebullberkhamsted.co.uk
THE
OLD MILL
Alongside leg of lamb, pork belly, ribeye, and cornfed chicken supreme roast options, The Old Mill’s vegan choice is anything but an afterthoughtthe mushroom and cashew Wellington could tempt the staunchest carnivore. Our tip? Go all-in with the sharing roast, served in a monster Yorkie (and like the rest of the roast options, drenched in proper gravy) for £33.95.
Served from 12pm - 10pm 15 London Rd, Berkhamsted, HP4 2NB 02033 436 874

COUNTRY
THE ALFORD ARMS
Find The Alford Arms in a secluded wooded valley on the edge of Ashridge Forest, near the Chiltern Hills. Staf are committed to providing great choices for anyone with specifc dietary requirements, making #FreeFrom fun again. Two roasts are available on a Sunday (common options are beef and pork), cooked throughout the day - but be warned, when they’re gone, they’re gone! The menu changes every two weeks, and you can count on elevated pub grub that’ll keep everyone happy. Think local pheasant and ham hock terrine with Alford piccalilli, and Roast Potten End squash, spinach and lentil roulade.
Our perfect Sunday looks like walking the Ridgeway National Trail, then sitting down at the Greyhound for a traditional roast. Sirloin of beef, half a roast chicken or slow-roasted pork belly are served with
roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables and most importantly, homemade Yorkies. We like the look of the larger plates too, like pan-fried seabass fllet on a chorizo fennel and white bean cassoulet, or Thai-spiced caulifower steak with a chickpea and coconut Curry.
Tucked away in a tiny hamlet between Bovingdon and Chesham, The White Hart was originally an 18th-century timber framed barn - now it serves up excellent sirloin, chicken and pork loin roasts with all the trimmings - and they’re available gluten-free. We’re particularly excited about the orange and cinnamon brûlée with a shortbread biscuit… and did somebody say cheeseboard?
Food served 12pm - 6pm Whelpley Hill, Chesham, HP5 3RL 01442 833 367 Hartonthehill.co.uk

Garden awakening
January is for planning your growing year while tending to winter tasks. Local forist Julie Woodford shares seasonal gardening tips
LOOK AHEAD
The start of a new year is a wonderful time to dream, plan, and prepare for a year of growing. Whether this is your frst time sowing seeds and discovering the magic of germinating your own plants, or you’re an experienced grower looking to try something new in your garden or allotment, there’s so much to look forward to in the months ahead.
FLOWER OF THE MONTH
Hellebores thrive beautifully in gardens around Berkhamsted, ofering delicate shades of pinks, greens, and whites that brighten the winter landscape. With few British fowers around at this time, a small bouquet or even a single hellebore stem in a bud vase can transform a space. They are also perfectly formed to foat in a bowl. While these beauties can be fnicky and prone to wilting especially if picked before they have set seed, proper conditioning is the key to a long vase life. Try this trick: sear the stems in boiling water for 10 seconds, then score them lengthwise with a sharp knife before placing them in water
- the cuts will callous over, storing water in the stem.
JANUARY GARDENING TASKS
1. Enjoy early fowers: Look out for the frst Snowdrops and early Narcissi.
2. Sow seeds: Start Sweet Peas – you can never have too many! Also, sow Cobea Scandens (Cup and Saucer Vine).
3. Dahlia care: Check stored Dahlia tubers to ensure they are dry and disease-free.
4. Winter fowering plants: Deadhead winter bedding plants like Violas and Pansies to encourage continued fowering.
5. Hellebores: Remove old, damaged leaves to prevent black spots and showcase their fowers.
6. Feed the birds: Keep feeders stocked to support wildlife.
7. Maintenance: Clean your tools and greenhouse, and knock heavy snow of branches to prevent damage.
8. Prepare perennials: Cut back ornamental grasses and perennials, shaping them for fresh spring growth.
Wishing you a successful start to the growing season!

Add to your plate, don’t take away!
New Year’s diet rebellion can easily set in as winter darkness lingers. Nutritionist and hormone specialist Hannah Alderson suggests foods to boost your mood and start 2025 positively – without restrictions
TRYPTOPHAN-RICH POULTRY
Sex hormones derive from fat, but several hormones, including mood-stabilising serotonin (your ‘happy’ transmitter), are synthesised from protein. Serotonin production begins with tryptophan, primarily in the gut. Include turkey and chicken weekly to stabilise your mood - try switching beef mince to turkey mince to increase your intake.
PREBIOTIC FOODS
These fbre-rich components nourish gut bacteria, supporting serotonin production and mental well-being. Include daily: artichokes, asparagus, leafy greens, cooked and cooled potatoes, onions, leeks, garlic, tomatoes, apples, avocados, green bananas, berries, seaweed, beans, and legumes.
WINTER TIP: add chia seeds to porridge for fbre and blood sugar regulation.
FERMENTED FOODS
While prebiotic foods nourish your gut
bacteria, probiotics can deliver fresh bacteria to your gut microbiome to support diversity. Aim for 3-4 weekly portions of probiotics to support gut diversity: live yoghurt, kefr, kimchi, tempeh, miso, or sauerkraut. Research links gut diversity to reduced anxiety and depression rates.
OMEGA-3 RICH FISH
Essential for reducing infammation and supporting brain health, low omega-3 levels correlate with depression and anxiety. Target three portions weekly of oily fsh - try UK freshwater trout as a sustainable alternative to salmon, rated as a Best Choice by the Marine Conservation Society.
MAGNESIUM SOURCES
This calming mineral supports hormone balance, nervous system function, and sleep - a wonderful addition in winter. Find it in dark leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, and cacao powder. Try warming cacao with coconut milk instead of regular hot chocolate - it’s rich in mood-supporting favonoids, shown to reduce infammation and support brain health.
B-VITAMIN RICH LEGUMES
Aim for 3-4 weekly portions of beans and legumes - they support both gut health and mood-boosting neurotransmitter production. Add to soups, substitute for rice, or combine with roasted vegetables and watch an uptick in your energy and hormone balance.
Each of these food groups plays a crucial role in the gut-brain connection, helping optimise hormone production and support mental well-being during challenging winter months.

My Perfect Weekend
A peek into the weekends of Berkhamsted locals, from Friday cocktails to Sunday lie-ins. Designer Spencer Wilson shares his favourite cofee shops and local swimming spot
I SPECIALISE IN…
Illustration, sometimes design and occasionally printmaking. I work on illustrations for children's books and publications like New Scientist and The Guardian. I also create and sell artwork inspired by my passions, like cycling.
I’M FROM…
Hemel, born and bred. I moved to Berkhamsted after living in East London by the Beigel Bake with my now wife, who’s from Berkhamsted. It was an easy choice to settle here, good schools and close to shops, friends, and family.
BERKHAMSTED IS…
A small, friendly town surrounded by countryside, lovely pubs, good food, a fabulous cinema and all the cofee and cake you could wish for. The people are wonderful. I can walk almost everywhere, and I’ve loved the Chilterns for running and cycling.
FRIDAY…
I’m working on a kids' animated series, Maddie & Triggs, and Friday’s a half day. I’ll hit the gym, then grab dinner and a sourdough loaf from Nena for Saturday’s breakfast. We enjoy Lots of Rice or Verranda curry takeaway, but if dining out, ZaZa’s is a frm favourite.
SATURDAY…
Lazy cofee with eggs and sourdough, sometimes at Dower House, Fred & Ginger or Jester. Nothing beats a sausage sandwich from the baker. I’ll visit the Oxfam bookshop, then meet friends for pints at The Riser or The Bull, followed by curry to soak it all up.
SUNDAY…
A rare day free means gardening, allotment time, or cycling the roads in the surrounding area.
BERKO TRADITIONS…
We love the Kitchners Field freworks with local friends, homemade brownies, and a hip fask (adults only!). I’ve been known to get a studio team together for the Highway quiz, too.
GOOD TO KNOW…
I’ve worked with The Rotary Club and Lovelo cycling, designing posters, jerseys, and medals for events like the Half Marathon. It’s great supporting local charities and groups.
ONE LAST THING…
The Rex is a joy. I also swim at the Boys' School pool, loving the light through its big windows, and enjoy a sauna at ONE92 Fitness, workout optional!
