Gabriel John Rimando Publisher, The Global Filipino MagazineIn a city as vibrant and cosmopolitan as Dubai, many people are pursuing their dreams and making their mark. Among them is Ron Wilson A. Pena, a 30-year-old sales professional at Folkart Real Estate and Brokerage. With a mantra of “My challenges will bring a better me,” Ron has overcome personal and professional obstacles to find success in his chosen field.
Ron’s journey began with a tragedy. After his father’s passing in 2016, he felt the need to support his family financially and grow as an individual. Leaving the Philippines, he chose Dubai as his new home, drawn by its advanced and convenient lifestyle and the safety it offered.
Before settling into his current job at Folkart Real Estate, Ron gained experience in various industries. He worked as a barista at Figaro Coffee Shop, honed his sales skills at Subaru Motors, and even dabbled in buying and selling secondhand motorcycles, big bikes, and cars for three years.
Now, as an office-based sales
professional at Folkart Real Estate, Ron has found his passion.
“What I love about my job is that every day is a learning process, and I feel like I become a better individual each day,” he shared.
He attributes much of his success to the company’s supportive environment, where there’s no pressure or quotas and the office ambiance is peaceful.
Ron also appreciates the opportunities he’s had to meet and learn from influential people in his field. He credits the work-life balance in Dubai for helping him gain motivation, initiative, independence, maturity, and adaptability.
However, Ron’s journey has not been without its struggles. The first six months were challenging, as he missed his family and had to find the strength to carry on. The COVID-19 pandemic also brought financial difficulties, with months of delayed salaries. To make ends meet, Ron took on part-time work on weekends and started an online business selling
action figures and watches.
Despite these challenges, Ron has found happiness and fulfillment in Dubai. He married the love of his life in March and purchased their dream home in the Philippines, with plans to start a family next year. His future goals include saving money for the renovation of their newly bought house.
To fellow Filipinos struggling abroad, Ron offers these words of advice: “Always remember your goal, what brings you here. When you’re outside your comfort zone, it means you’re one step higher than your previous self, so embrace all the challenges in life. Try to enhance your skills and invest in yourself. If possible, try to save 10% to 20% of your salary.”
In the face of adversity, he has grown stronger, more skilled, and more adaptable, finding personal and professional success in Dubai’s real estate industry. As he continues to learn and grow, Ron serves as a shining example to others seeking to make their mark in the world.
From housekeeper to business owner: The inspiring journey of an OFW in Dubai
Romaar Guevarra, a 27-year-old entrepreneur and business owner of RosasPandan, has come a long way from his humble beginnings. Born and raised in a remote area in the Philippines surrounded by water, he had to leave his home at a young age to work as a housekeeper in the Philippines. Little did he know that the first step of his incredible journey would lead him to a life-changing experience overseas.
At the tender age of 19, Romaar decided to work abroad as a hotel housekeeper in the UAE. With no prior knowledge of the hotel industry and limited exposure to different cultures, he found it challenging to adapt to his new environment. However, his determination to make a better life for himself and his family back home kept him pushing forward.
Romaar’s decision to work abroad was fueled by the difficult life his family experienced in their hometown. He saw firsthand the hardships they faced, sometimes having nothing at all. This drove him to seek a better future, even if it meant leaving his loved ones behind.
His journey overseas wasn’t easy either. Romaar tried his hand at various jobs, such as working on a fish farm and as a housekeeper in the Philippines. Eventually, he landed in the UAE, where he continued his housekeeping job, working tirelessly to clean 30 to 40 rooms daily for a monthly salary of AED750. After completing his contract, he went on to become a sales manager for a logistics company in Dubai, a position he held for three years. This role allowed him to learn valuable skills, such as communicating with highlevel professionals.
Throughout his nine years abroad, Romaar gained a newfound appreciation for life and a broader perspective on the world. He learned how to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and languages, ultimately becoming more independent.
The pandemic brought about a significant turning point in Romaar’s life. During the two years without work, he discovered his passion for entrepreneurship. Though starting a business was not easy, it granted him the time and financial freedom he sought. This led him to establish RosasPandan, a venture that brought him immense satisfaction and fulfillment.
Romaar’s experiences overseas have taught him the importance of resilience and perseverance. He faced numerous struggles along the way, both in the Philippines and abroad, but with faith in God and a strong sense of self, he managed to overcome each obstacle.
His future plans involve continuing his entrepreneurial endeavors, recognizing that overseas work is not a lifelong opportunity. Romaar believes that it is crucial for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to start investing in businesses early on, so they have a solid foundation when they return home.
Romaar offers valuable advice for fellow OFWs who might be struggling abroad. He urges them to remember their “why” – the reason they chose to work overseas – and to stay strong through the challenges they face. Prayer, a positive mindset, and surrounding oneself with motivating people are key factors in overcoming hardships.
He also shares a message of hope for those who might feel lost in their journey, citing Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Romaar’s story serves as a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and determination in the face of adversity.
From dreamer to trailblazer: Kim Royce Mantua’s journey of fierceness and success
When Kim Royce Mantua, or KimiFierce, first set foot in the UAE, he had no intention of staying. It was only after he visited the Dubai Mall that he realized he belonged there. Ten years later, he’s making waves as a Production Coordinator at Boomtown Productions, having worked with Hollywood, Bollywood, and local influencers like Noor Stars, Chris Hemsworth, Pharrell Williams, and Penelope Cruz.
Kim’s journey started as an unexpected opportunity. He arrived in the UAE after his family gifted him a trip to the country to celebrate his graduation.
“I saw myself working here and achieving my dreams in the country,” he recalled.
Back in the Philippines, Kim was a volunteer with the Tugon Rescue organization, helping with relief operations during calamities.
Kim began his career in production when his aunt spoke to the owner of Boomtown Productions about a
possible position. With a degree in Psychology and no experience in production, Kim started as an admin assistant. But it wasn’t long before his passion for the industry took over, and he climbed the ranks to become a Production Coordinator.
“I really like dealing with different people. Especially here in Dubai, you will get along with other nationalities,” Kim shared.
“One thing I like about my job is it teaches me to adapt to different personalities and handle stress very well,” he added.
Some of his proudest projects include the “Abu Dhabi Tourism: The Untold Story” and “UAE National Anthem | The World Plays Expo 2020.”
His experience working overseas has made him stronger and more independent.
“The competition here in the UAE is really something I am looking forward to because it makes you eager to do more and know yourself more and what you can do,” Kim explained.
Despite his success, Kim faced some challenges, including being scammed while job hunting. But with the support of his family, he overcame these obstacles and persevered.
“I am thankful that I have a supportive and understanding family. Even on my rough times, they are the ones pushing me and inspiring me not only to work hard but also to be a great individual,” he added.
Kim has big plans for the future. He dreams of establishing a production house in the Philippines that mirrors the quality of Boomtown Productions. He also wants to use his social media presence to spread positivity and make a positive impact on people’s lives.
“I believe laughter will brighten up someone’s day. The ability to have a laugh at ourselves and our mistakes is a virtue,” he explains.
With a wealth of experience under his belt, Kim has some advice for fellow kabayans struggling abroad.
“Don’t let society tell you what to do. Be you! Trust the process and know that you have your own path and duration to achieve your goals,” he advised.
He also encourages people to love themselves, reassess their careers if they’re unhappy, and not settle for less in love.
“Dreams do always come true, just believe and work for it!” he further added.
His journey from dreamer to trailblazer is a testament to the power of passion, determination, and support from loved ones. With a fierce spirit and a heart full of dreams, there’s no doubt that Kim will continue to make waves in the production industry and beyond.
How one Filipina’s faith and resilience helped her succeed abroad
Camille Mahani Tagudin, a 30-year-old mother and wife, made the difficult decision to work abroad to provide a better life for her family.
She secured a job as a Receptionist/ Personal Assistant at HiPhone Telecom in Dubai, where she has been working for four years and is about to renew her third contract.
Her mantra in life is Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” which has helped her face various challenges she has encountered along the way.
Working as a PA has taught Camille many valuable lessons, from thinking outside the box to finding alternative solutions to problems.
“Working as a PA is a combination of fun and challenge,” Camille said.
“It is really challenging, but it is something so rewarding to see every result of your hard work,” she added.
When asked about her reason for
working abroad, Camille explained that her main motivation was her family. Back in the Philippines, she only earned a minimum wage, and finding a job without a degree was a challenge.
“I am thankful that BPO companies are giving opportunities to people like me,” she said.
Before coming to Dubai, Camille worked as a call center agent in the Philippines. She also did side jobs selling preloved clothes and reselling delicacies to her colleagues to earn extra income.
Despite the challenges she faced, Camille enjoys working overseas because it has given her a stable monthly income and has taught her valuable life lessons.
Camille faced many struggles before settling in Dubai. She struggled financially, emotionally, and spiritually, but she remained strong and didn’t have the courage to open up to her family.
Looking back on the past four years, she learned that these struggles were lessons that made her stronger and better.
“I think at some point in our lives, we tend to forget to be thankful sometimes because we are not considering the ‘small things’ as a blessing,” she said.
“I am grateful to those people who understood me during my toughest times. Those who comforted me, encouraged me, and never got tired of calling me just to make sure I am okay,” she further added.
Camille’s current goal is to bring her child to Dubai, which she has been manifesting for a long time.
She also advises her fellow kabayans who are struggling abroad to be vocal and open about their struggles. She reminds them that it’s okay to talk about their problems and that it’s important to keep their circle small and be with people who motivate them in life. Camille also advises kabayans to be mindful of their finances and to prioritize their own needs because, at the end of the day, they are the only ones who can take care of themselves abroad.
Aside from her job as a Receptionist/ Personal Assistant, Camille also started selling Ilocos (Batac) Empanada, a famous Filipino delicacy.
She makes the empanadas by hand, starting from making the dough, preparing the grated papaya and monggo, until forming it into a halfmoon shape without breaking it.
Camille invested her time and effort in making these empanadas, from sleepless nights to waking up early and non-stop rolling to finish hundreds of orders. “All the hard work is worth it,” she said.
Despite the challenges she faced, she remained strong and focused on her goals. Her positive outlook on life, combined with her strong faith, has helped her overcome various obstacles along the way.
Balancing work, life, and faith: An OFW’s pursuit of success and purpose in the
In a world where success is often measured by material wealth, OFW-turned-entrepreneur Joanah Pusta Mozo stands as a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and the pursuit of a meaningful legacy.
Joanah, a native of Titay, Zamboanga Sibugay, is a mechanical engineer who made a name for herself in the UAE as an executive in facilities management. Now, she is a successful entrepreneur, spiritual leader, and role model for her fellow OFWs.
Having worked in the corporate world for 20 years, Joanah eventually decided to establish her own business, offering general trading, events, and consultancy services, as well as training for professionals in the UAE.
“For the past decade in building up a career in UAE from MEP Fit-out Design to Facilities Management, I have developed a system in costing FM tender projects, and this has become the primary offer of my training facility,” she shared.
Working abroad was never a part of Joanah’s original plan, but when her husband received a job offer in the UAE, the opportunity presented itself.
“It just came unexpectedly in 2007 when my husband was hired to work with one of the big Facilities Management companies in UAE,” she recalled.
“Working abroad was just an abrupt decision when the processing of my husband’s paper was completed fast and smooth since we didn’t have any plan of working away from the Philippines,” she added.
Overcoming challenges in a foreign land and a multicultural work environment, Joanah found joy in working with diverse nationalities and learning about their cultures.
“It has given me a different perspective, a scenario of ‘thinking outside the box’, so I can blend and work with them in this place,” she said.
Despite her success, Joanah admits that time management has been her greatest struggle. Balancing her demanding business, family life, and other responsibilities require constant prioritization. Fortunately, Joanah’s supportive husband helps make the challenges bearable.
The couple also found solace in their faith, establishing a family church in Dubai called Jesus is Supreme Fellowship (JSF) to cater to the spiritual needs of their family and friends. Joanah serves as the Senior Administration Leader, overseeing the church’s programs.
As the current Vice PresidentExternal of the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers - UAE Chapter, Joanah is committed to serving her fellow Filipino professionals.
She was recently honored as one of the Top Engineers and Architects in the Middle East for 2023.
Looking towards the future, Joanah plans to return to the Philippines and invest in her community.
“Settling back and retiring in the Philippines have been our plan after working abroad as we did not envision migrating to other countries,” she said.
“Planting spiritual congregation and establishing businesses in our native place will be the priority coming home,” she added.
Joanah’s advice for fellow OFWs is to be wise, cautious, and faithful in all aspects of life. She encourages them to seek spiritual guidance, invest intelligently, and always remember the reasons why they chose to work abroad.
In reflecting on her journey, Joanah has come to appreciate the importance of balance in all areas of life, recognizing that without it, satisfaction and wholeness can never truly be achieved. Her story is an inspiring reminder of the power of resilience, faith, and determination in building a lasting legacy.
Bringing the taste of home to the UAE: The rise of Papolicious Cucina
For Chef Apol Nolasco, cooking has always been a part of her life. Growing up in a foodie family, she developed a passion for cooking at a young age. Her mother was her inspiration and taught her how to cook her first dish, Adobo. This ignited her love for cooking and eventually led her to pursue a career in the culinary industry.
In 2014, Chef Apol moved to the UAE and worked for different companies and restaurants. She started her own business, Sinangkutsa ni Cheffy, in August 2020 but had to close it down later that year to focus on her health. In December 2021, she opened Papolicious CucinaChili Garlic Bagoong, which quickly gained popularity among Filipinos in the UAE.
Papolicious Cucina is not an overnight success. Chef Apol started this business back in 2010 in Marikina City together with her friends. It was in 2012 when she decided to branch out in Recto, Manila with her cousins. Today, Papolicious Cucina dishes can be ordered through a food delivery app called The Oven Market (TOM), making it easy for Filipinos in the UAE to taste and enjoy their favorite Filipino comfort food.
Chef Apol’s passion for cooking
and her dedication to providing affordable and quality home-cooked Filipino food is what sets Papolicious Cucina apart. As she puts it, “hindi lahat ng masarap ay mahal” (not all delicious food is expensive). Her love for cooking is evident in the way she prepares and presents her dishes, using only the freshest and highest quality ingredients.
One of the struggles Chef Apol has endured is her health. She had to undergo two heart surgeries, one in 2018 and another in 2020. She was scared that she may not be able to do what she loves, which is cooking. However, with the help of God, her family in the UAE and the
Philippines, as well as her business partner who never left her side during those trying times, she was able to overcome it and continue sharing her love and passion for cooking.
For Chef Apol, working overseas has taught her the value of diversity and efficiency. She has worked with people from different countries and learned from them. She also appreciates the security and stability that the UAE provides.
When asked about her future plans, Chef Apol said she plans to continue what she has started and bring Papolicious Cucina to the Philippines eventually. She wants to share her passion and love for cooking with her kababayans (countrymen) all over the world.
For Filipinos who are struggling abroad, Chef Apol’s advice is to work hard, trust in the Lord, and believe in yourself. She also wants to take this opportunity to thank The Global Filipino Magazine for recognizing the hard work of Filipinos in the UAE and for being a source of courage, inspiration, and motivation to the community.
In the words of Chef Apol, “There’s no need to be perfect to inspire others. Let others get inspired by how you deal with your imperfections.” Her story is a testament to the power of passion, determination, and hard work.
How Dubai helped an OFW find her strength and purpose
Erniely Amorganda, a 36-year-old Finance Manager at Startstone DMCC in Dubai, has been working abroad for 8 years now.
Her determination and goal-driven attitude led her to pursue her career abroad and work for a high-paying job.
Erniely has been through various challenges before she landed her current job, including failing the CPA board exam on her first attempt, struggling with anxiety, and experiencing difficulties finding comfort as an OFW in Dubai.
However, she overcame those challenges and achieved her goals.
Erniely started her career in 2008 in an accounting firm in Makati, working in the accounting department.
During audit season, she helped the auditors with field work, even though she wasn’t a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) at that time.
Being around auditors made her realize that she needed to become a CPA for the sake of her credibility since they deal with clients.
She took the board exam again and passed it on her second attempt.
The road to passing the board exam was not easy for Erniely, as she was working full time in an actuarial firm in Makati while reviewing for the exam.
Juggling work and review caused her to develop anxiety, which affected her daily life. Nevertheless, she was victorious in the end and passed the board in 2012, and was even offered a job at Shell Business Center in Makati.
Embarking on a new journey in Dubai
Erniely left Shell in March 2015 to explore Dubai.
She encountered difficulties adjusting to her new environment, as most OFWs do during their first six to 12 months abroad.
She experienced sadness, loneliness, and the stress of finding comfort similar to what she was used to back home.
However, Dubai helped her overcome her anxiety and allowed her to be more mindful and stronger.
In May 2018, Erniely landed her current job as a Finance Manager at Startstone DMCC in Jumeira Lake Towers. She considers this her longest job and is grateful to have
it, as it offers a flexible working schedule, a good salary, a stress-free workplace, and a kind boss. Erniely is passionate about her job and enjoys the flexibility it offers to work from home.
Despite her busy work schedule, Erniely used to volunteer with Dubai Cares, participate in walk/run events for causes, and was part of PICPA Dubai as an officer in charge of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Currently, she devotes her time to growing her e-commerce business, selling skincare and cosmetics from the Philippines and Korea.
Erniely’s mantra in life is “Let Your Faith Be Bigger Than Your Fear.”
This positive outlook on life allowed her to overcome her challenges and achieve her goals. Her determination, resilience, and willingness to take risks are admirable and serve as an inspiration to others who want to pursue their dreams.
Breaking barriers: The inspiring journey of a hearing-impaired Filipino-Australian fashion designer
In a world filled with stereotypes and judgment, Frances Helena, a 32-year-old FilipinoAustralian hearing-impaired fashion designer, has proven that embracing diversity and creativity can lead to a successful and fulfilling career.
As the brains behind Beautifully Diverse Fashion, Helena’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of inclusivity.
Born in the Philippines, Helena’s family migrated to Australia when she was twelve. Her multicultural upbringing fueled her desire to work abroad and give back to the Filipino community.
“This motivated me to do something more with my life, and to give back to the Filipino community. To inspire the kids to be more in their life, and to really take a chance to see what is out there within the world,” she shared.
Her designs have been showcased in New York Fashion Week, and she has been invited to prestigious events like The Outstanding Filipino Awards (TOFA) in New York and Women Of Heart Awards (WOHA) in London. In addition, Helena has partnered with several international businesses and sponsors to support her brand’s global growth.
Helena emphasizes that her success is not solely about fashion; it’s about
supporting her team of models and photographers, giving them the recognition they deserve.
“What we do is more than just about fashion, it’s about being able to support our team of models and photographers. It’s about giving them the value and credibility that they deserve because without them we have no fashion show,” she added.
Working overseas has allowed Helena to explore her creativity and connect with Filipinos around the world. She appreciates the global Filipino community and its contributions to various creative industries.
“So being Filipino is a matter of pride for we are very well-rounded people in the creative industries,” Helena said.
Despite facing struggles as a migrant, Helena chose to educate others about her culture rather than engaging in
conflict. She found inspiration in her mother’s strength and work ethic, learning the importance of hard work and dedication.
Helena’s future plans include continuing to work overseas while advocating for various causes such as mothers in fashion, gun control, and disability awareness.
Her advice for fellow kabayans struggling abroad is to remember their roots and the supportive global Filipino community.
“Remember who you are, you are our kabayan, and a Pinoy,” she said.
As Helena continues to break barriers and inspire others, she encourages the support of fellow kabayans and their businesses.

From struggling immigrant to successful business owner in US
Jaycel Soliman Gripon, a 30-year-old Filipina entrepreneur, is the epitome of resilience and determination. From humble beginnings, she overcame adversity and hardship to build a thriving business in Houston, Texas, and inspire others to follow in her footsteps.
Today, Jaycel is the proud owner of Café Gripon’s NASA, Sra. Churros, and Sweet Cravings Churros and Crepes, three dessert and coffee shop locations that specialize in churros and crepes.
As a young single mother, Jaycel was driven by ambition and the need to provide for her child and family. This drive led her to work abroad, first as a machine operator in Taiwan, and later in the United States.
Jaycel’s journey to success was not an easy one. After a failed marriage, she found herself alone in a foreign country, forced to rely on the kindness of fellow Filipinas for shelter and support.
Jaycel did not let her circumstances define her. Instead, she worked tirelessly in various jobs, including babysitting, cleaning houses, cashiering, and even working as an Uber driver. These experiences, coupled with her determination and
resourcefulness, eventually led her to open her own business.
“I enjoy being my own boss because it gives me a sense of responsibility,” Jaycel said.
“I always wanted to learn and figure out more products. I enjoyed taking pictures of new products and posting them. I love the idea of meeting new people, the customers and especially employees. Most of my employees are my siblings, and I found that as my biggest blessing,” she added.
Working overseas has also given Jaycel a sense of pride in her Filipino heritage.
“It really feels good when you are from a third world country and you excel on foreign ground,” she said.
“It really feels good when you gain that respect,” she further added.
Jaycel credits her success to the support and guidance of her mentor, a business partner who recognized her potential and taught her how to run a business.
Now, with her siblings by her side, Jaycel is focused on expanding her business and giving back to her community.
“I want to open more businesses,
more branches, and expansions. I’m planning for the 4th location, and if ever God’s prevail, I want to do it before this year ends. With that, I want to help some fellow Filipinos get the chance to work here. I want to hire people from the Philippines and show the world how great Filipinos are,” she said.
Her advice to fellow Filipinos struggling abroad is to “keep your head high, trust the Lord, and believe in yourself. Whatever you are going through, just believe that someone is watching over you. Everything will get better.”
She also emphasizes the importance of patience and trust in the process, saying, “When it comes to love, finances, or employment, don’t rush. Work on yourself and trust the process. Everything will fall into its places once you are ready.”
For Jaycel, the love and support of her family have been instrumental in her journey. She encourages young people to cherish their relationships with their parents, explaining that “we cannot be a good citizen, employee, a friend, or even a lover if we are not a good daughter/ son to our parents first. Believe me, God will bless you if you love your parents.”
