Climbing the ladder to success: OFW shares journey from restaurant waitress to operations manager
OFW in Qatar turns living space into a green oasis with indoor hydroponics
In the heart of the Qatari desert, where arable land is scant and water even scarcer, an OFW has turned his living room and kitchen into a veritable oasis brimming with lush greenery and fresh vegetables.
It is here, amidst the arid environment of Qatar, that Jeacim Francis Adaya, a senior accountant in one of the leading automobile companies in the state of Qatar, has cultivated not only a thriving indoor hydroponics garden but also a community of enthusiasts, eager to learn the benefits of soil-less farming.
“I stumbled upon a captivating video on YouTube about hydroponics,” shares Adaya with The Global Filipino Magazine, recounting how the journey began in
2020, a time when everyone sought avenues to stay occupied amidst the global pandemic.
It was a pathway into a productive family activity that initially faced setbacks but spurred him to delve deeper and gather knowledge from fellow gardeners in Qatar and the Philippines.
A second attempt, blossoming around September 2022, now thrives with the harmonious convergence of family involvement and an unremitting spirit of learning.
“My hydroponics journey has changed my life,” Adaya reflects.
“It gave me a better view of home gardening experience – that it is possible even with a very limited space, but with the right amount of knowledge, passion, and persistence, it could meet sustainability goals.”
The soil-less cultivation under LED lights has brought forth a lush variety of vegetables including varieties of lettuce, Pechay, Pak Choi, and Kangkong.
These plants find their home in a setup that not only affords a controlled
environment but adds an aesthetic value to the living space with living and breathing walls.
Adaya mentions, “The limitations of the weather here in Qatar is also an added reason [to choose indoor hydroponics], since plants are unable to grow under high temperature and humidity, unlike being in a much more controlled environment, it gives them the ability to germinate well and grow healthier.”
Not confined to just the indoor setup, Adaya expands his hydroponics venture seasonally, utilizing the cooler Qatari winter months from October to April for outdoor hydroponics farming. This allows him to leverage the favorable climatic conditions, introducing a diverse range of crops and further enhancing his hydroponics exploration.
What began as a family project has transcended into a community endeavor. Through the distribution of home-grown vegetables and hydroponics workshops, Adaya has fostered a culture of awareness and environmental sustainability in Qatar.
“Our home-grown vegetables are mainly for family and community consumption,” Adaya says, highlighting the joy and satisfaction derived from sharing the harvest with friends and workshop participants.
Moreover, the process of nurturing plants has offered a wealth of psychological benefits. Adaya feels that interaction with nature, especially for his children, fosters a deeper understanding of life and nature.
Adaya shares words of encouragement for others keen on embarking on their hydroponics journey in Qatar.
With “Success is the result of preparation meeting opportunities” as his mantra, he advocates perseverance and a readiness to learn from setbacks.
Through workshops and training sessions, he extends his expertise to a growing community, inviting more individuals to start their hydroponics journey.
“It gives me confidence that together, we can achieve our goals in advancing innovative approaches to environmental awareness and sustainability solutions,” Adaya conveys with a spirit of togetherness and community growth.

Rechel in Dubai: Illuminating the realities of OFW life and celebrating multicultural gastronomy
Dubbed as “Rechel in Dubai,” Rechel Hoco, a 22-year-old event staff at an events and creative company in Dubai, has been weaving her dreams and crafting her path with joy and fervor. Having arrived in Dubai in December 2022, Rechel initially faced the challenges many newcomers encounter, including securing the right job.
Her journey began with a position as a restaurant staff around Jumeirah Port but soon transitioned into an event role, which she found to be more suitable and aligned with her experiences.
Rechel’s mantra, “I create my own path and walk it with joy,” is palpably evident in her daily life.
Not just confined to her day job, Rechel delves into the worlds of modeling, brand ambassadorship, and vlogging during her off-hours. Her content creation journey kicked off in 2019 in the Philippines when she was crowned Miss Oriental Mindoro, opening doors to vlogging on platforms like YouTube and Facebook.
However, the journey was not always smooth. The passing of her father in 2021 led Rechel to halt her passions, including vlogging, to focus on family. It was not until she set foot in her dream country, the UAE, in December 2022, that she reignited her vlogging career. A simple video playing Lato Lato (clackers) catapulted her back into the spotlight, gaining 1 million views in 24 hours,
and reigniting her passion for content creation.
With the resurgence of her vlogging career in July 2023, Rechel introduced an online series, “Tara, Kain Tayo!” on Facebook, showcasing the diverse cuisines available in Dubai. From Arabic to Indian, Pakistani, and Iraqi, Rechel aims to give a taste of every nation’s cuisine present in the UAE, offering a glimpse into the gastronomic experiences of OFWs in the Middle East.
Her passion for vlogging and content creation extends beyond culinary adventures. Rechel’s advocacy focuses on addressing misconceptions about being an OFW. She aims to shed light on the realities OFWs face, emphasizing that while Dubai offers myriad opportunities, life as a worker in a foreign land still entails responsibilities and challenges.
The highlight of her OFW life in Dubai has been the opportunity to showcase her personality, tell stories about Dubai, and inspire others to dream big and take risks.
from a desire for a fresh start and to be reunited with her brother, who she hadn’t seen in four years. Rechel faced struggles and endured hardships, but her positive attitude and the support of her brother helped her overcome them.
Dubai, for Rechel, is the “land of opportunity,” offering accessibility and a welcoming environment for expats.
Despite being a relatively new OFW, Rechel offers advice to her fellow kabayans, “Being an OFW is hard, we are away from our loved ones, and we miss them every day. Always look for a positive attitude every day, happiness is contagious. Do anything with love and passion; it will bloom and grow naturally.”
Looking ahead, Rechel harbors dreams of representing the Filipino Community in a National Pageant in the Philippines. With her resilience, passion, and joyous spirit, Rechel Hoco continues to create her path, inspiring many along the way.
“The feeling of someone telling you they are watching your vlogs and seeing them happy makes me so kilig! Working with brands, attending events, and being invited to fancy restaurants was something I did not imagine when I was planning to go to the UAE,” Rachel shares.
The decision to work abroad stemmed
From skylines to sand dunes: An OFW’s voyage of self-discovery and professional flourishing
From the bustling markets of Hong Kong to the luxurious landscapes of Dubai, Mherck Dela Cruz’s journey epitomizes resilience, passion, and a relentless pursuit of personal and professional growth. A seasoned social media manager at ME Dubai by Melia, Mherck shares his experiences, the challenges he overcame, and his aspirations for the future.
Mherck currently spearheads social media strategies at the architectural gem in the heart of the Burj Khalifa district, designed by the late Dame Zaha Hadid.
The Opus by Omniyat building, the only hotel project where she has personally designed the interiors and exteriors,” Mherck shared with The Global Filipino Magazine, reflecting on the significance of his workplace.
His role involves crafting engaging content, designing graphics, and managing various aspects of the hotel’s online presence.
“The highlight of my career undoubtedly lies in the realm of creativity,” Mherck confided, adding that enhancing the brand’s online presence through
captivating visuals and compelling campaigns has been “immensely fulfilling.”
The OFW’s odyssey began two decades ago, relocating abroad at the tender age of five, only to return to the Philippines to pursue higher education. The pull to return to Hong Kong was irresistible, as it was a place where his life seemed to resonate.
“Interestingly, amidst the challenges posed by the global pandemic, a remarkable opportunity arose for me to relocate once again, this time to Dubai,” Mherck disclosed, viewing it as a chance to embrace a new culture, environment, and professional landscape.
The primary motivation behind this global journey was familial bonds. Mherck expressed, “The prospect of reuniting with my mother, who has been based in Hong Kong even before my birth, was a compelling factor in my choice.”
This desire, however, evolved into a journey of self-discovery, cultural exploration, and professional advancement.
The transition wasn’t without its challenges. Leaving his family in Hong
Kong, navigating cultural differences, and establishing trust in a new environment were hurdles Mherck had to overcome.
“The feeling of homesickness was undeniable,” he admitted, relying on the support of friends and family to pull through.
Through determination and a willingness to engage with the local culture, Mherck discovered the warmth and hospitality of Dubai, turning it from an unfamiliar territory into a second home.
Mherck’s diverse professional journey started in finance, transitioned into hospitality, and later delved into public relations and marketing in Hong Kong’s vibrant nightclub scene.
“Interacting with personalities like Ciara, Bruno Mars, Sean Kingston, and many others has been a remarkable highlight,” he reminisced.
Embarking on a journey of creativity and cultural exploration
Mherck’s passion for creativity and digital platforms fueled his decision to venture into social media and marketing.
“It’s not just a job for me; it’s a vocation that ignites my enthusiasm and fuels my drive to excel,” he stated.
The dynamism of the field, the balance between creativity and cultural awareness, and the opportunity for continuous learning keep him invigorated.
Working overseas has been a transformative journey for Mherck. From Hong Kong’s fast-paced lifestyle to Dubai’s commitment to innovation and tradition, each city has enriched his perspective and provided a platform for evolution.
“Both Hong Kong and Dubai are gateways to diverse landscapes, allowing me to venture beyond borders and immerse myself in new cultures, languages, and traditions,” he reflected.
Looking ahead, Mherck aspires to explore various countries and cultures.
“Experiencing different lifestyles, meeting new people, and immersing myself in diverse environments excites me,” he shared.
While he may not have specific advocacies at the moment, contributing positively to the community through various initiatives remains a priority.
Johnny Biryani of TAG
91.1 reveals the secrets behind his success and community impact
with Kenneth’s voice as he embraced the role of a radio presenter at TAG 91.1, a Filipino radio station in the city. Co-hosting the lively “Tag Pack Up Na” with Maria Maldita, Kenneth discovered a platform to connect, inspire, and entertain the Filipino community with a medley of trending stories, music, and engaging banter.
Reflecting on the community interactions and roadshows, he shares, “It brings me a sense of joy and fulfillment to see firsthand how we were able to inspire and impact many Filipinos in the UAE.”
Kenneth’s symphony was composed of crescendos of challenges and diminuendos of resilience. Visa complexities, professional conflicts, and moments of uncertainty marked the staccato beats of his journey. With the unwavering support of his mother and newfound opportunities, Kenneth composed a resilient comeback.
He reflects, “After a month of uncertainty, I was able to bounce back…”, showcasing his steadfast resolve.
When the strains of a selfproclaimed “goal-digger” echo through the sands of Dubai, they harmonize to form the melody of Kenneth Aglubo’s journey. More familiarly known as Johnny Biryani of TAG 91.1, Kenneth orchestrates a symphony of pursuits that blend his varied passions for music, photography, community, and individual empowerment.
Kenneth’s overture commenced in 2015, when he traded the verdant landscapes of the Philippines for the golden sands of Dubai, stepping into the arena of international opportunities.
Driven by an adventurous spirit, he ventured, “I’ve always wanted to explore something new and do things I used to fear and hate.”
This bold transposition set the stage for his diverse professional suite in the UAE, beginning as a photographer and sales associate for an events management company.
The photographic lens brought him faceto-face with renowned personalities like golfer Henrik Stenson and boxing sensation Floyd Mayweather Jr., encapsulating their moments in frames of memory. His quest for diversity steered him to freelance engagements with Al Thaki Studio, exploring the picturesque charm of dhow cruises in Creek, Dubai through photography and sales.
In 2018, the airwaves of Dubai resonated
This tenacity became the bassline for his passion for creating impactful content and connecting with his audience. Kenneth’s initiative and dedication have been instrumental in orchestrating viral content on TAG 91.1’s social media platforms and conducting trendsetting interviews.
He emphasizes his commitment, stating, “I’m very particular with the impact and results. That’s how passionate I am.”
The diverse cityscape of Dubai has offered Kenneth the independence and myriad opportunities he sought since his college days. He expresses his affection for the city, saying, “I love working in Dubai because I feel safe here. Also, you get lots of opportunities everywhere!”
With plans of continuing his symphony in Dubai for the next three decades, Kenneth aspires to be a beacon of inspiration and support for others.
His journey also resounds with the harmonious notes of theater, reflecting his time with “Tanghalang SLU”.
The accolades and experiences gained there have been integral to his development, contributing to his multifaceted persona.
Kenneth’s melody is not just a personal anthem but also a composition of hope and wisdom for his fellow kababayans.
He resonates with the words of Dr. Bhawna Gautam, sharing, “Sometimes you go through a rough patch so that you learn to balance before walking the hardest path.”
He encourages maintaining hope and learning through the arduous segments of life’s composition, preparing for the significant movements that lie ahead.
Marion Joseph Tuangco, a dynamic 37-year-old, has donned the role of Managing Director at Reliance Global Human Resources Consultancies Co. L.L.C. with finesse, marking a significant chapter in his six-year journey abroad. His voyage, which began as a Business Executive in a training company, has seen him evolve into a symbol of aspiration, facilitating avenues for individuals to migrate to the UK as senior carers and/ or nurses, thereby weaving dreams with opportunities.
Reflecting on his diverse career spectrum, Marion reveals his entrepreneurial stint in the Philippines, where he not only owned a Call Center Company but also played a pivotal role in the operations of Google Asia Pacific.
The driving force behind his decision to venture overseas was a compelling desire to “enhance [his] skills” and to discover uncharted territories of personal and professional growth.
For Marion, the essence of his work transcends the confines of a job role; it’s about “connecting with people, living their lives by listening to their stories, and finding a purpose through helping them achieve it.”
Marion’s appreciation for the endless opportunities that accompany an overseas life is palpable.
He asserts, “You’re only limited by your vision, by your drive and confidence.” The allure of diverse and “intoxicating” cultures, coupled with the vastness of global landscapes, has enriched his perspective, enabling him to carve a niche amidst the myriad of people populating the world.
Facing struggles head-on: Overcoming challenges with faith and purpose
Navigating through unfamiliar territories, Marion encountered the inherent challenges of establishing new connections, fostering friendships, and assimilating into an alien culture. However, armed with unwavering faith, a supportive network comprising his church and family, and a steadfast belief in the power of envisioning, he emerged victorious in his battles.
Living by the mantra, “Do the right thing and nothing wrong will come out of it,” Marion exemplifies a life of integrity and conscientiousness. This guiding principle serves as his compass in every facet of life, be it love, business, or interpersonal relations. He counsels his fellow kabayans to uphold righteousness,
emphasizing that adherence to morality ensures peace of mind and mitigates the fear of retribution.
As Marion peers into the future, he harbors aspirations of inaugurating a purpose-driven training center. His vision encompasses a harmonious amalgamation of profitability and philanthropy, aiming to “give opportunities to people who are very much capable and willing but are just having hard times in life.”
Visionary insights: Charting a course of altruism and integrity
Interestingly, Marion confesses, “I never wanted to become an OFW. I never dreamt of leaving the country.”
His initial vision was entrenched in building a career in the Philippines. However, the serendipity of opportunity altered his trajectory, introducing him to the enchanting diversity and boundless prospects of the world. Marion leveraged this revelation to his advantage, assessing his place and purpose in the global tapestry.
He extends sagacious advice, urging everyone to “see it for what it is. Assess, and then move.”
This encapsulates the essence of adaptability and lifelong learning, reinforcing the significance of embracing change and pursuing continuous selfdevelopment.
From selling in the market to scaling the corporate world
Life is a series of decisions and transitions, some more challenging than others. But as Clarice Mae Suarez, a Sales and Marketing Executive at Corporate Group Company, states, “We may get tired, but we don’t stop for we will reap the blessings and result of our good work if we don’t easily give up and get discouraged.”
Clarice’s journey started long before her
role in the corporate world. At the age of 22, fresh with dreams and ambition, she began her overseas career with a supplier/manufacturer of PPE items. Starting in customer service, she faced the myriad challenges of multicultural diversity and high management expectations. With diligence and faith, she rose through the ranks, going from Senior to Accounts Receivable.
“I learned a lot of things, managed pressure while maintaining diligence in work,” she tells The Global Filipino Magazine.
And her efforts didn’t go unnoticed. In recognition of her contributions, she was promoted with a salary increase and awarded a certificate of achievement.
However, Clarice wasn’t just driven by career aspirations. Her heart carried a deeper motivation.
“The reason I opted to work abroad was to help my sister finish college. By God’s grace, I made it through. She graduated BSBA major in Finance Management. This is my greatest achievement in life,” she reveals with pride.
While her current role allows her the joy of communication, hitting sales targets, and enjoying company perks such as team-building activities, Clarice also values the personal growth she’s achieved from working overseas.
“It makes me grow, mature, and opens a door of opportunity to study in other countries,” she shares.
However, her path to success wasn’t devoid of challenges. Clarice recalls the hardships her family endured in the
Philippines, from sleeping in markets to her father’s strenuous job as a laborer.
“Life is not always fair,” she muses.
Still, with faith and determination, she graduated from Ateneo de Cagayan with a BSBA degree.
“During these times, I just looked up to my parents and especially to God, who will never fail us when we have faith,” she asserts.
Clarice’s future holds dreams beyond her corporate role. She envisions traveling, establishing a family-run cafe business, and helping the less fortunate.
“I want to help people, especially those who don’t have food to eat. I can help and encourage them through inspiring words,” she shares, revealing her deep sense of purpose.
Moreover, Clarice dreams of pursuing a Master’s degree, continuing to grow and learn.
For her fellow Filipinos struggling abroad, Clarice’s advice is rooted in faith and resilience.
“Dream and take steps towards that dream for yourselves and family. Always include God in your life and plans, and it will never fail,” she advises.
Further, she stresses the importance of celebrating small victories and trusting in God’s timing.
She encourages them to save and invest wisely, hinting at real estate and insurance as viable options.
A rising star painting the world with her harmonious canvas of music and passion
In the heart of Olongapo City, a beacon of talent, ambition, and unwavering determination emerged on June 6, 2007, as Joice Espinoza took her first breath.
From a tender age, Joice manifested a deep-seated connection to the performing arts, a journey tenderly nurtured in the nurturing halls of Columban College Inc., under the watchful eye of mentor John Rey Malto. There, even as a diligent student, her true nature as a natural performer unfurled.
Joice’s initial foray into the spotlight was not a deliberate pursuit of fame but a joyous exploration of her innate talents.
She graced various stages, her vibrant spirit engaging audiences as she fearlessly competed in singing competitions and beauty pageants.
Throughout her journey, the stage transformed from a place of competition to a sanctuary where she forged intimate connections with her audiences, offering a vibrant display of joy and artistic expression.
At the cornerstone of her budding career remains her supportive family unit, with her mother playing a pivotal role as both a discoverer and nurturer of Joice’s gift.
Her parents’ mantra of time management became a vital tool, allowing her to sail smoothly through the demanding world of showbiz, guided by resilience and an eagerness to grow.
As Joice embraced the path of a singer, she recognized the therapeutic potency residing in music, envisioning her artistry as a conduit to foster unity, empathy, and healing.
Moreover, she embraced the challenge of acting, showcasing a keen readiness to venture into uncharted territories and bring characters to life with an authentic touch. Yet, singing remained her beacon, the art form that facilitated the deepest connections with others, enabling her to share not only her talents but her soul’s harmony.
Behind the scenes, amid the frenetic pace of her emerging career, Joice found her sanctuary in the company of keyboard piano and guitar. Through playful interactions with these instruments, she nurtured her creativity, shaping her musical narratives while finding solace in her own private oasis of melody and rhythm.
Despite her meteoric rise, Joice experienced trials, notably feeling adrift during the pandemic. Yet, adversity fostered resilience, teaching her the value of self-belief, fortitude, and the transformative power of viewing criticism as a catalyst for growth.
In the face of obstacles, her spirit remained unyielding, as she ardently held onto her dreams, encouraging others to do the same.
Remarkably, the journey does not end with her conquests in the entertainment sphere.
An affection for animals harbored in her heart whispers of a future in veterinary science, a parallel aspiration that underscores her multi-faceted nature, as she dedicates herself to the pursuit of academic excellence in the STEM field.
Filipino senior hand and occupational therapist defines success through healing and education
Meet Blair Agero, a 45-year-old Senior Hand & Occupational Therapist currently shaping lives at Mediclinic Parkview in Dubai. With a mantra as empowering as “I am my thoughts. I create my reality,” he reflects on his enriching journey spanning 24 years in the field and 16 transformative years abroad.
Blair’s academic endeavors led him to earn an undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of Perpetual Help System in Manila, Philippines (1999), followed by post-graduate specializations in Hand Therapy from the University of Derbyshire in the United Kingdom (2014) and the Universidad Internacional de Andalucia in Spain (2022).
He recalls how, in February 2007, he embraced the unknown, leaving his roles as an Occupational Therapy Supervisor in Quezon City and a Freelance Features Writer for The Manila Bulletin to venture into Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
“I came to the country upon the invitation and sponsorship of my close friend Jelene Bihis-Sumallo,” shares Blair with The Global Filipino Magazine, expressing gratitude for the support that helped him establish his footing in the UAE.
Overcoming challenges and savoring success
Blair’s journey was not devoid of challenges. After initially working as a Marketing Assistant in a Real Estate Property company in Dubai, he transitioned into Occupational Therapy, continuously advancing his career and acquiring specialized skills through international training.
“It was my creative skills that kept me afloat for a few months before my efforts to secure a post as an Occupational Therapist bore fruit in August 2007,” he narrates.
One of the most significant highlights of his career was presenting an e-poster at the 11th Triennial International Federation of Societies for Hand Therapy Congress in Berlin, Germany.
“For my work on ‘The Therapeutic Management of Athletes with post-TFCC Repair’ to be selected among the hundreds of abstracts that were submitted from all over the globe is indeed an honor,” Blair proudly mentions.
His decision to work abroad was fueled by a desire to improve his financial position, support his pursuit of further education, and aid his aging grandmother.
“Working in Dubai allowed me to do both without the need to have two jobs,” he explains.
Blair’s passion for Hand Therapy has significantly contributed to its recognition and development in the UAE. Representing the UAE in the International Federation of Societies for Hand Therapy (IFSHT) since 2012, he has been instrumental in increasing awareness about the specialized practice.
“What I find most satisfying in my practice is helping people, including professional athletes, recover their hand function after surgery or injury,” he says.
Blair enjoys the cultural diversity and rich tapestry of experiences that working overseas offers.
“Interactions with my patients are like reading a short and immersive story,” he muses, finding joy in every unique interaction adding depth to his personal experiences.
Facing challenges, Blair found strength in his friendships and persevered through trying times, especially when dealing with delayed compensation.
“I relied on the assistance of my close friend Jelene and a couple of other friends I met here in Dubai,” he confesses.
Looking towards the future, Blair aspires to become a visiting professor in the Philippines and contribute to children’s education. He passionately shares, “It is my belief that basic education, to learn how to read, write, do arithmetic and learning how to reason are basic human rights.”
Blair leaves some thoughtful advice for his fellow kabayans, emphasizing clarity of goals, strategic planning, selfinvestment, and gratitude.
“All great things, big and small, take time. And once you do get it, celebrate, and give thanks,” he encourages.

Life abroad has been a rich tapestry of self-discovery, cultural immersion, and memorable encounters for Revilla.
“Working overseas offers unique experiences and opportunities that I find enriching and transformative. It’s a journey of self-discovery, cultural immersion, and the creation of lasting memories that shape my career and worldview,” Revilla notes, emphasizing the deep understanding and open-mindedness fostered through interactions with diverse perspectives.
However, the path was not devoid of challenges. From grappling with homesickness to overcoming language barriers, Revilla faced numerous hurdles. It was the unyielding determination and the guidance from mentors and colleagues who had navigated similar paths that saw him through trying times.
“Each battle I faced became a stepping stone in my journey towards settling and thriving in a new environment, ultimately shaping me into a more adaptable and resilient individual,” he reflects.
Beyond professional obligations, he dedicated time to community enhancement initiatives through the Guardian’s Brotherhood organization. His commitment to environmental sustainability has been a guiding light in recent undertakings, speaking volumes about his altruistic spirit.
As Revilla envisages the future, he aspires to leverage his rich experiences to contribute meaningfully to the Philippines’ progress. Keen on fostering safety consciousness and skill development in the country’s construction and oil sectors, Revilla contemplates collaborations with local organizations and government bodies.
Further nurturing his passion for
environmental sustainability, he intends to spearhead advocacy projects to promote eco-friendliness and cleaner urban spaces in collaboration with local communities and organizations.
Revilla shares, “Collaborating with local communities and organizations, I aspire to drive positive change through initiatives that align with these values.”
To his fellow kabayans weathering challenges abroad, Revilla extends heartfelt advice drawn from personal experiences. Stressing the importance of community and financial prudence, he encourages others to reach out to fellow Filipinos for support and manage finances wisely. On the professional front, he advocates for continuous learning and adaptability to stand out in the competitive job market.
Revilla accentuates the significance of self-care, urging individuals to find joy in hobbies and stay connected with loved ones.
“Draw strength from your roots and your innate capacity to overcome challenges. Each struggle is an opportunity for growth, and with determination and the support of your kabayan community, you can navigate these hurdles and emerge stronger and more empowered than before,” Revilla shares, encapsulating the indomitable spirit of the Filipino community abroad.
As the interview winds down, Revilla brings to fore the quintessential virtues of cultural sensitivity and open-mindedness when living abroad. He insists on the importance of understanding and respecting the norms, values, and practices of different cultures for smooth integration and fostering meaningful relationships.
“Learning about local traditions, customs, and social etiquette demonstrates respect and facilitates better communication and collaboration,” he notes, advocating for a learning spirit ready to absorb the richness offered by diverse cultures.
Climbing the ladder to success: OFW shares journey from restaurant waitress to operations manager
In 2013, with dreams in her eyes and determination in her stride, Joan Romualdo Vargas, a unit manager in real estate from Davao City, Philippines, stepped onto the soils of the UAE. Armed with an unwavering spirit and the mantra, “always think positive,” she embarked on a journey with Chinese Star Restaurant LLC that would see her grow from a waitress to an operations manager at the company’s Deira Dubai branch.
Joan’s daily responsibilities are multifold – from overseeing operational activities, implementing processes, focusing on marketing and social media platforms, handling reservations and inquiries, to managing partnerships and sponsorships. Her role is pivotal in ensuring the smooth flow of the restaurant in collaboration with Mall Management.
Reflecting on her journey, Joan shares, “I am joyful and full of blessings working here at Chinese Star Restaurant for more than 10 years with the same owner and the same company. I’m very thankful to my bosses, Maam Jinxia Guo and Sir Jason Han, for believing in me, and for the support, trust, and love,” she shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.
The mutual trust and respect between Joan and her employers have been the bedrock of more than a decade of harmonious collaboration, marked by
shared victories and accomplishments.
Beyond her professional commitments, Joan is deeply intertwined with the Filipino community in the UAE. She is a proud co-founder, choreographer, and dancer of the United Filipino Culture and Arts (UFCA), a group dedicated to preserving and showcasing Filipino culture and arts. Through various community events in Dubai and beyond, Joan and UFCA have brought the vibrancy and richness of Filipino traditions to the fore, strengthening ties within the community.
Joan’s decision to work abroad was driven by a profound sense of responsibility and love for her family, particularly her son. The initial years were not without their share of struggles and sacrifices. The separation from her son was especially challenging, but Joan held onto her promise that they would be reunited. In 2018, her perseverance paid off, and she was reunited with her son, enabling her to guide him towards a brighter future.
Working in a foreign land opened up a myriad of opportunities for Joan.
