For Dr. Joseph Ryan L. Mabaquiao, being a general dentist is more than just a job. It is his passion, his life’s work, and his way of serving others. This 37-year-old dentist is currently working at Gomez Dental Clinic in Dubai, where he has been practicing since 2014.

Dr. Joseph Ryan has been a dentist for more than a decade, with experience both in the Philippines and the UAE. He started working as an associate dentist with his father in their family clinic after graduating from dental school. He also volunteered as a dentist, providing free dental services organized by local organizations and religious groups.

The decision to work abroad was driven by Dr. Joseph Ryan’s desire for growth, both as a person and as a dentist. He wanted to learn new things, improve his skills, and gain more knowledge. The opportunities for growth and

advancement in his field were also more abundant overseas.

Building trust between patients and dentists is a crucial aspect of Dr. Joseph Ryan’s work. He enjoys educating his patients about their dental needs, giving them hope that something can be done for every problem. Being honest with his patients and motivating them to be proactive with their oral health are essential aspects of his practice.

Working overseas has also presented its own set of challenges for Dr. Joseph Ryan. Building his practice from scratch was not easy, especially since he was working outside of the Philippines for the first time. However, he persevered, trusting the process and building trust with his patients, one step at a time.

Despite the challenges he has faced, Dr. Joseph Ryan remains focused on his goal of providing

quality dental care and service to his patients. He believes in putting service first before profit and is passionate about his work as a general dentist. He sees growth and opportunities in working overseas, but he plans to go back home and continue his practice in the Philippines someday.

For his kabayans who are struggling abroad, Dr. Joseph Ryan’s advice is to pray, trust the process, and choose oneself first. Learning to say no and finding the right people to trust are also crucial in navigating the challenges of working overseas.

Dr. Joseph Ryan L. Joseph Ryan’s life and work exemplify the importance of service and passion in one’s chosen field. His commitment to putting service first before profit, providing quality dental care and educating his patients about their dental needs, is an inspiration to all.

THE GLOBAL FILIPINOS THE STORY OF OUR SUCCESS

Warmel Charry Japitana

VOLUME 3 | ISSUE 10 | FEBRUARY 2023 16 THE GLOBAL FILIPINO MAGAZINE image

A Filipina marketing manager’s journey to success in Dubai

Warmel Charry

Japitana is a 29-yearold Filipina who has been working abroad for five years. She currently holds the position of Marketing Manager cum Social Media Analyst at Timeless Dubai Tourism and Travels and Booster Group of Companies in Dubai, UAE. Warmel’s success story serves as an inspiration to many Filipinos who aspire to work overseas.

Warmel’s journey started in 2017 when she was hired as a travel consultant. After four months of probationary period, she was promoted to Marketing Manager at Timeless Dubai Tourism and Travels. It was a challenging time for her because she had to set up the business in the market and expand their branches to other countries, such as Sudan and the Philippines. Additionally, she was assigned as Marketing cum Social Media Analyst for Booster Group of Companies.

As a marketing and social media

analyst, Warmel has had the opportunity to talk to and work with different business owners, CEOs, and chairmen of various companies in the UAE and other countries. She believes that in this field, one needs to “think out of the box,” as her chairman in Booster Group of Companies always tells them. Her job requires her to work almost 24/7, but she finds it fulfilling to know that she can support her son, her family, and help people in need, even during the pandemic.

Warmel’s decision to work abroad was driven by her adventurous spirit and goal-oriented mindset. She left the Philippines in 2017, the same year she gave birth to her son, to follow her husband abroad and provide a brighter future for their family. Leaving a five-monthold child was a difficult decision, but Warmel knew that sacrifices had to be made for the sake of her family’s future.

Before working abroad, Warmel had various jobs in the Philippines, including being a television talent or extra in ABS-CBN Corporation. She also became an accountant for an actor and a writer in ABS-CBN, joined different competitions and pageants, supported youth people, residents of their society, and different organizations in Taguig City, and worked as a sales and marketing associate for the family business, “Eisley Wezley Party Needs and Catering.”

As a Marketing cum Social Media Analyst, Warmel loves hearing positive feedback from clients and partners, knowing that she met their expectations. She enjoys seeing the fruit of her labor from the sleepless nights, fully loaded works, and hectic schedules.

Working overseas helped Warmel realize the significance of family, love, sacrifices, career, health, and time. Five years ago, they started working abroad, dreaming of having their own flat to rent, a car, and properties in the Philippines. She believes that nothing is impossible if you work hard for it

and ask the guidance of the Lord God.

Warmel faced many struggles before settling in Dubai, such as being pregnant with their son Chris Wezley, with her husband already in Dubai. It was a challenging time for her, but she overcame it through the support of her family and by looking up to her father, who was also an OFW/seafarer.

Warmel’s journey to success is a testament to the hard work, determination, and resilience of Filipinos. She continues to inspire others with her story, reminding them that they can achieve their dreams with perseverance and faith in the Lord.

“To all our kabayans abroad, don’t compare your life with others. You have your own time to shine. Let them be your inspiration. Never get tired because all your hard works will be paid off in God’s perfect time. Always remember this, “Trust in the LORD forever. -Isaiah 26:4”,” she said.

Michelle Enriquez Ilaw

From service crew to secretary: Michelle Ilaw’s journey of professional growth abroad

Michelle Enriquez Ilaw is a 43-year-old Filipino woman who has been working abroad for 23 years. She is currently working as a secretary and receptionist in the administrative department of 4homes FZCo. Her job involves handling scheduling, meetings, travel planning, and preparing correspondence, LPOs, deliveries, arranging applicant interviews, and reports. She is known for being a detail-oriented, wellorganized team player, never missing deadlines, and juggling multiple tasks at once. Michelle is passionate about improving the environment and hopes to take the next step in her career.

Michelle started working abroad when she was 20 years old in Brunei, where she worked as a service crew in a Chinese food chain before transferring to a 4-star hotel as a VIP Relation Officer. She handled VIP guests from various countries, delegates, businessmen, and others. She worked in Brunei for almost 7 years before moving to the UAE for a better career path.

One of the highlights of Michelle’s career is learning to come up with new ideas that improve things. She has worked on special projects, earned a new degree and certification while working

full-time, been complimented by her superior’s supervisor or co-workers, contributed to good customer service, and was able to start her home-based baking business while working full-time.

Michelle opted to work abroad because she wanted to help her family, develop her professional skills, experience personal growth, gain insights into other cultures, and travel and explore outside her comfort zone.

Before working abroad, Michelle used to work as an operator in call centers like beepers/pagers and PLDT in the Philippines. However, she was not mature enough to handle responsibilities and took things lightly. When her cousin offered her a job in Brunei, she grabbed the opportunity and worked there for several years.

Michelle enjoys working at 4homes as she has learned that it is never too late to learn and be at her best. The courage and support she has received from everyone drive her to keep herself busy exploring new ideas and knowledge, especially when it comes to baking.

Working abroad allows Michelle and thousands of Filipinos to earn attractive salaries to help their families in the Philippines. It also

gives her a great opportunity to learn about new cultures and gain work experience in different fields. She feels that her work experiences perfectly fit the scope of work required, making her the best candidate for her chosen career.

Michelle did not struggle much after moving abroad, but she encountered a few battles that broke her to pieces. However, she is a great believer in Allah and managed to pick herself up and continue her journey with the support of her family.

Michelle’s future plan is to open her bakery/coffee shop, where she can continue her passion for baking. She also plans to support her kids, nephews, and niece in following their dreams.

In conclusion, Michelle is an inspiring woman who has shown resilience, dedication, and passion for her work. Her experience working abroad has given her a broader perspective on life and a drive to continue learning and improving herself. Her story shows that with determination and hard work, anyone can achieve their goals and make a difference in their life and the lives of others.

THE GLOBAL FILIPINOS THE STORY OF OUR SUCCESS

Leslie Baptista

A Filipina’s Journey to Success in the UAE’s HR Industry

VOLUME 3 | ISSUE 10 | FEBRUARY 2023 22 THE GLOBAL FILIPINO MAGAZINE

Some things are so unexpected that no one is prepared for them. The case of Leslie Baptista, a Filipina professional based in Dubai, is much akin to this old adage.

While finishing her college degree in the Philippines, she was a working student. Leslie worked at fast-food chains, malls, and local government units before heading to Dubai in 2007 when she was only 22, married, and had a fouryear-old son.

When Leslie settled in the emirate, she worked as a photo editor at a photo studio. In the same year, she moved to the hospitality industry and began working as a receptionist in a hotel apartment, where she honed her skills and became a talented multitasker, able to manage multiple ongoing situations without breaking a sweat.

A year later, she thought it was time to climb the corporate ladder and be part of a higher-standard hotel in Dubai, specifically a fourstar deluxe hotel. Her role at the hotel varied from guest service agent to hotel apartment officer to executive secretary for more than six years.

Leslie witnessed her career grow year by year until, in 2014, she was offered the position of assistant manager for operations and human resources for a group of companies that operates a hotel and restaurant.

Her career flourished further when she became the head of the human resource department of a leading higher education institution in Dubai.

Because of her enthusiasm for her craft, she now works as the Group HR Manager and Head of Booster Group at Bayan Holding, a mother company with multiple subsidiaries in the UAE.

“I enjoy being with people from different backgrounds. They’re teaching me a lot, and I love it.

TGFM THE GLOBAL FILIPINO MAGAZINE www.theglobalfilipinomagazine.com 23

Though I do it in a small way, I feel passionate about mentoring people. Kind people who are always willing to help others are my favorite,” she said.

“It was for this reason that I was motivated to choose to be in the Human Resources field. I am not claiming to be a kind person like them, but I am constantly striving to be kind to others. Mentoring people and fulfilling their dreams make me feel satisfied. Being one of the instruments that help them reach their goals is very rewarding for me,” she added.

Leslie never thought she would make it to where she is right now. Working overseas, for her, was like getting what she deserved.

“It is here where you can live a fair life, where if you strive hard, you will achieve what you deserve. I had a very simple dream. I just thought that I’d come work here and get a junior position until I return to the Philippines for good. It was just about providing for my family’s basic needs. Nothing else. But I think God has a better plan. He’ll give you what you deserve, sometimes even more,” the enthusiastic, seasoned HR professional said.

Enriching oneself

For Leslie, struggles are part of life. “That’s what everyone goes through before they achieve something,” she said.

Since she was a child, she has been interested in learning about things, how they work, and their purpose. Her curiosity led her to help others, even if it wasn’t her job.

Since studying and working are both parts of her life, she took all her free time to attend training programs, enroll in vocational courses, and learn anything she could.

She also revealed struggling with people around her because of the cutthroat competition in the industry.

“Competition was too fierce. There’s always misjudgment, racism, etc. Some people around me didn’t believe in me. Thanks to my husband and best friends (I’ve had three best friends in Dubai since 2008) who pushed me and supported me. They’re sent from above to keep me going. I got rejected many times, cried, and stopped dreaming,” she said.

“I have, however, always been motivated and encouraged by them. They always make me feel I am the best and hardest working person they know. Thus, I continued my journey by looking up to them and my family and believing God was always by my side. Up to this point, I have continued to fight and remain strong,” the grateful Leslie said.

Her only son is expected to finish university in two years. Having only one child, she plans to be start a company in Dubai or back home.

“It’s a dream come true to be in this position, but I also dream about owning a business, not just managing it,” she added.

When asked about her advice to her fellow Filipinos, Leslie said to keep going despite the obstacles and be resilient and ready to bounce back. Take risks despite adversity and initial setbacks, she added.

“Keep a positive attitude throughout every struggle. It is tough to live abroad, especially at the beginning. However, I would advise you not to let those struggles discourage you. Do not doubt your abilities. It is okay to put yourself under pressure. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Put your faith in yourself. You need to work on your dreams, and I’m sure you’ll succeed. Do good always and keep God at the center of your life,” she concluded.

Jeffrey Miguel “Jemi” Nicdao

From Pursuing a Passion to Becoming a Celebrity Fashion Stylist

VOLUME 3 | ISSUE 10 | FEBRUARY 2023 28 THE GLOBAL FILIPINO MAGAZINE image credit: supplied

Jeffrey Miguel “Jemi” Nicdao, a 29-yearold fashion stylist, entrepreneur, and celebrity fashion stylist, has come a long way from pursuing his passion to becoming one of the sought-after fashion stylists in the Philippines and overseas. He is the founder and CEO of Jemi Prenup Styling and Jemified Studio, where he creates a unique and personalized style for his clients.

Growing up in Angeles, Pampanga, Jemi has always had an eye for fashion. After finishing his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Therapy at Central Luzon Doctor’s Hospital, he worked as a Marketing Coordinator for Shakey’s when he was only 19 years old. However, he knew deep inside that his true passion was in fashion. He pursued this passion despite the challenges that came along with it.

Jemi’s journey towards becoming

a celebrity fashion stylist began when he became a pioneer in prenuptial shoots in the Philippines. His unique and outof-the-box styling caught the attention of Tim Yap, a prominent Filipino fashion personality, who featured Jemi in his column in the Philippine Star. This exposure led to more opportunities for Jemi, and he eventually became a regular fashion consultant on the morning show Unang Hirit on GMA.

One of the highlights of Jemi’s career as a fashion stylist was his viral prenuptial shoot for Joross Gamboa and his wife, as well as Rodjun Cruz and Diane Medina’s wedding in Turkey. His styling transformed his clients into celebrities, making them feel confident, beautiful, and unique.

Jemi’s love for fashion and his passion for helping his clients achieve their dreams led him to take his talents overseas. He started working in Dubai, where his clients financed his tickets and accommodation to do shoots. His unique styling caught the attention of many people, and he eventually became a sought-after celebrity fashion stylist, traveling to various countries for shoots and fashion shows.

Despite his success, Jemi had to endure many struggles along the way. He left his previous career as an FNB marketing officer and didn’t know anyone in the fashion industry. He traveled from Angeles to Manila with only five suitcases, taking the bus and getting massages to get by. However, he remained determined and focused on his goals, driven by his desire to make his family and friends proud.

Jemi’s mantra in life is to enjoy every day. He loves his job as a celebrity fashion stylist, which allows him to travel to different countries, meet new people, and create unique styles for his clients. He is passionate about his work and finds satisfaction in seeing his clients happy and confident.

Looking back on his journey, Jemi

is grateful for the people who have supported him along the way, including his family, friends, and clients. He is inspired by Tim Yap’s unique taste and style and strives to create something different and unusual in his own work.

THE GLOBAL FILIPINOS THE STORY OF OUR SUCCESS

Maria Janize Tamayo

From cafeteria cashier to administrative coordinator in Dubai

VOLUME 3 | ISSUE 10 | FEBRUARY 2023 32 THE GLOBAL FILIPINO MAGAZINE image credit: supplied

As someone who is brought up well, OFW Maria Janize Tamayo always looks to develop her skills and career to prosper in life.

Despite landing a cashier job for a small cafeteria in Sharjah during her first overseas work, she persevered and conquered all odds.

“I know there are a lot of places where I can be but UAE made it so easy for me to achieve what I seek. Besides, my family stays here and during that time, they told me that if you want things to grow for you, you must start pushing it your own way,” she said.

Before embarking on an overseas life, Maria Janize used to work as a teacher before finding herself in the customer service industry. From there, she realized that her career won’t grow had she stayed

long. She told her father about her enthusiasm to work overseas in 2012 and fully supported her decision.

Alive and surviving

When she moved to the UAE, she knew she made the right decision. Because of her perseverance, she secured a job in one of the leading companies in the region and got relocated from Dubai to Abu Dhabi.

Years passed, and she obtained another employment from one of the leading telecommunication companies in Dubai and worked as a key accounts manager, a position she held and considered the highlight of her overseas career.

Maria Janize now works as an administrative coordinator for Bayan Holding Group of Companies.

“I enjoy being challenged. Being in this current job, makes me learn more. Like anything and everything under the sun. Thanks to Bayan Holding for being supportive all the way and bringing out the best in me. With their help, I’m always challenging myself to be a better version of myself every day,” she added.

She said that the best thing about working outside the Philippines is the cultural exposure she gets which inspires her to have an open mind.

His father’s death some two years ago has also affected her; however, it also helped her to be motivated and climbed the ladder step-bystep towards self-development and work progress.

“My friends and work colleagues supported me all the way through these difficult times. I’m always looking up to my late father and his words of wisdom, I am always reminiscing the days when he used to tell me how great it is to achieve your dreams,” she said.

Maria Janize advised her fellow

OFWs to dream big and conquer them although it might take years.

“Also, manage your budget wisely. Never forget to save for rainy days. Make a list of your long- and shortterm goals. Trust the people who bring out the best in you and lastly, never give up on yourself, and don’t give up on love,” she added.
