Ian’s career trajectory is a fascinating tale of versatility and ambition. Starting in 2007, his professional journey abroad began with roles in various sectors including Accounts, Stock Markets, Brokerage, FMCG, and IT, leveraging his background in audit and accounting.

“My transition in the Middle East as an Auditor for a Stock Brokerage company laid the foundation for my career abroad,” Ian shared with The Global Filipino Magazine.

It wasn’t long before his passion for pop culture and his professional acumen found a meeting point at Comicave, marking the beginning of a remarkable chapter in his life.

When asked about his decision to work abroad, Ian cited the universal desire for better opportunities and financial stability as his initial motivators.

“Greener pastures were what we were all after,” he recalled.

However, the UAE offered more than just financial benefits—it provided a platform for career progression and a chance to make significant contributions to the pop culture industry, particularly in highlighting Filipino talent.

Before his international stint, Ian was an Audit Manager in one of the Philippines’ largest banks, a role that honed his skills and ignited his empathy towards others’ plights. His career in the Philippines was marked by challenges and learning experiences that prepared him for the global stage.

Ian’s passion for pop culture is not just a career choice but a reflection of his personal interests and childhood memories.

How overseas employment shaped the career of a senior HR professional in UAE

At the age of 59, Antia Ann Verzola Odero has established a remarkable career that stretches across several sectors and continents, currently excelling as the Senior Human Resources Administrator at Dubai Golf. Her life’s mantra, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,” encapsulates her approach to both life and career, advocating for clarity and effectiveness in all endeavors.

Antia’s professional journey showcases a blend of tenacity and adaptability. Initially, she began her career in the hospitality industry before branching out into the banking sector and later, the infrastructure industry. These experiences provided her with a robust foundation in various business practices and cultural environments.

Her first international role was as an Executive Assistant at Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club from 1993 to 1995, a period when Dubai began its ambitious development projects.

“I had the opportunity to work alongside visionary colleagues and bosses which allowed me to learn how to work in multicultural environments and to be mentored,” Antia recalls with The Global Filipino Magazine, emphasizing the importance of those early lessons in shaping her approach to leadership and collaboration.

Broadening horizons in the Philippines and beyond

Following her initial stint in Dubai, Antia returned to the Philippines, where she

significantly enhanced her leadership and interpersonal skills in the international banking sector. She dealt with high-profile personalities and sensitive information, which honed her abilities in strategic management and confidentiality. Her career then took her to a major conglomerate where she continued to expand her skills in budgeting and international business dealings.

In 2007, drawn by Dubai’s ongoing development and professional opportunities, Antia moved back and soon rejoined Dubai Golf. Her role had evolved significantly, now encompassing a strategic function in human resources, managing hiring, budgeting, employee benefits, and development across multiple golf clubs and associated facilities.

Antia’s decision to work abroad was driven by both personal and professional factors. Initially, her move was to utilize her education and to boost her career prospects while supporting her family.

“When I went back abroad in 2007, I wanted to support my husband for our children’s education,” she explains.

The financial rewards were significant, allowing her broader opportunities for travel and business ventures.

Embracing the challenges and rewards of HR

In her current role, Antia relishes the daily interactions with people from diverse backgrounds.

“Being an OFW (Overseas Filipino

Antia Ann Odero Antia Ann Odero

Worker) myself, it is both fulfilling and satisfying to be able to help and assist fellow associates,” she states.

This aspect of her job provides her with immense satisfaction, particularly when she sees the positive impact of her work on her colleagues’ professional lives.

However, working abroad came with its own set of challenges, particularly during her early years. The initial separation from family and adjustment to a new culture were difficult.

“I suffered from being homesick and lonely much more during my first stint in Dubai,” Antia admits.

Supportive colleagues and evolving communication technologies over the years helped her overcome these challenges.

As she looks toward the future, Antia plans to leverage her vast experience to help others. She intends to start a recruitment and manpower company to provide opportunities for fellow Filipinos interested in working abroad. She remains actively involved in the Filipino HR Community in Dubai, aiming to support and develop HR practitioners with current and relevant practices.

Her advice to other Filipinos working abroad is empowering: “Believe in yourself and keep moving forward. Hard work, integrity, and continuous learning are crucial. You are worth more than you think.”

Rosalia “Leah” Tan

Rosalia “Leah” Tan, a 48-yearold widow and single mother of three, has carved a successful path as the Managing Director and owner of GRS Travel and Tourism LLC in Dubai. Her journey, spanning a decade abroad, reflects a narrative of resilience, strategic risk-taking, and dedicated entrepreneurship.

In 1994, Leah embarked on her international career as a travel agent at Dana Express Travel in Dubai.

“I enjoyed working as a Travel Agent and learned more about how to assist clients, book tickets, and manage the branch,” she recalls with The Global Filipino Magazine.

Her early years in Dubai were challenging yet formative, providing her with the skills and determination needed to pursue greater entrepreneurial ventures.

Leah’s decision to work abroad was driven by necessity and ambition.

“The reason why I work abroad is because I need to work for the future of my kids and family since I am the breadwinner,” she explains.

This decision marked the beginning of a significant transition from her earlier roles in the Philippines, where she worked as a Technical Sales Engineer and later managed her own internet café business.

The highlight of her career came after overcoming numerous challenges, including leaving a stable business in the Philippines to venture into the uncertain yet promising opportunities abroad. Leah’s entrepreneurial spirit led her to establish her own travel agency, leveraging the knowledge and network she had built over the years.

“Thanks to [my friend and former employer], I learned about the travel agency field. Thank God also for giving me wisdom for having more clients and ideas about this field,” she gratefully shares.

What Leah enjoys most about her current role is the direct interaction with clients, assisting them beyond mere transactions to ensure they receive value and excellent service. “I’m enjoying assisting and convincing clients to process visas, book tickets, and other tourism fields,” she says. Her approach is holistic, focusing on building long-term relationships rather than one-off sales.

Working abroad has its set of challenges, yet Leah finds it rewarding.

“Working abroad is excellent and a good privilege for us Filipinos,” she states, acknowledging the mixed experiences of overseas Filipino workers but emphasizing the opportunities it presents not just for financial improvement but

also for personal growth.

Leah’s journey has not been without personal struggles, especially concerning her family life back in the Philippines. The difficulties in her marriage and subsequent responsibilities as a single parent shaped her resolve.

“I was suffering from unreasonable jealousy from my partner...I am the one supporting my kids for our daily needs and for the future of my kids,” she shares, reflecting on the emotional and financial burdens she had to bear.

Looking ahead, Leah is optimistic about the future, planning to expand her business and explore new ventures.

“I’m planning to have more branches of GRS Travel and Tourism LLC and GRS Readymade Garments LLC in God’s grace and open other business opportunities in other fields,” she outlines her ambitions.

For those facing challenges abroad, Leah offers advice grounded in faith and practical wisdom: “Don’t lose hope. God will always make a way for us. Always do good things to others and most especially to God. Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

AffordaCup: The
Kapampangan
in Dubai’s

Aunique culinary gem called AffordaCup offers a taste of Kapampangan culture in the bustling metropolis of Dubai.

Founded by a dedicated team of siblings, Ramona, Aiza, and Jovito Mariano, along with Ramona’s husband, Cris Sotto, this restaurant has quickly become a beloved spot among both locals and expatriates.

Cris, whose background in architecture gave him a penchant for design and construction, found his true calling in the hospitality industry.

“My career transition from architecture to restaurateur was driven by my desire to create a space where people could gather and share a meal that felt like home,” he explains with The Global Filipino Magazine.

This dream was shared by his partners, who each brought their own unique skills and experiences to the table.

Ramona, who first moved to the UAE as a nurse, quickly ascended to managerial roles in healthcare before deciding to venture into the food industry with her family.

“Starting Afford’aCup was a landmark decision in my life,” Ramona reflects.

“It encapsulated all the challenges and triumphs I faced and overcame in my career.”

Aiza, with her background in accountancy and later as a jeweler, brought her business acumen to the enterprise.

“The journey wasn’t easy, but every challenge was a stepping stone towards our goal,” says Aiza.

Her financial expertise and managerial experience were critical in shaping the business strategy of Afford’aCup.

Jovito Mariano, the third sibling, contributed his marketing prowess and architectural insight.

“This venture was more than just opening a restaurant; it was about crafting an experience that resonated with the values and tastes of our Kapampangan heritage,” Jovito states proudly.

Celebrating Kapampangan cuisine

The idea to introduce Kapampangan cuisine to Dubai stemmed from a desire to celebrate their rich cultural heritage and offer a taste of home to the Filipino community in the UAE.

“We saw an opportunity to fill a gap in the market and at the same time, offer something close to our hearts,” Cris comments on the motivation behind their culinary offerings.

Among the most popular dishes at Afford’aCup are sisig, caldereta, karekare, and halo-halo. Each dish is prepared with authentic ingredients and traditional methods, adapted slightly to cater to local tastes while maintaining their original essence.

“Our aim is to provide a culinary bridge between cultures,” Aiza adds.

Sourcing authentic ingredients posed a significant challenge. The team worked tirelessly to establish connections with local suppliers and occasionally had to find substitutes that met their strict quality standards without compromising

the authenticity of the flavors.

“It’s a delicate balance, ensuring the authenticity of our dishes while adapting to the availability of local ingredients,” Ramona explains.

Introducing Kapampangan cuisine to a multicultural audience required more than just serving food; it involved educating their customers about the cuisine’s rich history and cultural significance. Jovito spearheaded marketing initiatives that highlighted the uniqueness of their offerings.

“We’ve always wanted our restaurant to be more than just a place to eat; it’s a place to learn and experience new cultures,” he says.

Afford’aCup actively participates in food festivals and cultural events, further promoting Kapampangan cuisine and culture.

“These events are a fantastic platform for us to showcase our culinary traditions and engage with the community,” Aiza notes.

A family’s legacy

For Cris, Ramona, Aiza, and Jovito, Afford’aCup is more than just a business. It’s a passion project that brought them closer together as a family and allowed them to share a piece of their heritage with the world.

“Seeing our team grow and our customers enjoying our food is incredibly fulfilling,” Ramona shares, echoing the sentiments of her partners.

Jian Carlo Rubio

Navigating challenges abroad: The rise of a Filipino professional in the Middle Eastern banking sector

32 VOLUME 4 | ISSUE 11 | MARCH 2024 TGFM THE GLOBAL FILIPINO MAGAZINE

AUAE-based Filipino has carved a niche for himself in the world of business analysis and management information systems (MIS) at Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank. Jian Carlo Rubio’s journey reflects a blend of resilience, adaptability, and relentless pursuit of growth, emblematic of the spirit captured by his life’s mantra, “Ad astra per aspera” — through hardships to the stars.

Jian, known affectionately as JC to his family, embarked on his journey as an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) in 2014, catalyzed by an unexpected phone call that led him to a career-changing opportunity in Dubai.

“I thought it was a fraud because years had passed after I registered my profile on workabroad.ph,” he recalls with The Global Filipino Magazine.

Yet, the authenticity of the offer from Citi Bank and the absence of any financial strings convinced him to leap into the unknown.

Starting as a Bank Sales Officer, Jian faced the daunting challenge of adapting to a new sales environment far from home.

“I had to talk to strangers and build relationships from scratch,” he explains, detailing the initial struggles of meeting sales targets and navigating the cultural landscape of the UAE.

Despite these hurdles, his determination saw him through, and he gradually fell in love with his new home.

However, 2016 brought significant trials when Jian was affected by company downsizing.

“It was the most difficult period in my life. Anxiety and uncertainty started to seep in, and sadness and longing for home began to haunt me,” he shares.

This period tested his resolve deeply, pushing him to the brink of despair.

Rescue came through the support of friends and a renewed sense of purpose, leading to a position as an outsourced Support Officer in a bank in Abu Dhabi. Here, Jian’s IT background proved advantageous, allowing him to engage deeply with data analysis and project involvement, which aligned closely with his academic pursuits in information technology.

His consistent performance and dedication led to a promotion to MIS Analyst and eventually absorption into the bank’s payroll.

“I continued what I had been doing: learning along the way, expanding my experience, upskilling, and personally investing in my education,” Jian says, highlighting his journey from managing data to managing a team.

Reflecting on his decision to work abroad, Jian notes it was driven by a desire for independence and the pursuit of his ambitions.

“I wanted to experience life outside of the Philippines,” he states, emphasizing the personal and professional growth he has experienced since moving to Dubai.

Before his venture abroad, Jian’s career in the Philippines was marked by roles in both private and government banking sectors, and even as a university lecturer. These experiences not only honed his professional skills but also fueled his passion for teaching and helping others, which he continued in Dubai by volunteering as a trainer at a start-up training company.

Today, Jian’s role involves intricate data analysis that informs significant business

decisions.

“Numbers reveal a lot...they do not lie,” he asserts, underscoring the objective clarity that data brings to business strategy.

The collegial atmosphere and the vibrant team dynamics at his workplace also add to the job’s appeal, making every workday enjoyable and fulfilling.

For Jian, living and working abroad has expanded his worldview, exposing him to new cultures and people, which he cherishes greatly. Despite the initial struggles, including financial hardships and personal setbacks, his journey has been one of continuous learning and adaptation.

Looking to the future, Jian remains open to possibilities, whether that involves continuing his career abroad or eventually returning to the Philippines to teach and share his experiences. His advice to fellow OFWs is heartfelt and pragmatic: “Your faith will give you strength...You’re not alone. Be honest and kind, and never stop learning.”

Brent Cataneo Amado

How a young Filipino’s passion led him to perform on the world’s most prestigious stage

34 VOLUME 4 | ISSUE 11 | MARCH 2024 TGFM THE GLOBAL FILIPINO MAGAZINE

At the age of 9, living as a Filipino expatriate in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Brent Cataneo Amado is not just any child. He is a prodigy, a young pianist whose fingers dance on the keys with a maturity and emotion that belie his tender years. Brent’s story is one of passion, dedication, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence that has led him from the quiet confines of his home during the pandemic to the grand stages of international music competitions.

Starting his musical journey at the age of 6, Brent quickly moved from being a novice to playing complex pieces like Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Fur Elise.

“At six years old, I began taking piano lessons,” Brent recalls with The Global Filipino Magazine.

“My mother made the decision to push me to take piano lessons since we often attend online classes during the pandemic and mostly were restrained at home.”

In a remarkably short period, Brent’s talent shone brightly, earning him a bronze award in the World Classical Music Awards in Europe and another in the London Young Musician 2022.

By the age of 7, he had already clinched the Gold Medal in the Gulf Musician Idol 2022 in the piano category. His crowning achievement to date is winning the American Protégé, which has invited him to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York in June 2024.

“If I’m not mistaken, I’m the first Filipino Kid to perform and who will debut solo performing piano in this famous Carnegie Hall in New York where most famous legends perform,” he shared.

This significant milestone has not only put him on the map but also got him featured in major newspapers in Bahrain.

But Brent’s interests and talents are not confined to the piano. He is also an accomplished artist and athlete. Last year, he was a participant in the Grand Art Exhibition held at the University of the Philippines Diliman and has consistently won in the Bahrain Art Culture and Heritage Drawing Competition. Brent is equally active in sports, having ventured into triathlon, swimming, and taekwondo, bagging medals in the latter two.

On a typical day, Brent balances rigorous piano practice with his studies and other interests.

“It is actually a little challenging at first,” he admits, speaking of his early days learning the piano.

His disciplined routine involves morning classes followed by training or practice in the afternoon, with weekends and school holidays offering more flexibility for leisure and enjoyment.

Reflecting on his first piano award, Brent said, “I’m amazed. It may seem difficult to win after less than a year of training, but I achieved it, and I’m really proud of myself.”

This win was not just a personal victory but a launchpad that propelled him into the limelight, validating his hard work and dedication.

The opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall is a dream come true for Brent, a moment he describes as “surreal.” As he prepares for this significant event, he is filled with anticipation, eager to showcase his talent on such an iconic stage.

“I’m a little anxious because I’ll be performing and meeting with international piano virtuosos,” he shared, revealing the humble side of this young achiever.

Beyond his musical pursuits, Brent enjoys playing with Rubik’s cubes, reading, and drawing. His favorite artworks are the ones he displayed at the University of the Philippines Diliman’s Grand Art Exhibition, which reflect his love for sports.

When asked about how he balances his diverse interests, Brent credits his mother’s unwavering support.

“She always plans ahead for me when it comes to my training schedule, playtime, and overall enjoyment,” he says gratefully.

This support system has allowed him to excel not only in his extracurricular activities but also academically, where he consistently receives top grades.

For other kids looking to pursue their passions, Brent offers sage advice, emphasizing the importance of hard work, perseverance, and discipline over talent alone.

“Discipline must always be applied consistently. And a hard work always has a disciplined sound to it,” he advises.
