Cobar Roosterettes make a return to the winning circle

Kayla Hasson to the field after injury bolstered the Cobar side for their Round 7 Castlereagh League Tag game against Binnaway on Saturday.

Hasson’s on-field presence, along with the experience and team talk by veteran Zoë Egan (who was also back from injury) steered the Cobar side to a confident 26-4 win.

Roosterettes’ playmaker Brianna Watson worried the Binnaway defenders from the outset.

Watson opened the scoring early for Cobar with a try under the posts and her successful conversion gave Cobar an early 6-0 lead.

Both sides were strong in defence and the match was nearly 20 minutes in before the next points were scored, by Binnaway, which closed the margin to 4-6.

Just before halftime, Hasson knocked down a clearing kick by Binnaway, regathered and raced 40 metres to score the Roosterettes’ second try next to the posts.

Egan’s successful conversion extended Cobar’s lead to 12-4.

After the re-start, Binnaway dominated possession for the first 10 minutes but the Cobar side defended their continuous attacking raids.

After taking a quick tap from a penalty, Watson crossed for her second try of the game and Egan also took advantage of another penalty close to the try line when she dived over to score.

The team’s Players’ Player, Jezebel Hitchins, playing at hooker had a big game directing play and an even bigger game in defence.

Along with Phoebe Pursehouse, Molly Carter, Bridgette Negfeldt, Georgia Boland and Hannah Carroll, their efforts limited the Bombshells to just the one try for the match.

Cobar’s fullback Sarah Morley ran through to score the final try in the last 10 seconds of the game and, with Watson’s successful goal, Cobar claimed a confident 26-4 win.

Binnaway’s sin-binned fullback then returned to the field which changed the status quo of the game. The Bombshells’ defence regrouped and tightened up to ensure no tries were scored for the next 10 minutes.

Kuras’ return also strengthened their attack and it was Binnaway who scored next through persistence and patience on the line. The unconverted try brought the margin back to 22 points, 36-14.

Binnaway’s mistake from the re-start kick gifted the Roosters the ball 10 metres out from the try line. Controlled and confident play by the Roosters resulted in Nathan McAndrew crossing to score.

Plater’s fifth successful conversion of the match extended Cobar’s big lead to 42-14 and a late consolation try for Binnaway brought the final margin to 42-18.
