You are about to experience a spectacular evening of live music performed in one of the world’s great music halls. The Palladium was designed to delight audiences and its acoustics are equally magical for the musicians performing on stage. The combination of musical brilliance and acoustical engineering will embrace your senses!

In the coming weeks and months, more of the Palladium’s neighbors and friends will begin to fill the hall, too. Many of these guests will be brand new to the world of arts, while others will be dedicated patrons eager to hear spectacular works performed live on the Palladium stage. It is a sensational season ahead. From country and jazz, to dance and classics, the Great American Songbook will be front-and-center encompassing all genres.

Born from an inspired collaboration between architect David M. Schwarz, sound design specialists Artec Consultants, Indianapolis-based CSO Architects, Shiel Sexton and the City of Carmel, the 1,600-seat concert hall is a performer’s and audience’s dream.

The magnificent hall offers audiences pitch-perfect acoustics combined with state-of-the-art amenities to create a listening environment that is second to none, as well as a lasting legacy for Central Indiana.

building FACTS Andrea Palladio’s Villa Rotunda in Vicenza, Italy was the inspiration behind the Palladium.

Palladio’s designs were the inspiration behind countless buildings in Europe and North America.

The White House, The Supreme Court, and Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello are examples of Palladio’s influence.

GENERAL INFORMATION The Center

Starting with the week-long grand opening of the Palladium in January 2011, the Center for the Performing Arts is poised to become an inviting gathering place for the community, along with the Center’s Tarkington theater and the Studio Theater. Combined, the three venues will be a place for the people to engage in communal intimacy, celebrating great art together. The Center is proud to be the performance home to seven local resident companies. It will also provide three of the finest stages in the world playing host to the globe’s most gifted performers.

Parking

Valet: Beginning 1 hour before the publicized performance time, valet parking is available at the Center Green’s loop driveway, at the Palladium’s South entrance.

Self-Park: Secure, on-site garage parking is located south of the Palladium.

Enter the Center’s parking garage off 3rd Avenue. Follow the signs to the Palladium’s entrances. For tickets and will call, enter the west entrance off 3rd Avenue.

Accessible Parking: Accessible parking is available on the Center Green’s loop driveway, just south of the Palladium. Additional accessible parking spaces are available in the surface lot on the west side of 3rd Avenue, directly across the street from the west entrance of the Palladium.

Accessibility

Arrival: Street level and elevator access is available in the Palladium’s West lobby located at the 3rd Avenue entrance and is also available in the East lobby located near the Monon Trail.

Seating: Wheelchair accessible seating is located in various sections of the hall. Special seating arrangements may be made in advance by calling the box office at 317.843.3800.

Restrooms: Accessible restrooms are located in the lower Salon level and Gallery level.

Assisted Listening Devices

Assisted listening devices are available free of charge at the lower Salon level at both sides of the coat check. A refundable deposit is required.

Coat Check

Coat check services are available on the east and west sides of the lower Salon level near the restrooms.

Facility Rental

Individuals, businesses and performing groups may rent the Palladium (1,600 seats), the Tarkington (500 seats) or the Studio Theater (200 seats), as well as seven distinct spaces suitable for your special event. Let our experts help you determine which space best suits your important event.

Food & Beverage

Food is not permitted in the hall. Concessions are available before the performance through intermission. The Basile Café, operated by Kahn’s Catering, will open Spring 2011, and feature a unique pre-show café menu.

Late Arrival Policy

Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of house management. Video and Audio simulcast of the performance is available in the lobbies for your convenience.

Emergency Procedure

In the event of an emergency, you will be instructed by an announcement indicating the best method of exit. Please notice the multiple red exit signs.

For your safety, please exit in a calm and orderly manner.

Electronic Devices

Use of cellular phones, pagers, cameras and recording devices are strictly prohibited in the theater. Please deactivate sounds on any electronic device so it will not disrupt the performance.

MEET OUR. CHAIRMAN Rollin Dick, board chairman for the Center for the Performing Arts, has played a pivotal role in everything from the Center’s overarching vision to the recruitment of new board members and fundraising.

Dick brings a rich resume to the Center’s table. He was a partner in the CPA firm of Cooper and Lybrand for more than 20 years. He moved on to a position as the Chief Financial Officer at Conseco, and is currently involved in private investing activities through MH Equity Investors in Indianapolis. Dick has served on the boards of the Indianapolis Repertory Theater, the Civic Theater and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

This is Dick’s first experience with a new performing arts center. “I thought that it would be an interesting challenge to be on the ground floor of something that has an opportunity to become a landmark activity in central Indiana,” he says.

Dick expects a lot of fine arts lovers to find their way to the Center for the Performing Arts, but he also hopes people who visit out of curiosity will come back because they fell in love with the facility and its offerings.

“The Center is going to expand the interest in arts and culture throughout central Indiana,” Dick says.

Opening Night Gala Saturday, January 29, 2011

The setting couldn’t have been more elegant for the gala concert and dinner. Artistic director Michael Feinstein introduced a bevy of performers ranging from jazz artist Chris Botti, to vocalists Neil Sedaka and Dionne Warwick. Joining Feinstein in hosting was Cheyenne Jackson. The gala also included performances by the Carmel Symphony Orchestra and the Indianapolis Children’s Choir.

Following the gala, on Sunday afternoon, the Palladium’s first Bose McKinney & Evans Classics Series concert debuted featuring a roster of world-class artists: Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Miró Quartet and cellist Lynn Harrell.

JAZZ ROOTS: A Larry Rosen Jazz Series was created in conjunction with the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami–Dade County.

Larry Rosen Larry Rosen is the Chairman of Larry Rosen Productions, Inc., creator and producer of “Jazz Roots: A Larry Rosen Jazz Series,” co-founder of GRP Records, co-founder of LRSmedia, and co-founder and past Chairman of N2K, Inc. (NASDAQ). Mr. Rosen is the creator and producer of the PBS television series “Legends of Jazz,” and is the creator and producer of multi-media TV series “Recording: the History of Recorded Music,” with hosts Quincy Jones and Phil Ramone.

Take 6 The a cappella jazz group known as Take 6 are not only the heirs to the rich tradition of the doo-wop and gospel groups of the 1950s, but also the leaders in the second wave of jazz and pop vocal groups that emerged in the 1990s. With these noteworthy legacies at their foundation, these multiple Grammy winners continue to look and move in a forward direction as the first decade of the 21st century unfolds.

The Take 6 story began at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama, in 1980, when freshman Claude V. McKnight III formed a quartet known as the Gentlemen’s Estate Club. Mark Kibble and Mervyn Warren joined shortly after, and the group briefly took the name of Alliance. After college, the group signed with the Warner Brothers label in 1987 and changed their name to Take 6. Their self-titled debut album, released the following year, scored two Grammy Awards and landed in the top ten on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz and Contemporary Christian charts.

The group went on to record or perform with numerous jazz luminaries, including Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald and Stevie Wonder.

The 1990 follow up album, “So Much 2 Say,” was equally successful, climbing to the number two spot on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart and scoring a Grammy for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album. Warren left the group a year later and was replaced by Joey Kibble, Mark’s younger brother. The group added instrumentation to their purely a cappella sound beginning with the 1991 holiday release, “He Is Christmas.” The album scored yet another Grammy, this time for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.

A string of finely crafted recordings continued throughout the remainder of the decade; two of which (“Join the Band” (1994) and “Brothers” (1996)) were Grammy winners.

In 2000, Take 6 released a live recording and a best-of collection, followed by “Beautiful World” in 2002. After “Beautiful World” the group launched their own Take 6 label. Their maiden voyage in the new venture was “Feels Good,” released in 2006.

Take 6 joined Heads Up International with the release of “The Standard” in August, 2008. The album includes guest appearances by R&B luminaries Aaron Neville and Brian McKnight, as well as veteran jazzmen George Benson, Al Jarreau and Jon Hendricks. “The Standard” garnered three Grammy nominations in 2009.

In 2010, teaming again with Heads Up Records, Take 6 released their third Christmas album; a collection of holiday favorites and classic Christmas standards, titled “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”

Yolanda Adams Joyful, uplifting, inspiring, affirmative, exuberant, playful, and universal in its appeal and intention — that is the music of Yolanda Adams. Working with some of the biggest names in pop, R&B, hip-hop, and gospel, Yolanda Adams’s career has been marked by a string of hugely successful albums, sold-out tours, stand-out TV appearances, and a desire to incorporate into her music a multitude of genres and influences.

A lifelong resident of Houston, Texas, Yolanda grew up in a household filled with spirit, soul and songs. Her mother studied music, and Yolanda and her five younger siblings heard everything from jazz to classical to rhythm and blues.

With the assistance of composer/producer Thomas Whitfield, Yolanda recorded 1987’s “Just As I Am,” which drew comparisons to Aretha Franklin and lead to subsequent releases. 1991’s “Through The Storm” earned Yolanda several Stellar Awards. Four years later, the R&B-infused “More Than A Melody” garnered Yolanda her first Soul Train Lady of Soul Award and Grammy nomination.

The excitement of Yolanda’s live performances was captured on 1996’s “Yolanda…Live in Washington,” which brought her another Stellar Award and another Grammy nomination, and lead to her signing with Elektra Records.

A testament not only to the power of faith but also the possibilities of collaboration, 1999’s “Mountain High…Valley Low” allowed Yolanda to work with A-list producers like Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and Keith Thomas. The album would go multi-platinum; receive a Grammy Award and the first American Music Award for Inspirational Artist of the Year; win several Stellar Awards; and spawn the hugely successful Sisters In the Spirit Tour, which became the inspiration for Yolanda’s acclaimed second live collection, “The Experience.” That same year Yolanda also released her first holiday album, “Christmas With Yolanda Adams,” and gave birth to her daughter. In 2001, Yolanda entered the studio to record the richly satisfying “Believe.”

2005’s “Day By Day” marks Yolanda’s first album for Atlantic Records.

Yolanda continued to tour during this time and began to lay the groundwork for her Voice of an Angel Foundation, which focuses on mentoring high school students nationwide in order to help them find a career in education.

By Carol Baker Director of Education and Outreach You have been blessed with many opportunities, awards and honors in your life. What parts of your career and/or life are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of being a mom! My ten-year old daughter, Taylor, is the greatest kid on earth! I have to say that she is the blessing in my life that I’m most proud of. Aside from music, she helps me understand that I’ve done (and am doing) something right! Motherhood comes very naturally for me. As a child, I enjoyed helping my mom. I used to help my siblings with their homework, like I do now with my daughter. My mother is not with us now, but my 94-year-old grandmother lives with us and I love the influence she has brought into the household. As a single mom, I think it’s very good for my daughter to have her here with us. It’s such a blessing!

I’m also proud that since 1991 I have been a full-time musician. I am blessed that my music continues to be relevant, positive, encouraging and uplifting to others.

Tell us about your radio show.

Based in Houston and syndicated in over three dozen markets, the “Yolanda Adams Morning Show” impacts the fan base on a broader scale.

We talk scripture, patience, love, forgiveness, prayer and even whether or not you do pray! We talk about the everyday things we encounter in life.

People can call into the show and share their opinions as well. I get up at 3:30 AM, but by doing my show early in the mornings, I have more time to spend with my daughter, Taylor. I get to spend time with her afterschool and in the evenings. In fact, I try to keep my performing gigs on the weekends, so I can minimize my time away from home.

Tell us about “Points of Power.”

My book, Points of Power, has taken the benchmarks of the radio show and put them all in one place and I’m glad that my book can be uplifting for others.

The show I’ll never forget…

In 2003 I was at the BET Awards in the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. It was the night of the performance and the place was all a-buzz!

I was heading back to my seat from backstage when all of sudden Michael Jackson comes out on stage with a long cape; wrapping it around James Brown – right on stage! They danced together. Michael was doing some classic James Brown moves – with his own spin on them, of course. And, there was James Brown, with tears rolling down his face. Two great legends on stage together! That will be a performance I will never forget!

What advice might you have for young aspiring artists?

Regardless of whether or not you’re a performing or visual artist, love what you do! You should love it so much that if you don’t get paid for it, it wouldn’t matter. Learn as much as you can about the area of the arts that you love; learn from the folks that came before you and don’t make their mistakes. Remember that longevity is the key in any genre. Look at Nancy Wilson and Gladys Knight!

What do you want people to know about you and your music?

God gave me the “cool” assignment. It’s the “cool” assignment because I get to sing and share music that is encouraging and conversational. You can find yourself in my music. The challenges and issues you face in your lives are all present in my music. The solutions are in the choruses. Listen to the music and you will find yourself there. My music is relevant.

President since September 2009, Steven B. Libman’s most recent venture was a three-year term as Managing Director of the Tony award-winning La Jolla Playhouse, in La Jolla, California, during which he helped the Playhouse achieve significant growth and record fundraising. Steven will be responsible for creating the strategic direction of the Center, hiring the staff, recruiting the board, programming the three venues, and creating a collaborative atmosphere among all constituents.

Michael Feinstein, the multi-platinum selling, five-time Grammy-nominated entertainer dubbed “The Ambassador of the Great American Songbook,” is considered one of the premier interpreters of American Popular Song. More than a mere performer, he is nationally recognized for his commitment to the American Popular Song, both celebrating its art and preserving its legacy for the next generation.

In addition to serving as Artistic Director, Mr. Feinstein will perform frequently at the Center for the Performing Arts and assist with programming.

There are 32 staircases in the building, including 2 grand staircases allowing patron movement between floors.

PICKING. THE PERFECT. STEINWAY An October afternoon in 2010. Artistic Director Michael Feinstein. And a trip to the Steinway & Sons factory in Queens, New York. Those are the elements that fell into place during the Palladium’s piano selection process. After nearly two hours of playing, playing and re-playing, two concert grand pianos were chosen to grace the stage of the Palladium. The sound?

All-American hand-crafted Steinways for a world-class concert hall. “They have to be two contrasting pianos,” explains Feinstein. “To have two pianos sound the same would be like having the appetizer and entrée made of the same thing.”

The Palladium houses a special acoustic canopy made up of space framing and large, thick shapes of glass.

12" thick fully grouted masonry walls surround the Main Hall.

2.5" thick acoustic doors are located throughout the Main Hall.

Plaster is up to 2.5" thick throughout the Main Hall.
