HOLIDAY 2025 OFFICIAL PROGRAM

CHRIS ISAAK RETURNS WITH HIS TAKE ON THE HOLIDAYS
The Payne and Mencias families have long believed in the power of the arts to inspire, connect and transform individuals and communities. With their latest contribution — a transformative donation for the Palladium’s naming rights — these families ensure that art and culture will thrive in Central Indiana for years to come.

As a business leader across Indiana and beyond, Ice Miller is proud to help elevate the communities in which we live and work. The firm supports more than 100 nonprofit organizations throughout our region, and we are pleased to once again collaborate with Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts to engage, inspire, and help build dreams.
The holidays are a special, twinkly time at Allied Solutions Center, with ice skating and Christkindlmarkt festivities outside on Carter Green and seasonal productions inside the cozy venues.
As always, the Center Presents performance season sponsored by Allied Solutions offers something for everyone, from beloved traditions to fresh surprises, Christmasrelated and otherwise.
Our Old Town Holiday Series includes the ever-popular Dave Koz & Friends on their 12th visit to campus, songwriter Jon McLaughlin & Friends for the third consecutive year, and encore appearances by David Foster & Katharine McPhee, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and twangy rocker Chris Isaak, who discusses his love of Christmas songs and David Lynch films in our cover story on Page 6.
New this year, our friends at the Great American Songbook Foundation will present a screening of the classic musical White Christmas, accompanied by a display of rare artifacts connected to the film and a talkback with the daughter of star Rosemary Clooney.
And if the holiday hoopla becomes too much, we’re also proud to present some less seasonal but equally exciting performances by soul crooner Peabo Bryson, king of Disney soundtracks; Pink Floyd tribute Wish You Were Here, marking the 50th anniversary of their namesake album; Les Arts Florissants, recreating Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons as heard 300 years ago on period instruments; and the Shake ’Em On Down blues-rock tour featuring Samantha Fish, Cedric Burnside and Jon Spencer.
Special thanks to all the volunteers, donors, sponsors and patrons like you who make our work possible and worthwhile. Enjoy your holidays!

CHRIS ISAAK SHARES HIS ADVENTURES IN MUSIC AND ACTING
BY SCOTT HALL

Chris Isaak is optimistic about his upcoming fifth appearance at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts.
“We’re gonna get it right this time,” he quips. “We’ve been practicing.”
Known for his rockabilly-inspired sound and wide-ranging croon on hits such as “Wicked Game,” “Somebody’s Crying” and “Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing,” Isaak also has a sizable repertoire of holiday music to fuel his Dec. 13 performance at the Payne & Mencias Palladium. Two of his 13 albums – 2004’s Christmas and 2022’s Everybody Knows It’s Christmas – have Yuletide themes and include many original songs alongside the standards.
“I don’t know why, but I love writing Christmas songs,” he says by phone from his Nashville home. “Maybe because it brings back a lot of memories to me, so it evokes a lot. I had a wonderful family growing up, and I actually had those idyllic Christmases like they project on TV or in movies, where the whole family’s together, and they’re singing and they made presents for each other. We did all that.”
The fun side of the season is reflected in Isaak originals such as “Dogs Love Christmas Too.” As a proponent of animal rescue, he sometimes arranges for dogs from a local shelter to trot onstage during the song and advertise themselves for adoption.
But the holidays can be bittersweet too, as Isaak has noted in songs like “Christmas on TV,” in which the protagonist longs for a lost love while watching It’s a Wonderful Life.
“There’s nothing more heartbreaking than having a rough Christmas, so yeah, that’s in there too,” he says.
The show won’t be entirely themed, he notes. Fans can expect some rock ’n’ roll and familiar songs from other records, and if they’re coming to hear the signature tune “Wicked Game,” they probably won’t be disappointed. Does Isaak ever tire of playing it? Nope.
“When I play it live, people go, ‘Ohhh,’” he says. “They like to hear it, and I love playing it, and it reminds me of when I went to see Paul McCartney, who is a genius and awesome. Every song that he started, the whole crowd would go, ‘Ohhh.’”
Observant fans may notice some new faces backing Isaak onstage. His current lineup includes longtime bassist Rowland Salley with relative newcomers JD Simo on guitar, Chris Powell on drums and Michael Webb on keyboards and accordion. All are sought-after players in the world of
roots-rock and country music, and most have recorded with Isaak previously. Just as important, they have a good time on the road together, which he considers a crucial test of his recruiting skills.
“You have an audition, you listen to them play or you’ve been in the studio with them, but then you go on a bus, and you live with each other, and then you find out, did you make a good choice or not?” he says. “You go, ‘Oh, I hope they’re gonna be mellow or funny, or they’re gonna laugh at the right jokes, or they’re not going to be a troublemaker,’ and these guys are fantastic.”
- CHRIS ISAAK ON PERFORMING
Isaak says he feels “right at home” when he plays the Payne & Mencias Palladium, which shares an architect and many key features with another frequent haunt, the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville. Both concert halls have a prominent set of organ pipes behind the stage, and he likes pipe organs so much that he once considered installing a set of pipes during a home renovation until his manager talked him out of it. On previous visits, Isaak has been disappointed that Allied Solutions Center does not keep an organ console on site to play through the pipes.
“We gotta plug something in there,” he says. “I’ll bring my Casio keyboard to plug in.”
Running parallel to Isaak’s musical journey has been an acting career that included The Chris Isaak Show, a sitcom starring his band that ran for three seasons on Showtime, and film roles in Married to the Mob, The Silence of the Lambs, That Thing You Do! and Bernardo Bertolucci’s Little Buddha with Bridget Fonda and Keanu Reeves, among others.
Isaak had a particularly resonant relationship with the quirky, visionary auteur David Lynch, who shared his affinity for Mid-Century Americana. Lynch, who died of emphysema in January at age 78, used Isaak’s songs in his films Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart before casting the musician as an FBI agent in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992). The friendship left a powerful impression.
“Let me start by just saying I love David Lynch, and I couldn’t love him more, and I couldn’t respect his art and his genius more,” Isaak says. “I wish I could go back in time and just take his cigarettes away from him, you know?”
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER13

Lynch had a unique gift for breaking down scenes and guiding actors with simple directions, Isaak says. The two even wrote some songs together, despite the fact that music was one of few media Lynch didn’t normally work in. Isaak remembers the director as a sweet and sensitive soul who could be visibly troubled by events as simple as the realization that Coca-Cola had discontinued its 6.5-ounce bottles.
“He looked like somebody had shot his dog,” Isaak recalls. “I said, ‘Why are you so upset?’ and he looked at me – and it was earnest – and he goes, ‘Because I love those little bottles.’ His heart was on his sleeve.”
Focusing on live shows for now, Isaak has no specific recording projects on deck but never stops writing songs. Recently, he’s been writing with roots-rocker JD McPherson and pop singer Jessica Simpson, as well as singer-songwriter Nicole Atkins. He and Atkins now both record for Sun Records, launching pad of Isaak precursors Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison, and they share a commitment to making their shows into interactive events.
“Not only is she a great singer, and she has written some really cool and different songs, but she’s a really fun entertainer,” he says. “You gotta have fun and make it into a party and explain some of the music, and usually we get out into the crowd, and a lot of times the crowd ends up on the stage, and it’s fun that way.”
