Texas native Jane Delahoussaye looks forward to final Songbook Academy experience

ttimer

o be honest, Jane Delahoussaye had some doubts when her mom encouraged her to audition for something called The Songbook Academy® during her freshman year of high school. The process would require her to fill out an application, learn a couple songs and perform them on video.

“Being a regular teenage girl, I was like, ‘Oh, that sounds like so much work,’” she says with a laugh. “I was just being lazy, but I walked into The Songbook Academy on my first day and immediately was greeted with love and kindness and friendship. I called my mom that night, and I was like, ‘You were right. I’m sorry. This was one of the greatest days of my life.’”

Now, Delahoussaye has graduated from Logos Preparatory Academy in her hometown of Sugar Land, Texas, and is headed to the University of Alabama at Birmingham this fall to study Musical Theatre. But before she does, she is returning to Indiana for The Songbook Academy 2025, becoming the very first four-year participant as the national summer music intensive marks its 16th year.

Delahoussaye grew up in a musical family in Sugar Land, a fast-growing Houston suburb named for its historic sugar mills. Her father, Dayne, was a touring musician, and her mother, Addie, is a lifelong theater aficionado.

“We’ve got a big music room with all of my dad’s horns and pianos, and that’s where I do my voice lessons,” she says. “Art is really important to my family. It always has been.”

In fact, her extended family has made a tradition of renting a 15-passenger van and road-tripping to Carmel each summer to watch The Songbook Academy public performances. This year’s audience will include her parents, her sister Lily, three grandparents, an aunt and a cousin.

In addition to that supportive family, Delahoussaye is grateful to Inspiration Stage, a hometown community theater organization in which she has been active for a decade, and Brian Kay, her voice teacher and mentor for eight years.

“I wouldn’t be the person or performer I am without him, his love, and his support,” she says.

With no formal theater program at her small, private school, Delahoussaye helped to form a one-act play club that just won a state championship in its third year of existence. She also served as drill team captain and National Honor Society president during her senior year.

Meanwhile, following her sister’s lead, Delahoussaye has been taking American Sign Language classes since eighth grade and developed an interest in working with Deaf and hard of hearing performers. Through her teacher and the local theater group, she has taken part in ASL stage productions and met many people in the Deaf community, learning about their culture. As she begins college, she will also take classes at the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind, with the intent of earning an interpreter license and continuing to combine that interest with her theater work.

In her audition video for this year’s program, Delahoussaye signed in ASL while singing Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides, Now,” featured in the 2021 film CODA about an aspiring young singer with Deaf parents. She may do the same with the song she selects for Academy Week.

“I felt that was perfect for my audition, but I’m hopeful to find a song that is more authentic to me to perform and not just do what the movie did,” she says. “I got plenty of ideas, and I got plenty of people who are going to help me narrow it down and make it wonderful.”

As for the high points of her past academy experiences, she gushes about talking with Tony Award-winning actress Ali Stroker in 2023 about her work with Deaf West Theatre, a Los Angeles company working to bridge the gap between Deaf and hearing actors and audiences. She also enjoyed last year’s Public Masterclass with recording artist and three-time Tony nominee Joshua Henry.

“Boy, was I a fan girl,” she says. “I had to put my best face on to be as professional as possible, but oh my goodness, that was exciting.”

The lesson that sticks with her the most, however, came from 2023 guest mentor Liz Callaway, the award-winning singer and actor who sang the lead role in her favorite movie, the 1997 animated musical Anastasia

“She said to us, ‘There’s nothing to prove, everything to share,” Delahoussaye says. “And that’s honestly the way that I feel about Songbook Academy. This industry is so difficult to navigate, it feels like it always needs to be this tense competition. But Songbook Academy, every year I found, even when there’s a new crop of kids coming in, the value and the importance of supporting and uplifting each other and being authentically you and not being afraid to share that. And having 39 other friends that you make be fully invested in you and supporting you and uplifting you through every journey is something so special that not every program or learning opportunity gives you.”

As a result, Delahoussaye now has a network of friends from each of her experiences at The Songbook Academy who stay in touch with each other and meet up to reconnect when the occasion arises.

“I’m just incredibly grateful for The Songbook Academy and for everybody that has a hand on this project,” she says. “This opportunity has taught me so much about myself, about the performer that I want to be and the person that I want to be, and I’m really beyond excited for my final year.”

ABOUT THE SONGBOOK ACADEMY®

Now in its 16th year, The Songbook Academy® is a transformative summer music intensive for high school vocalists, presented by the Great American Songbook Foundation and its founder, Michael Feinstein. Each year, 40 of the nation’s most talented young singers are selected from hundreds of applicants to spend a week working with award-winning performers, professional musicians, and renowned music educators to develop their artistry with a focus on song interpretation and America’s musical heritage.

During this immersive week, which includes several fabulous performance events, students build lasting connections with fellow participants, alumni, and mentors as they explore, celebrate, and reimagine the timeless music of the Great American Songbook.
