WELCOME

Fall has officially arrived, and gosh, do we have some busy weeks coming up here at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts.

Several performances could be called unconventional. The Canadian group Choir! Choir! Choir! will lead an audience singalong to classic Queen tunes. The Voice Of Whitney features a live symphony orchestra accompanying video and original master recordings of the late pop diva. Bugs Bunny at the Symphony, with two shows on the calendar, pairs a live orchestra with 16 classic Looney Tunes shorts that were fueled by classical and operatic music.

The fall schedule includes two of the world’s most acclaimed guitarists, Tommy Emmanuel and Jesse Cook, and two of the world’s hottest young jazz stars: trumpeter Brandon Woody, with his band Upendo, and vocalist Samara Joy, the subject of this issue’s cover story. Also on the jazz tip, trumpeter Rick Braun and saxophonist Mindi Abair are teaming up for a smooth-jazz evening, Tito Puente Jr. will visit with his Latin Jazz Ensemble, and the Squirrel Nut Zippers will take us back in time to the genre’s New Orleans roots.

For beautiful vocals with international flair, options include the crossover quartet Il Divo, mariachi legend Aida Cuevas and the talented youngsters of the Vienna Boys Choir. Elsewhere, Lisa Loeb and Joan Osborne are joining forces to celebrate their ’90s hits, Glee star Matthew Morrison will demonstrate his Broadway chops, and viral video star Heather Land will bring the comedy.

If you haven’t visited lately, you may notice we’ve been upgrading our facilities and services to make the campus more welcoming to patrons with disabilities. The improvements include more accessible parking, touchless automatic restroom doors, and accommodations for people with sensory needs.

As always, thanks to all of our sponsors, donors and volunteers for their support, and thanks to you for your patronage. If you would like to support the mission of Allied Solutions Center, you’ll find more information on page 66.

A New Voice

Samara Joy puts her own spin on classic style

When Samara Joy stepped onto the Grammy stage in 2023 to accept her Best New Artist award — becoming only the second jazz performer in history to claim that honor — she embodied something new in the world of jazz. Here was a young woman from the Bronx who had managed to capture both the attention of Gen Z on TikTok and the respect of jazz purists, all while staying true to her authentic voice.

“I couldn’t really grasp it for the first couple of months,” she told Headliner magazine about the win. “For Best New Artist, it was 10 of us. I was like, ‘I’m the second to last underdog, or maybe I am the underdog!’ The impossible seemed to happen.”

But the impossible kept happening. The sophomore album that earned her the Best New Artist title, Linger Awhile, also claimed the prize for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Two of her songs have won in the Best Jazz Vocal Performance category. Her 2023 Christmas EP, A Joyful Holiday, also won Best Jazz Vocal Album.

I think the lack of extra bells and whistles allows people to lean in even closer and even more intimately into what I have to say, and I can share my heart for music.

Joy grew up singing in church and around the community, but not focusing on the jazz chops that would later see her compared to legends like Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. Her grandparents performed with Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes, and her father toured with gospel legend Andraé Crouch and maintained a home recording studio.

“I wasn’t interested in jazz early on,” she said. “I never got into it until I got to college. That wasn’t what my friends were listening to.”

This late start proved advantageous. When Joy entered SUNY Purchase’s jazz program, she brought a fresh perspective.

“I got into the jazz program not knowing a single thing about jazz except for the song that I learned,” she told Philadelphia’s WXPN-FM. “When I listened to jazz truly for the first time, I felt like this genre was a place where I could challenge myself and grow. But it was also a place where I felt comfort, and I felt like I could truly be myself and bring myself to it without sacrificing any other part of my identity.”

Joy’s approach to interpreting standards reflects both deep reverence for tradition and personal creative vision. She studied and analyzed Vaughan’s work methodically.

“I remember looking up videos of Sarah Vaughan to see if there was any difference between the live versus the studio versions,” she told Headliner. “I remember looking at a video of her singing “Lover Man,” “They All Laughed” and “Somewhere Over The Rainbow,” and it was so elegant and controlled, yet spontaneous. I wanted to be able to do that: to sing what I felt, but also be technically proficient enough to execute it and to have it be effortless and unrestrained.”

Yet Joy refuses to simply imitate her influences. “I don’t mean [my voice] to be exactly like Ella or exactly like Sarah,” she clarifies. “It took me a minute. I wasn’t trying to diminish the influences that I had. But I was trying to make it so that if I wanted to sing in a certain way, I had control over it.”

Her live performances demonstrate this artistic maturity. She views each concert as an opportunity for growth rather than mere replication. Joy’s band serves as a collaborative vehicle for this artistic evolution.

“In 2023, when we started playing together, versus now, is a completely different band,” she told WXPN. “It would not have happened if we did not have the time to play together and to develop that chemistry on stage.”

Joy’s approach to connecting with younger audiences seems natural and organic rather than calculated.

“It feels cool knowing that, because I didn’t set out to do that,” she tells Headliner about being called “the first Gen Z jazz singing star.” “The fact that people are gravitating toward something that I love to do and it’s inspiring them to want to sing or to want to listen to it and show other people ... I get a lot of people who come to me after the show and say, ‘My daughter introduced me to you’ or ‘My friend introduced me to you.’”

Her concerts emphasize intimate musical communication over spectacle.

“I think the lack of extra bells and whistles allows people to lean in even closer and even more intimately into what I have to say, and I can share my heart for music,” she told WXPN.

VIENNA BOYS CHOIR

STRAUSS FOREVER

The Vienna Boys Choir is one of the oldest and most famous choirs in the world. Boys have been singing at Vienna's Imperial Chapel since at least 1296. In 1498, Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I established a Court Chapel in Vienna where he declared that boys would be among the singers, thus laying the foundation for the Vienna Boys Choir. Today, the former imperial ensemble is a private, nonprofit organization with a primary and grammar school for 330 boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 19, with a focus on choral music and singing. The four boys’ choirs perform almost 300 concerts per year.

The campus also draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year for other public events.

Each year Allied Solutions Center provides access to the arts for thousands of people of all ages – building community, enriching lives and inspiring minds young and old. Education and outreach initiatives include performing arts classes for children and adults and special programs for upcoming generations, such as the interactive Peanut Butter & Jam concert series for preschoolers, the Palladium PALS reading club, summer camps, free Student Matinees and the Student Discount Ticket program, through which students can attend select performances for just $15.

You and your preschooler can curl up in a little ball of fur or chase mice around the room. Just wait until they get their itty, bitty, kitty paws on the drums, xylophones and other percussion instruments provided by singer/guitarist Michelle Marti in this age-appropriate music class for young children attending with a parent or caregiver.

For ages 10 months to 5 years (best for 18 months to 4 years). Participation is limited to 10 children, with a minimum of five required to offer the class.
