SAVE THE DATE

The BSIA is an active supporter of women in security and is playing an role in ensuring that we continue to encourage more talented females into the industry Our security officer services awareness campaign, ‘People, Property, Places: Professionally Protected’, which includes a national recruitment campaign, ‘Security: a career of choice’ has at its heart a clear message that security is for everyone – and anyone – and while we can see a clear improvement in recruitment and promotion of women in our industry, there is still much to do.

T

Year on year, the gender balance in the industry is improving but not at the pace that is really required, as today the estimate is that only 12% of the frontline security officer personnel is female, though this figure is up from 2016 when it was only 9% This clearly has to change and it is essential that as a collective we continue to balance these numbers out.

By employing more women into the industry, we are bringing in a breadth of different skills and dynamics and companies are seeing the advantages that a diverse team can bring to both its clients and the wider industry It can also improve the culture of the workplace environment offering broader thinking and viewpoints, and also potentially financial performance Recent research, carried out by Deloitte concluded that a diverse workforce improves innovation by 20%.

Over time the perception of the industry as an attractive role for women is changing; the 2019 Perpetuity Research report ‘Women in Security’ highlighted that those who work in the sector indicated their perception was more positive now than when they started The most common reason given was that they now have a greater understanding of the realities of the sector, finding the work to be more interesting and varied than their original perception of what security work involved, feeling that they had benefited from lots of different opportunities to learn more about security

The landscape of the industry is always changing for the good and it’s safe to say that it is unrecognizable from how it was when I joined the industry Thank you to all our contributors to this edition of BSIA Connect for their invaluable contributions and achievements as some of the many female trailblazers throughout the sector.

As Director of STARS and Front of House Services at Securitas UK, Jacey Bloomberg is passionate about making an impact on customer service, and when it comes to service standards, is on a mission to transform the industry.

I’ve been in the security industry for nearly 20 years After a successful career in retail, I wanted to make a bigger impact, specifically in customer service and people development. Security had a real gap in service standards, and I knew I could bring my skills to make a difference.

It wasn’t just about joining the industry - it was about transforming it

I started as a Client Liaison Manager at another security company, focused on understanding what clients wanted Over time, I moved into consultancy, operations, and directorial roles. For the past decade, I’ve been with Securitas UK, leading major projects, which has transformed how we deliver front-ofhouse services.

STARS has almost 1,000 employees across 27 countries! In the UK, 64% of our STARS employees are female. Globally, we’re seeing a real shift too, with a 42% female workforce. The program is helping change perceptions and opening doors for female leadership in security.

I launched the Security Trained Assistance and Reception Services (STARS) program at Securitas UK because I saw a gap in the market - where front-of-house security and traditional receptionist roles overlapped. STARS combines these roles into a highly skilled

position, giving clients a better service and our people a more engaging role It also creates opportunities for more women to enter the security industry, which is crucial for its long-term sustainability STARS isn’t just about filling a gap; it’s about setting a new industry standard, both in the UK and globally.

We started with just four employees in London eight years ago. Now, STARS has almost 1,000 employees across 27 countries! In the UK, 64% of our STARS employees are female. Globally, we’re seeing a real shift too, with a 42% female workforce The program is helping change perceptions and opening doors for female leadership in security, showing that women have a strong place

Although the Security Industry Authority reports that just over 12% of frontline security personnel are female, possibly reflected in the traditional hurdles of long shifts, pay, and family commitments, we are playing a pivotal role in changing that at Securitas UK, especially with STARS We offer shorter shifts, job shares, and roles that work around family life

The language we use in job ads also matters; we focus on transferable skills. For example, if you’ve worked in retail, you’ve already got security experienceopening and closing stores, cash handling, stock checks - it’s all part of it.

TRANSFORMING THE SERVICE

But how do we ensure more progress to senior leadership in se We need male allies, and we need on the value women bring w diverse skills and perspectives. just about matching women to roles; it’s about creating ro leverage their unique talents visibility for female leaders al security is key too, to inspire generation.

The language we use in job a matters; we focus on trans skills. For example, if worked in retail, you’ve alre security experience.

One of the challenges for Securitas UKand the industry as a whole - is changing the perception the general public has of the security industry We need to do more to educate the public on how multifaceted and essential security roles are Security is about so much more than what people typically think - especially with programs like STARS, which combine high-level customer service with professional security

It’s critical we encourage more women into the industry early at school or college level; we can’t wait for women to come to us - we need to go to them We need to educate and inspire young women about the opportunities in security, including programs like STARS, and show them how fulfilling a career in this industry can be If you’re thinking of joining the security industry, my advice is to go for it! Believe in yourself and find a mentor or champion to help guide you The opportunities are endless if you’re willing to take the leap

building, invited Securitas to propose a more appropriate and long-term solution for on-site security and front of house (FoH) services.

The twin objectives were to provide meet and greet services for tenants and visitors, and ensure the building’s people and assets were kept safe. Key requirements were professionalism, resilience and reliability. We recommended use of our STARS to provide a professional, impeccably presented point of contact for tenants, visitors and contractors during office hours

Our STARS combine FoH and administrative skills with security, providing added resilience on-site in the event of an incident Their enhanced security awareness training includes First Aid, ACT (Action Counters Terrorism) and also a bespoke induction to the client site itself A Securitas security officer is also present, 24/7 (the building offers 24- hour access), trained by us on-site to ensure a detailed knowledge of the building and familiarity with its occupants Relief personnel have been trained to the same level for both on-site guarding and STARS, to ensure continuity and resilience

With this solution, Securitas has elevated the quality and reliability of both security and reception services at this prestigious property We have also enabled Dexter Brown to consolidate their two requirements – FoH and security – into a single contract, with the local Securitas branch manager providing a dedicated point of contact

After graduating in 2009 in childhood studies, Sian Doherty of ARC Monitoring applied for the role of CCTV Operator and Administrator as an alternative to continuing in education Without knowing anything about the job or having ever seen a control room, she persevered and is now Managing Director.

After studying for three years at the University of Bristol, I decided I would go into teaching, but wanted to make sure I had lived a life outside of education before dedicating my life to it I also wanted to stay living in Bristol and also liked the idea of working four days on and four days off, meaning I could still live a student lifestyle on my days off with my friends, who were doing a 4th year at university.

I was 21 when I started, and I didn’t have the best first day after initial training. It was my graduation the day before and I decided it would be a great idea to celebrate with my friends into the early hours

The morning of my first shift, when I was due in at 8am, I was still in bed! When I finally got there, I was seriously late, hungover and dishevelled I thought, they are going to fire me but I am still here I think now it’s shaped how we work with employees; we don’t write anyone off because of one silly mistake.

Over the years I moved off of the four on four off schedule to provide consistency during the week. I really enjoyed working with installers to add new systems and did an IT course to strengthen my knowledge there I then turned my attention to processes and people within the control room, becoming the customer experience manager along the way

I sound like a control freak, but I set out to know as much as I could about everything we did. But, you can’t know everything, it’s taken me a while but having a team of experts around you is the key to success

THE COMPANY

ARC Monitoring is an NSI Gold Cat II Alarm Receiving Centre monitoring CCTV and Alarms across the UK from our dedicated control room Monitoring CCTV sounds easy, but there is a lot of nuance which is hard to get right

Our operators need to make quick decisions on sometimes quite small clips of video We always had a reporting system which allowed the operators to report what they saw in their own words but that did lead to consistency issues.

IN 2020, we decided that a global pandemic wasn’t a big enough a challenge, so we started work on our own, bespoke, reporting portal We had long since been unhappy with the generic reporting offered in industry software and wanted to showcase the dedicated efforts of our control room team.

As we stand in 2024, this reporting portal offers over 20 guided incident types for operators to follow and enter their notes, in their own words but with a uniform structure.

We are strict where we need to be. A site that is classified as closed, i e a clear boarder and no human activity should occur during the monitored period, has zero tolerance from us That means even if it looks like a delivery driver or it looks like a member of staff, we will escalate to a key holder

GRADUATE THINKING

It’s not our intention to frustrate our key holders but we are not there on site and cannot make that decision with absolute certainty. We have seen those assumptions go wrong in the past. Customers have said, at first we found the approach annoying but when it led to criminals being caught, who was masquerading as a member of staff, they praised our approach and wouldn’t be without it .

The general public think that we are watching cameras 24/7; they don’t understand that it’s private sites, and only detection alarms. The general public don’t know what a professional installation of a camera or alarm system is and therefore don’t understand how the police can be contacted. I think there is a big education piece to promote this and highlight where a selfmonitored/ off the self solution won’t give the desired response.

The Security Industry Authority did some research a couple of years ago about public perception of ‘private security’ which outlined that people do not value private security However our industry is propping up and supporting the police I think we have to work on public perception constantly, to try and push out those good news stories from professional installers and professional monitoring and professional officers attending. We

The adoption of AI within monitoring is very innovative currently and is refining the way we work It’s exciting but I can’t help but think, if this technology becomes more readily available, would it serve to improve self-monitored solutions? If the reliability of these solutions is improved, my fear is the police may then respond to these solutions We have to keep communication with the police open and we have to push regulation of the industry.

There are lots of great advocates in the industry, but we need them to keep speaking up and pointing out the successes of women. We also need to make sure those at the top, on boards, in the big businesses can see the benefit to their organisations of a diverse board Which in turn, should let women see that it is possible to succeed

I think it’s hard to be what you can’t see, so one of the barriers is women’s own belief about what is possible: we suffer more with self-doubt and imposter syndrome. I don’t think there are large groups of men, who despise women so much that they are actively trying to limit their progress - I think that the way businesses are shaped doesn’t always allow for women to progress For example it’s rare to find a part time leader

We need [advocates] to keep speaking up and pointing out the successes of women. We also need to make sure those at the top, on boards, in the big businesses can see the benefit to their organisations of a diverse board. Which in turn, should let women see that it is possible to succeed.

But there are so many opportunities in this industry, far more than it looks like from the outside My journey started from the bottom, frontline, so I would suggest to anyone, to spend some time with those on the frontline, to really understand the service we provide. Find your voice, don’t be afraid to speak up and share your thoughts and ideas: but don’t be late on your first day!

Amy Stanley, Head of Events & Festivals, FGH Security, joined the industry as a 17 year old apprentice taking her SIA Door Supervision course a year later

Eleven years on, Amy is a highly respected multiple award winning security professional

I really wanted to get involved with festivals but had to wait until I was 18 I was interested in learning more about the music industry and loved the outdoors, so festivals felt like a good mix of both

My first role was an Apprentice working in the office as I was too young to work on the front-line, but as soon as I turned 18, I sat the SIA Door Supervision course and got my licence From that point on I worked at as many events and festivals as possible, with an open mind to gain experience wherever I could I shadowed key managers to give me a strong understanding of the overall business

In 2014 I was awarded Most Dedicated Apprentice from Lancaster and Morecambe College, where I achieved qualifications in L2 and L3 Business Administration I then gained my L5 Crowd Science Certificate before progressing to Assistant Operations Manager at age 21. I’d found my expertise was in festival, event deployment and crowd management.

In 2020 I was awarded Outstanding Young Security Professional of the Year at the OSPAs I then undertook crowd management responsibilities at the Liverpool Giants and LFC Parades deliveries and was promoted to Head of Events & Festivals in 2022.

This year I have started working towards an MBA from Lancaster University and have been awarded Women in Security’s Security Manager of the Year, and Outstanding Security Manager of the Year at the OSPAs.

I’ve also qualified for a Global OSPA in 2025 as a winner in the 2024 UK OSPAs

When FGH Security was founded, Peter’s ambition to create a better and more customer focused security industry. Over 20 years later, we remain true to our purpose of doing things better and keeping people safe We have amassed a highly experienced, innovative team of educators and subject matter experts to deliver unparalleled security solutions

We pride ourselves on having the best trained team, friendliest people and a scientific approach. We provide security services encompassing Events, Guarding, Door Supervision, Stewarding, and Street Patrols

We are the only security company to ever feature on The Sunday Times Top 100 Employers list and were recognised again in 2023 and 2024 as one of the 'Best Large Places to Work' in the UK We were also recognised as one of the ‘Glassdoor Top 50 Employers 2024’, based on reviews submitted to that site

CHAMPIONING FROM THE BEGINNING

I'm always proud to see our female team members working on the front-line, it's so important to have a balanced team, and supporting the women in our industry is high priority Having women in security gives reassurance to the community, especially female customers. Women can often have a calming effect and can use this to their advantage when resolving conflict

Women are incredible, and we need to continue to change stereotypes in this industry to allow more amazing women to showcase their skills and progress into the roles that match these. The overall perception of the industry can be a barrier. Many people associate the security industry with men, but when only 12% of licence holders are women it’s easy to see why

We need to do more to raise perceptions of what our industry does: to better help people understand what we do and to challenge stereotypes I think we as an industry need to campaign how our industry has positively impacted people everywhere

There are many things that still generally give our industry a bad name; WhatsApp groups, cash in hand jobs and lack of regulation more generally. There are budgetary pressures on buyers of security that continues to enable these people. We need to make sure we audit our own supply chains effectively and engage with leading trade organisations like the BSIA and the UKCMA to promote good practice

There are positives coming down the line; Martyn’s Law coming in is going to potentially expand our remit and the level of professionalism required for security roles and there may be business licencing ahead or some kind of increased oversight by the regulator at an organisational level We need to also be prepared for a greater integration of human and technological based security systems Through our brand promises of ‘A Scientific Approach’, I think FGH is already well set up for these changes. We will always embrace new ideas and ways of working to improve our customers’ experiences.

This is an industry where there are huge opportunities for individuals with growth mindsets who are keen to learn more and develop their skills You get out as much as you put in it

For those operating within the alarm signalling sector, embracing change isn’t merely something to consider - it’s critical. Adapting to the new landscape can allow companies to offer more resilient and dynamic solutions, meet escalating client demands, and ensure a secure future for all

The UK alarm signalling market is in the midst of a transformative era. Rapid advancements in technology, evolving threats, infrastructure overhauls, and the departure of legacy players are reshaping the landscape at an unprecedented pace. This market, known for its cautious but steady approach, is now experiencing a sea change so swift it can feel disorienting, with many in the field scrambling to keep up. But we need to switch the mind-set of those feeling overwhelmed and recognise that this actually presents huge opportunity for us all to innovate, expand, and redefine security for a modern world

Let’s explore the market’s journey so far, current waves of transformation, and the key innovations shaping the road ahead

ALARM SIGNALLING: A BRIEF HISTORY

The roots of alarm signalling stretch back to the 19th century, when telegraph systems first enabled remote alerts for emergency services By the 20th century, security alarm systems relied on hardwired connections to central monitoring stations via telephone lines. Over the decades, the industry evolved, moving from analogue systems to digital networks, all while staying steadfast in its mission: reliable, timely alerts to keep people and assets safe

We need to switch the mindset of those feeling overwhelmed and recognise that this actually presents a huge opportunity for us.

A significant leap arrived in the 1980s with the adoption of dual-tone multifrequency (DTMF) technology, which enabled faster and more reliable alarm signals. British Telecom (BT) then launched Redcare, utilising public switched telephone networks (PSTN)

and managed networks for secure signalling to alarm receiving centres.

The 1990s saw the launch of BT’s dualpath Redcare GSM, which used both the PSTN and the emerging GSM network, while CSL DualCom’s 1997 entry into the market pushed the dual-path approach even further Yet, despite these significant advancements, change largely occurred over a long period of time and at a comparatively slow pace…

In contrast, today’s alarm signalling industry is facing an accelerated shift. With digital transformation, significant shifts in communication infrastructure, and new market entrants, the sector is becoming unrecognisable compared to 10 years ago Those who can adapt quickly will flourish, while those who don’t respond risk being left behind Think Kodak or Nokia, both market leaders in their respective fields, who after failing to respond to evolving marketplaces suffered crippling falls from grace

EVOLVING SIGNALLING PROVIDERS AND OFFERINGS

TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES DRIVING MARKET GROWTH

Today’s alarm signalling technology is infused with Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities, artificial intelligence (AI), and soon, the power of 5G. These innovations are not just upgrades they are revolutionary, allowing the industry to reach new levels of effectiveness and sophistication.

Webway and Emizon (now part of CSL Group) introduced robust dual-path systems predominantly in the IP space and Ajax followed bringing flexible, cloudbased options, the market is seeing a swift transition from traditional analogue to high-speed digital systems Established panel manufacturers also stepped up enhancing their offerings with remote programming, cloud management, and mobile integration, allowing for greater adaptability and control.

Meanwhile, Redcare’s unexpected exit from the market has sent ripples through the industry, opening the door for other providers to meet the demand left by this long-time leader As digital infrastructure takes centre stage, both new entrants and established brands are poised to reshape the landscape.

TRANSITIONING TO DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE

One of the most pressing changes in the industry is the UK’s impending transition from copper-based PSTN lines to a fully digital communication network Scheduled for completion by 2027, this shift is a game-changer. While it may feel daunting for those accustomed to analogue systems, digital networks open up possibilities that analogue infrastructure simply can’t support

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), fibreoptic networks, and 5Gconnectivity allow for alarm systems to transmit signals faster, with greater security and fewer limitations. For businesses in alarm signalling, this digital shift isn’t just a necessity it’s an opportunity to offer upgraded, future-proof solutions that are faster, smarter, and more secure than ever before

IoT Integration: IoT enables an ecosystem where alarm systems communicate seamlessly with a range of smart devices Imagine a system that not only detects a security breach but also activates lighting, adjusts surveillance angles, and controls access points to secure a property in real time – its already here!

Artificial Intelligence: AI is reshaping alarm management by analysing data in real time, distinguishing genuine threats from false alarms. This technology dramatically reduces unnecessary labour, allows for faster, more accurate responses to actual incidents, a win for providers and consumers alike

5G Connectivity: With its low latency and high-speed data transfer, 5G connectivity will redefine the way alarm systems operate By enabling instant transmission of high-quality video and data, 5G allows for real-time monitoring and remote management like never before.

The shift to a fully digital network enables cutting-edge capabilities that will define the next generation of alarm signalling technology.

These technological advancements cater to a rising demand for smart, integrated security solutions Consumers now expect to monitor and control their alarm systems from anywhere, with real-time updates and the ability to analyse potential threats at the touch of a button. As a result, every player in the value chain - from installers to integrators and monitoring providers - is under pressure to offer more comprehensive, user-friendly, and cost-effective solutions The standard is higher, but so are the rewards

CATALYSTS FOR CHANGE

M O R E T H A N J U S T A J O B

As a UK & Ireland Account Manager for members G4S, Laura Njoku discusses how security as a career went from being a source of income to one of passion, continuous learning and growth.

I've been in the security industry since December 2016, initially joining after completing my university placement, at a time when I was exploring my next steps I started with a position as a Steward in event security, which introduced me to the dynamic and essential nature of the security field What began as a way to gain work and income, quickly became a passion, as I realised how much impact professional security has in safeguarding people and assets, which strongly aligned with me From that point, my journey in the industry has been one of continuous learning and growth

My first few years as a security professional were challenging, due to long days, hours of standing, and unpredictable weather conditions However, as I built my network and connected with professionals from other organisations, I gained valuable exposure

to different roles within the industry Thanks to my proactive approach and dedication to excellent service delivery, I quickly advanced to a Supervisor role.

When COVID-19 hit, events came to a halt, and work opportunities dried up But this led to an important turning point when I was offered a Security Manager position with G4S, which began my association with the company. From there, I transitioned to Operations Support Manager, where I gained deeper insight into operations management and found a real sense of fulfilment

After a year, though, I started to feel the need for more growth and new challenges. After discussions with my mentor and senior work colleagues, I was offered an Account Manager position covering the UK and Ireland Initially, I was hesitant due to imposter syndrome, but I ultimately took the leap - and it turned out to be a pivotal move which accelerated my career and credibility within the industry.

In my last role as an Account Manager (UK&I) I focused on ensuring seamless communication between the customer, internal teams, and security operations. What set us apart is our commitment to aligning customer needs with tailored, forward-thinking security solutions We don’t just meet expectations; we actively look for ways to enhance service delivery by identifying gaps and proposing practical, innovative solutions.

I realised how much impact professional security has in safeguarding people and assets, which strongly aligned with me. From that point, my journey has been one of continuous learning and growth.

For example, we consistently evaluate the contract’s performance to ensure it's evolving with the customer’s changing requirements, offering proactive improvements that drive long-term value and strengthen overall security outcomes.

RECOGNISING THE ROLE WOMEN PLAY IN OUR INDUSTRY

MORE THAN JUST A JOB

We are seeing an increase in more female leaders in the industry, but we need to do more as a sector to ensure that opportunities for more women to be recognised and promoted into roles that match their skillset. Exposure, first and foremost is crucial in driving change. Industry events are a powerful way to showcase the journeys and first-hand experiences of women in security, while also providing networking opportunities that can open doors to new roles Outreach could be executed within different establishments from schools, to business conferences for greater reach.

It’s also important to rethink how we approach recruitment and promotion In my opinion, tailoring marketing materials and having internal conversations with resourcing teams to highlight the value of soft skills in job descriptions can attract more diverse candidates. Encouraging internal referrals is another effective way to close the gender gap

Also, mentorship programs can play a critical role, where experienced professionals, both male and female guide women through career development, ensuring they have access to networks and growth opportunities - something which was a critical element in my journey BARRIERS

One significant barrier is the lack of flexible working conditions that accommodate different life stages, such as parental leave and caregiving responsibilities, without penalising career progression Many companies in the security sector have yet to fully embrace these practices, which can be discouraging for women looking to build long-term careers

Additionally, there’s a persistent stereotype that security is a maledominated field, particularly in leadership roles. When women don’t see themselves represented in these positions, it can create the perception that the path isn’t for them I experienced these doubts early in my career, but by staying curious, open to new opportunities, and consistently advocating for myself, I was able to challenge these misconceptions and climb the ladder.

It’s crucial for companies to actively highlight the successes of women in security, encouraging them to own and share their stories. This visibility can inspire others and show that security is where women can thrive and lead.

PERCEPTIONS, THREATS AND OPPORTUNITIES

There’s often a lack of public understanding about what professional security companies like G4S truly offer Security is typically associated with physical guarding, but the reality is far more complex G4S plays a critical role in risk management, crisis response and safeguarding assets but the public often overlooks the breadth of these services and the strategic value they provide to organisations

The industry needs to be more proactive in its communication, particularly with regard to highlighting the expertise and professionalism required to operate at a high level. This could include publicfacing campaigns or engaging with educational institutions to offer insights into career paths As we advance in the digital age, partnering with the media to showcase success stories and innovations via social media is also a powerful tool to shape perceptions.

The rise of unlicensed and untrained personnel poses a significant threat to the industry These individuals not only undermine the credibility, but also compromises the safety and effectiveness of security operations, which increases the risk to people, property and places exponentially The industry must strengthen licensing regulations and enforce them rigorously, ensuring that only qualified personnel are hired.

I’m a huge advocate for upskilling; companies should invest in continuous training to keep their workforce equipped for the challenges of AI, ensuring that technology supports not displaces human judgment and decisionmaking. Staying ahead of the curve, the industry can continue providing reliable, cutting-edge security solutions.

ADVICE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION

Work hard, cultivate a mindset of continuous learning and adaptability, and network The industry is incredibly diverse, encompassing everything from physical protection to risk analysis, so all aspiring officers should be open to acquiring new skills. Whilst certifications and qualifications are important, so is building strong communication and problem-solving skills, as they are key to thriving

Networking is essential; reach out to other professionals on LinkedIn, at industry events, and join associations to build you professional community. Finally, approach every challenge with resilience. Security professionals face tough situations daily, and those who rise in the ranks are those who show persistence, integrity, and a commitment to excellence With the right mindset and support, anyone can build a successful career in this industry.

PLEASED TO MEET YOU

Meet the latest member to join the BSIA and to become part of the Association family COMPILED BY BEN MOCKFORD

Meet Johan Gerber, Sales Manager at Identec Limited. They recently joined us as Principal members

All our products are approved by the necessary industry standards. We sell our own products and we don’t install any products ourselves

WHERE DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE BSIA AND WHY DID YOU JOIN?

I’ve known about the BSIA for many years and decided to join to increase our awareness to like minded companies, especially in the Access Control Industry

WHAT DOES YOUR COMPANY DO?

We manufacture Active RFID (Radiofrequency identification) products.

WHAT BENEFITS OF THE MEMBERSHIP ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO TAKING ADVANTAGE OF?

We are excited to network with existing members to see if we can find a way to promote our products.

WHAT CAN WE DO AS AN INDUSTRY TO ENCOURAGE MORE WOMEN INTO THE INDUSTRY?

Our security industry is very male dominated but we are seeing many women joining our industry. Even at engineering level. I am noticing more woman in director or senior management roles The more we see this happen the more we will see other women joining our industry. I think this is something that will happen naturally in the years to come.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT IN TERMS OF THE FUTURE?

Right now, our company is working on a new product that hopefully will be a game changer for us and for the rest of the industry. Expected to release in Q1-Q2 in 2025!

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO A START-UP COMPANY COMING INTO THE INDUSTRY?

It is not an easy industry at times I think any new start up should have at least 10 customers to call on immediately, customers they 100% believe will follow them and buy from them

They also need a good start up fund in place as they will find they might need to join (at a cost) a few associations that they need to be part of Be hungry and don’t employ anyone until you are at a point where you cannot handle the workload anymore. GUIDANCE

THE BACK PAGE INTERVIEW

Each quarter we interview a leading senior member of the BSIA membership on the current theme.

CAN YOU BRIEFLY DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE AT SECURITAS UK AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES?

As HR Director at Securitas UK, I lead the People function, overseeing a diverse team that includes HR professionals, Employee Relations, Business Partners, Recruitment, Learning and Development, Payroll & Benefits, and our Screening Compliance Team Additionally, I am a member of the Senior Leadership Team, working closely with our Country President, CFO, and CCO on the overall strategy and leadership of the business

WHAT INITIATIVES OR PROJECTS IN HR ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

I’m particularly proud of our digital transformation in recruitment, HR administration, and background screening, all designed to streamline operations and improve efficiency More recently, I’m excited about our strides toward creating a truly inclusive workplace.

This includes launching employee networks, our peer-to-peer Belonging Champions, and our Accelerator Programme for underrepresented leaders Additionally, we've introduced market-leading maternity pay and benefits, demonstrating our commitment to our people.

Wellbeing is another area where we’ve made significant investments. From training over 100 Mental Health First Aiders to offering financial advice, physical wellness support, and embedding Maximus, we aim to support our employees holistically. We've even trained Level 2 Smoking Cessation Advisors with the authority to prescribe NHS tools

Our Learning & Development efforts have also been transformative In just five years, we've expanded from minimal training options to offering accredited leadership development programmes and over 200 e-learning courses Creating a learning culture is now central to our employee engagement strategy

HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE AS A WOMAN IN HR LEADERSHIP?

For years, I was the only woman on the Senior Leadership Team, working alongside ten men In addition, I am neurodivergent, which has given me a unique perspective.

Initially, it was challenging to find my voice in the room, but thanks to a supportive manager and respectful colleagues, I’ve been able to contribute meaningfully With our new Country President, I’m no longer the only woman in the leadership team, which marks an exciting new chapter for us

ARE THERE ANY GENDER-FOCUSED DIVERSITY INITIATIVES YOU LEAD OR SUPPORT?

I’ve been heavily involved in setting up and supporting our employee networks. I’m also a strong advocate of our Accelerator Programme Currently, I’m working on initiatives to support women going through menopause and to improve work-life balance, with a focus on attracting more women into the security industry and Securitas specifically

Thanks to a supportive manager and respectful colleagues, I’ve been able to contribute meaningfully. With our new Country President, I’m no longer the only woman in the leadership team, marking an exciting new chapter for us.

WHAT’S BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR CAREER AT SECURITAS?

Over my nine years at Securitas, I’ve had the privilege of shaping our culture and employee experience I’ve been empowered to implement significant changes, from digitalising our processes to fostering an inclusive environment. I’ve also had the opportunity to work with excellent managers, mentors, and teams, which has been instrumental in my personal and professional growth.

HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED AND CONTINUE GROWING N YOUR ROLE?

I’m naturally curious, so I’m always looking for new ways to innovate I regularly attend webinars and conferences to stay updated on industry trends and best practices, which I then assess for applicability to our business Collaboration is key, and I work closely with internal teams to continuously improve and elevate our approach

WHAT KEY HR TRENDS OR CHALLENGES DO YOU SEE AFFECTING THE SECURITY SECTOR?

Attracting more women and individuals with disabilities to the security sector remains a challenge, as does supporting the career progression of people of colour. Additionally, the diminishing pool of licensed security personnel is a pressing issue, as other industries offer competitive pay without requiring the same level of training, licensing, and screening.

There’s also a need to professionalise the security officer role, highlighting the different levels and opportunities for career progression, from entry-level positions to senior risk advisors The introduction of Martin’s Law will bring welcome changes, but there is still uncertainty about how it will be managed from a regulatory perspective

HOW DO YOU APPROACH WORK-LIFE BALANCE IN A DEMAND NG LEADERSHIP ROLE?

Maintaining work-life balance can be challenging, but I’ve found that regular exercise, particularly running, is crucial for my mental health. Running provides me with time to reflect and decompress, and as a single mother, it’s often the only time in the day that’s just for me

This positive impact to my mental wellbeing led me to co-create a Community Interest Company with two industry colleagues to share these benefits with others in our field.

I also make the most of my travel time by listening to music and podcasts, ensuring I carve out moments for myself, free from work-related calls
