The new year approaches with a cautionary note as the Government reacts to the latest threats in the shape of Omicron, as COVID-19 continues its onslaught across the fabric of our personal and business activities. The industry will continue its drive on returning to business as it was almost two years ago, albeit with one eye over its shoulder as we make sense of how the current situation may affect the sector over the long-term. Despite the impact of COVID-19 the professional security industry sector remains robust in its performance, but we must remain primed and prepared whilst we all look forward to some semblance of normality in the coming months.

The Association finishes strong at the end of 2021, seeing growth in membership and a 95% membership retention rate resulting in the association being in a healthy financial position. As a result of this positive performance we have been able to invest back into the association, with the creation of our Special Project Fund - designed to fuel member-led initiatives, driven by our sections - with our most recent project being the re-issue of an updated version of our popular The Picture is Not Clear CCTV camera report, which is currently being developed. We are also pleased to announce some key appointments that will play a crucial role in consolidating and growing our position in the sector. The new appointments are James Gribben, Chief Commercial Officer, and Mandy Miller, Senior Administration Officer who will both be taking up their roles in the New Year.

The last quarter of the year also saw the announcement of our former Chair and SEM’s Section Chair, Dame Julie Kenny DBE DL taking up the position as Chair of the Security and Resilience Industry Suppliers Community (RISC), taking over from Sir Kevin Tebbit in January 2022. Julie's commitment to the BSIA and the wider security sector has truly influenced the landscape of our industry, and her strategic expertise and extensive knowledge of the public, private and voluntary sectors make her a perfect fit for such an important role.

On behalf of myself and the BSIA staff, I would like to thank you all for your continued support and engagement with the Association over the last 12 months, and wish you the very best for 2022.

Dame Julie Kenny elected to serve as Chair of RISC Former BSIA Chair Dame Julie Kenny DBE DL has been elected as Chair of the UK’s Security and Resilience Industry Suppliers Community (RISC). Taking over from Sir Kevin Tebbit, Julie will commence her role in January 2022.

Julie, Chair of the Association between 2010-12 and the Security Equipment Manufacturers section twice between 1998 and 2004, started her career in litigation before turning to manufacturing, founding BSIA members Pyronix Limited in 1986, which is now a multi-million pound global organisation.

Mike Reddington, Chief Executive, BSIA, said: “The Association is delighted that Dame Julie has been elected to be the Chair of RISC. Her commitment to the BSIA and the wider security sector has truly influenced the landscape of our industry, and her strategic expertise and extensive knowledge of the public, private and voluntary sectors make her a perfect fit for such an important role.”

Industry-first code of practice for security fogging released The BSIA has launched its latest code of practice, an industryfirst for security fogging. Security Fog Systems: Installations, Commissioning and Maintenance - code of practice, is the first of its kind intending to support the design, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of security fog systems conforming to EN 50131-8, as well as to serve as practical aid to mitigate risks and reach operational requirements.

Carl Gibbard, Vice Chair of the BSIA’s Security Equipment Manufacturers section, said: “I am pleased that the BSIA have worked with members and insurance companies to deliver a code of practice which closes a gap in the standards arena, can mitigate risks, and demonstrate the working ability of the professional industry who produce quality products “Simple installation of an EN 50131-8 security fog device is not enough to consider all factors which may influence the effective operation of a system. This becomes apparent when security fog systems need to perform differently in various scenarios including hold up situations or burglaries.”

Corps Security rejoins the Association Corps Security has rejoined the BSIA. In November, Chief Executive Mike Reddington presented Corps CEO Mike Bullock with a membership certificate at Corps’ London head office.

In returning to the fold, Mike Bullock, CEO, Corps Security, said: “We are delighted to be rejoining the BSIA, the voice of the professional security industry. BSIA membership is a symbol of quality and professionalism in the security industry and it’s therefore fitting that Corps is represented. As a social enterprise, we support and encourage excellence among our people and BSIA membership will support us in that drive.”

Skills for Security partner with TIS academy to train apprentices The BSIA’s training arm, Skills for Security (SfS) has partnered with TIS Academy by agreeing to train their apprentices.

TIS Academy, powered by Skills for Security, will be enrolling twenty new apprentices on a bespoke apprenticeship initiative. Total Integrated Solutions (TIS) will use SfS technical training experience to deliver the apprenticeship training at TIS head office in Mansfield, allowing TIS to grow, nurture and create their own engineers of tomorrow.

TIS is an independent systems integrator, specialising in driving digital transformation and integration across the life safety, security and communications industry.

James Twigg, CEO, TIS said: “We are absolutely delighted to be working with Skills for Security on the launch of our new Academy. The Academy is a critical part of our future strategy and it is essential that we partner with the best in order to produce the next generation of leading engineers. ”

BSIA appoints new Chief Commercial Officer The BSIA has appointed James Gribben as its Chief Commercial Officer.

James joins the Association bringing 20 years of commercial experience in the fire and security industry, specialising in leading sales and marketing operations. James has a strong track record in aligning marketing strategy with sales objectives for companies such as SMC, Stanley Security and JCI. His prime responsibility will be to drive membership retention and accelerate membership growth, working closely with the Communications and Membership teams.

James is based in the North West and takes up his post in January.

Winners of Engineers of Tomorrow announced The winners of the Engineers of Tomorrow Fire Alarm Competition were announced at the Fire & Security Excellence Awards in November.

Securitas song for the homeless Our members Securitas UK have commissioned a song, Ascending, which was launched on 6 December to raise money for the Homeless Shelter in Birmingham, a charity very close to their hearts where volunteers from the organisation regularly give up their evenings to volunteer.

Over Christmas, more than 200,000 families and individuals in England alone will have experienced the worst forms of homelessness. Many people already living with financial pressures made worse by the coronavirus pandemic have been pushed over the brink into homelessness and are finding themselves sleeping on the streets.

You can support them in making a small difference to the homeless in Birmingham, by donating at their Just Giving page.

OCS Group secure contract for 2022 Commonwealth Games OCS Group UK has been selected to provide security services for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

OCS will provide services including screening, vehicle search, patrols and response teams at Alexander Stadium, Sandwell Aquatics Centre, NEC campus hotels and the Games Family Hotel Accommodation. Over 1,100 OCS colleagues – all SIA licenced and extensively trained – will help to keep Birmingham 2022 safe.

BSIA members feature in 2022's OSPAs finalist list The finalists for 2022's The Outstanding Security Performance Awards (OSPAs) have been announced and we are excited to see that eleven BSIA members and the ECHO (Electronic Call Handling Operations) project have been shortlisted!

As we move into year two of the UK transition there is a vast amount of work being undertaken by the BSIA to ensure our governing standards, originally developed in conjunction with the EU, are adapted appropriately to ensure adherence is as straight forward as possible for security businesses. This work will evidently allow a smoother trading process between the UK and EU. The ongoing financial impact of the pandemic is expected to be seen in 2022, as the furlough scheme ends in the second half of 2021 and the new year will shine a light on how well businesses are coping. Manufacturers will have to prepare for a change to their CE marking to include UKCA: despite the BSIA lobbying for and receiving an extension this will still come at a cost. Albeit on a positive note, BSIA members across multiple industry sectors are seeing an industry with work levels similar to pre-pandemic periods. So the future for our sector is looking more positive.

In terms of key trends, cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automated Facial Recognition (AFR) are hot topics which are continuously talked about in the mainstream media. Our recent AFR guide on the ethical and legal usage of this technology is now visible on the Gov UK homepage and is now being developed into a BSI code of practice.

With so much transformation taking place in our industry, members of the BSIA and businesses across the security sector are ideally positioned to engage in the initiatives taking place, speaking up with their support and/or opinions. Through this support the BSIA can ensure they represent the full breadth of the industry’s requirements which will help shape and develop the professional security industry of the future.

PROTECTING OUR COURIERS SaferCash, the Intelligence Initiative for Cash & Valuables in Transit (CViT) members has been working with the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) to review the guidance on police procedures for dealing with CViT vehicles involved in non-criminal road traffic Incidents.
