CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S FORWARD We find ourselves in the midst of the digital age and a time of positive social change, an era of great yet challenging expectation - progressive, innovative, determining; but even with societal and technological advances, mental wellbeing can often still be seen as something we would rather not talk about. As industry, agencies and government tackles at pace this existential problem, we can see the roots of progress, but it is still something many people would rather not, or are simply unable, to express as a concern. It is vital that these conversations take place, and as individuals and companies alike, the industry must continue this journey. Some fantastic initiatives, driven by key people are very much in evidence, as outlined by our members in our new BSIA Connect; from better working conditions, to listening schemes, to social media initiatives. There are also charities and services designed for our industry, such as Mates in Mind and Security Minds Matters, and many companies are doing everything they can to create a happier workforce. Any progress we make is a step towards tackling the very damaging and often traumatic spectre of mental distress. Regardless of its roots, it is our duty first as people and as an industry to ensure we are there for our colleagues. No conversation about wellbeing is trivial; looking after each other and simply talking has the potential to alleviate a situation from potentially devastating consequences.

launches AMember pioneering approach INNOVATIVE WORK-LIFE INTEGRATION To address the pressing concerns of employee well-being in our industry, we've embarked on a pioneering journey. One of the most impactful changes we’ve implemented to challenge the status quo is the introduction of a four-day compressed workweek – noting our role in the industry as a Principal Contractor designer, installer, integrator). In this innovative approach, we entrust our team with the gift of time. Time to pursue their passions, to mend and nurture relationships, to embark on new ventures, or to simply revel in the joy of being. This gift of time is not only about achieving a better work-life balance but also nurturing well-being in mind and spirit.

The impact of this change has been profound. A workforce with more time to focus on their well-being, family, and personal passions is not only more productive but also more creative and satisfied. By promoting a healthier work-life integration, we have taken a significant step towards addressing the well-being crisis that plagues the security industry. In place for around 6 months our pivotal data is startling. At time of writing, 88% of our workforce claimed to be happier people following its implementation, which in turn led to nearly 50% of our workforce experiencing

DEDICATED WELLBEING:DEDICATED TEAMS

management, we have introduced a number of initiatives which are aimed at creating a working environment where employees’ mental health and wellbeing is a primary concern. Our new hybrid working scheme for example, where employees enjoy a combination of working from home and being office based, has been introduced to not only aid with productivity and creativity but also to help build a stronger team bond and remove the

engagement events, the first of which took place in the summer at our two head office locations where we hosted team building activities and provided refreshments for employees. This has around Halloween. All office based staff were encouraged to come as their scariest selves and take part in a number of events arranged across multiple sites. Fantastic engagement from all employees resulted in a real feeling of togetherness which has been proven to have a positive impact when it comes to our overall mental wellbeing.

HEALTHY MIND HEALTHY BODY Of course a healthy mind is helped considerably if we have a healthy body too. As such, we have teamed up with a local health club in order to offer employees in our Hitchin office the option of joining a free program of yoga classes or fitness sessions (or both for the more energetic!). These classes are offered to encourage all employees to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to take a little bit of time to make sure they are focusing on their own well-being. So far the take-up has been phenomenal.

Being in the office means employees can make use of our newly arranged Wellness Room, where individuals are welcome to take a break in a peaceful environment.

Member launches DEDICATED WELLBEING: DEDICATED TEAMS EDITORIAL This proves to be very useful when coordinating half term and school holidays which can often prove to be a stressful experience for parents with kids at school. It is an initiative which shows appreciation to the fact that a recharge is often necessary for an employee to remain happy, both at work and at home. In May of this year, we ran a number of events to align with Mental Health Awareness Week. We hosted a tea morning where colleagues were encouraged to discuss non work topics with each other, as well as streaming a webinar reminding all employees of the benefits and services available to them. We also had a resounding success with our day dedicated specifically to getting outdoors and in to nature.

“The wellbeing of our staff at dormakaba has always been a key focus for us. We are delighted with the measures put in place recently which we feel empowers our employees to openly discuss any issues they may be experiencing and how they can seek help. Moving forward in to 2024, all of our members mental well-being will continue to be a priority for us.” This could have taken the shape of a walk at lunchtime, making a work call whilst outside, or simply taking five minutes out of the day to visit your garden. It was an idea designed to remind everyone that it is important to have regular breaks and to be mindful of mental well-being throughout the day. We finished the week with an all staff town hall where the focus was on how to maintain good mental health, and what options are available should someone be struggling.

RUNNING AND TALKING Looking to the future, we have already earmarked May 2024 as a whole month dedicated to raising awareness on the importance of good mental wellbeing. We are looking at arranging a 5km run for employees to take part in and will encourage sponsorship with all collections going to our chosen mental health charity. We are also hosting an event with a guest speaker to visit one of our sites and discuss their battles with mental health, and how they came through it. All of our events and initiatives will be found on our social media channels throughout the year as we aim to continually raise awareness on the importance of mental wellbeing. On the subject of how dormakaba prioritises the mental well-being of its employees, our Senior Vice President Paul Wright says; “The wellbeing of our staff at dormakaba has always been a key focus for us. We are delighted with the measures put in place recently which we feel empowers our employees to openly discuss any issues they may be experiencing and how they can seek help. Moving forward in to 2024, all of our members mental wellbeing will continue to be a priority for us.”

Raise awareness Continue to educate your team and peers about the importance of mental health, its challenges, and the resources available for support.

“It's crucial for me to emphasize the importance of raising awareness and keeping mental health at the forefront of our agenda. In fact, our recent toolbox talk was centered around suicide prevention on the railway. I ask all men who are struggling with issues that affect their mental health to seek professional help and, equally importantly, to reach out to someone they trust and discuss their worries or challenges. Talking about your struggles can make a significant difference and potentially save a life.”

BSIA CONTRIBUTE TO HOME OFFICE CAREERS BROCHURE The BSIA was involved in the creation of the Home Office's Find Your Future in Security brochure, which has just been released. It was produced by the Security and Resilience Growth Partnership (SRGP), following on from research carried out by the Joint Security and Resilience Centre (JSaRC) which revealed security businesses are marginally more likely to report gaps in the skills of their workers than other businesses. Aimed at young individuals (aged between 14-24), it highlights some of the excellent career pathways and puts a spotlight on numerous security-related roles, including their potential earnings and clearly states the benefits of working in the security industry. You can get your copy from the Home Office website.
