The Wars of the Roses are over.

Henry Tudor has defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth and left behind his only living son, Henry VIII to rule England.

Henry married his brother’s widow, the Spanish Princess, Katherine of Aragon, but after twenty happy years the marriage yielded only one surviving child. A girl. Mary.

In his desperate desire for a son, Henry broke with the Pope, divorced his wife, married Anne Boleyn and established a new Church of England. But again, this marriage produced only one surviving child. A girl. Elizabeth.

Henry would need to remarry. So he had Anne arrested on trumped up charges of treason, adultery and incest, resulting in her execution, freeing Henry to marry his third wife, the Protestant Jane Seymour. Jane gave Henry his much longed for son, Edward, but died from complications in childbirth.

He would marry three more times, but he would father no more children, and died aged 55. As his only male heir, the nine year old, Edward became King upon his father’s death. Supported by his new Council and his Protestant sister Elizabeth, Edward set about reforming the Church in England and forcefully severing ties with the Roman Catholic Church. History however, had other plans. Edward died six years later, leaving the country, as stated in his father’s will, to his Catholic sister, Mary.

While the war between the White Rose and the Red may be over, England was gearing up for a new battle. This time, it’s a battle of faith.

From The Director:

Thank you for supporting the company tonight and more specifically, for continuing to support our original works. Obviously, I have a fascination with English Queens (they were the glass ceiling smashers of their day) and Queen Mary is someone I’ve always felt was much maligned in the history books. From the moment I met Rachel, I have dreamed of her playing a young Elizabeth I and have long looked for the right script that we could work on together. Eventually, I realised that the play I was looking for wasn’t something I could find, it was something I would have to write. So that’s what I did.

I am humbled to be able to share Mary’s story with you and in particular explore her relationship with her mother, her father and younger sister, Elizabeth. I hope to evoke compassion for a woman who struggled to do the right thing, under immense pressure, and all whilst dealing with significant psychological problems that the Tudor world was not equipped to understand or show compassion.

To everyone at TheatreiNQ, your support and faith in me is, as always, so humbling. To come along on this journey from the beginning - before there was even a script! Every step of the way, this team have fully invested 100% in telling Mary’s story and I am so grateful to each and every one of you. TheatreiNQ invests time and resources into the development of fresh unique theatrical writing. This includes original adaptations of classic works and brand new stories.

TheatreiNQ Originals are works that have been developed exclusively through the colloboration of TheatreiNQ’s Artistic Director, Terri Brabon, and her work with our 40 strong ensemble. This ensemble includes actors, writers, designers, production and technicians.
