The once-famed musician, Antonio Salieri, spends his last days in solitude, shunning society, preferring the company of the ghosts of time gone by. Alone, he finds comfort in sharing his story with you, the ghosts of the future.
His story is one of faith, a quest for perfection and a deal made with God.
When Salieri hears the music of a young upstart named Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, he fears his maker is making a mockery of him. Thus begins his war with Godand Mozart is the battleground.
But can the ageing Salieri’s story be believed?

I can hardly believe that TheatreiNQ is 15 years old. What a ride it has been. I am so grateful to the management and staff of the Townsville Civic Theatre for inviting us to celebrate this milestone with another milestone - our first mainstage production at the Civic Theatre AND the Townsville Premiere of Peter Shaffer’s world-renowned masterpiece, AMADEUS. Additionally, this event has afforded the company an exciting opportunity to work alongside the talents of our friends at the Barrier Reef Orchestra and the Townsville Choral Society Choir. I thank both organisations for their encouragement and enthusiasm for this project. We hope to collaborate more in the future. Running an independent theatre company in regional North Queensland is not an easy task. I am so grateful to the community for supporting our work, to our fearlessly loyal audience and to every actor and technician who we have had the pleasure of working with. The past 15 years have been the most challenging, frustrating, exhilarating and ultimately, most rewarding years of my career. And I hope the legacy of what we have built will only grow stronger in the future.

AMADEUS is a wonderful exploration of the experience of music. How music unexplainably makes us feel. It’s about the relentless pursuit of perfection and the art of storytelling. We need stories to understand the very nature of being human. We are the only creatures that do that - that gather together to share stories, in the hope that we will expand our understanding of what it actually means to be human. We need stories now more than ever. We need connection outside of our experience. We need stories and storytellers. Thank you for continuing this legacy tonight and for listening to this story.
