As You Like It was the first Shakespeare play I ever directed by myself – twenty-one years ago – with Jean-Pierre honouring me by playing the melancholy “Jaques”. Revisiting this script has been way more fun than I thought it would be. Firstly because I’m older now – I see the world and the worlds within this play very differently. This is the real magic of Shakespeare – his work is like a mirrorball, reflecting ideas and themes back at you differently at different times of your life. This time around, I relished in the dynamics of the City vs Country and the chance to celebrate the nostalgia and freedom of my own childhood growing up in the small farming community of Rita Island. Both the City and the Country in our play, are hyper-stylised, picture-book interpretations of my feelings of both.

I am privileged to share the stage with two members of my OG Cast –John Goodson & Arminelle Fleming, with a third, Kellie Esling, assisting behind the scenes. Memories from 2003 flow fondly alongside the excitement of watching the next generation create their own memories with this play; I can only hope that they will still be creating theatre together 21 years in the future.

And lastly, I would like to dedicate this season of Shakespeare Under the Stars to our dear friend, John Lorraway. John was Jean-Pierre’s right-hand man establishing this event. He dug trenches, painted sets, built magical tables, erected seating, rigged lights, dealt with JP’s mood swings, whatever needed to be done, he did it –and all with compassion and love.

Thank you John – you will forever be a part of the legacy that is Shakespeare Under the Stars.
