From The Director:

Thank you for supporting the company tonight and more specifically, for continuing to support our original works. Obviously, I have a fascination with English Queens (they were the glass ceiling smashers of their day) and Queen Mary is someone I’ve always felt was much maligned in the history books. From the moment I met Rachel, I have dreamed of her playing a young Elizabeth I and have long looked for the right script that we could work on together. Eventually, I realised that the play I was looking for wasn’t something I could find, it was something I would have to write. So that’s what I did.

I am humbled to be able to share Mary’s story with you and in particular explore her relationship with her mother, her father and younger sister, Elizabeth. I hope to evoke compassion for a woman who struggled to do the right thing, under immense pressure, and all whilst dealing with significant psychological problems that the Tudor world was not equipped to understand or show compassion.

To everyone at TheatreiNQ, your support and faith in me is, as always, so humbling. To come along on this journey from the beginning - before there was even a script! Every step of the way, this team have fully invested 100% in telling Mary’s story and I am so grateful to each and every one of you. Thank you to Rachel for her commitment and sensitivity to this project. Every show I work on is special but this one has sprinkled a little magic.
