This reminds me of a day at the National University of Science And Technology (NUST), Zimbabwe in 2012 where I was studying Publishing.

o me, music is amazing. Music is spiritual and music is refreshing! It has developed from just making sound with the throat to making sounds and melodies with different kinds of instruments. Nowa days music is being created on computers. Different universities offer music business studies.

On a personal level, I love music so much and I have recorded more than 50 songs. I have created my own genre called Christian Musical Poetry, which is a combination of poetry, music, divinity, and spirituality. I sing in Shona, English and sometimes in tongues. In Zimbabwe, my music has not made its way to the radio stations. However, I have received some airplay on television, especially on my song Chidhori Untold. I have many people (family, friends and WhatsApp groups) who love my music so much. They encourage and inspire me to go on and on doing what I love most. Many thanks to my family; Dr Shingi, Overseer Chikepe, Chioneso Elite Chikepe and my nephew, Joel Anotidaishe Chikepe. With all this love and support and my almost 10 years of experience in the music industry, I am inspired to lookout for good music, outstanding

One of my lecturers by the name Mrs N. Nyamakura, came to the class and asked what we wanted to do with our degrees as we were about to graduate. My classmates mentioned different things although the theme was the same, “Book publishing”. As for me, I thought deep about the question and when it was my turn, I said, “I want to be a Music publisher.”

The class was shocked at hearing my answer and one of them asked how I was going to make money as a music publisher and my answer was, “I am not sure, but being a music publisher will be great.” The lecturer came to my rescue and mentioned that in developed countries music publishing is a very successful industry." Research more about it and I am sure you will get your niche out of it," - these were her last few words to me. I banked this conversation in my heart and I moved on with life.

My next step is to slowly start publishing music from

The Bible says, “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin,” Zechariah 4:10. Indeed, when God says “Yes,” no one can say, “No.”

ThisCollection.brought joy to my heart, because people were able to hear good music from new, underrated and prominent artists including those who had or were about to give up on Latermusic.on,after a year or so, I remembered my conversation with Mrs N. Nyamakura and my fellow publishers and I got inspired to think more about how to upgrade the music project? Long story short, I signed a music deal with the Amuse Music Distribution Company in Sweden and The Sailors Music Collection is now a music label. To kick start the project, I published my own music this year. I have published three songs namely, ZiMunamato, Adam & Eve and Speak Through Us. I am extremely happy with the project because my music is now available in more than 249 countries and in more than 24 online music stores including Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music and Apple Music. This is an extremely big achievement for a person who would only send his music on WhatsApp (to sailors, friends and family) and would only manage to perform in different churches.

and underrated artists. The aim is to publish their works and spread their good love for art and music to the world at Thislarge.inspired me to start an ongoing music initiative called The Sailors Music Collection. With the creation of VaChikepe And The Hundred Sailors in 2016 and The Sailors Review in 2020, I realised I could not leave music behind. Hence, I started to look for good music (with the help of other sailors) and worked with a producer usually Standard Beatz and a designer Vincent Nyahasha, both from Zimbabwe. I began creating mixtapes and circulating them both on social media and in The Sailors Music

He reminds me of the identity crisis I went through as an artist when I was trying to discover myself. He made me realise that when God is in control of your life, all things work out for good and that when one passes through hard times, they are being hardened for a better tomorrow that will never be broken. The young man is outstanding, and I believe you will read his story in The Sailors Review one of these days. Why MbiraDzeNharira? I believe MbiraDzeNharira is the best mbira group from Africa and in the world. They are the custodians of the African culture, and their music is the ancient voice and wisdom from the ancient times. I intensively and extensively studied their music from 20082015. From my seven years’ experience of working as their manager and music scholar, I can say we need to catch and converse with this kind of ancient music whilst it is still hot and available. Below is the calendar of all the projects that have and will be published by The Sailors Music Collection in the Month of August: 1. Microscope: MJAYNORTON (5th of August, 2022)

My being is all from the core of you Oh my soul! Will you shuffle and rearrange the deck of cards That determine the course of my life in motion or stillness Oh my soul! Give me peace As I lie sleepless wondering about with no answers That I try to squeeze out of you Oh my soul! But you remain stock - still Not moved by sweat of blood Flowing from my brow And a weeping heart Oh my soul! Oh my soul! Are you of me from within me Talk to me if you belong with me I know you hear me before I even speak Oh my soul! Oh my soul! Life is like that I hear you say Should it be like this I ask? Oh my soul! As you frown upon my pleas like I am insane Not to understand all this That life happens with or without me

WORDS IN VERSE I

Maybe, just maybe You could shift my deck of cards To place my Kings next to my Queens Instead of the Jokers around my Kings and Queens It’s not too much to ask is it? Yes please, just a rearrangement In a simple row that will patch together The broken pieces to give me peace to the end Just to give me one more chance of truest happiness Was there ever happiness? You throw that muck back at me My turn to frown as I search within Only to find I don’t “knows“ written on walls Walls within me that squeeze the last hope I have clung on to Give me hope Oh my soul Let me live in hope Hope which I pray will not close me in As I hope to continue searching outside you Give me hope to hold on to Oh my soul Give me hope! The body and mind became weary I was only 22 when I realised my life wasn't going wellNow my soul, cried and groaned and wept. My mind said give up The heart said today is not tomorrow nor YesterdayAndmysoul ached and ached Suddenly God said, "it's time to move."

I became nearer to my tears

Every need would be fulfilled Still my soul cried even louder And I couldn't shut it up I then turned to cigarettes and alcohol

The new environment seemed to do Wonders for me The alcohol intake had reduced Even tried to quit smoking But just after 2 years of rest

16 VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 21.08.2022

Even as a child I longed for a Saviour As a teenager my soul became restless As the need of a Saviour grew stronger I went to witchdoctors to appease my soul I fell for the wrong kinds of love At first I thought it was a father I looked for Then I thought, if only I had money

To numb the feelings of the Devoid heart In love I kept falling, as each man kept Resembling a Saviour But wasn't a Saviour The more it hurt and the more my soul Groaned, the more alcohol I consumed And more cigarettes I burned.

I would stumble and fall Get up, dust off and keep on I would knock at doors They would be slammed right in my face Love deserted me It became history Friends became scarce I became a stranger even to myself My soul then cried, groaned, wept, searched and restless 23rd of October 2020, On that very dark cold rainy day When all hope was lost to me When death began to smell sweet I had deepened my thoughts Till I Jesuscouldn'tourLord and Saviour was on my threshold, knocking I cried; "Yahweh!" This song was produced by Boss Ellaya (Kariba, Zimbabwe) and mastered by Mack Geary (Durham, USA). This is my interpretation of Jamaican Dancehall Music and ZimDancehall freestyling! This song is an empower ment of the weaker-self against the manipulative circumstances of life!

The cover of this song was inspired by Washington Duke’s life, especially the quotation below: “After a brief stint in a Federal prison, he was paroled and was sent by ship to New Bern, North Carolina, and from there, walked 134 miles (216 km) back to his homestead”.

ONE VOICE MORE MUSIC FET MUSIC: THE BEST MOST FUN CAREER

I have always wanted to share my story with the world, so this opportunity feels like I am talking to everyone. My birth name is Farai Moyo. I was born on the 7th of July 2002, grew up in Alaska, a small town in Zimbabwe, about 14 kilometres outside of Chinhoyi and went to Alaska Primary and Secondary School, where I started making music at the age of 14. Now I live in Chinhoyi. My friends used to call me Fatso and I changed the name to Fet, which became a name I chose for the world to call me by.

Although I am a Dancehall musician, I feel like I can make a song to suit any genre of music. However, for now I am doing Zimdancehall. It is the easiest genre for me. It is easy to create, as I feel I can express all my thoughts through it. So far I have not achieved a lot in my music career due to lack of sponsorship and popularity. It has been difficult to market my songs because of lack of funds. I believe this aspect of music is the greatest challenge for all upcoming musicians in Zimbabwe. For anyone wishing to succeed in the music industry, sponsorship for marketing would be the greatest help, so we as artists can take pride in our work. Personally, I would love the opportunity to have unlimited stage performances as well as have more inter views, so as to reach a larger market.

Some of my music is inspired by my own personal experiences. The song Ndichikura was inspired by how I grew up living with a stepmother after my mother passed away. Not all children are ill-treated by step-parents, but the way I see it, many are abused, taken advantage of and suffer in silence. Some are in situations worse than I explained in the song. There's a line that says, "ndaitomboshuwa Tenzi dai mandi tora." Here I was speaking about a situation many can relate to. Sometimes people in bad situations can view death as an option or solution to their problems. Many youths take their own lives for different reasons and one of them is ill-treatment at home at the hands of step-parents. They fail to find someone to confide in and find comfort, and as a result think they have no purpose in life. I managed to overcome my situation by finding solace in my neighbours. I was loyal, I never refused to run errands for people, and I was willing to listen when reprimanded. It finally became clear that I was a good child and everyone around me felt the need to assist me with food items and other necessities. Therefore, to anyone in the same situation right now I would like to say, prove your loyalty and be trustworthy so that when you seek help, people will be willing to assist because of your good record.

Facebook- Farai Moyo or Despicable Fet

When I chose the title for the song Denga rechi54, I wanted to prove how one feels when in love or when one feels loved by their partner. There is a crazy feeling one gets. You ask yourself what is going on between me and this person. You feel like you're like-minded or connected and the other person may make you feel comfortable enough to open up about all your worries. The love you feel makes all things seem possible. There are many languages in Zimbabwe. So, I chose to make use of two, Shona and Setswana, for diversity. Anyone who understands one of those languages can listen to and understand the song. It was also interesting for me because I learnt Setwana while making the song. Part of the lyrics of Dai ndine bhasikoro are, "Dai ndine bhasikoro ndichiganza." Here I wanted to show that anyone who owns something, is proud of it. The bicycle symbolises anything of value. I chose a bicycle to stress my point because it is much cheaper as compared to a car. To a youth, it is affordable and symbolizes the first step to wealth. The line that says, "makoso handitsvage" carries the message that having some thing of worth automatically attracts women without one having to hunt for them. Nowadays, women look at mate rial things a man possesses. There is a lot of peer pressure from friends to date wealthy men. They have to have something tangible to point to when they gossip and compare with their friends about the potential partner-to-be. However, when I sang the song I also meant that I would rather be so focussed on my "new bicycle" than spend my time looking for a woman (or women). If I had not chosen music as a career, I would have started a project. Unfor tunately, due to financial issues, I only managed to reach Ordinary level. To the young person(s) hoping to follow in my footsteps I would say, music is the best and most fun thing to do. When making music, one should be willing to listen to advice from other artists and learn from one's own mistakes. bookings and easy access to my music contact me on: WhatsApp number +263776199960

Peer into the heart of the soul a mere reservoir that holds our essential existence Its capacity is vastly unlimited unbounded by borders that define or deny a haven for the complexities that are embedded in its core Delve deeply into the center of the soul and let the mind open to discover that it hungers with an unquenchable thirst filling and voiding itself seamlessly while seeking that which will satisfy its yearnings In times of great adversity it resiliently rides the waves that rise even during a tempestuous storm or quietly quells itself upon the calming tides when in a place of peace Our souls are woven within the invisible crevices inside of us and wholeheartedly resonate the essence of who we really are PatriceBy I patsmith1101@verizon.netSmith

ARTIST LOUNGE I: GRACE CAVALIERI GRACE OF ALL TIME

My name is Grace Cavalieri and had a beautiful husband who left the world nine years ago. He was an aviator and then a metal sculptor of great works. We have four grown daughters, four grandchildren and a great grandson. I am very connected to their everyday lives, and all are a life force for me. I believe I am an artist because I like to make things that did not exist before, whether with language, color, or even food. Cooking is extremely creative. Some say art is a collaboration with the Divine. I only know that we collaborate with something outside of ourselves when we make something “new.” I call it My“energy.”lifehas been, let me say, had some achievements and in 2019, was another year where I was appointed a Poet Laureate. To each one appointed “Laureate,” this means something different. In my case, I take it as a mission to spread the word that poetry: heals; rinses off language; makes us slow down; allows us to appreciate nature and notice more; and makes us less lonely. Everyone is entitled to try a hand at writing, because each person has a story like no other. I also like to record poets and make them permanent- as a Poet Laureate project- and have broadcast and archived many Maryland poets in the past three years. in imaginations

I think I am an imaginer, because I believe in the invisible and that is where everything exists. We just have to pull it all down through us—in words and paint. So everyday I do: I write, or make a picture, all to stay connected to the invisible. That is where the comfort is.

It has been a journey and I can say, it has been good. A. R. Ammons (the poet) said, “If you are nothing, you can say and do anything.” I took this as a personal message. I have always felt I was an ordinary woman and, therefore nothing was at stake and I could write and paint what I wanted because it did not matter. I was not famous, or a celebrity; I was a wife and a mother (how common is that) so that entitled me to do whatever I wanted. I have had several poetry collections, and each has been inspired differently. All books are on AMAZON.COM. The titles usually come from poems’ titles within the book. Every book is different, but the usual number of pages is about 70. Some are more. I was into plays and staging of play readings for more than 50 years, that is, between 1966 and 2019. In 1966, (I was a Navy wife) my husband finally had shore duty where we could settle in one place. All my pent-up energy wanted to be expressed after many years in the house with small children while Ken was at sea. Lucky for me it was the “cultural revolution” and the world was scrambling for new ideas. I wrote a play for a contest and won, and with that encouragement and a welcoming stage, saw 10 more plays produced in ten years. I do not think those plays would work today. They were very much of a time and place in history. I met a New York City Director who encouraged me and my fulllength plays began under her staging and finally went elsewhere in the country. When you write a play, you have to turn it over to collaborators and not worry about it Diversity, I can say drives me. From poetry to play writing and having to be a founder of The Bunny and the Crocodile Press/ Forest Woods Media Productions in 1979. This small press began because there were so many good poets and so few publishing opportunities. We published dozens of poets and also fiction and novels. My daughter Cindy did the book designs for production and, as an artist, she was a great asset. Of course, she was patient too because poets are demanding about every comma and line break. The books are beautiful and we published the first works of some who have become lumi naries today. Those were the days before “print on demand.” We worked with a real printer and a real production company.

In 1976, I co-founded WPFW FM. I did this because I wanted poetry to be on-air— after teaching where I could only reach 20 in a classroom or 200 in a lecture hall. When I heard a new FM station was launched in Washington DC, I quit teaching and raised money for 2 years before the station went live. If you want something “find the money!” Poetry was finally on Prime Time to 200,000 listeners. After 20 years on regional radio, I took the program to the Library of Congress for national distribution. That marks 25 years at The Library: 45 on-air total. We now also circulate on Apple podcasts and websites. I have received more than twenty literary awards in my life as an artist. I can say that is possible because of four things: 1. One book at a time. 2. Giving up fear. 3. Willing to fail. 4. Keeping going.

My music career took off in 2012 with the release of my debut single Hello. I went on to release classics such as Zvekupenga (featuring Chashe) and Love and Laughter, to name a few. As a multi-disciplined instrumentalist, my journey toward music production was an inevitable one as I have co-produced some of my latest singles in collaboration with the seasoned, multi award winning music producer, mentor, and friend Anton AMorgan.producer’s job is to take the artist’s vision for a song from concept to reality. The producer is a collaborator who helps artists achieve their dream of expressing and sharing their art with the world in the most compelling way. My passion, zeal, and hunger to create a unique sound made me want to be a producer. A consistent pursuit toward excellence drives me to find innovative ways to stretch myself as a music producer. That means I engage other professional music producers, through collaborations, to add value to the production to lending their skills and expertise to my projects. In my case, I have worked with my good friend and producer Anton Morgan, who is the creative director at Twoam studios, in London. includes both producing and singing. I have collaborated with a number of fellow Zimbabwean artists and Zvekupenga is my most successful collaborative project to date. I can accredit its success to the balance of elements that make for any successful music project, which are: timing; innovation; collaboration; creativity; great lyrics; catchy hook; music business acumen; airplay; and divine favor. The song was written, produced and released in 2014. Chashe, Anton and I were in 3 different continents at the time (U.S.A, New Zealand and Zimbabwe, respectively). We exchanged ideas and large files over the internet (which was uncommon at the time). I had never met Chashe in person and neither had Anton. The song was an instant success upon release, spending 25 weeks at the top of the charts. It is a classic until the end of time. We all eventually met in person for the very first time in Zimbabwe when we were invited to perform on the global stage at one of the biggest International arts festival in the country in 2015. I am also a traveller and a braai master and my music has always been inspired by my life experiences. Travelling broadens my worldview as it gives me insight into other people’s stories and realities as I openly experience and listen to them. Braai is my way of processing my thoughts and coming with new song hooks and melo dies. It’s a different artist window that I look through to find inspiration. Being a braai master, just like producing or writing music, is a creative process, an artist form. I believe my music stands out because it has a unique sound that is compelling and relatable. It has influences of tradi tional and modern sounds: captivating melodies, dissonant harmony chants and compelling lyrics that define the music’s identity. I also believe there are still more great songs in me as I continue experiencing more of life. The dream is to live out my purpose of creating music that the world wants to hear. My new single, Clearwater is a song inspired by the love story of two distant souls that unexpectedly found in each other, what they didn’t know they needed.

Still on Clearwater, the lyrics, "water flowing through my veins", I used a simile to emphasize and describe the purity of a woman’s love in a more tangible and practical way. The painting created is a mental picture since LOVE can sometimes feel intangible. I have always been sensitive to what my audience wants and stayed on the course of the vision, hence the singles. However, having put out singles all these years, 2023 is the year I hope to release a full album and I am excited about that. I will release singles that will be part of that album before the end of the year, so that’s something for people to look forward to. This anthology is the first English volume compilation thought out and originated by the young and upcoming artists and poets coming together under the publisher vachikepe.blogspot.com social networking cruise ship of like-minded individuals in Africa, Zimbabwe. Promotion of the works of upcoming talented young artists emerging from Africa`s developing nations is the main reason behind the existence of the brand name VaChikepe: The Poet. The young people coming up together have through time had the opportunity to organize themselves and be creative in various artistry areas that not only include writing and poetry but music, fine art and sculpture as well. Among other things, publishing written works to the world at large has been an endeavour that this very first anthology volume, to come from a united stable, has made a reality. To these inspired artists, each coming and passing day has served to be for sharpening writing skills and motivating one another to keep surging forward towards greatness with a lot of faith. The compilation is, therefore, to a greater extent unedited to maintain originality and each writer’s style, and will serve as a lasting reminder of how from humble beginnings thoughts and raw talent were exhibited with conviction and self-motivation to help inform and change or shape the world positively through poetry. Emotional Evolution: Thoughts by Pikitayi by Angela Pikitayi Rugara (Author)

Through the journey of life, I aspired for success in the jungle of politics, economics and technology. Having walked that path I retired from formal employment to embark on a new adventure in art. Unbeknown to me that was where my passion was buried all along. I have never been afraid of failing, but always love to try out new things that rouse my passion. So I decided to write poetry in the hope of capturing lives and the feelings therein. Is it not humanity’s deepest need to know that we are all connected? This gathered record of poems seeks to show emotional evolution experienced, not only by the seeker of art but by a stranger walking alone; the friend who misses; and the mother who believed she was unseen. The greatest intent of this work being: It’s okay for one to express themselves as they feel. If you cannot talk then write. If you cannot fight for those in pain then speak for them. In my culture, we are often very private about how we feel. The natural answer when someone asks how we are is “Fine or okay.” These two words hide a lot of unexpressed emotions as people often give answers to one of those words with a smile. I have seen smiles with sad eyes. As you read on I hope you find yourself and others in these poems. Everything we do in life springs forth from a source of inspiration and I would not make myself an exception. I was inspired to write by Mr Giles Kuimba’s book, Tambaoga Mwanangu, which I read when I was doing my Ordinary Level in 2014. At that time, writing was something interesting to me, although it was not profitable.

Prosper Njeke is a young man who grew up in Muzarabani in Murota Village but now lives in Harare, Kuwadzana 2. He went to Keche and Chadereka Primary schools in Muzarabani then did his secondary education up to A-Level at Gevstein Park College in Tynwald South, Harare. Now he is studying for a Bachelor of Social Work Honours Degree at Midlands State University. So far I have managed to publish 3 novels namely, Dura, Munongonzwa Imi and Mahedheni which I co-authored with Joseph Marawu. Moreso, I featured in a number of poetry anthologies, like Nduri DzeNduri, Chitubu and in two short story anthologies namely Hausundi and Gangaidzanwa. If you check on my profile, especially on Twitter, you’ll understand, writing is like breathing to me. It means writing is my passion, therefore whether I get profit or not, I will always write. The statement emanated from the publication of a poetry anthology Writing is a passion

I have collaborated in different anthologies and, yes, whenever people are in a group, conflicts arise. But in Nduri DzeNduri, I worked with focused and mature poets. The likes of: Abel Mauchi; Tinashe Muchuri; Biggie Chiranga; Oscar Gwiriri; Simbarashe Kavenga; Jameson Tabeni; Tonderayi Matema; Simbarashe Chirikure; Norlan Makwarimba; Simbarashe Jongwe; and others who understand the importance of coming up with a good work of art, therefore we had no disagreements. Nevertheless, we had new young, up-and-coming poets like: Rosemary Abigail Maseko; Mutsawashe Mazai; Munashe Dhliwayo; Shepherd Chidima; to mention a few, but they were all committed to the project and everyone was respectful to each individual member, hence, no conflicts. I have learnt that poets should unite and treat everyone with respect regardless of their age or gender so as to create rapport amongst themselves. Different writers, write in different languages. Others write in more than one language and in my case, I only write in Shona. One issue that should

dedicated to me by various Zimbabwean poets in 2019, enti tled, "The Writer’s Birthday – Bhavhadhe reMunyori." As a young poet at that time, I felt so loved by fellow poets both published and some up-and-coming poets, who featured in the book. As far as I knew, there was no Zimbabwean writer who had celebrated a birthday in a writeful way like that, therefore I will always write. I’ve also been able to venture into short story and novel writing. Munongonzwa Imi is a short story I wrote and Dura is a novel. On Munongonzwa Imi, I was inspired by the introduction of ZUPCO buses into the transport industry in Zimbabwe, which were very cheap and also the challenges women encounter in their marriages. Dura, is an old world story. It was inspired by the way people lived back then during a time of witchcraft. During my writing process, I encountered financial constraints: like, the money to pay the editor, cover designer, illustrator and even the publisher. I learnt that coming up with a good book, needs the writer to take time on research, and engage with people who can proofread the work before submitting to a publisher.

be up for debate is whether English has greater impact over vernacular languages. What I can say is that English poetry has an impact on local readers to a greater extent. This is so because there are many different languages in Zimbabwe and not all individuals are able to read and understand all local languages. However, English is a universal language and the language of instruction in schools and can be understood by many local readers, hence an advantage. More needs to be done to promote writing in local languages in schools and society. People need to change their negative attitude towards local languages and culture by supporting writing of poetry and novels in vernacular Backlanguages.onthe inspiration story, locally, I am inspired by Norlan Makwarimba a.k.a “Chitopota” on written poems. His writing style is different from many other local poets. The way he describes an event, is just fantastic! I enjoyed his pieces published in Nduri DzeNduri and Mutaku nanzva weNhetembo. On spoken word, I draw my inspiration from Tinashe Muchuri. People in our country take poetry lightly and that has led the industry to not func tion well or to its full potential, especially written poetry. As a way of tackling the issue, artists should write or record educa tive pieces, tackling current issues so that readers and listeners will appreciate the importance of poetry in our daily lives. As a writer and a human-being, it is not wise to move without a vision and I’d say, I have my plans for the upcoming years. I see myself being among the best local writers. I’m not saying this just because I’ve been asked, no! I’m considering what I have achieved in this short period of time, and my plans for the future. In future I’m expecting to attract as many readers as possible and get all my books published and realise the profit I deserve. My words to fellow and upcoming artists is: "Let us continue writing, even if it seems unprofitable. The time to make profit will come. Do research, before you put your information in writing. Let us engage in collaborations with fellow writers or poets. Let us utilize social media as a way of marketing our literary works. Creating good relationships with other poets or writers is essential, in a writer’s life. Let us have book launches and even donate our books to some libraries. Let’s convert our poetry or novels into video or dramas as a way to attract as many followers as Topossible."gethold of me, my social media handles are as Facebookfollows:account; Prosper Njeke Facebook page; Prosper Njeke – writer Twitter; @Njekepropser TikTok;

To begin with, An Open Letter to God ' was written in 2020, during the first lockdown, in Uganda. To be honest, I hated the lockdown(s), because schools were closed obviously, and we had to adopt the e-learning method. With everything that was going on, I felt a need to turn to God. I am only human, and He is the Almighty being, hence I wanted to leave/ give everything to Him. In the above stated poem, there is a sense of seeking. Obviously, we all get to know God after being told

My name is Mildred Mutesi, a student of the English language and Literature in English. Currently, I am studying at Kyam bogo University in Uganda. I was born on the 21st of February 2002, in Uganda. I believe poetry is not just an art, but a home. Yes, poetry is home. It is my home, it welcomes me every time, during good and bad times.

about Him, maybe by a friend, preacher, through songs to mention but a few. However, we can also know God by seeking Him and building a personal relationship with Him, because salvation is personal. Or by associating with people who know Him best and engaging in different church activities. Knowing God is worthwhile, henceforth, yes, there are benefits to knowing God. This helps us become righteous beings, who vacate from sinful lives to righteous lives. Basically, it is worth it. Reading the Bible equips us with knowledge and information. God's promises to us his children, separate us from hopelessness. Like I said, the poem was written way back in 2020, I guess I was a child in the spiritual realm. When it came to the other poem I Wish I Could Erase It , the inspi ration came from an old best friend. It is after losing the friendship that I realised I can not do anything about it anymore. Therefore, I decided to keep the friendship as a memory, in form of a poem. This is my favourite poem (I miss him, LOL.) In the poem there is an aspect of having to make a decision and the result of having made one. Honestly, experience is the best teacher. Hence, we need to associate with people more often so as to learn the importance of decision making. I would say we make wrong decisions because of being naive and failing to look at things from a wider angle. I chose to use contrast in the poem because that is actually the reality of it. For example, the line: "I don't regret anything But I wail whenever I recall,'' comes with this feeling of, yes, whatever happened happened and I cannot turn back time, neither should I be in regret, because it brings back nothing. Those lines are a flashback, without strings attached. I appreciate every single moment that I spent with the old best friend, because experiences can be good and bad. He is my favourite mistake. Moving on is hard, but I would advise others

to genuinely appreciate every moment that happened with the person they are parting ways with. If possible, one should calm the storm before letting go. Always sit down and talk. It's worth it. But, if moving on without resolution is the only option, then darling, associate with other people who can understand. Yes, speak to someone, for a problem shared is a problem solved. Do not listen to sad songs, no, don't! Change the music genre and be happy. You only have one life! Society doesn't define us. We need to appreciate the fact that there are those moments when we are down, and we cannot escape them. Those are the moments when we are at our lowest and, our lowest, can turn out to be out greatest moments. Self-pity is like spilling your own milk, then later crying about it. It is pointless and irrelevant. The take home from these poems is that moving on is always an option and God is great. To anyone who wants to read or know more about my work, my email address is by

Some of my artworks are displayed on Paintingsph, available on Instagram as I advocate for the use of the creative arts as therapy in the management of neurophatic pain. Turning to creative arts helps one engage him/herself in worthwhile activities which stimulate his/her imagination and enhance creativity. It can help one relieve everyday stress and anxiety. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of people did resort to the arts as a hobby at first, and some eventually made it a business. As a visual arts ambassador, I have been creating sustainable materials to use in some of my paintings. In my Climate Change series, I used brown paperbags and egg carton trays as alternatives instead of using thick acrylics to create texture in my artworks. My paintings depict the ill effects of global warming on earth. I also joined Hitma Org that is based in Iraq and got involved as a volunteer in promoting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to help fight or reverse the effects of climate change. I believe that through my artworks, I can be an instrument to send a clear message to the world about the protection and preservation of mother nature. Honestly, my artworks have "travelled" the world more than I have as I engage more in virtual exhibitions. However, I also have physically exhibited locally. Being an international visual artist, I had the benefit to meet and connect with foreign artists and it is such a priv ilege to get to learn about different cultures and their art history. Learning about diverse genres of art has influenced my view of the world greatly and I try to incorporate them in my paintings. For every art exhi bition that I have participated in, I have learnt a lot and these are truly enriching experiences as an artist. Being connected to several art organizations worldwide, I get to deal with artists of different nationalities each with

a unique background. I consider all these experiences as worthwhile and fulfilling and feel honoured to repre sent the Philippines. It is also my personal mission to mentor and support young and aspiring artists and teach them how to create artworks which can inspire people to protect the environment. The painting lessons I administered were first a part of the curriculum I teach at School of Arts and Poetry, an online school which started on Facebook. I accepted the offer from the founder of the school to conduct painting lessons for its members and the public, since I believe that I should share my knowledge with the world. The lessons focus more on teaching beginners about the basics: where to get inspiration for one's art; alternative materials to use; among other topics. I provide a certificate of authenticity for every artwork l sell to anyone. This is very important to every artist not just me, as it is a written proof that the painting is originally created by you, the artist. It also discloses a clause which says that the production and copyrights remain to you, the creator of the work. This month we traveled to Orange Farm, a township in the southernmost part of the City of Johannesburg, approximately 42km from Joburg CBD. There I met a lot of outstanding young people at Siyabonga Training Centre. A place where young people gather after school to do various extracurricular activ ities. Also, present that day were representatives from various non-profit and religious orga nizations donating items and hosting life coaching skills. It is really encouraging to see a community center where young people can safely gather learn a skill, be uplifted, and most importantly stay away from the Letstreets.usall work together for the betterment of our communities. A lthough three good years had passed, it seemed with each passing second, the past was oftentimes dragging his soul backwards to dwell there. In fact, the past was looming over his present. The memories seemed to remain fresh. They kept on brewing suffering. Apparently, he was drunk with misery. Without those who were dear to him, life was meaningless and poisoned with each breath he took. Death seemed to be the only antidote to him. He felt like layers of scars that were tattooed unto him kept on heaping. How he had shut himself from everyone after the tragedy, nobody knows what would happen next to the "poor guy," as they put it. Suicide had never crossed his mind because he regarded himself to be already dead. The sting that fate had put on him was sinking deep, unto the depths of his shredded soul, laminating each fragment with Franklinnegativity.slumped his torn-apart pale mortal body on the couch, blindly gazing at the ceiling. It was 2pm in the afternoon, but he was still wearing his morning gown and shoes, a norm it had become. The house was a mess, but his heart, soul and life in general, were messier. Both the tele phone and his mobile had rung a couple of times, not mentioning how the intercom had been buzzed over and over that day. He didn't bother to pick up calls or check email messages. He knew none of them were important, for he regarded his fate to be none of their business. He knew they were all for endless pitying and sympa thizing, which he hated because it fuelled his agony to the core. He staggered as he stood and dragged his swollen feet, taking a tour in his own house that looked more like a haunted one. In fact, he was a living ghost haunting his own house. It was life less, all the glamour was gone. His eyes shot straight to where he had forced them not to land for a couple of months. Temp tation was nagging him to overturn the picture frames that he had turned upside down. He tried to smile and cry at the same time but failed, he found no reason to do both. The feeling was unexplainable. Like a statue, he remained rooted there, his thin pale fingers caressing the picture of him and his late wife. His palms began to wet with sweat, the next thing being the frame slipping away, shattering into tiny fragments on the floor, resembling his own life. Memories of how they had met years before started to send replays to his mind more than usual. It was when he had just finished college when they bumped into each other at a coffee shop one late evening. She was looking at him above the book she was pretending to read, not knowing he was not smirking at whatever she thought he was scrolling on his phone. Truth be told, he was smirking at how she was stealing glances at him. She felt like she was looking directly into his soul, a strange feeling ever. He stood and straight ened himself before he strode towards her direction, reluctantly sipping his coffee which he later spilled on her book purposely, waiting to be hit by a tornado. Surprisingly, the opposite happened. She smiled and started giggling. For a moment he stood dumbstruck, but later he dived in and joined her into insanity. It didn't bother them how many eyes were glued on them. He took her arm after their

show and walked out of the coffee shop like Romeo and Juliet, leaving everyone perplexed. Their souls were connected that very day, before they even introduced themselves to each other, weird wasn't it? To him, she was golden. Her type was rare, he counted himself to be one of those men on planet earth who were blessed. They had many things in common, a happiest couple ever. The bond between them was unique and extraordinary, beyond imag inations of many. They confessed their love to each other a few days after their circus performance at the coffee shop. Everyone was in awe when they heard about their wedding plans. In their neigh bourhood and in their little town, many did admire their love. "What a blessing", "what a weird loving couple", "soul mates made in heaven," they poured praises. It was midweek, the streets were packed with traffic when they drove to town. After consulting the gynaecologist, Franklin and his pregnant wife headed to shopping, they had to, before the arrival of their alert twins. His wife was expecting in 2 weeks time. They had already given them names, how lovely. The couple was so overjoyed as they pushed the trolley around the mall, arguing and laughing as they chose the baby clothes. They had great expectations. Shopping bags were dangling in their arms as they headed to their parked Porsche. The dark cloud of doom came home for a visit. Franklin was putting their shopping bags in the boot and his wife wanted to buy an ice-cream. The moment he closed the car boot, everything seemed to have stood still. Everyone in the street was standing as if they were electrocuted, eyes bulging. It hit him when he opened the car doors, Celena was not there. What a prank, he thought and smiled, the very last smile. As he turned to the other side of the road, he gazed unbelievably at where she lay plastered on the road painted with blood, together with the babies. He felt part of his soul being uprooted and ripped apart that very moment. He had never imagined the flower of their love being plucked before it Wasbloomed.itGod's will? Was it by stars or by chance? Franklin pondered for answers every minute. After the tragedy he was living a lie. He had neither the desire to live nor die, for the difference was the same. Fate had sealed a deal he had never signed and cast the other piece of his puzzle into the deep waters of the dead sea, where no sailor or pirate could retrieve it back. The Essence of Life By Rutendo Sawala IGrutendomq@gmail.com:rutendo_mq :NARRATIVETHE 72 VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 21.08.2022

THE SAWALA THE ESSENCE OF LIFE S oul, it is a frequently used word, affixed to a lot of expressions and utterances. It is a mystical word common across most global divides. The soul is strongly believed to be the spirit or essence of a person, that which consists of one's thoughts and personality. Generally, a soul is a person's inner character which contains their true traits and feelings. Whenever the definition of a soul comes up, the word spirit is not far from it. The spirit and soul seem to be synonymous and carry a very close relationship. In some religious perspectives, the soul is explained as the human being; composed of the spirit that gave life fused with the flesh itself, a product of the two. The soul therefore, has a portion in the physical and spiritual world. This explains why humans often fall into the pit of immoral deeds. The spirit and flesh are at war and victory only belongs to one of these components at a given time. In the context of love or matters of searching for a life partner, humans not only look for an eros type of love, but for something more, beyond their physical desires. Often people mention the word "soulmate" without taking note of the power the word "soul" carries. Humans look for a connection that exists when this physical world fails. The soul, at times, is a subconscious phenomenon. We fall in love or attract people without any intention, and we do not always have reasons why we end up sharing lives with certain individuals.

The soul knows its needs and scouts for its wants. Surprisingly the soul, though not always considered, repels what could be poisonous to Youit.attract what you are, not what you want! Souls are crackling fires, what you feed them, is what they consume and become. It is human nature to have prosperity desires, but reality is that an opportunity makes sense when one is fully equipped and has the drive and qualities of the chances availed. The soul is fully aware of its talents and capabilities. In Henry Miller's words, "Destiny is what you are supposed to do in life, fate is what kicks you and makes you do it." The soul probably understands this concept. Life does not always go as planned, we end up doing what we never imagined, yet there was a special connection with our souls. In the choices that our souls make and understand, they are completely aware of what's best for us and our predetermined states and destiny.

NARRATIVE: RUTENDO

73 VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 21.08.2022

It is very easy to ignore or suppress what affects the soul in broad daylight. At night when physical organs rest, the spiritual side of the soul activates. Our anxieties, fears, wishes and love desires crawl out of the caves of denial and the curtains we often hide from. The soul manifests fully in our dreams providing that reality check of our inner feelings and the core of our true nature. The soul is a subconscious marvel that reconnoiters in celestial spaces, prophetic in nature. A number of times people experience dreams that tend to occur in reality and in dreams the soul displays its true innate characteristics. The soul is a mirror squeaky cleaned with no blindfolds. In most facets of life, the soul possesses the characteristic of eternity. Often people talk of saving their souls, selling their souls to the devil, reincarnation, resurrection and the ancestral world or the other side. It is amazing how the soul has the power to make its choices that affect its future phases of its existence. Art and soul are inseparable. The soul can be referred to as a strong and good human feeling that gives a work of art its quality or enables somebody to recognize and enjoy that quality. The soul influences artworks in a great way. Art is an expression of inner feelings and thoughts which is basically the soul. To art appreci ators, the soul is mostly attracted to what it can relate to. When it comes to art, it is emotional first before it becomes commercial. Expressions such as," it has so much soul," or "it lacks soul" tend to pop up. The soul provides that symbolic value to life. Astonish ingly, there is what is called soul music. It is music that triggers our inner beings and provides food and therapy to it. This shows the importance of the soul, the requirements it has and its true essence in life. Soul is an amazing wonder that holds no lies or embellishments. The soul always stays true to itself. It has ways of exposing itself, even in the good and bad chapters of any time frame. The soul knows its needs and somehow, its needs are met without fail.

N othing had prepared me for the cold wind that slapped my bare cheeks as soon as my foot touched the white marble. It was pitch dark outside. The howling wind slammed the door shut behind me and my faith faltered briefly - why was I letting my ego go out of hand? With half-closed eyes, arms hugging my boney frame, I looked up the sky. It was dark and tiny stars were scattered on it, sparkling from a distance, a distance I could never fathom. I gathered my courage and slowly pushed my way forward against the wind's wild rage. I had to reach the train station.

THE QUEST PART 1 76 VACHIKEPE

As soon as I reached the sidewalk, I took one look at the house that had been home for the past twelve years. Twelve years which had begun when I was a young bride, Bryce's bride. Bryce was not rich, neither was he poor. With a school bursar's salary, he managed to make us live a comfortable life. I loved him, even now inspite of the concrete wall he had erected between us. A wall so thick and high that I no longer knew how his heart functioned. We had dated for three years before our nuptials and he had become everything to me. We were true soulmates. I did not have much in life. My parents had passed away leaving me, an only child, with nothing but our vegetable stall in the market place. I was sixteen when Mother died and eighteen when Father followed. With no known relatives to look after me, I was left to the wolves. The market stall and a few kind friends, was all I had inher ited from my parents. Fate was all I looked up to besides them. And this fate had led me to Bryce. He was an orphan too, but luckily for him, his parents had lived long enough to fund his college education. They passed away as soon as he started working. It was a tragic bus accident. His relatives did not need to do much for him. He was man enough to face the world. He married me. There was no blood relative to claim the bride price, so I just went to him like a sheep to the slaughter.

Bryce was naturally quiet, he didn't say much except that which was necessary. I was equally an introvert. We were comfort able with each other's silence and we had some kind of telepathy at certain times. I saw our union as a union of lonely souls. As the time went by, we couldn't keep quiet about our failure to conceive. No words were spoken at first, but we both knew something was not right. I became more and more agitated with each menstrual period, and he became more and more Theimpatient.atmosphere became too tense for comfort. I began looking outside for answers. I had heard of faith healers but they somehow frightened me. I literally shuddered at the thought of someone poking around my soul. I felt fear deep down inside my tumultuous mind, a fear of doing things without Bryce's knowledge, but I had to do it. Maybe this was a test of my bravery. Surely, a day had to come when I had to make my own decisions.I needed to brace myself. I visited Madzibaba Despajier and what he told me shook the very core of my "WOMAN OF VALOR" AND THE 100 SAILORS: 21.08.2022

mind. My dead parents' spirits were not happy with how I had gone to Bryce without a bride price. A blood relative was needed for further consultations. But who would I go to? At that moment, I felt cheated by my parents' dead souls. My father had come together with my mother from Zambia. Before settling in Zambia he had left his homeland, Tanzania in search of greener pastures. He met Mother in Zambia and together they trekked further down into Zimbabwe. I had never heard them talk of any relatives. It was a dead end for me. More time lapsed and Bryce began to change. First, it was the distinct smell of beer that accompanied him home each weekend. He had been a teetotaler all along so this was a shocker. But I kept my peace. Soon enough the beer smell gave way to strange perfumes and night outs. My spirits became heavier. I asked no questions and he offered no explanations. Then one day he dropped the bomb. He spend his Friday night out as usual, but this time he came back in brighter spirits. There was no smell of beer. I felt uneasy, what was he hiding? I soon found out. My answer came that Sunday afternoon. It came in the form of Sally and her newborn baby, Bryce Jnr. He may had reasons to look for a greener garden, but it didn't have to be Sally from three streets away. Sally, who had taken over my market stall when I got married. Sally, my mothers' friend's daughter. So many pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place. Sally had closed the market stall about seven months ago and her mother had explained that she had eloped. Indeed, she had eloped for she was now staying with Bryce's niece just outside town. His explanation was surprisingly cold. He showed no emotion as he introduced me to his "second wife and son." I didn't react visibly, I was too stunned. Sally and her son now occupied the spare bedroom. They were "part of the family."

Thus began my journey towards freedom. I had to go back to the beginning. Reclaiming my market stall wasn't difficult. I needed a place for undisturbed solitude. In the house I made myself as absent as possible, at the market my wings came out. My social skills grew a bar. I needed people to search for people. My conversations were long, but witty. I threw in relevant questions here and there. I had to be patient, the elderly do not dish out other people's personal infor mation, except for MaMpofu of course. I put her age at around seventy or so. Her face was a vicious terrain of scars, wrinkles and the heaviest, thickest, whitest eyebrows I had come across. Her eyes were two small dark pools which darted around all the time, one would mistake her for a sly pickpocketer. Her mouth was small, round and slightly bend downwards at the corners. I didn't like her but I had to talk to her. Her stall was much further into the market. I bravely approached her. It was worth the effort. She was so willing to talk, too willing I thought. Just mentioning my father's name sent the craziest stories flowing from her tiny mouth like a rivulet. Most of the information was surprising but irrelevant, until she mentioned my "brother." Cleverly, I extracted the information about his whereabouts, his age and his mother. I got some leads. My mind was a strange pool of trepidation and sadness as I made my way back home that evening. I had to find Nodumo, my brother, the train operator. His train passed through our town each Friday from Zambia and each Monday on its way back. Tomorrow night he was returning to Zambia and the train was to pass through the train station a few minutes to midnight. I had to be there at all costs. My soul had been uneasy for long enough. I needed answers.

“If you are not ready to sacri fice, then you are not ready for success to be a reality ”

82

~Frank Nyamundero I have come across many theories and set rules on how one can become a success in whatever they desire. I have person ally tried some of these theories and they worked for me tremendously. Later, I picked some important aspects which I believe most of us are reluctant to hear about. I once shared about getting up and doing something you feel comfortable with in life. Today I want to do an extension of that same issue by writing about total commitment and willingness to sacrifice. In other words, sacrificing and commitment are the key to bringing out the success story in you.

“ No pain, no gain! " I have heard this statement a lot of times, but with no understanding what it is really about. I would want to explain it for you in this view: if you are not ready to endure the pain of walking towards success in your life, then forget and smile about embracing that success. It will just be wishful thinking. VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 21.08.2022

SACRIFICIALKEY

Most times we fail to realise our dreams or make them reality because we are not willing to pay the price, we are not willing to work for them. If you do not pay the price (no pain) you will not reap fruits and live the dream at all (no gain). I will give you a very simple example, if a farmer plants his seeds and leaves them like that and not put the effort to work on them and give the seeds the necessary requirements for them to grow and yield fruits, will he be able to harvest? Think it through! Defi nitely not! The farmer needs to keep the seeds nourished long enough for them to develop and grow. The environment has to be just right for the plants to bear fruit. The plants need to be nurtured accordingly for them to survive. The same goes for one to be successful in life. A lot of hard work and commitment is necessary. Most people get started on certain goals which they will be willing to accomplish, however a large number never get to reach the end and enjoy the results they had set at the beginning. The main reason for that is that they are not committed to the goal and are not willing to pay the price. They are not willing to sacrifice in order to obtain the desired results. The problem we have is that we often think sacrifice and commitment is all about material things, which is not correct. There are a lot of things which are necessary and are not material for example, commitment, dedication, discipline, perseverance, hard work and courage. Many do not put in the necessary work essential to the success of the dream. The level of commitment and sacrifice is not in them, but in the results they hope to get. People aim so high in life but fall short in the planning process and in the achievement of the dream. Those who do mountain climbing may speak better for me, those fellows strive reach the top of the selected mountain by just setting their minds on the goal and putting every thing at risk to achieve it for themselves. Listen to me my friends, if there is some thing you want to achieve in life then stop holding yourself back, pay the price, no one will come and put in the work and total commitment for you. No one will come and sacrifice for something you are not willing to sacrifice for yourself. Invest in your dream and sacrifice for it, be it less hours of sleep, taking away family time to have time with my God, spending many hours of reading and researching, so be it. I could go on and on but the whole point is, I have achieved most of my goals by just setting myself to paying the price to gain the results I'm achieving. What goal have you set for yourself…? To achieve it, be willing to work and pay the price...for yourself.

The required subscription fee is not for The Trust Fund board, but for The Hundred Sailors as it gives us the financial muscle to tackle any challenge which may be dressed in the costume which we may refer to as ‘need.’ THE

Being a subscribed Sailor is also an entry point to trainings and seminars whenever arranged by the Hundred Sailors Trust Fund. A chance to be on international tours and to mix with Artists of resonance.

In each year we have anthologies published through Publisher T.P Chikepe (Pvt) Ltd and it is us the subscribing Sailors that are prioritized. THE 100 SAILORS: 21.08.2022

As subscribed Sailors we have our works marketed regularly through the Sailors Review and other avenues. Our published Poetry and Articles are edited and proof read. Building artsists with humility, transparency, teamwork and trust. For us there is first priority placement to opportunities that arise e.g being given the first chance to perform throughout in-house or external functions hosted or graced by us as the Hundred Sailors ensemble. Raise our artistry skills bar by participating in regular in-house and outdoor competitions amongst fellow subscribed Sailors.
