y name is Constance Philomena Chasi, now Mrs Chifamba. I am also known as MC Ginger. I was born in Harare in the early eighties and grew up in Norton, Zimbabwe. MC GINGER BORN FOR THIS

The events planning business I run started off as a passion. However, I later discovered I was gifted to be an amazing public speaker, actress, chorister and stager. My attendance of some poorly organised community events was eye opening to the extent of giving me a problem statement to resolve. I took a chance in one event as an MC. From then, I have performed remarkably well at any opportune moment, much to the amusement of guests from all walks of life. Before I knew it, official invitations grew in number, thus marking how I became an Events Specialist. I get to manage almost everything linked to an occasion. The process to formally register my one-stopshop investments company is well on course. I should hasten to say my staging business has a linkage to Art, due to my background. I was in the Writers and Drama clubs and choral groups, both at church and school. The exposure I got prepared me enough to be who I am today. I wrote and presented a number of poems and performed theatrical arts on so many occasions.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE MC GINGER BORN FOR THIS

My late parents (Mr and Mrs Chasi), the Lord Almighty and the community at large, played a pivotal role at inspiring me to dream big as a stager. Now that I have already started, I shall continue to run my race to a formidable end, for all the support I got I'm truly grateful. Not forgetting the teamwork plus support from my loving Hubby "Chief", "Baby Chief" my son Nashe and Nashe's onestopevents staff. The name "Lady Ginger" was given to me by Mr. Micah Moses, a church elder and Father who discovered that I had an amazing talent and had potential to grow in the Arts industry. I am a Registered MC and Events Director with Zimbabwe Directors of Ceremonies Association under the Zimbabwe Arts Council. I consider myself to be smart, as a matter of fact, I am very intelligent in my service delivery tactics. Being a female in a male dominated industry, one would question why choose MC Ginger? Well, I do not operate on gender basis, but I perform my work passionately. I do what I know best. I am extremely hilarious, well organised, flexible, and professional. I exude a lot of confidence. The fact that I am a qualified administrator is an enhancing advantage. I thrive for excellence in Events Management, and I carry out diligent research so as to provide the best equipment and services to my clientele. This is one of the reasons why they call me "Ginger," as in tsangamidzi (Shona word). They view me as a cure to a problem solved at a moments' call, #heavylikeleather. The value additive roles I now partake as a chef and decor designer came merely as per the experience gained through my operational years, though I have attended short courses to enhance my 4

practical knowledge. To a greater extent, I am almost perfect now, though I learn every day because every event is unique. By and large, I believe I can fly. So far I have implemented most of the dreams I had. However, I want to grow bigger and better as a stager, service provider and consultant. I am honoured and blessed to be part of the Hundred Sailors. I get inspired in so many ways through the work of prominent Artists like my brother Takudzwa VaChikepe The Poet, Tallence Sanyangowe my little sister, Advocate Nyanduri and a countless others. It is a unique group of serious creatives ranging from writers, editors, actors, and actresses who are success bound. I like the zeal, dedication, and hard work we put in our projects. I will never leave this group, so help me God. I am openly accessible on Meta as Ginger the Event Therapist, WhatsApp Business platforms on 0772659270, 0719659270, 0775598879 and Instagram - Gingerlic.

WORDS IN VERSE I:

In the beginning... Apparently, There was Adam Apparently, There was Eve Apparently, They represented The truth, for they wore Nothing but their skin And the Godliness They were born With! Perhaps, They fabricated The truth and looked Everywhere for a Place to hide -To hide? Perhaps, They gave the Truth a dress to Cover its nakedness And hid to cover Theirs as well -As well? It's just tragic! We believe in heroes; Yet the heroes believe in Villains... We believe in angels; Yet the angels believe In demons!

It's the true lies That make us smile During the night... It's the matrimony, Believe you me, that Created the bond Between them And us! It's tragicomedy! The brave soldiers Submit to the coward Leaders! It's scary! The gods of the land Submit to the devils of The underworld! It's the worst story ever! It's the worst story ever! The soldier who pillaged Through the village, raped Our sisters and killed our Mothers; turned himself Into a woman! The woman who fought For the liberation of the Girl child and became The first female warrior; Turned herself into A man! It's crazy! Yet normal

In their crazy Blind eyes! Kill them! For we know You're impossibly Perfect at terminating Those who speak And stand by The true Word! Kill me! For I'm a Hypocrite: I Know the truth And can't say It because I know If I... Stand by it, The serpent will Without a doubt lead Me to my destruction! TRUTH

WORDS IN VERSE I

Like the sun What's transparent sets in Though to some_ It's unpalatable, still it sinks in Just as the game of zero sum Waiting only is for it to tarry To strike The right note; The correct code: The exact node, in no hurry. As does a vision from God A visitation of what ain't void Comes to pass in time by faith A misrepresentation of fact It is not! But, like the full stop It is the dot. Non-existent in-hoods-false Ends where it starts Yardstick, is there any To confirm what we've never known, nay Who shall lead another to where they've never been By themselves? Let whatever shall set us free indeed According to our deeds Unarguably be The sought after dot The Omega and Alpha. By Towandah Ryan tawandamanyati@gmail.com +263772815211

There is a new devil in town

WORDS IN VERSE I We have become second class Citizens! Our reality is now fiction, If you are lucky! If not, it has Become a criminal charge! How fictitious can you be? Has become the fashion, Of the day! Knowing that we can’t do the Impossible, hasn’t stopped us From trying! As a matter of fact, It is inspiring us to keep on trying More and more and more! If the impossible is truly Impossible! Then we have Successfully found different ways Of mimicking the impossibilities! “With God nothing shall be impossible”, we believed! And with God nothing shall be impossible, We believe! On top of that, we have believed That we are God’s children! Thus, Giving ourselves, licenses to Create anything we deem Necessary and starting To believe that, Everything, is Possible! Not only have we throned Ourselves gods! But, Subconsciously, we Want to put the Devil, out of Business!

“ZiMunamato” is the name of my latest song. ZiMunamato, is a Shona word which means “A Very Big Prayer.” Another name of this song is “Shema” which in Hebrew, means “Hear”. This song resonates with a Jewish prayer that is found in meditating through Deuteronomy 6:4-9. “This song is soaked, is serenity; spiritually activating, with a constant meditational thought line, that pounces on every heartbeat of life, with thurds of great joy and continuous amazement...” Listen to this song on YouTube, Spotify: Amazon. Oxygen Five - Mazino ft Cheezy A and Kidd M is a track about the struggle we are facing in the country due to many reasons like corruption. On the video you will see a graduate wearing a cap of knowledge and a gown pushing chingoro (scotchcart) selling bananas which is an expression that we are forced to do jobs that we didn't go to school for. Inorder to get a job one has to have a 'connection' with powerful and influental people. So basically, Mazino PaZimbabwe zvakaoma paZimbabwe. Listen to the song on YouTube

ELDER GADZO MUSIC TO THE WORLD

I

n life there are always people who are considered as elders despite their age. In this issue, we have one such elder who shared with us his journey as Elder Gadzo.

"I was born in Harare, Zimbabwe and did my primary level in Norton at Chiedza Primary school. I started making music in my fourth grade and then did my secondary level at St Eric. I discovered l was good at being a Master of Ceremonies (MC) when l was doing form one where l was already part of the Interact Club. At some point l also became a DJ. I had a sound crew called Positive Vybz then moved to Roots Radix sound crew in 2004. That is where I began creating Music to the world clan and I began wheel spinning. Back then people used to call me Gadzo Mix because I was good at mixing music. As time went on in the music industry, mostly through pushing works of other artists or rather helping artists be known, people started calling me Elder Gadzo. The statement “Music to the world” came up like this, as a wheel spinner l wanted and still want the local music to reach the global market. This statement has nothing to do with any type of music genre in particular. The most important thing was concentrating on taking all types of music genres to the global market.

ONE VOICE MORE MUSIC ELDER GADZO MUSIC TO THE WORLD

On any normal day I am always be in the studio doing what I do best as the Elder. I enjoy creating mixtapes which are a combination of music from different artists into one. When coming up with a mixtape we concentrate on our fans versus chosen artists. We look at the music the fans like and/or prefer to listen to. I also do marketing, advertising and look for greener pastures for other artists. It is my job to locate or create bigger platforms for artists to appear and perform whether live and/or recorded. This is done so as to enable the artists to be exposed to a larger market and be recognised globally.

ELDER GADZO MUSIC TO THE WORLD

An artist without proper airplay always finds it hard to be known, hence l come in to help them get that needed airplay on different radio stations across the globe. We also push their videos until they are on big television stations like Channel O, Trace Urban and more other well recognised TV stations. The most common challenge to take note of in the music industry is gaining and maintaining a following. Artists need fans to keep their music alive. They need to work hard to create "good" music, market, distribute and host shows where they perform for the market. With hard work, in five years’ time I foresee myself with an arts centre, a local radio and television station which will be broadcasting internationally. My aim is to take local music and distribute it all over the world through different means for example internet, radio, television and social media. As an artist, I would like to encourage those who are in the same industry with me to keep on working hard and reach the global market in music business. For more information on my works you can contact me on +263713386582." Interview By DrThembieTanya madziwathembie@gmail.com +263719675521 VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 17.07.2022

No Smooth Road

WORDS IN VERSE I

Grandpa told me; "stars are like humans, Grow old only to die out with pace." I was no much for space; I always wanted to keep stars trace. They lit my paths together I smiled ear to ear without bother; My stars near-sightedness to me ever The world was far, with them it seemed a forever! One by one they shoot to the sky; Yet I can't fly – I am to cry Even if stars die out, they leave black holes Now my heart bleeds for the fallen comrades. Grandpa says; "stars like humans, grow old to die out" And that's the way we're all to varnish; The bittersweet TRUTH! THE HUNTER

WORDS IN VERSE I WHAT IS THE TRUTH? THE 100 SAILORS INTERNATIONAL AFFILIATES

The hunter is now the hunted! Truth as a spirit is all over Rolling and penetrating persistently like a river With his unlimited sword, shield and the spear Probing for anyone who transpire, misfire or despair In legislature, truth is there! Exhume for me all the lies in their eyes In the environment, truth is here Protect the planet or else face the penalty In the army, truth is hard to bear Rest waging wars if exhausted of unwanted blows In schools, truth is very rare We train all careers and when through they become barriers! In health, truth is out of breath Wellbeing is well doing stop the mocking With God, truth is more intrepid Stop pretending, you know God is watching In press, truth is not at rest Speak of me or else I am going headless And in courts truth speaks a lot Accept me or I disassemble your belts. Nothing But The Truth

WORDS IN VERSE I

Who are we, mere humans so clouded by our own judgements? So engrossed in our own skins; Who are we? Scared little beings of confrontation, Scared of admitting that the spade is a spade. And that green can never be blue while blue can never be green. We hide so much behind the masks we wear on our faces , Lies packed behind our teeth, They ain't white anymore! Truth, church says it teaches truth Yet the contradictory scripture is read daily And the congregation keeps contradicting the sermons with their everyday actions. Parents teach one thing and do the other; What is truth? Is it fear, or is it our deepest fears that restrain us from learning the real issue. Well how can we know truth when we are not real with ourselves? Playing characters of scripted lives, Or should I say scripted lies? Well, I guess I'll never know what it is, For even the mirror looks oscillated nowadays, Made to make me look like that. WORDS IN VERSE I WHAT IS THE TRUTH? THE 100 SAILORS INTERNATIONAL AFFILIATES

As it is written, so does it happen, As God intended, the life I live is rented. That's reality – the Word illuminates the invisibility. Question mortality, numbers don't lie about infinity, To them who, in truth seek guidance, a solution, From the devine purpose, in accordance with salvation. What's in a name/ word/ title/ term? Could that cause any good or harm? Like taste, what's put in mouth, Expires out as waste, down south. Only that which nourishes the body is retained, Healthy words, numbers, symbols ordained, Whatever necessary to have you sustained. It's all upon God's will... SADIE SCHAECHER FINDING COMFORT IN WORDS

M

y name is Sadie Schaecher, I am 16 years old from North Carolina, USA. Ever since I was a kid, I have always wanted to be heard. I wanted to do something, have a platform to discuss topics I felt passionate about, make a change, anything. Throughout my childhood I experienced many health challenges, mental as well as physical. This drove me to writing, I used my words to cope. I found comfort in words, in the beauty of language. The words meant a lot to me and I was hopeful they could and would be meaningful to someone else. I had words to say, my way to be heard, and after that, I just had to find my place to say them.

The slam competition that I won recently was the Jambalaya Soul Slam. I competed once before this, and was ecstatic to make it through the first round, after which I got cut. So, with all the experience of performing my poetry a total of one time, I entered what I believed to be a poetry workshop with the Jambalaya Soul Slam. I was wrong. I arrived and suddenly I heard 36

SADIE SCHAECHER FINDING COMFORT IN WORDS

an announcement asking all competing poets to come to the back, calling us all by name, and telling us the order we will get the stage. At that moment, I almost left. I was a teenager surrounded by adults who were incredible at what they do and by no means prepared. But when they called my name to get on stage, I sat there for a moment, and realized that this was a chance to be heard. Even if I blew it, I wanted to cherish every moment. I was lucky enough to get on a stage and have a voice. Once I decided that, I took every second on stage fully convinced that it was my last. When they started announcing placement, they went from lowest to highest. I expected to hear my name right up at the beginning, but when I didn’t hear it, I thought they had forgotten about me. Eventually we got to the final 3, and when they announced third place, I began taking a video to show my parents because I was so excited, I got third place. But they mentioned someone else’s name. They announced second place and I still hadn’t heard my name. At this point I’m sure I should’ve put the dots together that I’d won, but I was surrounded by such amazing poets, all of whom I looked up to and wanted to be like one day. I really didn’t believe I had won until they called my name. I still don’t quite believe it because I am in no means an expert, however, I have something that helped me in performing that I can share. Speak slowly. Define every word. Believe in what you are saying, and as you speak give the audience time to hear and believe in the words too. Also, when I get anxious, I speak ridiculously quick and stumble over my words. I always make sure to bring my poems in paper form, so I can write at the top of them to remember to breathe. I find that the best thing to compliment powerful words is a powerful silence. The title for my poem, Slim Reaper, actually came from my wonderful sister, Sara. I had been working on it for a while, and I was completely stuck on a name. She is just about the most clever person I know, so as I often do with my poetry, I went to her. When she gave me this name idea, I thought it was perfect. The poem was written about a time in my life in which my grim reaper came right before me. He stood there, just inches away, and he looked me in the eyes. In them I saw myself without the very thing I needed to survive. I saw myself falling apart, because I was scared of the life that proper nutrients would provide me. I chose this name because it expressed what the grim reaper looked like for me. I chose to repeat the word ‘pretty’ to make the poem feel almost stuck on that word. Because for so long, I’d been stuck on that word. It replayed in my mind, finding its way into my thoughts and my stanzas. In writing this verse, I really identified with the juxtaposition of these gruesome images paired with a graceful word such as that - to me, it showed what it’s like to fall in love with your illness. I do think there are people who beautify death. I believe there are ways to do this in a healthy and constructive manner, as seen in religious contexts. Where I see this becoming unhealthy is in a social dynamic. Unrealistic and harmful body standards are promoted through social media and diet culture, until insufficient nutrition is what we consider beautiful. Growing up in these times, people applaud you for having your life slip away through meals. In these times, we praise harbouring hate for yourself, because it is considered charming when someone else needs your assurance to have self-worth. We glorify the idea of bad decisions. As a society, we’ve fallen in love with the idea of danger, making death out to be something exhilarating in a vastly unhealthy manner. Snippet to poem 97% I'm tired of saying 'thank you' To your catcalls I'm tired of letting fear Dictate my outfit. I'm tired of needing proof To make someone believe me

The idea for the poem 97% surfaced around the time that a study was released. This study stated that 97% of women in the specified testing range had been sexually harassed in some form. This information arose around the same time I started dealing with similar experiences, so I decided to use some of the anger I was feeling as inspiration, and wrote 97%. I think that ‘the devil’ to someone who is growing never looks the same as it does to someone else. Someone’s personal devil can look like fear, or it can look like having no fear at all. The struggles in someone's life can bear resemblance to those of another, but it never looks the same. Our own devils are made up of all the things we didn’t deserve to have happened to us, it grows and changes throughout our lives. I visualize it similarly to the grim reaper I spoke of earlier. That idea has looked very different for me throughout the years, I’ve found my devil in nutrition, mental health, physical health, chronic pain, and more. I think that the ‘devil’ to a teenager is made of no specific thing, because hardship can look two completely different ways, and still be someone's valid experience. When speaking of trustworthiness, it is a very common ideology that teenagers make mistakes. I am not here to dispute that, however what I think is sometimes overlooked, is that everyone does. As a 16-year-old, I am happy to admit that I do not know everything. But I guarantee that won’t change if I’m 10 years older or 50. I have had the experience of being treated like my voice matters less because I am young, and I think that mindset can be a loss for everyone. Something meaningful can come from someone of any age. So as a teenager, I acknowledge that I am still learning. However, I don’t think that there’s any point in life in which we’re not. 40

Poetry is something I’ve kept from my family and friends for a long time. It was not until I started to pursue it publicly that they found out. I did not share it for so long because, as with all art, poetry is vulnerable. And although it's quite ironic to say as a performing poet, vulnerability is one of the things I am worst at. I wanted my words shared without having to own up to them. I think at first, my family and friends didn’t quite understand. I found it hard to verbalise, because the performance aspect, the element of sharing, felt just as important to me as the actual written poetry. Once I brought them into the community I’d found, showed them why I loved what I do, they have been nothing but supportive. As Sadie, I want to create change. I want to create a space for myself in which I can say what I think needs to be said, and I can have people listen. I want to make it easier for some other kid out there, and if I can’t do that, at least make them feel seen when it gets hard. And the only way I know how to do that is through my words. I have a million things to say, so all I want for the future is to get my chance to say them. May best advise is, “Give back to the world what you wished you could’ve had.” Interview By DrThembieTanya madziwathembie@gmail.com +263719675521 VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 17.07.2022

As a designer and business owner, it has been a delightful experience as many people appreciate creativity and are supportive. The business looks into what people want and need. I make sure to go the extra mile to satisfy those wants and needs. Whether it is cups, frames or key rings. These of course are done with a poetical message on them. As an entrepreneur I have faced several difficulties, but with the grace of God, my business is still standing and is on its way each day. Yes, we are a registered business and we now supply several stores with our products.

I am a Christian and have fans and fellow artists who are not of the same religion. I thought I would encounter problems along the way, but the case has been different. To cater for all people from different backgrounds and religions, I ensure that my poems are simple and more realistic so that they can be easily understood and felt. For those who are not Christians they may not get the biblical references, but real-life experiences tied with the biblical reference make a difference. I also try to aim to reach as many as possible through my works. Hence, my works are not just for Christians, but non-Christians as well.

My poster reads, “Campbell K. Poetic Writing and Designs and that makes me diverse. To me writing is natural with my earliest recollections of my artist journey having begun while I was young. When I get my inspiration from God, that inspiration or vision makes my content to be widely accepted and loved by many. Sometimes an idea pops up in my mind and I get going from there. Pertaining to design, I explore and try different ways to bring across the creativity and satisfy what a customer wants and needs. For me, writing ties into designing and I equally love both. April 2021 was when we began the journey as Campbell K. Poetic Writing and Design. This year we celebrated our one-year anniversary. The first twelve months were very adventurous, tedious, and puzzling. I ventured into this field of art through constant prayers and thoughts of encouragement from key friends. I eventually started exploring the thoughts and ideas for my father’s birthday and to my surprise, it fuelled creativity within me, and I was encouraged to continue. I had to teach myself design and its aspects. I also had to acquire machinery and seek assistance on how to operate it. When I began, I knew nothing about art, colours, and design, but in the past twelve months I learnt a lot and can now proudly speak in confidence about colours and poetic/ graphic designing. I will complete my course in Graphic Design soon. VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 17.07.2022

The greatest lessons I have learnt are 1. To work hard and be more organised 2. Create my own legacy 3. To not depend on anyone, and 4. To not procrastinate. I still have a journey to embark on in the upcoming years, however, my expectations are that my business will continue to grow and I will also grow as an individual. I want to live the life God has planned out for me. Nothing less. I would like to leave behind a word of advice to my fellow artists. I say embrace your talents and use it to your advantage. Doing what you love is always a good way to stay happy. Do not hide it but share so that it may impact someone. Promotion of the works of upcoming talented young artists emerging from Africa`s developing nations is the main reason behind the existence of the brand name VaChikepe: The Poet. Among other things, publishing written works to the world at large has been an endeavour that this very first anthology volume, to come from a united stable, has made a reality. To these inspired artists, each coming and passing day has served to be for sharpening writing skills and motivating one another to keep surging forward towards greatness with a lot of faith. The compilation is, therefore, to a greater extent unedited to maintain originality and each writer’s style, and will serve as a lasting reminder of how from humble beginnings thoughts and raw talent were exhibited with conviction and self-motivation to help inform and change or shape the world positively through poetry. Emotional Evolution: Thoughts by Pikitayi

by Angela Pikitayi Rugara (Author)

Through the journey of life, I aspired for success in the jungle of politics, economics and technology. Having walked that path I retired from formal employment to embark on a new adventure in art. Unbeknown to me that was where my passion was buried all along. I have never been afraid of failing, but always love to try out new things that rouse my passion. So I decided to write poetry in the hope of capturing lives and the feelings therein. Is it not humanity’s deepest need to know that we are all connected? This gathered record of poems seeks to show emotional evolution experienced, not only by the seeker of art but by a stranger walking alone; the friend who misses; and the mother who believed she was unseen. The greatest intent of this work being: It’s okay for one to express themselves as they feel. If you cannot talk then write. If you cannot fight for those in pain then speak for them. In my culture, we are often very private about how we feel. The natural answer when someone asks how we are is “Fine or okay.” These two words hide a lot of unexpressed emotions as people often give answers to one of those words with a smile. I have seen smiles with sad eyes. As you read on I hope you find yourself and others in these poems. Click here to order VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 17.07.2022

The Fight Room

When the Doc went into psychology she didn't think that she was the kind of person to compromise her values for a farfetched possibility of finding love. It is for those compromises that she is attacked and left for dead. Any of the addicts, sleepwalkers or struggling couples that make up her patient list could have done it. Is her near-death a bid to silence a dark secret or is it karma for her indiscretions? Besides being a goodie-too-shoes, judgmental, snobbish, at times pretentious woman, Lin, always thought that hers was the perfect marriage, if only with a few problems. When she lost her baby she thought therapy would heal her marriage. Instead, it is during therapy that she discovered that she and her husband might not be perfect. From Mark's perspective, it was in therapy that he lost everything that he believed of himself and what if he never finds any substance to himself, besides, he is a murderer and thief. in nature; flora and fauna, rocks and mountains, clouds, rain, found objects, human beings and everything that is heavenly created. Whenever I create a piece of visual art, I would also create a poem or a story to go with it. l have been creating ekiphrasis pieces, meaning I started poetry the same time I began expressing myself through stone sculpting since June 1999. However, 51

it was Takudzwa Chikepe and The Hundred Sailors who gave me the platform to express myself through writing, reading, and reciting my stories in the form of poetry from 2014. My sojourn as an ekiphrasis artist is very interesting. With paint and brush, punch, and hammer in visual arts and with no formal training in poetry, I managed to pick up a pen and a paper, wrote and spoke my mind, shaping words inventively. I somehow managed to put the past and present geographical and cultural memory in words. We must confront our historical legacies, bridge the structural and the personal through not only theory and memory, but criticism and creativity. Though I have not accomplished much, I am still studying art and its history thoroughly. I can safely say, by studying the tools and devices, I am gaining a palette of possibilities with which to work and express diversely and imparting communities, students and young poets seeking visibility in their experimentation. One of my early poems was published in, "Don’t Give up Africa ,” under VaChikepe and The Hundred Sailors and my other poem found its way to the Global Sojourns Giving Circle Journal. I also enrolled at Pennysilvania State University where I am currently doing an online program called Global Learning in Agriculture. The program focuses mainly on teaching educators how they can teach their students to harness the arts and agriculture. One of the many poems I wrote entitled Mushavi Mukuru is about subsistence hunters. This poem was inspired by human and wildlife conflicts from the area I come from in Zimbabwe. I was defining the hunters that I have known and have been part of when I was a little boy. I tried to differentiate them from bush meat hunters and poachers that we have nowadays who kill animals for commercial purposes. “Demo mugotsi Demo mugotsi Uropi pfachu…” This is how we narrated to our parents, how our big brothers and uncles would have killed an animal, and would then 52

respond in hunters praise poems. They stayed true to our culture and at the same time respected the environment. That is what I had in mind when I wrote the poem and I hope, through the poem, the matter will be on somebody’s mind screen. I am now known as a self-taught stone sculptor and mixed media artist because of VaChikepe and The Hundred Sailors. Through the group I have been exposed to the wide world of art and have learnt a lot from established and upcoming artists. At the Peter Birch school of Arts, I acquired a diploma in Arts and Craft, and I specialised in sculpture, painting, drawing and fashion designing. When I enrolled, I wanted to study painting only but then found out there was fashion designing and several art-based courses, like art history mixed media art, graphic designing, drawing and illustration. Such courses are the base of everything in visual storytelling and they caught my attention. I was grateful for being around creative people and doing what I am passionate about every day and meeting some incredible artists along the way. The only challenge I faced there was that I sometimes felt restricted in the way I had to create my art. I am an ambitious type of person and I strive in thinking out of the box in different situations. I like experimenting with new and different aspects of art. Two streets away from Peter Birch School of Art, was an NGO called Streets Ahead that used to feed street kids. Some of the kids who came to have their lunch would come to the art school and peep over the fence to see what we were doing. VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 17.07.2022

Some of them developed a liking for art and wanted to learn more. They could not enrol because they did not have the money. I then offered to teach them. After my lessons, I would meet them in the streets and teach them from the streets up until the Streets Ahead Director saw us and offered a backyard space at their premises. That is when I started volunteering and used arts as a teaching tool. I then migrated to Victoria Falls and volunteered at Rose of Charity orphanage which is located in the high density suburb of Chinotimba. I did voluntary work at the orphanage for four years and then went on to be a co-founder at Rise And Shine. It’s a youth serving arts-based charitable organization that advances education and a sustainable climate environment targeting rural and peri-urban girls, boys, youth and women. In all the programming, it is my desire to volunteer, intervene as an artist and a creative because I am passionate about the medium of art as an intervention tool on people and the environment. Therefore, volunteering in any way, offers vital help to people in need, worthwhile causes, and the community, but the benefits can be even greater for the volunteer. The right match can help you to find friends, connect with the community, learn new skills, and even advance your career. As an artist, I am creating platforms for myself and others to showcase our art and be heard. I feel happier, healthier and 'irie,' like the Jamaicans would say. I also enjoy visual storytelling. I specialize in Mixed Media Art which is a term used to 53

describe artworks composed from a combination of different media or materials. It mainly requires found objects and drawing. It is a form of visual art in which an artist uses instruments to mark paper or other two – dimensional surfaces to engage with viewers in an effort to drive emotions, create dialogue, and motivate an audience to action. However, as an ekiphrasis artist, my opinion is that poetry is a type of literature based on the interplay of words and rhythm. In poetry, words are strung together to form sounds, images, and ideas that might be too complex or abstract to describe directly. The same applies to painting, dance, sculpture or music; all these forms of storytelling have tools, techniques, practices and a history that informs them. Anyone can pick up a pen and write a few heartfelt lines, but there is much more that goes into shaping a good poem as much as there is in visual storytelling. As a student of poetry, I am always surprised to learn just how rich and deep, varied and complex the tools, techniques, aspects, and history of poetry are, compared to those of visual art. I am also amazed at how much there is to learn to master skills to consistently produce real quality visual art and write poems of real quality. The study of how to make a poem what a stanza is, and a metaphor, how line breaks work, is the same as learning how to mix paint, how to tone the use of light, medium and dark, the use of broken and solid lines in perspective, how to account for all the light especially in classic painting, different effects created by a certain tool in sculpting, the use of contour lines and rhythm. To cut the story short, the two forms of art work hand in glove and are one and the same thing, which is art. The only difference is that one is visual and the other may be audible or in writing. In a couple of years, I hope to see my charitable institution, Rise and Shine, bigger and stronger. I plan to continue targeting individuals from all walks of life to get involved in art through learning. I want to use art as a tool for economic social development and environmental awareness. I also intend to have art imbibed in our school curriculum.

ot so long ago The Sailors Review ran with a theme inspired by Amanda Gorman in her interview with Michelle Obama in which she states, “Poetry and language are often at the heartbeat of movements for change. Never underestimate the power of art as the language of the people.” This quote came to be affirmed by the poem Sweeet sixteen is no more by Towandah Ryan. This work of art serves as a celebration of a ruling by the Constitutional Court of Zimbabwe in effectively changing the age of sexual consent from 16 years to 18 years. In the poem the poet makes one thing clear, WHAT IS NORMAL DOES NOT EQUATE TO WHAT IS RIGHT. To get the full gist of the story, here is what Towandah Ryan had to say:

VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 17.07.2022

59

WORDS IN VERSE III: POETRY ANALYSIS TOWANDAH RYAN

"I am elated to have written the poem, Sweeet sixteen is no more on a raw nerve topic that goes to the root of our upbringing as African men. The landmark Constitutional Court of Zimbabwe ruling of the 24th of May 2022, on the age of sexual consent, blew in the face of an unwritten but long held practice of taking advantage of minors to consent to sexual relations, let alone at worst, trap and subjugate them into early childhood marriages. Indeed, "sweet sixteen" was and is a common cliche', one I have heard since I do not know when. Basically, the cliche' is now six feet under, dead and buried thus no longer holding water in law. My use of the word "sweeet" with three e's was deliberate. Just like the drag effect in the expression of a kiss, that is mwaaaa or mwaaaah with a yearning to be prolonged. Hence, there are loads of jest in this poem (In our vernacular language we call it ndyaringo). Inspite, of it being offending, it seems we have always been fond of depicting or viewing the girl child in a relatively smaller frame as compared to that of men (kupa mwanasikana humhumhu huduku). Our common use of class 12 (mupanda 12) ' ka ' on the table of nouns somehow bears testimony to this. There is even a popular and entertaining ghetto youths’ song called Kanjiva. The song became a national anthem. It’s how it would be said more often than not, "ndazviwanira ka _sweet sixteen kangu" which means I have found for myself a little cute angel, so to speak. Nothing could be amiss or wrong had it not in actual fact been in 60

reference to someone who is or below sixteen years of age. In proud bar or shrine talk, grown men would beat their chests and celebrate trophy hunting underaged girls with whom they would eventually marry. If my memory serves me right, growing up I once read a novel with a line more or less like " gombo iri ndoririma chete" in reference to a woman as prime land up for tilling. As such, potential husbandry men would jockey each other to come out first at the freshest land grab. This was how the derivation of the metaphor of the field to depict a woman before she is deflowered came about. However, this is exactly the type of language that the Constitutional Court put an end to softly, both right and ruthlessly with its recent ruling. My inspiration with the girl child theme, however, did not start with this poem. In 2018 I wrote a short poem, My beautiful girls based on my two young daughters. In 2020 I wrote Hi Tsitsi in celebration of Tsitsi Dangarembga's literary achievements. I also wrote a poem entitled No lass is dollar for two which became one of the top 50 entries into the Larfarge Girl child themed poetry slam. The poem was against disrespectful marriage practices such as kutizisa (Eloping, and the parents of the girl will then be notified by the family of the would -be husband that they should stop searching for their daughter because their child is with them.), musengabere (whereby a girl is forcibly grabbed physically by a man and then forced into marriage), kuchaya mapoto (living with partners with no lobola paid), and VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 17.07.2022

kuripiswa ngozi (where a girl is sent to a family to serve as a ransom payment for avenging spirits). Annihilating any girls' virginity before its time is criminal. My poem, Sweeet sixteen is no more had to be on point and speak up about what is fair for us all. Whenever 'God is in it', even the boychild is favoured by waiting. Patience is a virtue; than noticing afterthought how hurried up a basic need was. Sometimes when things have happened, they cannot be undone (Yadeuka yadeuka mvura yemuguchu haidyorerwi). The damage will have been done. Bottomline, though my poem was oriented on the girl child's relief, the concept of underage sexual engagement ain't a purview of only girls leaving out the boy child. To increase the impact of my poem, I was compelled to translate it into one of the vernacular languages of Zimbabwe, Shona. It was also necessary because I wanted to widen the readership and quicken the sensitisation or foster awareness in relation to this current affair in Zimbabwe, and Africa at large. To me it was eye opening to also learn that we (Zimbabwe) were lagging behind a couple other African nations on application of such rule of law.

Kudos to the two women who raised the issue of sexual consent age by approaching the Constitutional Court. They are figuratively brave like lionesses to have had parity of treatment re-assessed." Apart from translating this poem, I am among the pioneering Sailors in The SailorsTranslate! program, this partly is where the motivation to continue to translate where possible comes from. Leaving the poem only in English would been one more language barrier on a court ruling with far reaching after effects.

SWEEET SIXTEEN IS NO MORE

WORDS IN VERSE III With sobs of a drooling hyena, With chicanery tears of a crocodile: Every unattending woman says It's his own funeral... Caught red handed field harvesting Whence he never laid a seed, nor Tended the crop, Like a marauding mealie cob thief Well before it's time. Sweeet sixteen is no more, She unexpectedly has lost it To sweet 18. Like wine, the newcomer has gotten better with age Sweeet sixteen is now a thing of the past She all of a sudden lost her spot To sweet 18. Is not, an eagle fully matured, Much better than the eaglet? Is it not what we've always said, That there's no hurry in Africa We wait till every banana has ripened That every hen that roosts has never meant Every rooster ought to rob her,

VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 17.07.2022

THE NARRATIVE:

RUTENDO SAWALA THE REVELATION, THE TRUTH

I

t was the busiest place ever. The noise and activity seemed to be the norm. There she was Matilda, sitting at the back of the bus, staring out the window. Reality was she was staring at absolutely nothing. Her thoughts were a distance away. Even the passenger sitter next to her seemed to be a ghost. She was in her own bottle topped with a cork. Crouching in isolation, looking for solace that she knew she could not find anywhere.

Earlier Matilda had been in a nasty encounter with her father. She had just finished her ordinary level examinations and obtained the required five passes. Her dream was to one day stand in a court room adorned in that coat of honor. The problem now was the situation at home. The funds to further her education were just a mirage in Matilda's eyes. Her old man wanted her to look for a job and help fend for her six siblings. The ordinary certificate she had obtained was enough. Looking for a job was the next step and a necessity. Matilda had a talent that she could not ignore. Passion kept her up at night, pondering on what a star she could be if she pursued her dream. Her voice was a treasure. Whenever she opened her mouth to sing she left everyone mesmerized. She had managed to secure a place in a band as a backing vocalist, after the leader had noted her beautiful voice in a talent show. This was a dream come true for her. Rehearsals were at night and she constantly had to lie to her parents that she was going to church choir meetings. All hell broke loose one night after the choir master paid a visit at their family home. He was so concerned about Matilda's absenteeism and could not bear the thought of going to competitions without her powerful voice. The only thought that came to Matilda's father was that his eldest daughter was now entertaining boys, worse off men older than her. Her father's decision was simple. Upon her return, her father ordered her to pack her bags and head for her husband's house. "You think you are now a grown woman, huh... Doing whatever you want in my own house!" Matilda and her mother had VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 17.07.2022

pleaded with the cross man. In tears she had no choice but to tell him the whole truth. The confession did not extinguish the fumes either. Matilda's father could not have it. No daughter of his would be a musician. That was a vagabond spirit that sought refuge in his child's head. Matilda had to cease this nonsense or leave her father's house. That was the ultimatum. The advocate in her could not tolerate these infringements to her desires. She challenged her father so loudly that her body greeted the touch of the black belt's buckle. She screamed and shouted, further challenging the old man. If it wasn't for her mother that embraced her, she could have been left a wreckage. That night was the longest night that Matilda's mother had ever endured. Her womb writhed in pain every time the thoughts of the belt kissing her child's body overwhelmed her. She loved her daughter dearly. She had carried, breastfed and natured her, a bond that her husband could never understand. She knew her daughter had a passion for music. She had always seen that creative side of her daughter from a very tender age. What could she do now. Her husband was hot headed. She could do nothing! After all she was not the man of the house. In Matilda's room, silence overpowered her personal space. Faint sobbing of the teenager could be heard under the layers of the blankets. The poor girl was bitter, bitter to her father, herself and her life itself. Nothing she had planned pre-examinations seemed to be working out. 78

Academics and spotlight, all plans gone down the drain. She was the envy of the community youth's center. Being part of the crusader band had earned her a lot of enemies. Even the other band members knew the gifted girl was headed for the stars and a threat to all of them. Wiping away the tears from her face, she struggled with the idea of telling the band leader of her quitting. The pain and shame, she could not handle. Matilda now aware of her surroundings. She noticed the bus had a few vacant seats. Under normal circumstances she would be so excited to be on a bus. Traveling was one of her hobbies. It gave her an adrenaline rush. Not this time. She was so depressed, a feeling she never experienced before. She felt as if her whole body was in chains and the only movement, she could make was the one her captivator permitted her. The feeling was so frustrating. She only wished she could disappear from this world, a world that proved to be so selfish. In the middle of the bus, a woman carrying a child on her back. Yelling on top of her voice and pulling a man's hand who seemed to be her husband. All the passengers raised their heads to see what the mayhem was all about. "You said we are both leaving for Dande, since city life is now expensive. Now you want to leave me in this bus destined for your village, live with your relatives. Most of which are strangers to me. You found me living in the township! Your promise was we would start a life together. What you are saying is rubbish Phineas" VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 17.07.2022

THE NARRATIVE:

RUTENDO SAWALA THE REVELATION, THE TRUTH

"Listen here woman!" The husband was now furious. Stammering with anger, words struggling to exit his shivering lips. "I married you and you do as I say. Where I come from women stay at home and the men go out to work. Go and build our family home, cultivate crops and be of use to my mother. A real wife does not care about the fantasies of the city. Your purpose is to nature a family, nothing else and that's the truth!" It is the word "truth" that got to Matilda. This was the word that erased her depression and roused anger in her. The grenades within her ignited because of Phineas' patriarchal oppressive speech. This was just like her father. She was in this bus because he had sent her away to live with her paternal grandmother. Matilda's father wanted his daughter to go back to his roots, soak out all the city nonsense that had polluted his child's mind. He wanted her to learn the roles of an African woman and her place in the society. His last words to her... "You have lost your mind Matilda and that's the truth". The word truth kept on ringing in her mind. What was this creature that kept on torturing her. What was the truth? It took her time, confusion ruling her mental capability. At last, an answer came through. A revelation that made sense to her. The truth was a consensus that was passed on for generations. A product of socialization that instilled encryptions in the brain. She now understood the concept of majority rule. The truth was a game of number. What the majority agrees goes. It is a matter of conscience. A diversion from reality more like rebellion against the masses. She now understood why this 'truth' had been embraced. The man had fear and incapacity to change the norm. Afraid of the repercussions and chaos that would come with change. Too reluctant to design the truth that fit with them in this dynamic world. *** Matilda began to think ' mine is not a subversion from morality, but a surrender to my divine purpose that doesn't necessarily fit with my kind. One kind of truth is acceptable. Truth that dwells in places unknown. Unquestionable reality that comes from a higher source. God had given her this talent. She knew what she had to do. Stay true to herself, even if her father thought otherwise. No one had a right to impose their truth on her, except her creator. She gathered her belongings and left the bus. She knew what she had to do.

YOU CAN'T STOP BECAUSE OF A DETOUR "Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm" ~ Winston Churchill

uccess is not like a One Day International (ODI) game of cricket, it’s like playing a test match which goes on for some days to have a result determined at the end of it. The road to success is a long one and has a lot in it which can be so unpleasant to go through. The difference is not on how hard the walk is, but how hard you have managed to endure the journey. One thing I have come to understand is that, the level of our success stories, vary based on one looming the plot to keep on or not.

Many people highly think that for one to be rated as successful, is all in being successful in all areas at all the time. If it had been that way, then all of us we should possess everything we want in this life to be called successful. A lot of times we think that failures are hindrances to

"building dreams into a lasting legacy" achieving our successes, but the opposite is true. I know most of you are getting confused but let me shade some little light for you to comprehend it all. Look at it in this way, for a success to be termed as one is all a result of failures, if it then there were no failures then success wouldn’t mean a thing at all. For one to be called a victor there should be an opponent they get to overcome, for success to be as it is there should be failure along the way. Even though failure is along the way, the difference of every result comes from one’s6 desire and will not to throw in the towel when it gets hard on you. The greatest question you need to ask yourself is, “what really drives me?” if you get to understand or be aware of what really drives you, you will be able to accomplish goals till they become a reality of success. We all face stumbling blocks, at times we get to fall or pulled down by life situations as in most cases we hit the rock bottom of life and faced by failure smiling right back at you. At times you just feel to stop and not live another second to rise and try again, all because you went through failure after failure. Failures are just steps to take you closer to understanding that it’s possible, as nomatter how you fail and hit the ground don’t lose your drive. VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 17.07.2022

The thing that has kept me to give it a try after going through countless failures, is the drive in me of wanting to achieve and not throw in the towel. You need to understand that failure is your fuel to reach to that desired success at the end. You need not to lose the enthusiasm in you to see your life be a success story one day. When you fail today, don’t throw in the towel, rise up, dust yourself and walk again in your path to finish your walk of success. Cowards are never celebrated at all, so if you fail today, remember it’s not the end of the road, you need to keep trying again and again till you reach the top of the mountain. WHAT IS THE HUNDRED SAILORS?

he Hundred Sailors is an organization founded by Takudzwa Chikepe and has become a home to many -- different -- artists from different geographical locations etcetera. As they say; “love knows no boundaries,” so the same can be said about art, as strangers have become one, all in the spirit of art. The group carries a few handfuls of members, pocketful of souls and bucketful of love and the zeal to support the vision will mean that by the time we reach the end of the tunnel, the light will be held by many hands. The Hundred Sailors has different groups namely; VaChikepe and The Hundred Sailors, The Sailors Club, The Sailors Review Team (in charge of The Sailors Review which comes out fortnightly beginning), The Sailors Music Collection and also The International Sailors Affiliates.

VISION

Grooming world class artists through appreciating poetry and other forms of Art.

MISSION

Our mission is to publish the power of poetry and promote other forms of Art by creating a sustainable workstation for artists, to fully connect with each other and the world at large.

HOW TO JOIN main vhs THE GROUP

As regards subscribing and being part of The Hundred Sailors, new and existing members should each aim at paying USD24 for 2022. Starts with a deposit of USD6 or USD12 at first then consistently and flexibly paying USD2 at the start of each month. The required subscription fee is not for The Trust Fund board, but for The Hundred Sailors as it gives us the financial muscle to tackle any challenge which may be dressed in the costume which we may refer to as ‘need.’
