mouth from satisfied customers has played a major role. And now visitors from across the globe make their way to the shop which is stocking up for Christmas with the most attractive articles. t’s one of the smallest shops in Marlborough and yet the name is known across the world. Leathercraft of Hughenden Yard was started in Marlborough High Street 50 years ago by Jean and Roger Upton. They moved and it was among the first shops to be established in Hughenden Yard about 30 years ago. It hasn’t taken just the internet to spread its name far and wide. Word of

arlborough Town Council will on Monday receive a formal motion for financial provision of CCTV in the High Street. The motion will be put by Cr Hannaford-Dobson: “mindful of the increasing problems caused by criminal elements to both the traders and private citizens of the town, we propose that this council make financial provision in the 2013/14 budget for the installation of a CCTV system in the High Street, the cost of a suitable system not to exceed £20,000”. A second formal motion will be proposed by Cr Pitts: ‘This council welcomes the initiative to investigate the installation of a CCTV system in Marlborough and recognises the need to promote a community wide discussion and consultation of the issue. An evidence based, balanced report with clear objectives is vital to ensure that the right decision is made”. · Apex care specialises in providing reliable, high quality care and support to people living in their homes. · We enable people to remain in their own homes, and assist with maintaining and promoting their independence, knowing our quality service is there to support them.

T

he Adviser is publishing additional Winter Warmth features through popular demand today and next Friday, November 9. The traditional features enable companies to promote their products and services relating to winter warmth as temperatures fall. This feature has been made possible by: HUMPHRIES STONEMASONS specialising in fireplaces and wood stoves, open log burning fires and handmade limestone, marble and Bathstone fireplaces designed to your specifications at their workshops in Hungerford. For free quotes Tel. 01488 682847. GASTECH the independent gas specialists attend to servicing, repairs and installation of central heating. TEL. 01793 848800. W

e are always thinking ahead at Gastech and we know that, traditionally, the level of heating breakdowns drastically increase at the end of September. Many of the breakdowns we attend to at the start of the heating season could have been prevented by maintenance. Unfortunately, faults on the heating system do not show themselves until the cold weather arrives. By then, most gas engineers are busy, causing a delay of days to arrange a call out. Gastech are a local, family run business with more than 30 years’ experience in the gas industry. Based in Royal Wootton Bassett with a satellite office in Marlborough we always have an engineer available in your area. With increasing gas prices it is essential that your gas boiler is running properly to ensure it is safe and efficient. Our engineers are happy to service all gas and LPG boilers including warm air systems. Age of boiler is not a problem and we would be there to service it, not to tell you that it needs replacing. So, beat the rush. Call Gastech on 01793 848800 to book your heating service.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR LOGS

T

he biggest benefit that stoves have over open fires is their far superior efficiency. Burning wood on an open fire achieves an efficiency of only 20-25%, whereas a modern efficient stove, burning the same type of wood can achieve efficiency levels of over 75%. In other words you get more heat from the same amount of fuel. Many modern stoves also have “cleanburn” systems that burn and generate heat from gases given off by the burning wood, that would otherwise have escaped, unburnt, up the chimney. This is not only partly responsible for the great efficiency of stoves, but also results in fewer emissions and less soot. Humphries Stonemasons stock Parkray, Hunter, Ecoideal, Jetmaster, Termotech, Stuv and Fireline all Clean burn, all very efficient and most are DEFRA approved for smokeless zones. All Humphries’ installers are HETAS registered. -Christine Humphries Humphries Stonemasons

WIDE INTEREST IN FIRST AUCTION

H

ungerford Auctions staged its first sale recently and drew a wide interest from townsfolk as well as buyers from further afield. The first of the monthly sales which are held in the town hall featured antique furniture, ceramics and textiles as well as some quality oils and watercolours. “We had some silver items towards the end of the sale which were mainly horseracing trophies from the 1920s and 1930s”, said director Dennis Benneyworth. “Silver is fetching a good price on the markets at the moment so that kept the dealers hanging on to the bitter end with some of those items making a very respectable price”. Entries are open for the next sale which is on the 22nd November and any prospective vendors are advised to register their items over a week in advance of that date.

It’s particularly good to know that even now, when people have to be more careful than ever with their budgets, the importance of quality is still recognised as an essential consideration’.

MARLBOROUGH TOWN COUNCIL NOTES

P

lanning Committee: Chair of the committee, Cr. Graham Francis, announced that Wiltshire Council has refused planning permission to Marlborough College, for alterations to a gate and listed boundary wall. Marlborough Town Council had previously objected to the planning request, made to facilitate the installation of a pedestrian crossing which the Council believe is unnecessary.

FINE HUNGERFORD SHOP CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY

M

y How Time Flies! In the 30 odd years since Keith & Yvonne Haddrell had the first germ of an idea to open a greetings card, gift and toy shop many things have changed. Men have been to the moon, England has won the Ashes and we have had several changes of government. But some things never change. Inklings opened selling quality, good value products in a pleasant relaxed and friendly way. Some products may have changed but the Inklings ethos has not changed. Some of the many well known brands that are now stocked are the internationally known LSA glass, Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries, the ever popular Dunoon

In addition, most of the shops and businesses also have poppy boxes and collecting tins. On Sunday, 4th November there will be a display of military vehicles outside the Hungerford Arcade in aid of the Poppy Appeal. The money raised by the Appeal has been used to help local veterans and their dependants with mobility needs, respite care, and with minor adaptions to their homes. In addition a significant amount is used nationally by RBL for rehabilitation services for seriously wounded servicemen and women returning from Afghanistan. -Shelagh Parry

JEEVES & GREEN HAVE SPECIAL REASON TO CELEBRATE

L

ocal builders and contractors, Jeeves & Green Limited, have a special reason to celebrate their 5th anniversary in Hungerford, having just this week been nominated by their clients for the prestigious FMB Master Builder of the Year Awards 2012. The Federation of Master Builders is the largest trade association in Britain and over the past decade, these important awards have recognised the best builders in Britain – helping to ensure high quality construction in the industry. Above: Photo before work. This year, Jeeves & Green’s particular nomination is in the Below: The stunning finished project category of Large Residential/ Domestic Renovation Projects, for the successful remodelling and extension of a 1970’s built property, turning a functional but unattractive house into an outstanding and beautiful family home. Born in Henley on Thames, owner Robin Green spent over 20 years building in South Oxfordshire and London before moving to West Berkshire for family reasons and creating his new Hungerford based business in 2007. Despite the severe economic downturn of the past 5 years, his belief in expert craftsmanship combined with exceptional standards of work and sympathetic customer care has ensured that the Jeeves & Green team have never been without work, carrying out an extensive and varied range of projects from smaller property refurbishments and extensions to total remodelling and renovation projects. -Continued on page 7

World Web News SCHOOL TAKES MAJOR GREEN INITIATIVE

St John’s in Marlborough has installed energy-generating solar panels on the roof of its Atrium building, saving some £2,000 in energy costs each year. The 125 Polycrystalline Silicone Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels are hidden behind a parapet on the flat roof above the Sixth Form Common Room. The system will provide 31.25 kilowatts (kw) of electricitygenerating capacity, almost eight times the amount generated by a standard domestic PV array. The installation is expected to provide up to 30 000 kw/h (kilowatt hours) of electricity over a typical year. Martin Cook, St John’s Director of Logistics organised the installation of the PVs. Continued on page 11 continued from page 10... He explains why the system is such a positive move for the school: “One of the greatest benefits of this scheme is not just the production of free electricity; St John’s will be able to reduce its Carbon Footprint significantly through a direct reduction of our CO2 emissions of up to 15 000kg of CO2 per year. Additionally the £2,000 worth of electricity produced will provide a clear saving to our energy costs”. The installation project has been carried out as part of the British Gas ‘Energy for Tomorrow’ programme which is an independently run, nonprofit organisation dedicated to developing renewable energy sources and technologies for the future. St John’s is one of 150 schools around the country that have benefitted from having the PV system installed free of charge and making use of the free energy that is generated. The Government-funded Feed-In Tariff which supports renewable energy developments is paid to the ‘Energy for Tomorrow Fund’ and is then reinvested into more exciting projects like the one St John’s has benefitted from.

MARLBOROUGH TOWN COUNCIL NOTES Finance and Policy Committee The Council agreed to award a grant of £200 to the local branch of Alzheimer’s Support. A further £200 was awarded to Marlborough and District Junior Athletics Club. Cllr Andy Ross presented the half yearly accounts, commenting that the Council was on track to break even by the end of the financial year. The committee discussed the rising costs of maintenance and services and ways to reduce these. Cr. Stuart Dobson asserted that anyone hiring the Town Hall should remove their own rubbish, otherwise the cost falls on the Council. Mayor Edwina Fogg again expressed her disappointment with the Town Council website. Although some of the inaccuracies have now been corrected, the content still lacks vibrancy. Councillors agreed that a quality product was a priority and that they would invite local companies to tender. Keeping the revamped website up to date would be a task for the Town Clerk. -Shirley Pryor Wiltshire Wildlife Trust responds to the planned badger cull This autumn, trials will go ahead in the South West of England to test the suitability of controlled shooting as a method of culling badgers in an effort to combat the problem of bovine TB (bTB) in England, to test its practicality and cost. Wiltshire Wildlife Trust is very conscious of the hardship that bTB causes in the farming community. Indeed, the Trust itself is a farmer and has lost 11 cattle to bTB, 5 of those in September 2012. The need to find the right mechanisms to control the disease is vital. However, the predominant scientific view is that the cull will not work and could make the situation worse. A sustained programme of biosecurity measures and vaccination should be at the centre of efforts to tackle this terrible disease. The Trust is keen for the farming community, conservation organisations and the Government to continue to work together to confront bTB through the following measures: · Biosecurity: All possible measures should be pursued to prevent disease transmission on-farm. · Badger vaccination: Support landowners to use the injectable BadgerBCG vaccine. We also urge Defra to continue development of an oral badger vaccine. · Cattle vaccine: Complete development of a cattle vaccine and secure change to EU legislation; vaccination is currently prohibited because the skin test which tests for bTB in cattle cannot distinguish if cattle are infected with TB or have been vaccinated. Cattle that test positive for bTB cannot enter the food chain.

World Web News Hungerford’s Plume of Feathers pub helped its’ raise £2041 over the weekend towards the Rotary Club of Hungerford’s Charity Account, particularly for local causes and also for the Worldwide eradication of Polio. The Plume provided a magnificent supper to 126 guests in the Corn Exchange whilst they were being entertained by three National Artistes performing West End songs and music from the shows. President of rotary, Nick Fritz, was delighted to have attracted so many local people to the event which produced such a magnificent result all round. He commented that plans are now afoot to produce a St. Georges Day Supper in April 2013 to meet the many requests he received for another event..

STATION PRECINCTS PROGRESS DELAYED Two over-riding factors appear to be delaying progress of Hungerford’s railway station precincts development. These factors were again aired at the last meeting of Hungerford Town Council’s highways and transport committee. Firstly, the council needs a decision from Network Rail on the station boundaries and “ransom strip” alleged to be hindering progress. Secondly the council needs assurance that the rail service will be maintained when tenders for the service are sought next March. The meeting was told there was no guarantee that rail traffic would continue to expand if the service was reduced to a “shuttle service” from Newbury when electrification of the line between Paddington and Newbury was implemented. A special council committee was to meet on Wednesday to discuss the rail service. Delegates from Hungerford, Kintbury and Bedwyn were mentioned but there was no mention of Marlborough from where there is understood to be concern from people who use Bedwyn and Hungerford railway stations in preference to Swindon.

400 AT FUNERAL SERVICE More than 400 people crammed East Garston church with around 50 standing in the graveyard for the funeral of David Wallis on Monday. David, who originally farmed near Thatcham, in more recent years owned Dixon’s Farm at Lambourn Woodlands. He and his wife Wendy were immensely popular and this was evidenced by the funeral service attendance. In the last year of his life he was president of Hungerford Rotary Club and it was former Rotarian The “MORE POSITIVE HOUSING APPROACH” Reverend Sandy Railton who took his funeral service. Hungerford Town Council was looking to a more positive approach to housing development within the town, the mayor Cr Martin Crane told the last council highHUNGERFORD FAREWELLS GWYNNETH Hungerford farewelled the loyal and hard-working ways and transport committee meeting. HUNGERFORD COACH PARK DISCUSSION Hungerford Town Council’s highways and transport committee’s last meeting discussed a coach park in Charnham Street. The park would be at the current bus stop opposite The Sun Inn and would involve several extra parking spaces, the mayor, Cr Martin Crane said. The meeting also heard of a proposal for a coach park at Cobbs Farm and feeling was that if Cobbs wished to develop a coach park, they could consider it.

He said overall involvement in a local development plan would be too costly for the council. I am delighted to report that last night’s ‘Movies & Musicals’ night organised by The Rotary - Youth Opportunities Committee was a huge success – in many more ways than merely funds raised for Rotary Charities, although as you will see from the attached spreadsheet we have raised over £2,000.00 surplus! (Subject to all ticket monies having been paid) Everyone who attended was treated to a magnificent performance by West-End performers, Jayne O’Mahony, John Langley and Andrew Sackett. The Boeuf Bourguignon, buttery mashed potato and broccoli served up by Rotarian James Weir of The Plume of Feathers was truly magnificent – and almost everyone came up to specifically say so! Served with fresh crusty French sticks and butter with lemon cheesecake and coffee to finish – All this followed by an enthusiastic part II performance with audience participation and the most rousing selection of song tunes including Bond theme ‘Diamonds are forever’ If you weren’t there then you really did miss out – and you should be really disappointed, you would have loved it – as those who came will surely tell you!!

This is just a quick note to say that the resurfacing of the A4 Charnham Street was completed on Friday night and some of the road markings were replaced on Saturday. Unfortunately, the wet weather prevented completion of the white and yellow lines, so the contractor will return as soon as they have a dry day. There will shortly be a post-completion inspection of the works and any defects will be rectified by the contractor. We will also be sending a satisfaction questionnaire to residents and businesses later this week. Many thanks to everyone for your patience during this major project. If anyone has any queries, please let me know.

World Web News EAST SHEFFORD SEWAGE WORKS UPGRADED TO PROTECT GLOBALLY RARE CHALK STREAM

East Shefford sewage works has been upgraded to help improve the quality of water in the River Lambourn. Thames Water’s £2.14m of improvements have increased the capacity of the works and added another treatment process, further improving the water discharged into this treasured chalk waterway. Chalk streams are globally rare and the Lambourn, home to protected native species such as bullheads and brook lampreys, is a designated special area of conservation (SAC). During winter months the river can dry up completely and starting to run again in spring. This means that treated wastewater makes up an important amount of the flow and the upgrades will ensure that the outfall remains of an exceptionally high quality. Fly fishermen have been drawn to the stream’s exceptional clarity and the thriving shoals of wild brown trout and grayling. The river had been a well-kept fishing secret, but came to prominence after featuring in Howard Marshall’s 1967 book Reflections on a River. “Simple things - so many of them - make up the angler’s true delight. And all of them may be found on the banks of the little river Lambourn,” Marshall wrote. The East Shefford work supports Defra’s national ‘Love Your River’ campaign, which urges people and organisations everywhere to value their local rivers and look after them. Richard Aylard, Thames Water’s director of sustainability, said: “The works operate well at the moment, but what we’re doing is increasing the capacity to make sure it can continue to do so in the future. “Treated wastewater makes up part of the flow of the River Lambourn, so keeping the quality high, means a healthy river downstream.. “You can see this ‘knock-on’ effect, with all the bugs, birds and other wildlife that are thriving in this globally rare natural habitat. ” Environment minister, Richard Benyon, said: “We all love our rivers. They are the lifeblood of our country. They’ve shaped our landscape, and our towns and cities have been designed around them. They are vitally important for our everyday lives and our environment, and we’ve all got a role to play in making sure our rivers are as healthy as they can be. The project at East Shefford, sewage works, due to finish in December, involves installing a new storm tank. This will increase the amount of sewage the works can handle during heavy downpours, reducing the risk of the system becoming overwhelmed and discharging untreated sewage into the river. The project, which started in March, includes an additional tertiary treatment process. The new nitrifying sand filter will reduce the amount of ammonia and suspended solid material in the final effluent, making the final outflow into the river even cleaner.-Craig Rance, Thames Water.

COMMENT RE LINE SITUATION The next Friends of the Railway Path workday is on Sunday, 14th October. Workdays are an important way of helping to keep this much-loved local greenway looking good. This one will concentrate on the section south from Ogbourne St George, around and immediately south of the car park off Bytham Road (grid ref SU 1990 7407). The work is a mixture of ecological improvements, renovation and tidying. There is a patch of grassland which, with a little encouragement, we think can become more flower rich. We will clear this and remove the cuttings (so that they don’t release their nutrients back into the grassland). There is a hedge with gaps: we will remove scrub from the gaps and start planting up the gaps. We plan later to start laying sections of the hedge where the shrubs are large enough: this improves habitat for a variety of small animals. We will also clear round the car park and the woodland area to the east of the Path, and remove litter. If you would like to come, we will meet at 10.00 at the car park off Bytham Road (see the map attached below: grid ref SU 2037 7400). Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and stout footwear, and bring: · Lunch and a drink · Gardening gloves if you have some · Any hand tools which you think you would like to use. We will have a stock of tools for use on the day. You are welcome to just turn up on the day, and to stay for as long as you like. If you know in advance you would like to come, please let me know.

World Web News Hedgehog Hazards Some of the worst cases Wiltshire Wildlife Hospital have been treating are those involving slug pellet poisoning. They explained to the Adviser “The hedgehogs suffer terrible pain. People need to be aware that if they have hedgehogs in the garden there is no need to use slug pellets, even the animal friendly ones, supposedly harmless, can effect hedgehogs in this way”. The Hospital tell us that this is a dangerous time for the offspring, as they may not gain enough weight to survive the winter months. Members of the public should be aware of the plight of the autumn juvenile. Hedgehogs already being cared for that are not up to weight, are the ones needing overwintering and by the end of October the hedgehogs should weigh 650g to survive the winter. Advice can be misleading about weight, with 1lb (454g) sometimes being stated as sufficient, but Wiltshire Wildlife Hospital believe this is nowhere near enough for any hedgehog to survive. Last year they over-wintered 130 hedgehogs and annually they deal with between 600 and 700 hedgehogs. Hedgehogs are now being seen regularly in Coopers Meadow in Marlborough. The meadow is a mixture of mown, managed and wild habitat and it is thought that leaving some of the wild patches has encouraged them to breed there. Wiltshire Wildlife Hospital are a registered charity and be contacted on 07850 778752 “MORE POSITIVE HOUSING APPROACH” Hungerford Town Council was looking to a more positive approach to housing development within the town, the mayor Cr Martin Crane told the last council highways and transport committee meeting. He said there were areas within the town that could contain housing and moves were under way to appoint a professional consultant. He said overall involvement in a local development plan would be too costly for the council. HIGHWAYS AND TRANSPORT BUDGET Hungerford Town Council’s highways and transport committee has a budget of £42,000 for 20132014.

SIR JOHN MADEJSKI TO SWITCH ON LIGHTS? Sir John Madejski will be invited by Hungerford Town Council to switch on Hungerford’s Christmas lights on Sunday, December 2. “Mr Christmas Lights” Rod. Desmeules told the last Hungerford Town Council highways and transport committee meeting he was ready to press ahead with the lights programme and would need volunteers to help. The meeting was told it was planned to offset costs with sales of Christmas cards, calendars and a prize draw. Hungerford’s Christmas lughts have been the envy of many centres in recent years, largely due to Mr Desmeules’ efforts.

MARLBOROUGH FUNDRAISING EVENING TO SUPPORT LOCAL LIFE SAVERS A charity dance at Marlborough Town Hall next month will raise funds for the local life saving work of St John Ambulance. The dance on 20 October, featuring the band Celebration, is being organised by volunteers from the charity’s Pewsey Division and Marlborough Community First Responders - volunteers who provide emergency medical aid in the Marlborough area ahead of the arrival of an ambulance. Organiser Kev Dickens says: ‘At last year’s dance everyone had a fantastic time while knowing they were helping us to provide a service which is so often the difference between life and death.’ The money raised from this year’s event will go towards equipping the local community with basic first aid skills as well as supporting the Community First Responders and local St John Ambulance volunteers. The event will also provide an opportunity for people to find out more about learning first aid and volunteering. Kev says: ‘Our research shows up to 140,000* people a year die needlessly in situations where first aid could have saved them. We’re determined to change that appalling statistic by getting as many people as possible to learn first aid.’ The evening starts at 8.30pm.
