Bowman Antiques Fair at Stafford Bingley Hall Part of the wide appeal of the Stafford Bingley Hall Antiques Fair is the massive number and variety of items for sale provided by dealers from across the UK.

Bowman Antiques Fairs celebrated 40 years of organising antiques fairs last year. Their very popular fair at Stafford started in 1978 in the Bingley Hall at a time when there were very few Antiques fairs and almost all were limited in size. Even today, the Bingley Hall, which is almost the size of three football pitches would be a challenge for any antiques fair organiser to take on. In the 1970s when fairs were few it was a brave decision to start a fair there. Bowman Antiques Fairs was started by Elizabeth Bowman who was originally a dealer. She grew up in the Potteries and acquired a love of ceramics through family connections with the factories of Stoke on Trent. Elizabeth was already organising fairs across the north of England, when it was suggested she try a venue in Staffordshire. On a visit to Staffordshire, Elizabeth and her husband Peter drove past the Staffordshire County Showground and noticed the Bingley Hall. That first event in October 1978 was well supported by visitors and dealers and Bowman Antiques Fairs have been running successful popular events at the Bingley Hall ever since. 12

Stands vary from those selling precious jewellery and other expensive items from cabinets and room set stands displaying furniture and pictures to displays of interesting and affordable items from the 19th and 20th centuries. The Stafford Bingley Hall Fairs are 6 times a year with the best selection of antiques, vintage, curios, retro and collectables in the West Midlands. The next event is on Friday, Saturday, Sunday 7th/8th/9th March. Opening times 10am-5pm each day.

Spencer Celebrate their 10th Anniversary The Jeweller

customers over the years by designing and making their dream pieces a reality: Customers usually bring along ideas, sketches and images to help us create a unique piece. David has created everything from lavishly flamboyant styles to simple, classic designs. “We can help customers design a piece of jewellery which is perfect for them in any precious metal and source any stone of their choosing. Equally we can transform vintage jewellery into more wearable, modern styles, so that family pieces can be given a new lease-of-life.”

It’s no surprise that Spencer The Jeweller is celebrating its tenth year in business in Eccleshall this April. The family-run business offers a refreshing alternative to the usual names by providing a specialist service in bespoke jewellery design. With every individual piece created on-site by skilled jewellers, customers can be assured of both supreme quality and unique rarity when it comes to every request. With 17 years of experience working at Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, owner David Spencer was keen to set his store apart from the competition: “I started the business back in 2004, with my wife Angela. Our intention was to bring a piece of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter to Eccleshall” “I was determined that my customers would receive excellent service and I wanted to ensure that bespoke jewellery was available to everyone, regardless of their budget.”

Everything is made and attended to in-house, whether it be for repairs, sizing or maintenance. And there is also plenty to browse in store, including a range of watches from leading brands - Citizen and Rotary - as well as a vast choice of engagement and dress rings, bracelets and necklaces - all of which are predominantly British-made. There’s also a large selection of pearls and a collection of Hot Diamonds Jewellery. Thanks to a small and personable environment, exceptional customer service is guaranteed: “There’s always a jeweller on-site, so no matter what time you call in you can be assured you’ll get the service and advice you need.” Special offers and discounts will be running in-store as part of the 10th Anniversary celebrations.

Through A Glass Darkly A Quick Guide To Tinted Lenses Everyone knows (or should know!) that not wearing a seatbelt or using a mobile phone while driving is against the law, but how about driving when wearing certain spectacles lenses? Fortunately, like all of the regulations that govern a driver’s eyesight, the law is based on common sense principles intended to minimise the risk of accidents. So, driving in anything other than lightly-tinted lenses at night is illegal and driving in extremely dark tinted lenses is prohibited at any time. That doesn’t mean you need to abandon your sunglasses, as most ordinary types have an absorption factor of around 75% (or 25% transmission) and this rule only applies to tints of 92% or more. The other restriction on lenses applies to the lens ‘type’ – i.e. whether they actually have a distance vision component. If you drive in your reading glasses you are asking for trouble and probably invalidating your insurance! There are a few reasons for tinting spectacle lenses: • As a cosmetic enhancement for personal preference or clinical requirement. • To assist in cases of ‘photophobia’ (light-sensitivity) caused by injury, eye infection or an operation. • To provide more comfortable vision in bright conditions. • For specific sports or occupations.

ideal. These days almost all lenses are made in plastic, which can be dyed to the colour and depth of your choice. Sunglasses are usually supplied with neutral grey, brown or green lenses to avoid colour-distortion and, whether off-the-shelf or made to prescription, are legally required to block 100% of ultraviolet radiation (UV-A and UV-B). Photochromic lenses, those that darken in sunlight, have been around since the 1960’s when Pilkington’s ‘Reactolite’ brand came to the market. As with ordinary tints, today’s photochromics are almost exclusively plastic rather than glass, are available in grey or brown and will change from almost clear indoors to about 80% tint in full sun. Polarised lenses are useful where reflected light is ‘scattered’, such as from the surface of water or on snow. In these conditions it can be extremely difficult to see clearly and a polarizing lens will filter out some of the ‘scatter’. They are of most benefit to skiers, watersports enthusiasts and anglers. They can be made in prescription form but are more expensive than most types of tinted lens as the polarizing sheet has to be laminated between two clear prescription layers. For free, no obligation advise about any type of tinted lens, pop in to your local Direct Specs or give us a call.

Cosmetic tints tend to be around 10% - 20% absorption and can be applied in almost any colour. When glass lenses were prevalent, the tint had to be added when the glass was made or applied as a coating afterwards, neither of which were 16

Stafford Sinfonia’s first concert of 2014! Stafford Sinfonia are performing on Saturday, March 22nd at Rising Brook Baptist Church. Our Director of Music always strives to include much variety in our programmes, and, I think you will agree, this March concert is no exception. The overture La Cenerentola (Cinderella) is one of the most tuneful of all Rossini overtures. The leader of the orchestra, Mandy Hallam, is the soloist in the violin Romance by Beethoven, and the programme also includes a fine concerto by Gustav Holst for flute and oboe. This work gets few performances nowadays but it is a testament to the fact that Holst wrote music equally as good as his famous “Planets” suite. This double concerto was composed simply because he wanted to write something “with fewer notes” ! Schubert`s Symphony No.3 gets performed a great deal and is recognised as his most melodic of all. Admission £9.00 on the door includes refreshments. The concert starts at 7.30pm. May we look forward to seeing you there.

Blessed William Howard Catholic High School

Stock trading competition winner makes over £34k virtual profit

James Millington (14) has won an in-school stock trading competition by making more than £34,300 virtual profit over a 14 week period. Forty-three Year 9 students from Blessed William Howard Catholic High School took part in the competition as part of their Economics and Business Studies GCSE course. The share price contest ran alongside lessons on investing in businesses through trading shares. Each student was given £100,000 in virtual money and asked to invest in five companies of their choice. Every week the competition was updated with real stock trends being added to the results and students had the opportunity to trade shares in their businesses dependant on their performance.

28

“The students really found this exercise engaging. It captured their imagination whilst also teaching them some very useful numeric and analysis skills.” commented Mr Nolan, Curriculum Leader for Business and Economics. James was awarded first prize which was a Tesco Hudl. Second prize, an Ipod shuffle, went to Billy Ravenscroft who managed to make £34, 241 profit with Daniel Pearce close behind in third place with £34,208 profit and a prize a £20 Amazon gift voucher. This exercise was also used as a progress tool for the students’ course as assessment marks were used to give bonuses to those who performed at or above their target. Stafford and Stone School Sport Partnership Futsal Competition The last few months have been action packed for the Stafford and Stone School Sport Partnership as five futsal tournaments have taken place which have engaged up to 180 young people. The year 7 boy’s tournament consisted of two semi-finals before the final took place at King Edwards VI on Tuesday 28th January. Five teams progressed to the final, before Blessed William Howard Catholic High School were crowned victorious ahead of a tight battle for second, Christ Church Academy, and third place, King Edward VI. The year 7 girl’s tournament saw 6 teams from different schools across the Stafford and Stone area compete for the one place to progress through to the upcoming county final. The 1-0 victory St. Dominic’s, Stone, had over Walton Priory Middle School was in the end the result that enabled them to win the tournament and to pip Walton Priory into second place. As with the year 7 boys’, semi-finals also took place for the year 8 and 9 boy’s. Weston Road, Walton Priory, King Edward VI and Stafford Grammar progressed through to the final. The high scoring final eventually saw Stafford 32

Grammar School piped to first place by Weston Road Academy. A year 8 and 9 girl’s futsal tournament also took place in January over at King Edwards VI School. The highly competitive tournament saw each team take points off each other which ensured a close battle for the top position. The final placing’s saw the hosts King Edwards VI finish 3rd, Walton Priory 2nd and Sir Graham Balfour 1st. In addition to the Sainsbury’s School Games Futsal tournaments, this was the first year that a local tournament was hosted for the Year 10 and 11 age groups. This tournament of six teams was played in a great spirit and showcased the local footballing talent that is currently within the district. The final standings saw Alleyne’s narrowly pushed into 3rd place on goal difference by Blessed William Howard High School, who finished in 2nd place overall. King Edwards VI however, the winners of this tournament, not only won each game that they played, but they didn’t concede a goal in any of their five matches. The competitive nature of each tournament was highly commendable as was the team work shown by all teams. The Stafford Directory | 01785 318704

THE WEB PAGE Each month, local web design company The Red Box bring you top tips and ideas for you if you or your business has an online presence. Their business writer Jane Bewick Green has 13 years’ experience at running online businesses and engaging online communities. She and the Red Box team will be sharing with you the benefit of their combined expertise. If you open a shop to the public you have to follow certain rules and regulations before you trade. For example, you might need to make alterations to provide access for wheelchair users. Well, when you launch a business website there are laws you must follow as well. Failure to do so could result in a hefty fine.

This month: Your Website and The Law EU Cookie Law - Have you noticed the pop ups on websites you visit asking to agree to their cookie policy? Since May 2011 all websites should have this notification – telling site users how the website uses and stores personal information about the user. It may be to help you navigate the site more quickly, or to remember your login next time you visit. Either way, the EU has decided that you the site owner must have a cookie use policy and must tell site users about it. Failure to comply with the law could result in a fine of up to £500,000. For more information about the policy visit the ICO’s website: http://www.ico.org.uk

The Equality Act - Is your website accessible to people with a disability, for example the partially sighted? If not, then it could be considered discriminatory. The Act is 'anticipatory', which means you cannot wait until a disabled person wants to use your services. You must think in advance (and on an ongoing basis) about what disabled people with a range of impairments (sight loss, hearing loss, mobility and cognitive impairments) might reasonably need. For more information, visit: http://www.rnib.org.uk

Your business details online - Since 2007, all companies must have their business details, ie: the place of registration, the registered number and the registered office address clearly visible on the website. This includes emails as well. For more information visit: http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk Consumer Laws - If you’re selling goods online then you must make sure you follow consumer rights laws. Failure to do so could be expensive and could even see your business site closed. Random checks by Trading Standards officials on sites in Scotland in 2013 found more than 50% were not compliant. For more information about what you need to do, visit: https://www.gov.uk If you would like expert advice on setting up your e-commerce site, call The Red Box on 01785 248101
