Wow Santa had a busy time with his helpers from the Rotary Club of Stafford Castle! Thanks to the generosity of the folks of Stafford a brilliant sum of £8500 was collected for local charities. As well as being out on his sleigh Santa visited Walton Hall School, Silkmore and Castlechurch Primary Schools, Greenhall Nursery, Riding for Disabled at Dunston Heath and the elderly folks at Compton Close and Tithe Barn Court. He also made an appearance at the Katharine House

Monday 18th will feature outdoor enthusiast and TV presenter Julia Bradbury and renowned wine critic and TV personality, Jilly Goolden. Ross Edwards, managing director of Travelworld Motorhomes said: “We are very excited to be opening our doors to everyone. The event will take place at Creswell Park, located just off junction 14 of the M6, and situated on a fiveacre site. Stafford Camera Club FEBRUARY EVENTS

On 12 February the club are lucky to welcome Dr Michael Leach, the full-time wildlife author and photographer. Michael has travelled to all 7 continents and has worked with many of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most charismatic animals - polar bears in the arctic, gorillas in central Africa, lemurs in Madagascar, sperm whales in the mid-Atlantic, monkeys in the Amazon, penguins in the Antarctic and elephants in Kenya. Michael has appeared frequently on both TV and radio. He holds a Doctorate of Science (DSc) and is a Fellow of the Royal Geo-graphical

Society (FRGS). He has written more than 1000 articles for publications including: Observer Magazine, BBC Wildlife, BBC Country File Magazine. He is also the author of 30 Books, with subjects ranging from Apes and Big Cats to Owls and Bears. Photography & Film-work Michaelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s photographs have been published in 3000 + books and in every major wildlife and environmental magazine in the world. He has been a Wildlife cameraman for more than 150 TV natural history films including World About Us, Really Wild Show, Wildtrack.

His talks are noted for a marriage of memorable images and wry observa-tional humour. P L AY “ T H E F I N A L T E S T ” To open 2019 Stafford players are presenting The Final Test. It is a play by highly-acclaimed novelist Chris Paling; a touching & poignant comedy about marriage, cricket, and the dangerous lure of Bexhill-on-Sea. Peter & Ruth have had a long, happy marriage. So Peter believes. They have their own interests – he listens to cricket on the radio, she travels. But all is not well as Peter discovers when he’s in his deckchair, listening to the final test from The Oval. Ruth announces the sale of the house from under him and she’s moving to the coast with her lover. When the new owners move in later that day they discover they have more than they bargained for; an elderly, cricket-loving squatter who refuses to move out of their garden.

“The Game”, takes two small roles in this production; including a tango-dancing policeman!

The play runs from Tuesday February 12th to Saturday February 16th at 7.30pm in the Malcolm The play is directed by Ray Braziel, whose previous productions include “The Road Hill House Murder” and “Lord Arthur Saville’s Crime”. For the parts of Peter and Ruth, Stafford Players have reunited, on stage, David Forbes and Katherine Greenhalgh. They appeared as Mr and Mrs Hawthorn in the Players’ Award Winning “Hindle Wakes” in February 2017. Jordan Wingfield and Jo Bradley play the young couple Ray and Susan. M A K E A DAT E TO J O I N T H E R AC E F O R L I F E I N S TA F F O R D People in Stafford are being encouraged to get the year off to a great start by making a date to join Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone in the area – women, men and children - to join the Race for Life. There are events for people of all ages and abilities taking place at Weston Park on Saturday 4th May 2019. Kirsten Shore, Cancer Research UK’s Stafford Event Manager, said: “Our Race for Life events are fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting. They help people with cancer by raising money for research, including clinical trials which give patients in Stafford access to the latest treatments.

“Our Race for Life events have been women-only since they started, over 25 years ago. But we now feel the time is right to open them up so that everyone - women, men and children – has the chance to participate together.

She added: “You don’t have to be sporty to take part. You don’t need to train or compete against anyone else. All you need to do is go to the Race for Life website, pick an event, sign up and then have fun raising money in whatever way you like.”

Kirsten continued: “We’re urging mums, dads, nans, grandpas, brothers, sisters, friends and workmates to show their support by joining the Race for Life. It’s a perfect example of everyday people doing an extraordinary thing – uniting in a common cause to beat cancer.”

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research. Once again the residents of Baswich, Saxonfields, Knowle Rd and Hillcroft Park Stafford have kindly donated food for the needy of Stafford and surrounding areas. On Sunday January 13th, members of Stafford Lions Club, Friends of Lions and Stafford’s 21st Century Explorer Scouts were out collecting, sorting and delivering the food that kind people had left out at the end of their drives. In all, 111 bags were filled and numerous large boxes were made up. These were then delivered to some needy and elderly of Stafford and surrounding areas; to young people who were starting out on their own after leaving Foster Care; to Social Services and the Probation Service. There were also a number of boxes taken to The Salvation Army, Women’s Aid and to the Signpost Food Bank at Highfields. Thanks once again to St Anne’s RC Church for allowing us to use their church hall. For Stafford Lions along with the lovely young people from the Scouts, it’s a full day of working together, enjoying good company, and helping people in need.

INGREDIENTS 300g plain flour 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 4 tbsp coca powder 235g butter softened, plus extra for greasing 300g caster sugar 3 medium eggs, beaten 200ml buttermilk 11/2 tsp vanilla extract 2tbsp liquid red food colouring CHOCOLATE ICING 140g plain chocolate, in pieces 75g butter, diced 75ml double cream FROSTING 55g unsalted butter, softened 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 115g icing sugar, sifted 115g full-fat soft cheese 1tbsp mini chocolate chips to decorate

METHOD

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4. Grease the bases of 3 x 20cm round sandwich tins. Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and cocoa powder into a bowl and set aside. Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and beat until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs and then the buttermilk, vanilla extract and red food colouring. Fold in the sifted flour mixture. Divide the mixture evenly between the tins. Bake for 25-30 minutes until firm to the touch. To make the chocolate icing put the chocolate and butter in a large heatproof bowl and set over a pan of simmering water until melted. Cool for 2-3 minutes and then stir in the cream. Leave at room temperature for 20 minutes and then chill for 30 minutes until the icing thickens. To make the frosting place the butter in a bowl and beat in vanilla extract. Gradually beat in the icing sugar until blended, and then beat in the soft cheese. Sandwich all three sponges together with two thirds of the frosting and all of the chocolate icing. Spread the rest of the frosting around the sides and over the top of the cake.

Sprinkle the cake with chocolate chips and chill in the fridge until ready to serve.
