Shed and Outbuilding Security

Mark it, lock it and check it. Sheds are popular targets for burglars as they are often overlooked when security is being considered. If you store valuables or tools in them, you should secure these as well! Even if there isn’t anything of value in your shed or garage, burglars can use equipment stored in them such as forks, chisels and screwdrivers, to break into your home. Some simple tips can help make your shed less vulnerable to an opportunist thief: •

Make sure that your shed door, door frame and walls are solid.

Replace any damaged or rotten areas with new sections.

Try to place the shed door facing your house and not too close to a perimeter wall or gate.

Consider keeping valuable items in a strong lockable box or cage.

Fit two closed shackle padlocks on strong padlock hasps - one a third of the way up from the bottom of the door and one a third of the way down from the top of the door.

Fit wire mesh or bars on the inside of your window frames.

Wrap a strong chain around and through the handles of garden tools, lawn mowers, cycles etc and secure the chain to the wall using a padlock or a ground anchor fixed to the base of the shed. Consider integrating your shed into your home

alarm system, especially if you have valuable items in it. Use door contact sensors and check your glass is secure before installing break glass sensors.

Illuminate the area around your shed using dusk till dawn lighting.

Securing your tools as well as your shed will reduce the risk of theft. It is likely to deter a burglar if items are difficult to move. •

Store tools in a locking metal cabinet; do not use office cabinets as the locks are weak. Use a good quality closed shackle padlock and secure the cabinet to the shed using strong bolts or heavy duty screws.

Secure tools such as spades and garden forks, or lawnmowers and strimmers together with a strong chain and good quality closed shackle padlock.

If you have a solid concrete base, use a motorcycle security rated ground anchor to secure the chain.

If you do not a have concrete floor, secure the chain using a shed anchor.

Mark your power tools and advertise that they are marked.

You can register your power tools and other items for free at www.Immobilise.com

Local Fitness Group Take The Plunge TO R A ISE £1000 FO R LO CA L CH A R I T Y A C HI L D O F M I NE

Sunday 17th March saw a team of 20 crazy individuals from the Stafford based personal training facility, This is Fitness, head to Millers Vale in Derbyshire to abseil off an 80 ft bridge all in the name of charity. Millers Dale is a valley on the River Wye in the popular beauty spot in the Peak District. This is Fitness organised the mammoth abseil for their chosen charity A Child of Mine as one of their many fundraising events throughout the year. The abseil proved a big challenge for many and weather conditions helped make the experience a little more interesting with snow and hail in the mix. Founder and Chief Executive of A Child of Mine, Gayle Routledge, who accepted the challenge and joined the team said: “This was a huge personal challenge for me but one that I am delighted to have conquered. I am so honoured that This Is Fitness have chosen A Child Of Mine to support this year and the money raised will make a big difference to the charity and the work we do. We cannot thank Liam and Hayley enough for all of their continued support towards A Child of Mine.” Owner of This Is Fitness, Liam Brice said: “What a fantastic day. It’s always a great pleasure

8

to bring people together for a challenge or activity which is something a little out of the ordinary. From overcoming personal fears to working together as part of a Team the group all got stuck in and tested their comfort zones. We’re thrilled with the amount we raised for the challenge and we can’t thank the abseilers themselves and their friends, families and fellow members for their generosity. Without them the event wouldn’t have been such a success and we wouldn’t have been able to raise such a fantastic amount for A Child of Mine.” The money raised will go towards supporting local families who have lost a child by providing emotional support

and access to vital information. The support A Child of Mine offers increases wellbeing, improves emotional health and provides access to much needed information, guidance and support.

A Child of Mine is a registered

charity, based in Stafford, supporting families across the Midlands and UK and working alongside healthcare professionals when a child has died. We work passionately to

deliver services locally for families

who have lost a child at any age or circumstance. A Child of Mine is

100% funded by the general public.

Cadets to become anti-sexting ambassadors

The schools that have taken part in the anti-sexting project are Cannock Chase High School, Cardinal Griffin Catholic College, Chase Terrace Technology School and Staffordshire University Academy,

The Cannock cadets unit will become the pilot for the ‘Your Body, Your Rules’ project, which will then hopefully be rolled out across all ten cadet units across the county.

The Deputy Commissioner said: ‘Sexting is increasingly becoming normal among teenagers, but that one moment of madness could have a huge impact for the rest of their lives.

Developed by Cannock and District Soroptimists and supported by Deputy Commissioner Sue Arnold, the project has already seen 13 anti-sexting ambassadors trained across 4 schools with plans for more.

‘The Soroptimists recognised this and developed this excellent project to make young people think twice before clicking that button. We want them to think about the full potential consequences of their actions which could haunt them for years to come.’

Plan

Design

Build

Trish Mellor of Cannock and District Soroptimists said: ‘When we began this project we had no idea where it would go. Thanks to the enthusiasm and efforts of staff and ambassadors the schools report a much healthier attitude towards sending ‘nudes’ along with a willingness to discuss the issue.’. The Soroptimists delivered training sessions to pupils on the risks, both legal and emotional, of sending naked or near naked images. The club also encouraged year 11 and 12 pupils in the area to become ambassadors – sharing information with their peers and pointing them to appropriate adults where necessary.

Hold Onto Your Bonnets S TA F F O R D P L AY E R S A R E B A C K !

Celebrating the finale of their 75th year, Stafford Players are taking a stroll through the streets of Cranford. This much-loved story by novelist and social warrior Elizabeth Gaskell was first published by Charles Dickens between 1851 and 1853, then adapted for the stage by Martyn Coleman. Audiences will encounter familiar faces in a cast made up of nine women and two men, such as Denise Arthur, Barbara Horton, Brenda Hunt and Keith Minshull. New members Bronwyn Jennings and Linet Carter join the company, with Jo Bradley making her directorial debut with the Players. “I’ve loved the story of Cranford all my life,” explains Jo, “and I’m amazed by the cast, who have already formed a team as strong as the original friends in the novel. Rehearsals are such fun, and we’re really enjoying the journey we’re taking together, exploring Elizabeth Gaskell’s world.” This is no ordinary period drama, concerned only with romantic liaisons and well-worn plots. Cranford introduces a world of quiet courage, intense loyalties, and relationships based on love. Love which, though rarely expressed through words, is demonstrated through the kindness of friends, the bravery of ordinary people, and the humour found in every possible situation. Meet the ladies of Cranford, united by an unshakable confidence in the capability of women, the power of shared information, and the importance of maintaining a dignified elegance in the face of adversity. Visit a 19th century town full of charm, humour, and excitements including a gang of marauding burglars, controversial headgear, and an unexpected matrimonial match.

Performances begin at 7.30pm. Tickets are £11, concessions £10. Prices include the Gatehouse booking fee. To purchase tickets, go to www. staffordgatehousetheatre.co.uk or ring 01785 619080. To keep up to date with events in Cranford, follow Twitter@staffplayers, www.facebook.com/ staffordplayers, Instagram (staffordplayers17), or explore www.staffordplayers.co.uk to avoid missing out on current and future events. Leave behind the disruption and division of today’s world, and lose yourself in Cranford - the little town which reminds us of the love, generosity, courage and humour which unite a community, and make true neighbours of us all.

“Cranford” will be performed in the Malcolm Edwards Theatre (MET) at Stafford Gatehouse, from Tuesday May 14th to Saturday May 18th.

Stafford Sleep Out F R I D AY 1 7 T H M AY 2 0 1 9

The Rotary Club of Stafford, in partnership with Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group are delighted to announce a sponsored ‘Sleep Out’ event, which will take place on Friday 17 May 2019 at Stafford College’s town centre campus. Participants will brave the elements for a challenging 12 hour stint, as they bed down to raise awareness of homelessness whilst also raising much needed funds to help prevent it happening in the first place. Gwyn Williams, Chair of the Organising Group said: “This is a new event for Rotary in Stafford and our aim is to support young people to make safer life choices by providing resilience-building education sessions to pupils, their parents and teachers. Mental illness affects people from all walks of life, and we felt that holding a sponsored ‘Sleep Out’ would be a good way of highlighting the issues faced by homeless people. The community-based prevention work delivered by Re-Solv (www.re-solv.org/stafford) and funded by Stafford Borough Council fits extremely well with this sponsorship event”. Stephen Ream, Director of Re-Solv said: “We are so grateful for the support from Rotary which allows us to extend our community prevention work in Stafford Borough and reach more young people and their families. Prevention work at an early age is vital to build resilience and improve long-term outcomes.” The money raised from the ‘Sleep Out’ event will support Re-Solv by allowing them to provide additional resources and prevention sessions to local primary schools, enabling young people to make safer life choices. • £10 raised would pay for resilience-building resources for 10 pupils • £50 would pay for an information and awareness workshop for parents • £100 would pay for a prevention session with a class of 30 pupils. Stafford Rotary Club is very grateful to Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) for their tremendous support, without which this event would not have been possible. Karen Dobson OBE, Principal and Chief Executive of Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Rotary Club of Stafford and Re-solv by becoming the host venue for the inaugural ‘Stafford Sleep Out’. We hope that the event will bring together people of all ages from across the Borough to highlight the issue of homelessness and raise money to fund community prevention outreach work in local primary schools.”

14

‘Sleep Out’ participants will be welcomed on to the courtyard at Stafford Colleges’ Victoria Square campus at 6pm on Friday 17 May. They will be provided a cardboard mat on arrival and can bring along more cardboard and plastic sheeting to build a shelter for the night, until the 12hour event draws to a close at 6am. Limited places are available so early registration is encouraged – a £10 registration fee, which will be added to donations, will secure a bed space. Participants are encouraged to set a personal target to raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship, however, it is appreciated that for students this may not be possible, but others may be able to raise more. Once participants are registered, they will be encouraged to set up a fundraising page with Virgin Money Giving at: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/charity-web/charity/ displayCharityCampaignPage.action?campaignId=8005&ch arityId=100507 More information, registration and off-line sponsorship forms are available at www.staffordrotaryclub.org.uk or from Helen Perren from the Rotary Club of Stafford on telephone number: 07949 079174 or email: helen.perren@btconnect.com Rotary is a global charitable organisation committed to work for others less fortunate. Our moto is - Service above Self. Each individual club is committed to raise funds but also to enjoy one another’s friendship and to socialise. Rotary has worked constantly towards the elimination of polio world wide while also providing much needed equipment and funds for local charities. The Stafford Rotary Club has recently celebrated its 94th year in the town. The club meet every Wednesday lunchtime and new members are most welcome. If you feel you want to put back something into society while making new friends and enjoying fellowship please contact us. Call Gwyn Williams on 07970 447728.

What, a Knot?

R O TA R Y C L U B O F S TA F F O R D Why has this knot appeared outside St Marys? Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Stafford Knot, assisted by Street Scene, planted these purple crocuses to draw attention to the “Purple4Polio’ campaign. Todays youngsters have probably never heard of this crippling disease which, once contracted, cannot be cured - although it can be immunised against. For over 30 years, Rotary and its members have been committed to fighting to eradicate polio across the world. Purple4Polio initiative is one launched by Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland to raise funds and awareness for our efforts to eradicate polio across the world and promote the work of our global campaign, End Polio Now. When a child receives their life saving polio drops on mass polio immunisation days in many countries their little finger is painted with a purple dye so it is clear they have received their life saving vaccine. Rotary’s pledge for a polio free world was made in 1985 when there were 125 polio endemic countries and a

thousand new cases every single day. So far, this year, there are less than 10 cases in the entire world, but as long as there is one single case anywhere children everywhere are at risk. Thanks to Rotary, and the support of our partners WHO, Unicef, CDC and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, there are now just three countries still classed as endemic: Pakistan, Nigeria and Afghanistan. To finish the job over 2 billion doses of oral polio vaccine have to be administered each and every year in over 60 countries until the world is finally certified polio free.

National Trust Staffordshire Centre

W H AT D O W E D O A N D H O W D I D T H E C E N T R E S TA RT ? In October 1972 a group of National Trust members in Staffordshire got together with the idea of forming a facility for members to get together using their common interest in the National Trust. 200 people attended the Inaugural Meeting in March 1973. Since we were the first such organisation to be set up in Staffordshire we adopted the name ‘National Trust Staffordshire Centre’. Since that time members in other parts of the county have formed their own groups and so the area from which we draw our membership has shrunk somewhat.

In order to record the activities of the Centre a Newsletter was first published in the Summer of 1979. This and subsequent Newsletters can be read by looking at our website - www.ntstaffscentre. uwclub.net/Index.htm. The most recent Newsletters also contain the programme of talks, walks and outings as well as reports of the activities. All contributions to the Newsletter are by our own members. The Centre exists to give an extra dimension to National Trust members, but talks and walks are open to anyone living in the Staffordshire area.

Trip of a lifetime

F O R B ROT H E R A N D S I S T E R S C O U T S Two students from Blessed William Howard Catholic High School have made it through a rigorous selection process to be chosen to represent Staffordshire and Stafford District Scouts on a trip of a lifetime. The trip to Ghana will take place in 2020. For brother and sister team, Reece (15) and Mia Watkins (13), this trip is a fantastic opportunity to make a difference in a third world country. They will be involved in building schools, teaching and supplying other resources to some of the poorest communities. The students’ first challenge is to raise the funds to cover the costs of the

trip, £2300 each. Blessed William Howard school has already donated £250 to each of the students from a special

Endowment Fund to kick-start their fundraising.

“We are very proud of Mia and Reece for making it through the selection process.

Involvement

with such a large charitable project really fits in with our Catholic

school ethos and as such we will be supporting them as much as we

can to ensure that they meet their

fundraising target,” commented Mr Karl Brown, Principal at Blessed William Howard.

The

students’

first

fundraising

initiative is a giant Easter egg raffle. Tickets are available from the school office at just 20p each.

We are specialists in installing loft ladders and hatches for easy and safe access to your loft. We also provide boarding, lighting and insulation solutions. This ‘Spring Clean’ time we can help you turn your lost space into really useful loft space.

Itching to Stitch

T H E LO C A L B R A N C H O F T H E E M B RO I D E R E R S ’ G U I L D We are the local branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild, meeting on the second Wednesday of each month except for August. We meet from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at Rising Brook Methodist Church, Stafford ST17 9LT. We welcome anyone interested in textile arts and crafts. Our programme includes talks and hands-on workshops with the occasional Saturday day school which takes place at the Guide Hut, Westbridge Park, Stone ST15 8QW. For further information please email: secretaryseg@virginmedia. The Embroiderers’ Guild is a national organisation that welcomes people who are just getting started. You may be forgiven for thinking that if it is called a ‘Guild’ it is stuffy, exclusive and you would not qualify. Nothing could be further from the truth. A warm welcome awaits. We also welcome those who are already stitching and are keen to do more or expand their horizons. Our next few evening meetings are: Wednesday 8th May Pretty Pockets led by Iva Davies – a Stitching workshop. Wednesday 12th June Beading led by Spellbound Beads – talk and workshop.

Wednesday 10th July Natural Dyeing led by Mandy Robinson – talk and workshop. Saturday 15th June Day School on Beautiful Textile Surfaces led by Judith Rowley. Our branch also holds drop in sessions at Stafford Hobbycraft on the third Friday of each month. Our next one is 17th May from 10am to 12noon. These are free and people just bring items they are working on. It is an opportunity to sit and stitch with friends, share ideas and get tips on various techniques. The Embroiderers’ Guild is a national organisation with a large collection of embroideries that can be viewed and accessed for distance learning if required.
