St. Leonard’s C.E. (VC) First School

ELSAs are Emotional Literacy Support Assistants. They are teaching assistants who have received specific additional training from educational psychologists from whom they receive on going supervision following training. Their role is to support children and young people in school to understand and regulate their own emotions whilst also respecting the feelings of those around them. Mrs Walker has recently trained as an ELSA. The pupils love spending time with her as they are able to share their thoughts and feelings, in a safe and supportive way. The ELSA Network supports and assists ELSAs in their valuable work, as well as helping area co-ordinators to publicise ELSA work in their locality. Many local authorities across England and Wales now have ELSAs in their schools. Please look for news of ‘St Leonard’s First School’ as we are featured in some local newspapers for our

work in this very specialist area of education.

Pyjamarama Day. We raised monies for Book Trust and had a thoroughly, fabulous day! Special thanks to our school cook, Diane. She cooked a full English breakfast for our visiting Dads, Uncles and friends to celebrate Father’s Day. The smell of bacon wafted through the corridors, while our pupils welcomed their loved ones. Thank you to everyone who supported this event. On Sunday 14th July 1pm – 5pm we will be holding St Leonard’s Summer Festival. There will be a live band, barbecue, face painting, games, snowy cones and much more. Keep the date free – all welcome to this community event.

Another important part of our St Leonard’s team is Minnie our ‘Sensory Assistance Dog’. Minnie has been with us since the beginning of the year and has had a very positive impact on the children by encouraging them to read to her, as well as helping the children to stay calm, relaxed and focussed. Minnie and the children love playtime together when they both get the opportunity to run around!

If you would like to visit the school please call the office who can make an appointment to look around. You can also visit our website for further information:

We also continue to raise money for many charities. Last week we held a

Cannock and District Soroptimists I RO N MA N J UN E 2019

Once again Cannock Soroptimists volunteered, both as bag packers and as race marshals, at the annual Staffordshire Ironman 70.3 race. Two days before the event, June Bould, Trish Mellor and Jackie Prince spent a day bag packing; they worked hard to ensure that all 2,500 competitors and those who marshal on the day of the event had everything they needed. They learned a lot about the hard work and complex planning that goes on behind the scenes to prepare for an international event of this scale. Early on Sunday 9th June, 4 other members of Cannock Soroptimists: Val Jones, Jill Gooch, Dawn Pope and Olivia Lyons were in position near to Chasewater to marshal the first part of the bike ride section of the race. Competitors had already completed the 1.2 mile swim when they began the 56 mile bike ride on their way to Shugborough where they then ran a half marathon! A lovely sunny morning ensured the race started on time. Soroptimist marshals were in awe of Lucy Charles-Barclay who swam the 1.2 mile in 15 degree water temperature with fastest overall swim. She continued her lead in the cycle section matching the speed of the promen; and was the fastest women’s runner, becoming

14

overall women’s winner. All of the marshals thought it was a great experience being part of such an event, directing the riders and cheering them on. The competitors were so appreciative of the job all of the volunteer marshals do, shouting out their thanks and often sharing a joke about the day and the weather. Ironman donates monies to charities in lieu of the help given by volunteers. Donations to the club this year will help towards SI Cannock’s President Trish Smith’s charity this year which is Staffordshire Women’s Aid. The next club meeting at the Barns, Huntington, will be at 7.00pm on Tuesday June 18th when the speaker will be a representative of the charity Mary’s Meals. Anyone wishing to come along can contact https:// sigbi.org/cannock-and-district/ email june.bould@ gmail.com or phone 01543 876209 More information on the work of the Cannock Club can be found on the website above and on www. facebook.com/SICannock; or the twitter account @sicannock www.thestafforddirectory.co.uk | 01785 318704

People Power Fund making a difference in Staffordshire

Hundreds of young people across Staffordshire and Stokeon-Trent are feeling the benefit thanks to the Staffordshire Commissioner’s Office funding of dozens of schemes. The People Power Fund invites community groups to bid for up to £3,000 of funding to run all manner of different schemes from providing positive activities for young people to programmes targeted at specific groups such as elderly or homeless people. The latest awards will be announced soon and Staffordshire Commissioner Matthew Ellis recently visited two beneficiaries of previous funding rounds - Wombourne Youth Boxing Club and the Splat young people’s initiative in Moss Green, Stoke-on-Trent - to see youth work in action. Matthew Ellis said: “I was delighted to have the opportunity to see first-hand the good work being done as a direct result of the People Power Fund scheme.

Plan

Design

“It is by making relatively small investments in schemes such as these at community level that we hope to make a real difference further down the line, particularly for young people who benefit from the structure and focused approach of regular sessions. “At Wombourne Youth Boxing Club it was fantastic to see officers from Staffordshire Police giving their time for a great cause and the hard-working volunteers at Moss Green were equally inspiring.” Awards from the most recent round of applications to the People Power Fund will be announced in the coming weeks. The next round of applications open in August. Visit www.staffordshire-pfcc.gov.uk/people-power-fund for more information.

National Trust Staffordshire Centre

Our latest event: Tour of Hadrian’s Arch Shugborough on 9th May 2019

The group was greeted by Rachael (Senior Surveyor NT) and Tim (Consultant Architect), and guided to the monument. When they reached the base, an explanation of the work that was taking place and the reasoning behind those actions was given. It was explained that this activity is not a restoration, repair nor a clean but a careful inspection of the state of the arch and the remedial actions required to stabilise the monument. When questions had been answered the group was split into two for the ‘ascent’ of the scaffolding, some 54 steps in total. A detailed explanation was given for the different areas of the arch and how each specific area was being inspected and protected. It was made clear why the monument was not being cleaned as that would result in more damage to the structure. Tim also explained the timescales involved in previous operations, these being stone repairs during the 1950s, and a further inspection and remedial work in the 1990s. It is hoped the work being completed this time should

guarantee the structure for a further twenty to thirty years. This means this was a unique opportunity for the members to get close to the Arch. There will be more events in future exclusively for and free to members of the Centre. If you want to find out what the Centre has to offer and how you could get even more out of your National Trust membership contact our membership secretary jjobling@uwclub.net. Alternatively, pick up a leaflet from the second bookshop at Shugborough, which is

sponsored by the Centre.

Enjoy a Visit to Melbourne Hall & Gardens

from right across the British gardening community. Her eye for colour and detail means that the Melbourne garden is a haven of delightful and unusual specimen trees, shrubs and herbaceous borders. Melbourne Hall itself has a well-documented history and has been the home to two Prime Ministers, Lord Melbourne (Queen Victoria’s friend and confidant) and Lord Palmerston.

Melbourne Hall Gardens with its broad sweeps of lawn, avenues and unexpected vistas is one of the best known formal gardens in the country and is the best surviving early 18th century English garden in the manner of le Notre. It was laid out by Rt. Hon Thomas Coke, Vice Chamberlain to Queen Anne, with help from the garden landscape designers George London and Henry Wise in the formal style. It is noted for its long tunnel of Yew, its wrought iron pagoda created by Robert Bakewell and its statuary by Jan van Nost, notably the Four seasons monument, a gift from Queen Anne. Lord Ralph Kerr took over running the Melbourne estate in 1987. His wife Lady Ralph Kerr is a painter of both portraits and landscapes. Since taking on the garden she has embarked on an extensive programme of restoration and planting within the original layout, and garnered praise

As William Lamb, Lord Melbourne’s wife the celebrated Lady Caroline Lamb spent time at the hall, Melbourne Hall remains a lived-in family home, accounting for its warm and welcoming atmosphere. Melbourne Hall is open to the public during the month of August, every afternoon from 2pm until 5pm except for the first three Mondays. Melbourne Hall Gardens are open from Apr-Sept on Weds, Sat, Sun and Bank Holiday Mondays from 1.30-5.30pm and every afternoon in August when the Hall is open. Summer Fruits P I E SUMMER FRUIT PIE Celebrate British summer fruits by treating yourself to this delicious Summer Fruit pie. A classic recipe for you and your family to enjoy. S E RVE S 7 | R E A DY IN 1 HOUR

INGREDIENTS 350g plain flour 250g butter 140g icing sugar 100g ground almonds 1 large egg 750g mixed summer fruits (cherries, blueberries, blackcurrants, redcurrant and blackberries) 2 tbsp cornflour 2 tsp granulated sugar METHOD Heat your oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 5. Use a food processor to mix together the flour, butter and icing sugar together. Separate the egg yolk and mix with 1tbsp cold water before adding to the mix and using the food processor until the dough forms. Wrap the pastry in cling film and chill in the fridge for 20-40 minutes. Line a pie dish with half of your pastry, add baking beans and bake for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, mix the berries, cornflour and 2 tbsp icing sugar. When your pie base comes out of the oven, remove the beans and then pour your berry mixture on top. Roll out your remaining pastry and slice in to thin strips. Layer the strips in a lattice pattern on top of your pie. Whisk your egg white and use a pastry brush to brush a little around the rim of the pie, as well as the top of your lattice. Sprinkle with granulated sugar and bake for 30 minutes until golden. Enjoy with ice cream, cream or custard!

Church Eaton Primary School MAI N TAINS O F ST ED ‘GO O D’ R ATIN G

Everyone at Church Eaton Primary school is delighted to announce that the school has achieved a GOOD rating again from OFSTED, resulting from the recent inspection, which took place on 2nd May 2019. This beautiful rural school, located within a 15 minute drive of Stafford Castle, which has been recognised by OFSTED as being ‘one big family’ where ‘the warm and welcoming atmosphere, based on the school’s motto of ‘Caring, Educating, Succeeding’ permeates throughout the school.’ OFSTED also recognised that as a result of the school’s motto that ‘the pupils are well behaved, courteous and kind’. Mr Shaw, the Headteacher, is proud of the report as it recognises the relentless drive and determination of the pupils, parents, staff, governors and Foundation, who work incredibly hard every day to ensure that the school continues to improve and thrive. The school has grown from strength to strength in recent years and has expanded to a four class structure, with the appointment of an additional class teacher. In addition, the school is thrilled to announce that they will be joining the Staffordshire University Academies Trust (SUAT) from 1st September 2019. This will help forge links with the University, hopefully inspiring all children to aspire to go into Higher Education, strengthening the leadership capacity, further raising standards of progress for all pupils and help the school achieve the ambition of becoming an OUTSTANDING school.

32

Church Eaton Primary School is passionate about delivering an enriched, broad and balanced curriculum. ‘Children describe their learning with enthusiasm, including a number of visits which have captured their interest’, they ‘demonstrate a love of reading’ supported by the Reading Army formed of local community and parent volunteers and ‘experience woodland outdoor education provision as part of the school’s rich curriculum’. Most importantly OFSTED recognises that ‘there is a strong emphasis on ensuring pupils show positive attitudes to learning and they are considerate to each other. They say they feel safe and are confident that staff will sort out problems they have’. ‘In lessons, pupils demonstrate excellent learning behaviour by staying on task at all time. They carefully follow the advice given by their teachers on how to improve their work’. Church Eaton Primary School is an all-inclusive school. OFSTED stated in their letter to the school that ‘pupils of all abilities achieve well, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND)’. If you are currently looking for a school environment which puts your child first, offers excellence in education and prepares your child well for the future, then please arrange a visit by contacting our office manager on 01785 823089. There are limited places left within each year group from Nursery to Year 6. The school offers wraparound care for all pupils from Nursery through to Year 6.
