Not only are they trained in the required fields for their profession, but also in compassion, personalisation and rapport building to ensure service users are made to feel comfortable, secure and confident in their carers ability. If we feel the care required falls outside of our capabilities, we will endeavour to obtain the relevant training in order to meet their required specific needs. Some instances were quite undignified, but with more adequate training and moreover, care, could have turned what was a degrading scenario into a dignified, caring and personalised experience. In the later months, the immense support the family received from Macmillan Cancer Support was second to none, along with Katherine House in Stafford. We will forever remain thankful for their kind and supportive care in what was an emotional and exasperating time.

“Ordiary people doing amazing things” S TA F F O R D L I O N S C L U B

Stafford Lions Club formed in 1977 and has performed many selfless tasks since then in order to fulfil the pledge “Ordinary people doing amazing things”. There is one activity for which Stafford Lions (CIO) UK are particularly proud. In the 1980’s members of the club began a weekly visit to local supermarkets to collect tinned food donated by customers. The sorting of the food took place in a member’s garage but soon the amount became too much to be sorted there and the group moved their activity into the foyer of a

local hospital. One of the doctors, who was a member of the club suggested hiring a church hall, and as the saying goes ‘the rest is history’. Thirty years on the club is still collecting and distributing a variety of food donations. On two designated Sunday mornings, one in January and one in June, cars displaying Lions banners can be seen picking up parcels of food that have been left out at the ends of driveways. Each year Stafford Lions are overwhelmed by the ever increasing generosity of the people of Baswich and more recently Wildwood.

Soroptimist International of Stafford, a service organization for women, formed in 1939 is celebrating 80 years of action to support women and girls Locally, Nationally and Internationally. To mark this special occasion Stafford Club members, with their president Judith Carder, met in Stafford’s Victoria Park for the planting and dedication of an Oak Tree. The Oak is the National Tree of England and a symbol of strength and endurance. For this reason any 80th celebration is known as an Oak Anniversary. It is hoped that the tree, a small gift towards the planned restoration and enhancement of Victoria Park, will be a lasting reminder of the work undertaken by Stafford Soroptimiosts.

Soroptimist International of Stafford continue to enhance and change the lives of women and girls worldwide with opportunities to Educate, Empower and Enable them towards a better future for themselves and their families. The world was a very different place in 1939 but the values and aims of Soroptimism remain just as relevant today as they did 80 years ago.

This year has been a very busy time for the Stafford Club and significant help and support has been given by Councillor Jeremy Pert, who attended the Tree Planting Ceremony.

Take 5 sprigs of rosemary, the lemons (halved) and garlic bulbs (halved) and add to a baking dish with 1cm of water. Roast in the oven for 15 minutes before reducing the temparture to 190Â°C/Gas mark 6 and covering with foil. Continue to roast for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Once cooked, removed the lamb from the oven and rest for 15 minutes. Enjoy alongside mint sauce, roast potatoes and all the trimmings!

M O N T H LY A L Z H E I M E R ’ S S U P P O RT E V E N I N G CELEBRATE THEIR 10TH ANNIVERSARY It only seems like yesterday the first MASE Group opened in April 2009 at Haughton Village Hall. From that day to this we have worked hard to be a professional, well-respected organisation and have earned a good reputation for the work we do. Over 10 years we have had to overcome many obstacles and have suffered quite a few setbacks. Core funding was never offered to our organisation, which meant that we needed to constantly fundraise to ensure we had sufficient funds to keep the groups running. In these days of austerity that has been challenging, but through sheer hard work and determination we succeeded. However our lives have been enriched by many wonderful people we have met along the way. Social Isolation is getting more and more prevalent and for a Carer who has looked after their loved-one for many years, to suddenly find themselves alone can be traumatic. This is why the MASE is different, we do not turn away Carers who have lost loved ones, we welcome them with open arms;

who better to help new Carers at the start of their journey – their tips and the tricks can be passed on to other Carers and can be so valuable. The five MASE group numbers continue to increase each month. Over ten years we have raised an incredible £458,000 – no core funding, no paid personnel, but all done with a determination to succeed. The MASE Trustees (who are also all volunteers) are eternally grateful to their 40 volunteers, many of whom have been with us from day one. We have been truly Blessed with the calibre of every one of our volunteers and thank them for the time and effort they continue to give so graciously to each Group.

Retired, but not Retiring? Expanding hobbies or starting new interests is something we often want to do when we have more time to pursue them.

The U3A is for the retired and semi retired. There are now over 1000 groups across the country. Stafford U3A chairman Tony Pearce says “Meeting new friends, learning new skills ,exercise and enjoyment are all to be found in Stafford U3A.” Many people want to take up new activities. We have something to engage everyone from the Astronomy group, Birdwatching, Cycling, to Ukulele and Woodcarving Groups, via Quizzing and Quilting. Singing and dancing are both good for us . We have a Fun Singing Group, one for Scottish Country Dancing, with Thai Chi providing a calm way of exercising. Bridge, Canasta and Scrabble groups provide quieter moments not to mention Mah Jong. Our coach outings planned for the better weather months start at Leons Coach’s and pick up in Weston and Rising Brook, the first one in May is to the National Trust‘s Hardwick Hall.

Norma Jackson looks after both the Garden Group and Theatre trips . Plans are ready for both groups to have their outings by coach and car sharing this summer. The Garden Group meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 10 am for talks and discussions. On the 20th of March Jenny and Norma will give a talk about Gardens In Art whilst in April a panel of members will take questions in a gardeners question time. During the summer months , visits to gardens are arranged,some not far from Stafford and others further afield by coach. Trips to matinees in theatres around the Midlands are arranged for the Theatre Group, with members using public transport or their own transport . Already this year the group has enjoyed a Viennese Gala and Annie at the Wolverhampton Grand, to be followed in March by a trip to Lichfield Garrick for “Crimes on the Nile.” As Tony says, “We are all volunteers and costs are kept to a minimum. Staffordshire’s Premier Ladies’ Choir C E L E B R AT E A T R I P L E W I N

Chanteuse Chamber Choir are celebrating after winning not one, not two, but three categories at the Mid-Somerset Festival in Bath at the weekend. It was the first time that the choir had taken part in the festival, which has been running continuously since 1902. The standard was high, and the venue was filled with hundreds of choir members supporting each other. Celebrating their first win, The Phyllis Cambridge Memorial Cup, in the Vocal Ensemble, the ladies followed this by winning the Mallory Challenge Trophy in the Sacred Music category. The greatest accolade of the day was receiving the Ethel Denny Salver, with their third win and a distinction in the Folk Song category. Musical Director Sue Brereton-Banks said “What a day! Many congratulations to my choir, all the hard work has paid off. Huge thanks to my fabulous accompanist, Leslie Smith”.
