Stafford Beer and Cider Festival 27th - 29th of July 2017 Just two months until the 10th Stafford Beer and Cider Festival opens! This years festival is due to take place from Thursday 27th July - Saturday 29th July 2017.

Thankfully I have an excellent team of volunteers working with me to make this festival happen. This is my first time in terms of the role of Festival Organiser and I have a hard act to follow but I am determined to make this the most successful festival yet! The committee want to make our 10th anniversary special and one to remember, therefore we decided to come up with a theme for this years festival which you will see used on all of our publicity material and glasses this year. A bright spark, (we do have a few!) came up with the pirate theme, ‘X’ marks the spot (‘X’ being ten in roman numerals).

We want to attract even more families along to the family friendly sessions on the Friday and Saturday afternoons. There will be face painters, bouncy castle, a brass band and we are looking for children and adults to dress up in pirate fancy dress for those sessions (a fancy dress competition is something we are considering). We will be dressing the bars and calling them ‘Starboard’ and ‘Port’ this year as well as bringing in pirate named beers from some of the local and national breweries.

We have two chosen charities to support this year, the Stafford and Rugeley branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and Stafford’s own House of Bread.

Local Artist Creates Cannock Chase in Stitch The popular destination of Cannock Chase is home to a huge variety of wildlife and local textile artist Jo Hill has been commissioned to create a brand new range of work to celebrate this. The artwork

will be on display at the Museum of Cannock Chase and visitors will be able to view the exhibition this summer. The exhibition entitled ‘The Chase in

Stitch’ features a range of contemporary interior textile designs inspired by the wildlife found on

the Chase and will be on display until Sunday 13th August.

Visitors will be able to view and buy a specially selected range of Jo’s work that includes stitched depictions of birds, deer and the landscape of Cannock Chase amongst many other new designs.

Jo is a textile artist and designer based just outside of Stone. She creates luxury textile wall hangings cushionslampshades and chairs inspired by British wildlife and her work can be found in galleries across the UK. Jo, who has always lived and worked in Staffordshire says: “Living in this lovely county is a constant source of inspiration for me, from the huge variety of birds that visit my garden to the fallow deer on Cannock Chase. I love to interpret their colours and textures in a range of glorious fabrics coupled with fine, detailed stitching in my unique style.”

Jo uses appliqué and free-motion embroidery in her work using the sewing machine to ‘draw’ the details of the wildlife on with thread to bring the piece to life.

Jo has spent several years developing her unique style of design and this also involves hand-dyeing many of her fabrics to achieve the perfect colour to match the countryside that she depicts.

Cannock Chase has always provoked strong memories for Jo. She has visited regularly from the age of 5 when she would walk with her family on the Chase every Sunday:

“I remember we used to walk my dog Henry on the Chase every week and I have loved the location ever since, in particular the Seven Springs which is just a really beautiful place.”

Originally trained as a weaverJo spent many years running a business making bespoke curtains and blinds before turning her attention to creating more pictorial works of art. Each item takes several hours - sometimes days! - to complete but Jo says that it is time well spent: “The end result is so worth it. I really focus on attention to detail in creating these pieces and make sure to select the perfect fabric to do justice to the particular animal or bird that I’m interpreting.”

Everything on display in the exhibition will be available to buy or commission: designs are available as complete collections which include lampshades, cushions and wall hangings. The museum is located at Valley RoadHednesfordStaffordshire and is open every day 11am – 5pm.

Recipe of the month Garlic Roasted Peppers These colourful roasted peppers are full of Mediterranean fl avours. They make a great simple starter for a dinner party or served as part of a summer buffet. To serve chilled, allow the peppers to cool completely then cover and leave in the fridge for a couple of hours. Ready in 45 minutes. Serves 4.

4 large red peppers 3 garlic cloves, peeled and

3. Drizzle over half the oil and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Roast for 25-30 mins until the peppers are just tender and lightly charred in places. Leave to cool for 10 mins.
