Poppies Everywhere

AT C H U R C H E AT O N P R I M A R Y S C H O O L

It has been a poignant yet beautiful time at Church Eaton Primary School recently, with the pupils learning about Remembrance & Armistice Day. Class 2 and 3 went on a school trip to the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, where they spent the day paying their respects visiting the various memorials. In school, Class 2 learnt about World War 1 and the poppies. Also they have created art inspired by the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ and wrote poems. Class 3 learnt about the importance of the poppies and what cenotaphs represent. In addition, the children read and discussed war poetry. The younger children of Class 1 joined with the Mother and Toddler group, which takes place every Wednesday morning at the school, to make poppy wreathes together.

‘Heal The World’ by Michael Jackson. There were also prayers from all classes, with all children proudly wearing their poppies. Church Eaton Primary School is classed as ‘GOOD’ by OFSTED. Nursery places are available at this nurturing, rural school where pupils thrive in a caring environment with strong family values and small class sizes. The school offers the option of wrap-around care for Nursery pupils. There is also a before and after school club onsite which is invaluable for working parents.

During this period, the children were invited to take in photographs of relatives, such as GreatGrandparents, who had fought in the war, so the children could reflect together on the sacrifices made so that later generations could live in freedom. On Monday 12th November at 2pm, the school and community came together for a special Remembrance Service at St Editha’s Church, where they were greeted with a sea of poppies outside the church - made by the children. The endearing service included poetry, patriotic wartime songs whilst waving Union Jack flags and the children also sang modern songs, such as 6

Tuition for Christmas Maybe not, but the New Year with its new beginnings and new school term is the time to do something positive for child’s learning needs. Start them off in 2019 with the help they deserve to really get to grips with maths and English. First Class Learning offers affordable, personalised tuition which is focused on building, maintaining and enhancing the confidence of your child by starting at their level, working at their pace and ensuring they get successful results from the start. We take children from Reception all the way up to GCSE. After a brief free assessment, your child will come to either our Friday afternoon or Saturday morning session where they will be introduced to a small manageable concept. Through the week

they are expected to complete small amounts of daily homework which rarely takes more than 15 minutes. At the end of the week, the initial concept will have been mastered and the cycle repeats. We check that the learning has been effective and move on to the next concept. The sessions are fun, vibrant environments with a wide range of ages and abilities – no child will be working on the same thing as each child will have different requirements. To get more information, click on the website www.firstclasslearning.co.uk/centre/staffordnorth find me on Facebook @fclstafford or email stafford@firstclasslearning .co.uk or simply call Adrian on 07958 630478 for a relaxed discussion about your child’s learning needs and our approach to unlocking children’s potential.

Maths and English tuition Get ahead, stay ahead

We establish foundations in Maths and English aligned to the National Curriculum. Each programme is personalised for every child regardless of their ability. Our centres are relaxed environments, where students have the time needed to study effectively, enabling them to build confidence and reach their potential. Answering a Call for Help When Stafford Lions received a request from Spinal Muscular Atrophy Support UK requesting financial help for a local young man, the club was only too happy to help. Seventeen year old Andy Speke a sixth form pupil at Wolgarston High School Penkridge is totally dependent upon his powered wheelchair for all mobility but desperately needs a powered centre leg rest. This will allow him to independently adjust his leg position throughout the day for both comfort and pressure relief. The cost of a leg rest is £3104.56. Chris and Dave Lewis, both members of Stafford Lions Club visited Andy, who is hoping to go to University to study Sports Sciences and Media with a view to becoming either a football coach or work in sport media. They were welcomed into his ‘man cave’ where they presented him with a cheque from Stafford Lions which will help towards the cost of his leg rest. If YOU feel that you could further help Andy with his fund-raising please contact Stafford Lions Club or claire.holdcroft@smasupport.org.uk Would you like to join us? You would be made very welcome! Derrington Art Exhibition A G R E AT S U C C E S S !

The Rosemary Hale Art Groups held their annual exhibition last weekend at Derrington Village Hall, a venue they have used for many years. The spacious village hall was filled with artwork created by the four groups which meet weekly, painting with guidance and structured tuition from professional artist Rosemary Hale. It was a very successful event with good numbers of visitors who enjoyed free art demonstrations as well as the exhibition itself. Visitors were asked to vote for their favourite painting and joint winners were Wendy Baskerville and Jaquie Lees. Jaquie

Stafford Camera Club

DECEMBER & JANUARY EVENTS On 11th December the club welcomes Sarah Howard, her presentation ‘Image Seen - Landscape Photography, Thoughts and Techniques’ Sarah’s interest in photography was initiated by her father, himself an accomplished amateur photographer, and developed further through time spent traveling overseas. Inspired, and subsequently mentored, by the renowned UK landscape photographer Charlie Waite. In 2010, she set up ‘Image Seen’ which offers a variety of landscape photography workshops throughout the UK and Europe, as well as tailored one to one tuition. She absolutely loves the workshops she does as not only do they give her great satisfaction, they also enable her to share some of the beautiful places she has been to. “As a creative tool the camera has allowed me to express my love of the landscape. I am a great believer of getting it right in camera rather than relying on too much manipulation in post production.” The 2019 programme starts with Paddy Ruske on 22 January his ‘Back Lighting’ with workshop looks to me an exciting night, members are invited to b ring their cameras along. Paddy had his first camera at age 12 and have worked through dark room to digital. His main interest is in insect photography followed by landscape and he says that he learnt about low light photography when he served with the Police. He has had numerous national and international success and had a Highly commended in the British Wildlife Photographic Awards. He has now developed an interest in creative photography using the camera rather than photoshop to make the image. Stafford Camera Club meet at 8 pm on Tuesday evenings at the County Staff Club, 77 Eastgate Street, Stafford. From 8th January they are moving to the Constitutional Club, 5 Lloyd St, Stafford ST16 3AS. Newcomers and people of all skill levels are welcome to attend. See www.staffordcameraclub.co.uk

R EADY IN 4HR S 3 0

Heat half the butter and the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the leek and shallots for 6-7 minutes until softened. Remove from the heat and stir in the apricots, breadcrumbs, chestnuts and half the thyme leaves. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas Mark 5. Line a large roasting tin with buttered foil. Use about one third of the stuffing mix to stuff the neck end of the turkey (press the rest of the stuffing in a shallow ovenproof dish to cook separately). Weigh the stuffed turkey and calculate the cooking time - allow 20 minutes per 450g plus 20 minutes. Place the turkey in the lined roasting tin and smear all over the skin with the remaining butter. Sprinkle over the rest of the thyme leaves and season. Cover the turkey with a tent of buttered foil and roast in the preheated oven for the calculated cooking time, basting occasionally. Uncover the turkey for the last 45 minutes until the skin is golden and the juices run clear when a skewer is inserted into the thickest part of one thigh. If the juices run slightly pink, return the turkey to the oven for further 15-20 minutes then check again. Leave the turkey, loosely covered with foil, in a warm place to rest for at least 20 minutes. Stretch the bacon rashers with the back of a knife and cut each rasher in half. Wrap the short rashers around the cocktail sausages, securing with a cocktail stick. Place in baking tray and cook in the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden and cooked through. Drizzle a couple of spoonfuls of juices from the turkey over the stuffing in the dish and cook in the oven at the same time as the baconwrapped sausages for 20 minutes. Serve the turkey on a large warmed platter with the bacon-wrapped sausages and garnish with fresh herbs. Serve the extra stuffing separately along with all the usual festive vegetables.

Give Care not Cards this Christmas W I T H K AT H A R I N E H O U S E H O S P I C E

Katharine House Hospice has launched its Christmas “Give Care Not Cards” appeal to businesses and the local community. The appeal enables employees and community groups to leave Christmas greetings on a festive poster and make a small donation rather than sending individual Christmas cards. The poster saves on the cost and wastage of Christmas cards for colleagues, family and friends – whilst helping to provide free care for local people. The appeal is once again very kindly sponsored by Pickering and Butters Solicitors who have supported this appeal for 8 years. Their generous sponsorship helps to cover the costs ensuring as much money as possible raised goes directly to patients care. Corporate Fundraiser Holly Addison said; “As much as we all love to receive Christmas greetings from our friends and colleagues at work, we can often run out of space on our desk and the cards we receive more often than not end up getting thrown away after the festivities are over. We are asking people to save time, waste and wrist ache to help us to provide care for our patients and their families over the Christmas period.

A card is just for Christmas but the benefits from supporting people in your community will continue long after the seasonal celebrations have come to an end! We are delighted to continue to partner with Pickering and Butters as their support enable us to maximise the money raised” James Wallbank, partner at Pickering & Butters said, “We are very pleased to be able to continue to support the Hospice in sponsoring the Give Care Not Cards campaign. The Hospice plays such an important role in the local community and offers invaluable support to local families. We hope that through the campaign the Hospice can continue to raise vital funds to continue its hard work.” You can order the free festive poster by calling the fundraising team on 01785 270808. Katharine House Hospice provides free care and support for adults and their families across MidStaffordshire coping with a progressive illness. It relies upon the generosity of the local community to help generate 2/3rds of funds needed to run its range of vital services.

After all, there is no greater gift than helping a vital charity like Katharine House Hospice.
