for their families. The Hospice began as a “Hospice at Home” service in 1989 and now provides a range of

Little Shop of Horrors at Lichfield Garrick Theatre Starring Rhydian as The Dentist A CHARMING, KOOKY and HILARIOUS MUSICAL CULT CLASSIC Seymour Krelborn, the assistant at Mushnik’s Flower Shop in downtrodden Skid Row, becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers a strange and exotic plant. He names it Audrey Two in order to impress glamorous Audrey, the colleague he’s secretly in love with. Audrey Two quickly starts to wilt, putting Seymour’s job and dream future with Audrey at risk. Accidentally pricking his finger, Seymour discovers Audrey Two needs a little more than plant food to thrive. Low Prices and High Standards at Optician Factory Outlet

If you’re due for a new pair of glasses you’d do well to look into Direct Specs before committing to buy. Established in Stafford for almost 20 years, this Midlands-based firm is pretty much unique in the optical world. Because they don’t test eyes, and therefore don’t have opticians to pay and consulting rooms to equip, their prices are way below those of other High Street opticians. They also have a larger range of frames to choose from than most of their competitors, including designer models at prices you can’t even find on the Internet. If you need specs for both distance and reading the savings can be bigger still. A quick survey in town will show that varifocal glasses typically cost £120 or more but you can often buy exactly same pair at Direct Specs for around £75 and get a free single vision pair to boot! Designer frames is another area where Direct Specs puts its competitors to the test. For example, they’ve just taken delivery of a huge consignment of Ted Baker, Christian Lacroix and Anna Sui models, all at

20

knock-down prices and once again with a free pair up to the same value. Managing Director Paul Robinson says “Customers are fed up with being ripped off when buying glasses. You only have to look at on-line prices to see how the High Street optical chains are charging way too much for frames and lenses. I’m confident that we offer the best value for money, after all, where else can you buy a complete pair of glasses for £29.99 and get another pair free? Or find a pair of designer glasses for less than £70 and get a free pair of your choice up to the same value?”. If the choice of frames and low prices weren’t enough, Direct Specs also prides itself on its customer service. “Low prices on their own aren’t sufficient.” says Mr Robinson. “We don’t subscribe to the awful customer ‘conveyor belt’ model that some opticians use, we just make sure that every customer is treated in a friendly way, gets their glasses in a timely manner and is happy with the price they’ve paid.”

Silver Foliage

By Diarmuid Gavin The kids are back at school and there’s nip of autumn in the year. September for many of us signals the beginning of a new term and for gardeners a new season to enjoy. It’s also a good time to review your garden and make plans. Previously we have looked at different styles for the garden – formal, romantic, contemporary, cottage. Another important aspect of garden planning is colour choice so this week let’s look at silver. Generally, silver leaved plants have a much better chance of survival in poor soil conditions and in times of drought. Their surfaces are most often covered in fine hairs that enable them to withstand extreme heat by slowing down moisture loss and the silver deflects the sun’s rays. So they are a very good choice for a dry or gravel garden. Silver foliage shimmers on hot sunny days and brings flashes of light to even the most shady areas. It can set off pastel coloured yellows, pinks, blues and greens and looks fantastic when contrasted with hot red and orange flowers, making them look even more intense. Silver plants can also look different at different times of the day depending on what the light does to them and what plants surround them. You can achieve fantastic effects by inserting combinations of silver foliage within your existing planting using grasses, flowering shrubs and perennials that are shot through with silver. The shimmering accents will help to unify the space as the silver forms a connecting thread throughout. A garden design is much more powerful if the eye is guided around the site and silver highlights will do just that. Create a garden in rich layers using contrasting silver foliage shapes and textures such as the heavy rosette clumps of furry leaves that are characteristic of Verbascum olympicum, lush mounds of Perovskia ‘Blue Spire’ that have fine silver grey stems with the most fantastic violet to blue flower spikes and the finely cut almost white foliage of Santolina chamaecyparissus that adds a beautiful rounded shape to the border. Take care not to overwhelm the space with too much of one thing by adding deep green foliage plants with contrasting shapes and species with large and brightly coloured flowers such as paeonies, hydrangeas and euphorbias. Sparkling Silvers: Astelia chathamica This architectural perennial has long sword-shaped leaves that are covered with a fine silver film; they set

September 2016

the scene beautifully and stand out strongly among other plants. Plant Astelias in large clumps if you have a large garden or use them as focal points to punctuate your space and lead the eye around the garden. Eryngium planum ‘Tetra Petra’ This Eryngium has the most wonderful spiky silver leaves that sparkle in the sun. Even spikier blue flowers are borne on silver stems in mid summer – a fantastic plant for texture and to introduce something a bit different amongst softer perennials. Artemisia ‘Powis Castle’ An elegant, classy foliage plant that has a mass of very fine deeply cut silver leaves that are wonderfully aromatic. Soft sprays of yellow flowers add to the effect, but this is generally grown for foliage. Grow them in large swathes that flow into contrasting foliages and deeply coloured flowers. Stachys byzantina The classic silver woolly ‘bunnies’ ears’ that you just can’t resist rubbing between your fingers. A real favourite for children and a fantastic plant for evergreen clumping foliage that fills the border. It complements deep green foliage plants like anemones, hellebores and agapanthus beautifully, adding depth to planting. Salvia officinalis ‘Purpurascens’ Another dense foliage plant, but these silvery green leaves are flushed with purple when young and are deeply aromatic. Plant this Sage in large clumps closer to the house to allow for easy access when you need a sprig in the cooking. Festuca glauca ‘Elijah Blue’ A superb silvery blue grass that is perfect for the front of the border as it grows to a maximum of 10cm. Wonderful grassy tufts that contrast well with neighbouring plants. Plant with astrantias, penstemons and other grasses for great effects. Lavandula angustifolia The wonderful swaying Lavender that sits beautifully in contemporary garden designs as well as in traditional English country gardens. Shapely, fragrant and useful; its fine silvery green leaves are adorned with deep purple flowers in summer. Lavender looks good next to anything, but is also a fantastic stand alone plant, choose the more compact Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’ if you want a neater Lavender hedge.

National Trust Staffordshire Centre Upcoming Talks Programme ‘The Silk Factory’ and ‘The Moon Field’ - writing from history

Her famous “Bizarre” wares were launched in 1927

Tuesday 20th September

bearing her name up to 1964.

Judith Allnatt will talk about the inspiration behind her latest novels; from the heart breaking experiences of soldiers in the First World War to stories of Luddite frame breaking in1812. ‘The Moon Field’ is her third novel ; ‘The Silk Factory’ her latest. Judith is currently working on her 5th novel and continues to give lectures on Creative Writing in universities and to give talks to small groups such as ours. Margaret Winfield - 01785 822507.

SS Great Britain Tuesday 11th October Ian Caskie travels from Bristol where SS Great Britain is docked and where it is recognized as the city’s number one attraction. Ian was born on Merseyside and this is where he developed his passion for ships. He will give a talk about the building of this amazing ship. It was the second of Brunel’s three ‘Great’ ships using the best of the then cutting edge technologies. It was designed for crossing the Atlan-tic and until 1845 was the largest and fastest ship ever built. She had an iron hull and a screw propeller the latter making her the first ocean going steam ship with a screw propeller to cross the Atlantic. Brian and Hilary Taylor - 01785 242305.

and the factory continued pro-ducing pottery

This pottery is now highly prized with some items fetching thousands of pounds and examples can be seen regularly on television antiques’ programmes. Lesley Thompson - 01889 882363.

Crooked Bawbees Tuesday 13th December The Crooked Bawbees play traditional Northumbrian folk music, and their name has been taken from the name of a traditional Northumbri-an tune. A bawbee was an old silver coin. It is now five years since ‘The Crooked Bawbees’, gave us a very enjoya-ble concert in Walton Village Hall. Folk music is an integral part of the heritage of the British Isles, and Northumbrian folk music is a rich blend of folk music with Celtic origins. The tunes and songs range from lively reels, jigs, and hornpipes, to waltzes, and slow airs and la-ments, of which The Crooked Bawbees play a wide and varied range, in-cluding Some from Ireland and Scotland. These tunes have been de-scribed as lively and foot-tapping music, but also as serene and relax-ing. As with most folk music groups the performances of ‘The Crooked Bawbees’ are informal and audience participation is encouraged. The line-up is on Northumbrian pipes Gordon

Clarice Cliff 1899-1972 Tuesday 15th November This will be an illustrated talk on the life and work of Clarice Cliff renowned for her ground breaking designs of ceramics. She is today regarded as the most prolific and possibly the most important Art

Greenley, on fiddles Frank Farnworth and John Newby and on keyboard Lee Haddock. Linda Kirtley is our vocalist. Margaret Winfield - 01785 822507.

All talks are held at 2.30 pm in Walton Village Hall.

Local teenager completes skydive in aid of Shine Charity Since birth, my Mum, Claire suffered from Spina Bifida - a condition where a fault in the development of the spinal cord and surrounding vertebrae leaves a gap or split in the spine meaning the spinal cord does not form properly and may be damaged. She fought her illness everyday of her life and never let it overcome or define her. Even through the toughest of times, she was one of the funniest, kindest and most selfless people I will ever meet, with a fantastic sense of humour that could brighten up the darkest of rooms. But she struggled against her condition -which led to the amputation of her lower legs at the ages of 11 and 12 - and she was too proud to ask for help, never wishing to be a burden on others, so she only had her family for support. After hearing of Shine and the support they give to people like mum, who also have spina bifida or hydrocephalus (a build-up of fluid on the brain) and knowing how life changing this support could be I was eager to do everything I could to raise money to help ensure that Shine can carry on their valuable work. So this is why I decided to do the scariest thing I could ever imagine myself doing and thus booked a skydive from 15,000 feet, which eventually went ahead on the 1st August after being initially postponed due to bad weather conditions.

planning, the fundraising, the feeling of a 10,000 feet freefall – the best part of all this has been the response of the community who have been all too willing to help out and donate, sponsor and share supporting words or memories of mum and this is what has made everything I have done worthwhile. It has been really humbling to see just how supportive everyone has been and due the kind spirit and generosity of everybody I have raised a final total of £2457.85 to go straight to Shine! So this is just one final thank you to absolutely anyone and everyone who got involved and made all of this possible – I couldn’t have done this without all of you! Thank you so much, Connor Davies

It was honestly the best thing I have ever done and the feeling of accomplishment as I hit the ground was just overwhelming, and knowing I had the support of a huge number of people behind me was even more amazing. Because out of everything – the September 2016
