Tuesday Mixer Club

On hearing of the appeal on social media for food from Staffordshire Women’s Aid, the Over 55s Tuesday Mixer Club jumped in to help and over two weeks collected nearly 200 dry and tinned food to donate to the charity Lorraine Conkey founder of the community group said “When I saw the appeal for food I couldn’t just ignore the plea, most of us have had hard times in the past and may do in the future so to help people in dire need if you can is only right. As the need was great we only collected for two weeks at the meetings so we could get the food to Staffordshire Women’s Aid. They do such a great job locally and unfortunately one of the bigger grants they have relied on in the past has been given elsewhere recently, so they really need the local support to help fund the fantastic job they do. I was very proud that the Tuesday Mixers rallied around and brought in what they 4

could. Karen Salt one of the fundraisers for SWA came and collected all the goods to distribute where needed” The Over 55s Tuesday Mixer Club meets every week at The White Eagle Club Riverway Stafford from 1 pm to 3.30 pm Admission is £1 with free unlimited tea, coffee and biscuits.

There are guest speakers each week as well as quiz, raffle and bingo. Everyone is welcome. What is a Mase Group?

M O N T H LY A L Z H E I M E R ’ S S U P P O R T E V E N I N G S ( M A S E )

People are sitting at tables draped with lovely red and white tablecloths. An array of people in red shirts and blouses move around the room; these are the valuable volunteers who run the groups each month.

Refreshments are being served and there is a lively buzz of conversation and laughter. At each group there is a different entertainer each month - playing both old and new songs, people are dancing and singing and enjoying an evening together.

The service offered by each MASE group continues to benefit Carers and their cared for attending; this is reflected by the rising number of new people each month.

The information, support and friendship the MASE gives to Carers and their cared for attending each month is quite unique - long may it continue!

To someone looking in it has a ‘good party atmosphere’, but the MASE is a Group with a difference, it is one of five MASE Groups around South Staffordshire which provides support and information for people affected by dementia. The MASE brings together people with dementia, their families and Carers, and also has health care professionals in attendance. Many people withdraw from social activities because of dementia and can become socially isolated. At the MASE everyone is aware of the nature of the illness, so people don’t have to worry or feel embarrassed.

The Groups meet once a month in five different venues, Cannock, Haughton, Rugeley, Hednesford and Stafford.

Our newly designed Mase leaflet shows what we call the ‘Tree of Life’. The tree is shaped as a face, and shows leaves blowing away from the branches. This depicts dementia so accurately, as once a leaf falls from the tree it will never return – just as when a memory fades in the 12

their playground and are having fun utilizing it already.

In addition, the grounds at Church Eaton Primary School had a much appreciated boost of T.L.C when a team of 13 helpers from the company ‘AMEY’ came for the day recently. This Community Day was organised with the help of Mr Corcoran. The strapping helpers from AMEY got the paintbrushes out and painted the EYFS fencing and playhouse. This has made the area look fresher and more inviting.

In addition, the pathway around the pond area was re-laid and freshened up dramatically, along with the pathways around the allotment. It was a busy day and a lot was achieved. The school would like to thank Amey for their time and hard work. The children love the revitalised areas.

It’s been an exciting time at Church Eaton Primary School in recent weeks with development and maintenance of the school’s grounds. New fitness/ play equipment (complete with fake palm trees!) has been installed in the main playgroundfunded by a grant from the National Lottery. The children were thrilled with the new addition to

Church Eaton Primary School is classed as ‘GOOD’ by OFSTED. Nursery places are available at this nurturing, rural school where pupils thrive in a caring environment with strong family values.

The school offers the option of wrap-around care for Nursery pupils. There is also a before and after school club on-site which is invaluable for working parents.

A hearty and warming soup made with seasonal root vegetables. Serve with thick slices of warm crusty bread for a filling lunch or super.

I N G R E DIE NT S 2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 1clove garlic, peeled and crushed 2 tsp medium curry paste 300g carrots, peeled and diced 250g swede, peeled and diced 1.4 litre vegetable stock Creme fraiche or natural yoghurt ME T HOD Heat the oil in a large, deep pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and fry for 6-7 minutes until softened. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute, then add the diced vegetables and cover. Cook gently for 5 minutes.

Pour in 900ml of the chicken stock and season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes or until the vegetables are tender. Cool for 10 minutes.

Puree the soup in a blender and return to the pan. Stir in another 300ml of the remaining stock and heat through gently. If you prefer a soup with a thinner consistency add the rest of the stock.

Adjust the seasoning to taste and serve in warmed bowls garnished with a spoonful of creme fraiche or natural yoghurt and crushed coriander seeds.

Events Fundraiser, Lisa Carson, said: “Our Winter Walk is a great pre-Sunday lunch outing for all the family and a wonderful way to make the season about caring for others as well as meeting Santa...all children will be given a goody bag from him and there’s a hot drink for everyone after the walk.”

Until the middle of the 18th century, transport was a difficult and expensive undertaking. Most roads were made of earth and were impassable during the winter and heavy rain. There were some toll roads which were only marginally better.

It was possible to transport goods by water but only on the navigable sections of the major rivers.

Along came James Brindley who had the drive and the technical ability to undertake these vast civil engineering projects of canal construction which would make the industrial revolution possible.

Without his incredible contribution, Britain would not have become such the dominant force that it was during the Victorian era.
