Christmas has come early for Mere Park Garden Centre in Newport! With not long now until the big day, Mere Park Garden Centre (just off the A41) has recently opened their Christmas Barn!

A winter wonderland offering everything you could possibly want and more for the festive period.

The centres festive sales area is now open!

The Christmas Barn showcases a number of enchanting displays, giving you the perfect idea of how to decorate your home this Christmas.

Santa arrive by classic bus at 1pm and the Grotto will be open from 1:30pm-5pm. The Grotto will also be open every weekend leading upto Christmas from 11:15am-5pm on Saturdays and 10:30m-4:15pm on Sundays.

Book now for some Festive Fun with Katharine House Hospice The nights are drawing in, the leaves are falling and soon we will be starting our plans for Christmas.

To give you some early ideas on how to make your Christmas one to remember, Katharine House Hospice’s Ladies Luncheon Committee are hosting an afternoon of Festive Fun at the Moat House in Acton Trussell on Thursday 19th November between 2pm – 5pm.

The event is always extremely popular and over the last few years tickets have sold out very quickly. This year we will be joined by Diana Scott MBE, who will be demonstrating “Decorating your Home” and floristry.

There will be a range of independent traders on the day, giving guests the opportunity to purchase some fabulous seasonal gifts. It’s a great opportunity for guests to buy something a little different than what is available from the high street.

Lisa Carson, Events Fundraiser at the Hospice says:

“This event is always very popular and we are looking forward to an entertaining afternoon as well as raising much needed funds for the hospice. The committee and I would like to thank all our demonstrators for giving their time so freely. We are sure that guests will leave full of festive cheers and we encourage supporters to purchase tickets ASAP before they sell out.”

Penkridge Victorian Christmas Market Friday 27th November Penkridge Victorian Christmas Market is the annual event that everyone looks forward to and truly marks the start of the Festive Season! With over 100 stalls of fabulous food and local crafts, as well as plenty of entertainment, it’s no wonder thousands of people attend every year. This year it will be taking place on Friday 27th November from 5pm to 9pm on the site of Penkridge Market, and admission to the event is free!

Although chiropractors occasionally use soft tissue work, we are specifically concerned with the restoration of appropriate musculoskeletal (joint and muscle) function, particularly in the spine, through spinal manipulation, mobilisation and functional training.

Massage is known to help in areas such as: relieving muscle spasm; increasing blood flow; relaxing surrounding tension;

facilitating healing and removing tissue adhesions. It also helps hugely in preparing and relaxing muscle guarding enough to allow effective spinal manipulation.

Extreme Reading Winner ‘Slip ‘n’ slides’ to Victory Sian Hitchin (12) won an unusual school competition that took place over the summer.

Students at Blessed William Howard Catholic High School were asked to return to school with a photograph of themselves reading in an interesting location for an Extreme Reading competition. The best three entries would be selected in October.

Sian’s winning entry shows her reading her book on a ‘slip n slide’ water slide during a summer camp at Savio House in Bollington. The two runners up were Ben Coope (12) and Poppy Grocott (12). Ben is pictured reading whilst rock climbing and Poppy was enjoying her book whilst on a rowing boat.

Sian was awarded a £10 gift voucher by the English Department. Other location shots submitted by students included leaning against the Tower of Pisa in Italy and reading on a beach in Greece.

This Extreme Reading Challenge was part of the

school’s Drop Everything and Read Campaign, aimed to encourage reading for pleasure.

“Interest in reading tends to drop off once children start secondary school and it is not just their literacy development that this affects; it has a knock on effect on learning across the curriculum.” commented Miss Joanne Hoffin, English Curriculum Progression Leader.

Swim for Jim As a child a close encounter with the deep end of a swimming pool left me with a fear of deep water, consequently learning to swim was not something ever on my agenda….until now!

In 2003, my Dad was diagnosed with incurable lung cancer, he spent some time receiving radiotherapy in the Christie Hospital and received support from Macmillian. Sadly, shortly after my graduation in 2004 Dad lost his battle to cancer. Every year since, I have done something to raise funds for cancer charities, from running a sponsored silence with a class of thirty 12 year olds to completing the race for life with some friends. As last year was the 10th anniversary, I decided to challenge myself. I faced my fears and learned to swim!

Dawn at Hydro Health was recommended to me by a friend, who’s Sons had been taught by Dawn so I contacted her and decided to go for it! Dawn isn’t like your ‘regular’ instructor she uses sensory and psychological teaching methods to really individualise lessons to have maximum impact in a short space of time, and with over 20 years swim instructor experience she certainly does make an impact!

The pool at Hydro Health isn’t your regular pool either, for starters the water is a lovely 34° which instantly makes you feel relaxed in the water.

Secondly, Dawn uses the environmentally friendly Aligator Swimming Pool Water Purification System to keep the water clean rather than chlorine which is certainly kinder to my eyes and doesn’t leave that lingering chlorine smell on your skin! I learned to be more comfortable in the water, and conquered the beginning stages of learning to swim!

I swam my first proper 5 metres on 8th May 2014, and on the 15th May I managed to swim 10 metres!

I began to learn the skills I needed to become a ‘public swimmer’ – turning whilst swimming etc.

I then needed to challenge myself to swim in a larger pool to help me build up stamina to enable me to complete my sponsored swim.

After swimming with Dawn and enjoying her teaching style I decided that my children would also benefit from Dawn’s experience and took both my boys to swim at her pool - my eldest to improve his stroke, and my youngest to join in her ‘water weenies’ lessons. This very quickly became the highlight of his week, and once he was old enough he began one to one instruction with Dawn too.

I would say that becoming a swimmer with Dawn hasn’t been ‘swimming lessons’ it’s been a journey, and one that my whole family have benefitted from.

On a personal level, being able to swim and being more confident in the water is wonderful, but Dawn hasn’t just turned me into a swimmer, she has given me skills that I can pass on to my boys as well. But this isn’t even the best bit! The best bit for me is the confidence Dawn has given me to swim with my children. When we go on holiday I am no longer the Mum who’s afraid to go in the water or the Mum who just sits on the side – now I’m the Mum who will happily jump in, the Mum who races the kids across the pool on inflatables, the Mum who does handstands on the bottom of the pool….oh yes and I’m also the Mum of the 2 and a half year old who isn’t afraid to whizz down the massive water slides – why? Because he journeyed with Dawn too.

Walton gets to grips with the world of politics Following a successful day involved with the UK Youth Parliament vote, Walton pupils were further encouraged to discover the role of politics in their daily lives, as part of their PSHE program.

Whilst year 8 learned about the history of parliament and practised the art of debate, and year 10 delved into the topic of democracy, the year 9 group split into parties entitled Transform, Vision, Progress and Tomorrow and built their own campaigns about issues they had researched and felt strongly about, across areas such as Education, Health and Poverty.

The school PSHE Coordinator, Mr Andy Stokes, commented “initially many youngsters can be put off by the word “politics”, but as they discover what a major role it plays in their lives, they realise its importance and want to get involved. It was very interesting to see pupils present and argue their points so passionately.”

Dreaming about garden styles

Recent years have brought us sensory overload as we have been assaulted by varieties of different garden types and different planting schemes as never before. This has happened through television, garden shows, magazines, books, garden centres and nurseries. We are swamped by choice.

Gardening, garden styles, garden creation and makeover have become trendy, some would say faddish. For your own garden it is something you want to avoid. You want to make an informed decision on what you want, what you love and what is suitable.

So we are talking garden style. What does that mean?

What is a style? Well it’s a practical and visual manifestation of garden types that have evolved in different places around the world for different reasons.

Phew. On the surface it sounds complicated but it’s not really. Close your eyes. Do it now. And name for me in your head as many garden styles as you can think of.

Right. Let’s see how you did.

We have the makeover style - the one that has been popular on television for many years, generally contemporary, clean lines, often architectural planting or maybe grasses, the garden as a room outside, high on fashion.

But what else? There’s the twee suburban style I was brought up with, lawns, cherry trees, bedding plants, and rows of hybrid tea or floribunda roses, rockeries and crazy paving, all surrounded by a hedge. That’s two. Both of these styles have been as a response to how we have lived at various times.

Number three – the very English cottage garden – sentimental and colourful, a chocolate box image of herbaceous flowers, and traditional rustic materials – stone walls, dovecotes, wishing wells, fruit and vegetables, quaint.

Number four – the posh garden. Hedges trimmed within an inch of their lives, Buxus sempervirens (box) as plant number one, deliciously flowing herbaceous borders, colours ranging from hot to cool, then back again, for Gardens Illustrated devotees, Lutyens benches, cast iron statuary, fountains and brick pavilions with terracotta tiled roofs.

Number five – the Italian/ Tuscan gardens of our dreams – tall Cypress tress, lavender, cooling canals of water, focal points, parterres, terraces stepping down sloped sites, views beyond being captured by the garden user, shady grottoes to contrast with blazing sunshine.

Number six – the Japanese garden. A Zen-like soulful escape from the material world! Gravel raked into swirls around rocks masquerading as craggy islands, bamboo, maple, Ophiopogon, Acorus, lanterns to light the way, stepping stones over still pools, pathways which offer the visitor choice, moss and temples, tea ceremonies.

All these garden styles have evolved for reasons, in different places. Their evolution ranges through social or economic conditions, rulers wanting to dominate the landscape and dominate plants, the creation of heaven on earth for meditation or practical responses to keeping areas of vegetation neat and tidy. What garden is it that you like and why? For many it’s memories of growing up, digging vegetables with Granddad or staking up dahlias. It may be that you have your house exactly as you want it from architecture to interior design and the new garden won’t work unless it matches seamlessly. You might be a plantaholic and have a craving to display as many different types of species as possible. You might love the contrast between leaves, the architectural nature of foliage or it could be that you really appreciate flowering arranging and want material.

Whatever it is, try to step beyond what’s new or exciting and even a classic style that’s “in” again. It’s another time to close the eyes, what would your ideal garden be and why? Does it suit you and all the other members of the household, does it seem to fit your spot in your head, can you afford to create it, do you have the time and skill to look after it?

Take some time on this and enjoy your deliberations!

Cadets making a difference for People with Dementia The Staffordshire Police Cadets are teaming up with the Dementia Friends scheme to ensure that people living with dementia get the best possible support.

Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Arnold arranged for the Police Cadets to be given training to become Dementia Friends so they can use their training to help friends and family understand what it’s like for people to live with dementia.

Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Arnold said: “Across the country one in 14 people over 65 are living with dementia so it is fantastic that we were able to offer this training to the police cadets. It is so important that young people understand what it is like to live with dementia, the impact it has on a community and be aware of ways they can help a person who may be suffering.

So far units in Stafford, Cannock and Burslem have all received their training with Tamworth and Longton arranged for coming weeks.

The scheme is part of a larger programme of work to see that those with mental health issues get the right support.

“Mental health is a huge issue across the UK and in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent we are doing something serious about it.”

Dementia Friends encourage others to make a positive difference to people living with dementia in their communities by looking at actions big or small that can help and asking people to take dementia-friendly action.
