Sheds, Outbuildings and Tools Staffordshire Police

Sheds are popular targets for burglars as they are often overlooked when security is being considered. If you store valuables or tools in them, you should secure these as well. Even if there isn’t anything of value in your shed or garage, burglars can use equipment stored in them such as forks, chisels and screwdrivers to break into your home.

Shed Security Some simple tips can help make your shed less vulnerable to an opportunist thief: • Make sure that your shed door, door frame and walls are solid.

• Replace any damaged or rotten areas with new sections.

• Try to place the shed door facing your house and not too close to a perimeter wall or gate.

• Fit two closed shackle padlocks on strong padlock hasps - one a third of the way up from the bottom of the door and one a third of the way down from the top of the door.

• Fit wire mesh or bars on the inside of your window frames.

• Consider integrating your shed into your home alarm system, especially if you have valuable items in it.

Use door contact sensors and check your glass is secure before installing break glass sensors.

• Illuminate the area around your shed using dusk till dawn lighting.

• Consider keeping valuable items in a strong lockable box or cage. Secure the cabinet to the shed using strong bolts or heavy duty screws.

• Wrap a strong chain around and through the handles of garden tools, lawn mowers, cycles etc and secure the chain to the wall using a padlock or a ground anchor fixed to the base of the shed.

• Mark your power tools and advertise that they are marked. Visit www.immobilise.com to register your valuables for free on their database. Items that are recovered by or handed in to police are checked on Immobilise. This helps police reunite property with owners more effectively.

Seasonal Recipe: Home-made Burgers

All You Need To Know!

It’s the barbecue season and nothing tastes better than delicious home-made chargrilled burgers.

Follow these top tips for the best burgers around…

• Always choose good quality premium minced steak for the best flavour but pick one that has some fat in it – don’t buy extra lean mince as the burgers will dry out too much during cooking. Try asking your local butcher to mince some rump or chuck steak with about 20% fat content. For four quarter pounder burgers you’ll need 500g mince.

• Mince is fairly bland so you’ll need to add plenty of flavouring. Grated or very finely chopped onion and minced garlic form the basic flavouring but you add whatever dried or fresh herb, spice or seasoning you like. You’ll need to add 5-10ml (1-2tsp) salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper too.

• A handful of fresh breadcrumbs and a little beaten egg will also help to bind the mince together and prevent the burgers from breaking up during cooking. Whizz all the ingredients in a food processor until the mixture starts holding together or use clean hands to mix as thoroughly as possible.

• Shape the burgers into round flat discs with wetted hands. To get perfectly round shapes press the mixture into a metal pastry cutter.

Don’t over handle the burgers or they will be tough and dry when cooked.

• Ensure that burgers are cooked all the way through and there is no pinkness in the middle.

To check this press the burger down with a fish slice – if there are pink juices oozing out then cook for a few more minutes.

• If you want a change from the classic sesame seed bun why not serve the cooked burgers on top of wedges of toasted ciabatta bread spread with a little mustard mayo or pack into warmed and split pitta breads with salad or coleslaw.

• Try a fresh tomato relish instead of ketchup – just peel and finely dice a couple of ripe plum tomatoes and mix with a little olive oil, fresh chopped basil, a pinch of sugar and salt and freshly ground black pepper.

“I’ve got Sciatica!”

However ‘sciatica’ is not a real diagnosis - it is a term that loosely describes any pain down the leg caused by an injury in the low back and is derived from the name of the largest and longest nerve in that region – the sciatic nerve.

There are also different types of sciatica. True sciatica (also known as neurogenic or radicular pain) is typically caused by an injury to a spinal (intervertebral) disc, and can lead to irritation or damage to the nearby spinal nerves which then form the sciatic nerve. This frequently leads to pain into the leg, often past the knee, and can also be accompanied by pins and needles, sensation changes and muscle weakness. Usually the leg pain is worse than the back pain.

Non-radicular sciatica (or referred pain) is more common and is caused by an injury in the muscles, joints or ligaments of the back which then radiates pain into the buttock and/or leg. This typically stays above the knee and doesn’t cause symptoms such as pins and needles or loss of strength (although severe pain may cause weakness). The back pain is generally worse than the leg pain.

Students hit the mark with Boxing Club A Stafford project has been awarded £6,700 from the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Proceeds of Crime Fund.

The Right Stuff Boxing Academy runs the ‘Safer Schools Box Clever’ project with Schools in the Stafford Borough area, aiming to engage young people in positive activities and reduce anti-social behaviour.

The project has provided the opportunity for the young people involved to learn the basics of boxing and take part in the Amateur Boxing Preliminary Award, receiving a medal and certificate upon completion.

As part of the project, the youngsters are learning about anti-social behaviour, the negative impacts of alcohol, drugs and smoking and railway safety as well as muscular and skeletal system and healthy eating.

The Project is also providing mentorship and positive adult role models for the young people involved, and encouraging them to support their local communities.

Mr Ellis said: ‘I am delighted to hear about the great work that is being carried out by Andy and his team at Right Stuff Boxing. The passion the staff have for helping young people take the right paths in life is incredible and I am pleased to support them with funding.

‘I am determined that 100 per cent of funding that comes back to Staffordshire Police from proceeds of crime seizures is going directly to local communities.’

“All of the schools have been really supportive and specialised teaching staff have p supported young people on the project.

The Proceeds of Crime Fund sees 100% of funding received by Staffordshire Police going back into local communities, through grants of between £3,000 and £15,000. It is made up of money seized from criminals as Staffordshire Police continue to robustly strip offenders of their assets – hitting them where it hurts.

The Fund supports projects in conjunction with local policing teams and local authorities. It is made up of assets and money seized by police from criminals in Staffordshire under the Proceeds of Crime Act. week at the MET studio in Stafford. The concert was part of the Stafford Music Festival. The evening was full of different musical styles,

Chanteuse are an all-ladies chamber choir and was founded in 2008 by Musical Director Susan
