Stafford Choral Society 70th Anniversary Season Monday 5th September sees the start of an exciting 70th season for SCS. As a mixed choir of about 90 members we perform three concerts each season covering a wide range of music. This is very evident in our 70th Anniversary Season, with three concerts each in a different venue, all under the direction of our amazing Conductor David Young, now in his third year with us, ably supported by Pete Durrant, our very talented accompanist.

These concerts begin on 7:30pm on November 19th at Rising Brook Baptist church with a first half consisting of medleys from the music of Jerome Kern, and the musicals Oliver and Oklahoma. The second half sees the choir’s first performance of Mass in Blue by the contemporary British composer Will Todd. His work encompasses choral works large and small, opera, musical theatre, orchestral pieces and jazz compositions. His anthem, The call of Wisdom, was performed at the Queen`s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations. Mass in Blue has been performed all over the world and SCS are looking forward to adding it to their repertoire.

On December 19th we shall give our annual performance of Handel’s Messiah at Colwich Church, again conducted by David Young with soloist and instrumental accompaniment.

The highlight of the 70th Anniversary will be our performance of The Dream of Gerontius by Edward Elgar, in Lichfield Cathedral. This well loved work will consist of an augmented choir with full orchestra and top class soloists.

If you enjoy singing and would like to be part of this special season why not come along and see if it is for you. Rehearsals begin on Monday 5th September, 7.15pm at Rising Brook Methodist Church, Stafford. No audition is required.

The Katharine House Splatter Dash returns for a third year, and in 2016, the hospice would love you to be part of it! This year, Katharine House Hospice would like you to help the Splatter Dash event to reach a grand total of £50,000 which will continue to change lives in our community.

The Katharine House Splatter Dash is Stafford’s original and messiest powdered paint event, where you start in your brightest whites and run, walk, skip, dance or crawl your way around the Splatter Dash route, getting covered in wonderful colours of powdered paint as you pass through the many splatter stations!

Katharine House Hospice provides free care for local people living with a progressive illness and support for their families. The Hospice began as a “Hospice at Home” service in 1989 and now provides a range of free services at the Hospice and in the community.

Each year it costs the Hospice £2.7m to provide care and this is largely due to the kindness and generosity of local people and business who help to provide 75% of the funds required.

250g packet medium rice noodles 2 tbsp sesame oil 1 red pepper, deseeded 1 yellow pepper, deseeded 6 spring onions, trimmed ½ red chilli pepper, deseeded 1 stalk lemon grass 2cm (1in) piece root ginger, peeled 300g (10oz) raw king prawns 4 tbsp lime juice 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp sugar 2 tbsp fresh chopped coriander stalks Fresh coriander leaves, to garnish 20

1. Cook the rice noodles according to the packet instructions. Drain well and rinse under cold running water. Add a few drops of the sesame oil to the noodles and toss them gently to coat in the oil. Set aside.

2. Thinly slice the red and yellow peppers and the spring onions. Finely chop the chilli and lemon grass and grate the root ginger. Heat 2 tsp of the sesame seed oil in a large frying pan.

3. Add the prawns and half the chilli, lemon grass and ginger to the pan and stir-fry for 2-3 mins until prawns start to turn pink. Add the peppers and spring onions a and continue stir-frying over a high heat for a further 1-2 mins until the prawns are completely pink and cooked through.

4. Add the rice noodles to the pan and toss well to mix. Whisk the remaining chilli, lemon grass, ginger and oil with the lime juice, soy sauce, sugar and coriander stalks. Pour over the noodles and heat through for a further 1-2 mins.

5. Season the noodles to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve piled into warmed bowls garnished with coriander leaves.

M&S set to open new store at Stafford Riverside Shopping Centre this Summer Marks & Spencer (M&S) is set to open a new

large store at the Stafford Riverside Shopping Centre on Thursday 18th August.

The M&S store on Gaolgate Street will close on Wednesday 17th August at 5pm with all colleagues relocating to the new Riverside store.

The new 44,000 sq.ft store will be over double the size of the existing store and will bring the very best of M&S products and service to Stafford customers. The new extensive Womenswear department will feature M&S’s most popular ranges including Indigo, Collection, Classic and Per Una. There will also be more choice in Menswear, Kidswear and Homeware.

For beauty lovers there will be a new Beauty Department which will feature luxurious brands such as NUXE, REN and Nails Inc. For shoppers looking to enjoy M&S’s special, innovative food, the new Foodhall will be a third larger than that of the existing store, offering more than 6,300 products. Customers looking for a seasonal treat will be inspired by M&S’s Spirit of Summer range which features southern-American inspired foods such as Caribbean Pork Kebabs, Manchego & Jalapeno Crisps and Mojito flavoured popcorn – perfect for an evening of entertaining.

The highlight of the new store will be the 100-seater Café which will boast stunning views across the river offering a tranquil setting for customers wanting a refreshing tea break or a delicious lunch.

Childrens Hospice held a Best of British fundraising event on Friday 8th July at the Conservative Association Hall, Castle Street, Stafford.

The Mayor and Mayoress Cllr Geoff Collier and Mrs Cathy Collier also attended the event and I would like to thank them for their support. We were entertained by a keyboard player Peter Bishop who was a wonderful hit on the night with his wide range of songs.

The food was excellent and in many cases locally donated and prepared by committee members. I would like to thank everyone that helped to make the evening a great success and a total of £1,019.00 was raised which included a raffle. We are absolutely delighted with the generosity from all our supporters.
