Teynham Cake and Pudding Competion
We had a fantastic standard of cakes
on the day, it was a feast for the eyes and tummy!
Our cake expert judges: Princess Olga Romanoff, Rev Steve Lillicrap and SBC Cllr Lloyd Bowen had an extremely difficult job picking our 1st, 2nd and 3rd places It truly was an excellent standard of tasty treats presented for the competition All beautifully presented and decorated and what's more all exceptionally tasty!
1st Place went to Poppy Barber's Queens Trio Cake
Poppy is just 20 and lives in Honeyball Walk.
This delicious cake is 3 in one! Absolutley perfectly baked and looked SPECTACULAR
2nd Place to 6
presented
No-Bake Biscoff Cheesecake 3rd Place to Katy Lillicrap's Jubilee Sponge Catharine Cottenden's
This should give you 3 different lovely cakes. I made mine all different sizes and stacked them all together and decorated mine with fresh flowers. Which is all very pretty until it starts to collapse like mine did! But the main thing is they all tasted delicious!
Chocolate and Biscoff Cake
50 g Cocoa Powder
6 tbs boiling water
3 Eggs
4 tbs Milk
175 g Self Raising Flour
Icing
300 g Sugar
125 g unsalted butter
250g Icing Sugar
150g Biscoff Spread
Method
Preheat your oven to 180, this recipe is for 2x 8inch cake tins.
Pop your cocoa powder and boiling water in a bowl and beat together do you have a chocolatey paste Chuck in all your other ingredients and beat together (make sure your eggs and milk are at room temperature so your cake mixture doesn’t curdle )
Grease and line your tins and split the mixture evenly and cook for 25 to 30 minutes If your cake isn’t done after around 25 minutes I tend to cover tinfoil over the top of the cake so it doesn’t burn
You can check your cake is done with a skewer, it should come out clean from the cake Or if you are like me and can never find a skewer, you can use something skewer like. I use a knitting needle, which is purely used for baking!
Let your cakes cool, out of the tins on a cooling rack.
Now that your cakes are cool, and make sure they are cool or everything will melt and slide and go horribly wrong
You can now start to make your buttercream
Beat your butter until it becomes paler, then gradually add your icing sugar in bit by bit, once that is all combined add in your Biscoff spread If you’re buttercream is too thick add in a tablespoon of boiling water at a time and beat until you form the right consistency
Assemble your cakes together however you fancy I like to pipe in my buttercream but I am a bit extra when it comes to stuff like that.
Strawberries and Cream Cake
I know everyone tends to have a sponge recipe that they like to use themselves so feel free to use your favourite and just layer the sponges with fresh cream and strawberries but if you are wanting a recipe then maybe try mine
Ingredients
250 g Butter
250 g Sugar
250 g Self Raising Flour
5 Eggs
2 tbs Baking Powder
Filling
250 mls Double Cream
Fresh Strawberries
Method
Preheat your oven to 180/ 160(fan). This recipe is for 2x 8inch tins
Beat your butter and sugar in a bowl until the butter appears pale and fluffy, next throw in the rest of your ingredients and beat together
Split between your tins and bake in the oven for around 20 to 25 minutes using the same tinfoil technique if needed
Once your cake is cool whip up your double cream until a spreadable consistency and layer double cream and strawberries in between the sponges.
Lemon Drizzle
Preheat your oven to 180/ 160 (fan) and grease and line two 1lb loaf tins (if you can get your hands on loaf tin liners do so, game changer!)
Ingredients
100 g Margarine
175 g Self Raising Flour
1 tsp Baking Powder
175g Caster Sugar
2 Eggs
4 tbsp Milk
1 grated rind of a Lemon
Topping
1 juice of a Lemon
100 g sugar
Method
I love this recipe as you quiet literally just put all your ingredients in a bowl and mix together until combined Divide the mixture between your tins and pop in the oven for 25 30 mins
While your cakes are cooking make your lemon and sugar mix
Squeeze one lemons worth of juice in with your sugar and mix (If you pop your lemon in the microwave for 10 20 seconds it gives you so much more juice)
Once the cakes are baked, leave in your tins and straight away poke loads of holes in the cakes and pour over your lemon and sugar mixture Then leave to cool in the tin once fully cooled you can remove from the tins (don’t do this while the cakes are hot or you will have a rather sticky situation going on)
I would normally just leave the cakes like this but if you where wanting to sandwich them together you can make some buttercream

Thank you to all who supported our Jubilee Coronation Coffee Morning on the 2nd June. The money raised will go towards a Community Project. A big thank you to WI members for their hard work and to Paul who provided the music.
The new play equipment on the meadow is very impressive, and even though a very cold day, the Picnic in the Park went well, congratulations to Teynham Parish Council.
We have had 2 interesting speakers, cartoonist David Chisholm, who is involved with the Whitstable History project, designing artwork to illustrate Whitstable history, a cartoon picture is eye catching and can create further interest Members were shown how to draw simple cartoons and produced good results
Our speaker in June was Richard & Theresa Emmett from Sittingbourne HRGS who gave advice on tracing your family tree how to start and sites to check out Richard stated it is time consuming, easy to get sidetracked and can be expensive It was interesting that certain details on documents, did not always tie up with the age or even the name when baptised was known by Such as John only known as Jack by all, Ethel aged 36 but really was 42 A great deal of painstaking detective work can be needed
We are visiting Provender House in July, the home of Princess Olga Romanov, who opened the Meadow playground for the Teynham Jubilee celebrations.
7th September our speaker will be Kevin Tooher on preparing the garden for Autumn. 5th October Parish Councillor Kate Barnett

News from Teynham Parochial CEP School
As we approach the end of the academic year we always reflect on the past year It has been wonderful to get back to normal especially with all the extra activities that we do. Year 1 and 2 went on a trip to London Zoo in April. For many children this was their first visit to London and they were very excited to spot all the London landmarks as well as the animals. Year R in July went to Wingham Wildlife Park and Years 3, 4 and 5 went to Kent Life to take part in workshops linked to their topics. We were also able to take our Year 6 on a residential to Carroty Wood for an adventurous activities’ week. This included high ropes, archery, bridge building, climbing, swimming and abseiling. It was amazing to see the children push themselves out of their comfort zones and have such fun.
We have also welcomed back parents into school. We held two very well attended Mother’s and Father’s day events where we invited relatives in for a drink and cake. Next year we want to hold more family events as it is so essential that parents and school work together.
We have also been thinking about the wider community. In Years 5 and 6 we have a Global Influencers club. They decided they wanted to support children in another country and have been raising money for a toilet twinning project. They held a wear blue day and a blue cake sale and raised £315. We are hoping to apply for the bronze Global Neighbours accreditation in the next few months.
We are currently looking at ways we can be more involved in the local community. If you have an idea or work with an organisation that could link with the school please contact the school office.
As we look forward to September we look forward to welcoming our new reception class In June and July, the children spent several afternoons with us getting used to the school environment and staff. We have a couple of places in reception for September, please contact the school office for more information.
At the other end of the school our Year 6 will be moving to a variety of secondary schools. This is an enormous change for them but they have all the skills needed to move on; resilience, growth mindset, curiosity and a love of learning. Everyone at Teynham C of E Primary wishes them well and we are sure they will all have a bright future.

Mrs
Swale Borough Council Report
We continue to fight Swale Borough Council's Administration regarding its proposal to put 1,200 new homes to the west of Teynham. The council has not proved a need for the homes, which will only add to the pollution in the village, traffic on all the roads around the area and put more pressure local services.
We are helping the CCG in seeking new premises for the GP surgery following news that the Teynham Surgery building will close and patients moved to Sittingbourne Memorial We think that is unreasonable and are fighting for a better solution.
In Station Road, we are pushing Swale, KCC and the developers to get the car park completed and the old wall replaced to the rear of the properties in Station Road. Similarly, we are astonished it is taking so long to sort out a correctly spelled road sign for Nobel Close, and we're pushing Crest Nicholson for a solution to the land levels to the rear of properties further down Station Road.
The Council has taken the decision to sack the cabinet and replace it with a new Committee system. This means that back benchers like us will have a vote on important decisions affecting residents. Mike is on the Housing & Health Committee and the Policy & Resources Committee (which looks after the Local Plan) while Lloyd is on the Community Committee, Policy and Resources, Regeneration and Property Committee and the Standards Committee.
We both support this move as we believe it brings democracy closer to the grass roots with all 47 councillors involved, rather than have an elite group of 10 cabinet members making all the decisions.
We both support fully the Parish Councillors in their move to a 20mph zone in the village and are working with them to help achieve this. 20mph limits are common throughout Kent and we believe that Teynham deserves one too.
you have an issue or a question
do not hesitate to contact either or both of us.

KCC Council Report
Well, one year into the role and what a rollercoaster of a year it has been. So much so that the below was originally due to be my councillor update last month, but I couldn't find the time to write it.
A year ago when I was fresh faced and two weeks into my tenure, the first piece I wrote for our local parish magazines shared a few of the ambitions I had in mind for my four years in this role. Among them were 20mph limits and roadside verges Two areas which, at the time, I thought might be possible to make good progress on in my first year. Sadly these tasks both turned out to be more complicated than I had realised.
To get a change in speed limit there are a number of hoops to jump through, each of which can take several weeks. Progress has been slow, but I'm pleased to have assisted a number of parish councils to varying degrees in moving their requests forward Sheldwich will hopefully have a long overdue 20mph limit on Lees Court Road by the end of this year, and, if all goes well, other parishes won't be far behind.
Letting roadside verges grow long is another area more complex than I'd originally realised. Despite KCC's vocal support of No Mow May via their 'Kent's Plan Bee' campaign, many verges across our area were unnecessarily cut back during May 2021 and May 2022. In some cases there was a necessity to maintain sightlines for road safety, but in many more this wasn't an issue. KCC are in a tough position on this topic as public opinion is still greatly divided. Recent studies suggested that Kent has seen a 70% reduction in insect life over the past two decades, so we really should be doing all we can to try and reverse that worrying trend. I will continue to push for KCC to reduce their use of glyphosates and leave verges that don't impact on highway sightlines.
I would be lying if I said that my first year as a councillor hasn't been tough. My hair is now greyer and I've gained a few lines on my forehead and inches around my waistline. That being said, the second half of the year was far more enjoyable than the first. The incredibly steep learning curve I started out with is beginning to level off and I'm able to respond to many more enquiries without having to go round the houses to get an answer. More importantly, this knowledge has bolstered my confidence in dealing with KCC related matters.
Regardless of political leaning, our local authorities work best for everyone when opposition parties can provide strong and effective scrutiny of the administration. In February I submitted a motion at KCC's budget meeting which prevented the cost of school bus passes being increased for families with children in receipt of free school meals. This was voted through by the council and the cost of a pass for those families should remain frozen for the next three years
All things considered, my first year has been a case of finding out just how much I didn't know about local government, and then filling the gaps. I still have a lot to learn, but am looking forward to being more proactive as time moves on and I really get to grips with the role.

TEYNHAM WALKING GROUP
Teynham walking group meets on Tuesday mornings outside the Teynham Community Hall at 10.00 for departure at 10.10 to walk various routes around the footpaths and lanes in and around Teynham. Our sociable walks are moderately paced, and we aim to return to our starting point at around midday. If anyone feels like joining us you will be made welcome, just turn up (in suitable footwear for what can be somewhat muddy pathways given our changeable weather, and I would suggest bring a small drink of water, as we do not walk for long enough to stop for a drinks break)

In memory of Cllr Graham Redman
1950 2022
Councillor Graham Redman sadly passed away on Sunday 1st May 2022
Graham died age 72 of liver cancer at his home in Teynham with his wife Janet, daughter Catherine and son Michael by his side He was diagnosed with liver cancer in December 2021 Graham was raised in Chelmsford, Essex, and moved to Teynham when he started teaching in Sheppey
Graham was always a keen quizzer and even had a quiz book published. After retiring in 2009 Graham took up walking, which he loved, especially the pint afterwards.
Graham became a member of Teynham Parish Council in 2021 and had high hopes of been able to contribute to the village and make it an even better place with his vast experience and knowledge In the short time as councillor, he showed what a great asset the parish had acquired. Let's not forget that Graham was also seen every Christmas, as Father Christmas, delivering presents to children around the village. This was as a volunteer so that all donations would go to Demezla charity
Graham will be much missed by family and many friends. A well respected icredibly kind hearted and generous man.

Herbs
SUMMER GARDENING TIPS
Pruning
Prune annual flowers to give the plants a boost and encourage more blooms.Simply pinch off any faded flowers and seed pods from the plants, and soon they will be covered with flowers again.
Trim your herbs. Trim all your herbs regularly so they produce as long as possible!
Weeds
Struggling with weeds? Add a thick layer of mulch to try and help keep the weeds at bay.
Mowing
Raise your mower blades if the weather is dry. Taller grass is more drought tolerant, grows deeper roots, and helps shade the earth to prevent weed seeds from germinating.

Vandolism
As you may be aware the new play equipment in The Meadow has been vandalised on several occasions over the last few weeks.
The damage has been reported to the police along with descriptions of the individuals suspected to be involved. We are also looking at options for CCTV.
Please encourage younger members of the family to respect the community facilities
If you witness anyone vandalising the play equipment please report to the Police using their online form https://www.kent.police.uk/ro/report/ocr/af/how to report a crime/.
On behalf of the wider community, the Parish Council are investing significant sums of money to help improve the facilities.
As a community we can work together to resolve the current blip of vandalism and create a fun space for everyone to enjoy.
Why not pop down and have a look at the equipment when you’re next out for a walk?

Teynham's Police Community Support Officer Report
Dear Residents,
I just wanted to give you a quick update on issues reported to police in your local area. Recently there have been reports of vehicle damage and number plate thefts. As crime prevention advice, I would suggest keeping your vehicle in a well lit area, near CCTV cameras or installing dash cam.
We have also received reports on the use of e scooters in the area, these are not permitted to be used on the road or path and only for use on private land. Anybody seen riding an e scooter will be issued with a Section 59 Warning of the Police Reform Act 2002.
Finally, there has been an increase of reports of nuisance youths in the area. Any youths seen causing anti-social behaviour will be dealt with accordingly.
On a positive note, I have had the opportunity to get out and conduct speed checks in the local area. If you have any suggestions on where you think speed checks may be beneficial, please do not hesitate to email me on jessica.stocks@kent.police.uk.
For any urgent or ongoing incidents, please report this via 101 or 999.
Kind regards,
