My Experience with Vipassana Meditation Maya I had just recently return from a 10 day Vipassana retreat near Dallas. Vipassana is an ancient Indian language which means "to observe things as they really are". Vipassana meditation has changed the course of my life. I can't begin to imagine what my life would have been like had I not known Vipassana. Picture yourself running down the subway trying to catch the next train; you don't care who's around you just as long as make it in time. On these occasions, don't you just wish time could freeze frame even for a split second? Well, that is how I sometimes feel about life. Meditation has helped me to step out of the frame and become the observer. It isn't necessarily an escape but more of a way to cope with life's turmoil. In this day and age, the life of an adolescent is not as clean and innocent as it once was when my grandparents were young. New technology and discoveries come with a price. Today's society has become so fast paced, so money driven, and so corrupted that it is uncommon to see people abuse alcohol and drugs just to escape this world. It is more so uncommon to have drugs, guns, cigarettes, alcohol, and sex as a part of the average High School experience. Fortunately I managed to steer away from all these negative influences. 36

It wasn't easy and I'm still struggling as we all are. And everyone faces the problem of suffering, such as temptations, anger, sadness, and passion. It is a universal malady, which requires a universal remedy. Everyone suffers from anger, it's not a Buddhist anger, Hindu anger, or Christian anger. Anger is simply anger. When one is frustrated because of this frustration, it is neither a Christian, Jewish, or Muslim one. Through meditation I have developed an internal alarm system that goes off whenever I experience, anger, sadness, passion, etc. Instead of getting carried away with these negative emotions or falling into temptations of the pleasurable sensations, I am able to observe them with equanimity. I realize that it was never the objects themselves which I am craving for or having aversions to but it is the sensations of pleasure that I'm addicted to. For example, alcohol addicts are not addicted to alcohol; instead, they are addicted to the sensations caused by the alcohol. During my first course at age 15, my entire perspective of this world shattered right before my eyes. I did not only know it intellectually but I was able to experience it through my meditation. It dawned upon me that ev-

erything is basically empty. Any object, when broken down to its subatomic particles are just mere vibrations. Solid, liquid, and gas are all composed of vibrating atoms attached by covalent or ionic bonds. They are constantly changing. Why must one become so attached to something that is constantly changing? I know this for sure because I felt my entire body vibrating, as if I am made up of grains of sand. If one tries to dissect an atom, you will find the core nucleus (composed to neutrons and protons), huge empty space, and tiny negligible electrons. Even an atom is mostly made up of empty space. These realizations are only the tip of the iceberg. There is more, much much more that we are all oblivious to. I hope all of you do not just sit there and believe what I have to say. No, you must try it out for yourself. To quote the Kalama Sutra: Do not go upon what has been acquired by repeated hearing; Nor upon tradition Nor upon rumor;

Nor upon what is in a scripture; Nor upon surmise; Nor upon an axiom; Nor upon specious reasoning; Nor upon a bias towards a notion that has been pondered over; Nor upon another's seeming ability; Nor upon the consideration, "The monk is our teacher." Only believe and accept something if you have proven it for yourself and found it beneficial for you and others. So please don't take my words for granted. Test it! Prove it for yourself ! For your own benefit. I am very fortunate to have encountered Buddhism at such a young age and I am honored to be standing here in front of you today. I hope my words have not just been mere sound vibrations in the wind. Hopefully they have become an inspiration to you all to try a 10 day Vipassana course for yourself.
