COMPONENT TWO TEMITAYO AKINBOLU

BRIEF | SPECIFICATION

Ilford is a large town in East London. It’s a commercial and retail district is surrounded by extensive residential development. The town is located on the transport corridor between London and coastal Essex, with both the A12 and the central railway station connecting the two regions. Ilford has recently become one of England's most multicultural towns, thanks to increased immigration levels. For this project, I will be redesigning the Redbridge Central Library and Museum, Ilford to attract the younger generation back into the library. The library redesign project aims to transform our existing library space into a modern, inviting, and functional hub for learning, collaboration, and community engagement. The redesign should prioritize user experience, accessibility, and sustainability while embracing innovative design concepts. The theme for this project will be Organic form mainly focusing on Fossils and their formations. This will fit nicely with the function of the building as it will have some functional elements to it.

The Library would provide:

o Children's Library

o Group Study Areas

o Computer Areas

o Outdoor Seating

o Meeting Rooms

o Café

o Areas For Museum Exhibits

o Car park remains

REDBRIDGE CENTRAL LIBRARY AND MUSUEM

ILFORD

Ilford is a town in the London Borough of Redbridge, situated in northeast London, England. Historically, it was part of Essex until it was absorbed into Greater London in 1965. Ilford has a rich history and has grown into a bustling suburban area with diverse communities and amenities. It's known for its commercial centre , cultural attractions like the Ilford Central Library and Museum, and its vibrant multicultural atmosphere.

REDBRIDE CENTRAL LIBRARY

Situated in Ilford, London, the Ilford Central Library and Museum is a prominent cultural and educational establishment. Offering a variety of materials, exhibitions, and educational programmes for the local community as well as visitors, it functions as a library and a museum. The library offers access to a vast collection of books, journals, and digital resources, while the museum displays the history and tradition of Ilford and the surrounding districts.

I have analysed the surrounding buildings to gauge an understanding of what amenities are available to the local people.

This also allows me to look at the styles of surrounding buildings to gain inspiration for the design of the library.

COMMERCIAL RESIDENTIAL

When designing the library, I must be mindful of the overall site. There is already an existing car park available, which I conveniently placed at the end because the road which the library is located is restricted to buses only. This means when designing I must work around the car park that is already present.

I will be looking to various types of Library and museum interiors to gain greater understanding of how the space should look and what elements it should include. From this I will be using these structures as inspiration to create my design. The Libraries that I will be using is :

The Ilford central library and museum was built in. Since then, there has a been a decrease in people visiting the library.

After looking into the site and the surrounding area I have decided to create a multipurpose library that will modernise the space whilst still offering a sense of community. It shall include green and community spaces, outdoor seating, café and museum exhibits.

Overall, the site will be accessible for all so that it is more inclusive to people with various needs.

RESIDENTIAL DEMOGRAPHIC

The entire town of Ilford is also made up of its neighbourhoods Aldborough Hatch, Barkingside, Clayhall, Cranbrook, Fairlop, Fullwell Cross, Loxford, Gants Hill, Goodmayes, Newbury Park, Redbridge and Seven Kings. The total population counted 168,168 people in the 2011 census, compared to 303,858 for the borough of Redbridge as a whole. In recent years, because of increased levels of immigration, Ilford has become one of the most multicultural towns in England.

LOCATION REVIEW

The site is currently Redbridge Central Library in Ilford , East London. It is a prominent cultural and educational establishment. Offering a variety of materials, exhibitions, and educational programmes for the local community as well as visitors, it functions as a library and a museum. The colour scheme and flooring design enhance the feeling of space and light. The shelving layout achieves capacity without blocking any windows and makes the most of the popular original wooden benching built in front of the windows on the ground floor. Despite such characteristics the overall designs of the buildings is outdated and fails to entice younger people to visit.

On visit to the location, I have identified certain problems with the area. The dull and aged colours of the building makes it uninviting to visitors that walk by. As a result, it would discourage people from entering and potentially enjoying the amenities available. This will also be a missed opportunity in building up the community and social aspects amongst the visitors.

A few things I will be considering in my design and ideas is to create a space which can unify the visitors and allow for a greater community to be formed. I shall re design the café area so that people are able to enjoy the books available and the food sold there. I would also like to include elements like a solar panel or wind turbines to make the space more sustainable. This can potentially be a learning activity for the children that would visit the library. I should also take into consideration the overall theme of the area. I wish to create a space that incorporates visual influences of fossils. This links perfectly with the building as it also acts as a museum for the community.

ARCHITECTS FOR INSPIRATION 02

MICHAEL PAWLYN

British architect Michael Pawlyn is renowned for his creative approach to sustainable design, which is mostly influenced by natural concepts. His work on biomimicry, which imitates natural structures and processes to provide sustainable design and architectural solutions, has earned him recognition. Pawlyn's work frequently investigates how biological systems might educate and inspire efficient, eco-friendly architecture solutions. His work highlights the value of sustainability and the ways in which design can benefit the environment.

THEEDENPROJECT

Situated in a repurposed China clay pit, The Eden Project has gained international recognition for both its breathtaking architecture and the wonder of its contents. Plants from a wide variety of temperatures and habitats are housed inside the two biomes. The biomes' design was an exercise in material and space efficiency. Each dome is a two-layered, hex-tri-hex space frame structurally.

In many of projects there are elements of nature integrated into the designbiomimicry. With my theme of this project being organic form, his work is a good source of inspiration.

This organic form has extensive layers/panelling that produces an interesting effect.

ARCHITECTS FOR INSPIRATION

VO TRONG NGHIA ARCHITECTS

Vo Trong Nghia Architects (VTN Architects), founded in 2006, is Vietnam's leading architectural practice, with offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. International architects, engineers, and staff collaborate on cultural, residential, and commercial projects worldwide. VTN Architects, which is based in Ho Chi Minh City, uses lushly planted walls, hanging vines, structure-piercing trees, weathered stones, and sunken landscapes in its designs. All these efforts are infused with a resolute vision: to create Green Architecture that merges nature, local vernacular, and through modern materials and methods contemporary design.

BATTRANGHOUSE

Bat Trang is home to mostly traditional Vietnamese-style homes with tiled roofs that are constructed of brick or wood.

Many of these villas are attached to posh resorts or are available for individual rentals, offering travelers exploring the Ha Long Bay region an opulent haven.

Vietnam's Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty.

HALONGVILLA

The green roof is a triple-ring shape drawn with a single stroke, encircling three courtyards inside as safe playgrounds.

All functions are accommodated under this roof. As the roof lowers to the courtyard, it provides access to the upper level and vegetable gardens on top- the place where children learn the importance of agriculture and recover connection to nature.

The building is made of a continuous narrow strip with two side operable windows which maximise the cross ventilation and natural lighting.

03 THEME RESEARCH

FOSSIL FORMATION

Fossil formation typically occurs through a process called fossilization, which involves several steps:

Death- An organism dies, and its remains are buried relatively quickly to protect them from scavengers, decay, and environmental disturbances.

Decay and Burial- Over time, the remains of the organism may decay, leaving behind harder parts such as bones, shells, teeth, or wood. These remains become buried under layers of sediment, which protects them from further decay and mechanical damage

Compaction and Mineralization- As more layers of sediment accumulate above the buried remains, the weight of the overlying sediment increases, compressing the lower layers. Minerals in groundwater can percolate through the sediment and replace the original organic material with minerals such as silica, calcite, or iron compounds. This process, known as mineralization or petrification, gradually transforms the organic material into rock-like fossils.

Exposure-Over millions of years, geological processes such as uplift, erosion, and weathering may expose the fossilized remains at the Earth's surface. Fossils can be found in sedimentary rocks, which form from the accumulation and cementation of sediment.

THEME 03 PRIMARY RESEARCH

For the primary research I have chosen to look into the before stages of fossilisation this would include various types of prints. Therefore, I chose to look at my own hand as inspiration for the design. I have deconstructed the lines and forms created that are unique to me.

I have chosen my hand in particular my palm and fingerprints because if I were to make a print it can resemble a fossil footprint or something similar.

With each overlap a different form is created which can be transformed into a structure

The lines could also be used as inspiration for the library bookshelves that would be within the library

Each individual line on my palm is connected to one another

I have deconstructed the forms of the section of my fingerprint

GEOLOGY FOSSIL

I was able to obtain a fossil from the geology department. From this I deconstructed the forms to use as inspiration for the design of the library

I was able to extract key forms created in the fossil that I believe can be used in the design

Every form within this fossil is unique. This allows for me to experiment with various forms that can make up the library space or exterior. It can also be used to make up the outdoor space for the visitor of the library

THEME 03

SECONDARY RESEARCH

I have collected a few secondary images of fossils and prehistoric bone structures to use as inspiration for my design. I have deconstructed the form to identify the elements if the fossils that stand out to me the most. From this I will use these forms to create and exterior and interior of the library.

NAUTILUS FOSSIL

This is a section of the dinosaur’s neck bones. I have split it in half to create this ribbed form.

With this fossil there is a continuous spiral occurring like the Fibonacci spiral.

MEDIA LIBRARY SAINTE-GENEVIÈVE- DES-BOIS

The library hosts events, exhibitions, workshops, and other activities that foster interpersonal connections and encourage cross-cultural communication, functioning as a thriving cultural hub and community center.

Located in Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois, France, the Media Library Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois is a noteworthy architectural project created by archi5 in partnership with Calmm architecture. The library is distinguished for its creative layout and its incorporation into the neighbourhood's urban environment.

The library's design places a strong emphasis on harmony with the surrounding landscape, including outdoor seating areas for reflection and relaxation as well as green spaces and landscaping.

The library's architecture exemplifies a modern style defined by straight lines, geometric shapes, and the use of steel and glass components to convey an air of transparency and openness.

FRONT ELEVATION

Shanghai, China is home to the well-known bookshop Shanghai Book City. Both tourists and book enthusiasts like visiting there. Wutopia Lab is a wellknown architectural business that creates original and inventive ideas. They have worked on a number of projects, such as cultural venues like Shanghai Book City, where they combine inventive architecture with practical design to produce amazing environments.

This three-dimensional mountain within the building serves as a platform. It can be used for book launches, exhibitions, and events, becoming a stage for cultural activities. Readers can freely sit, stand, peruse, and stroll.

RESEARCH 03

JUANZONG BOOKS & CAFE / CASE PAVILION

The Sou Fujimoto Architects created a continuous, undulating ring-shaped roof with an uneven, curved surface shell structure composed of thin concrete that faces the southwest shore. Invited by Aranya and the owners, Yishan Children's Bookstore and Juanzhong Bookstore, we created a reading and leisure area for the people of Haikou beneath this large roof.

Their goal was to create an abstract experience that defies categorization as interior or outdoor, as well as time, and is characterized by a modicum of conflict and variability not often encountered in everyday commercial environments. This is meant to simultaneously combine and startle the visitor flow, the municipal gardens, the waterscape and pink hues of Haikou Bay, and the assortment of foreign books.

MAGDALENE COLLEGE LIBRARY / NIALL MCLAUGHLIN ARCHITECTS

The new structure is a larger library with an archive and an image gallery, taking the place of the small, ill-equipped spaces in the nearby Grade I Listed Pepys Building. Situated along the boundary wall separating the more open space of the Fellows' Garden and the enclosed Master's Garden, the new building is situated in an extremely delicate historic context.

In addition to supporting the floors and book stacks, a regular grid of brick chimneys ventilates the building by drawing warm air upward

IDEAS DEVELOPMENT 04 FROM RESEARCH

The curves created from the fossil and my fingerprint used as inspiration for the basic form in the model. Both forms share a common characteristic of starting from central point and rippling outward .

NAUTILUSFOSSIL

These are the central points of the forms. They both have a similar initial structure despite producing different end forms

INDEXFINGER

For this initial model I have taken inspiration from each form to have the model ripple out from the centre. Each ripple is curves into the centre

SKETCHUP

VARIATIONONE

VARIATIONTWO

The second variation places the form on an angle closer to the initial model. This similar to the fingerprint forms as the shapes are all offset to curve to a point.

Can be structural elements/ divisions to section the building depending in the areas uses

Indoor outdoor reading space that allows people to read indoors with a possible rooftops view to provide the space with natural light.

The arrangement of the building would work around the central part of the building and develop outwards like how the fossil starts in the middle the expands as it unwinds

First variation of the design is very straight but follows the initial form of the model. The gradual increase in curves.

I would be moving forth with the second variation to further develop as an idea of the library museum. I will also take into consideration how the floors would be implemented.

IDEAS DEVELOPMENT 04 FROM

RESEARCH

DINOSAUR BONES

The bones of this dinosaur could be used as archways to be added to the building

FOSSIL

The way the form is broken up can be reiterated in the design. I have deconstructed elements of the fossil to be used in my model.

SKETCHUP

VARIATIONONE

This is the first development of the model I have created. It has some resemblance to the first model so when I am developing the model I must work to make it unique.

Open spaces could be used as glass as well to create division of floors

Archway /possibly an entrance into the library

The curves of the folds add character to the design.

The structure could be risen to act as a shell form the main structure of the building.

Entrance could be in the middle then the rest of the building follows the curve of the initial model.

Gradual increase and decrease of size in the curved structure. with a slight bend.

IDEAS DEVELOPMENT 04

FROM RESEARCH

RIGHTPALM

I have taken the lines created in my palm to be added into an initial model. The way the lines intersect with each other will be the main characteristic in the initial model of the design.

BAGHCHALBOTIQUE RESTAURANT

I have also used the form of the BAGH CHAL BOTIQUE RESTAURANT to use as inspiration in the design.

SKETCHUP

I have created two abstract variations of the initial model for me to develop later in the project. I have identified what changes I can implement to further improve each design.

From BAGH CHAL BOTIQUE RESTAURANT the I shall be using the curves from the form to create the basic shape of the model. It will act as a shell to the intersecting slats.

VARIATIONONE

The straight lines that represent the lines formed in my palm could be transformed into crossing paneling to form the roof of the library. Could also acts as a way for visitors to look at the sky.

There could be an entrance where the two curves meet or possibly where it is open at the side.

This variation of the model that I created on SketchUp is the most like the original model. This model could be further developed but there must be a few more changes.

VARIATIONTWO

This variation is more simplified of the initial model. This version of the model could be further developed surrounding this form.

IDEAS DEVELOPMENT

FROM RESEARCH

I have taken the leaf fossil and peace lily leaf to create an initial model of the library redesign

LEAFFOSSIL

SKETCHUP

I have created two abstract variations of the initial model for me to develop later in the project. I have identified what changes I can implement to further improve each design.

PEACELILY

I have used the outline to create the form I made using curved plastic.

Using the characteristics of each form I collected from the primary research I have produced this initial model for me to develop to create a design for the library.

04

VARIATIONONE

VARIATIONTWO

This variation uses the initial model suggestively. Extracting the general form as inspiration to make this form

Different entrances possible with this initial model

Could potentially add thickness to each curve to create 3D forms that could create a form.

Archway for people to walkthrough to reach a possible entrance.

Could have a central point of the structure that ripples out to create the building.

This variation uses the initial model literally to make a form for the library. I have slightly rearranged the form to make it more functional

There are two possible entrances to the form that could be put into consideration when developing

DEVELOPING DESIGN IDEAS

IDEA ONE

I have chosen to continue with this variation of the design as it allows for a wider range of development when creating a structure.

Like the AQUA TOWER which has ridges on the surface can be translated on to this structure.

I have created a mock SketchUp model of the form above. I have implemented features I wish to be included in the design. This design has two buildings that join in the middle. The ridges on the outside of the building resemble the fossil from the secondary research

DEVELOPING DESIGN IDEAS

IDEA TWO

I have chosen to continue with this variation of the design as it allows for a wider range of development when creating a structure.

BOIS as my main source of inspiration for this design. It successfully uses an irregular form to design a structure. From this I will create an irregular based form to build up from to create an initial design.

In this SketchUp model I have demonstrated the archway curves that add character to the design. There are slight irregularities in the main form of the building which takes inspiration from

DEVELOPING DESIGN IDEAS

IDEA THREE

I have chosen to continue with this variation of the design as it allows for a wider range of development when creating a structure.

From variation one I shall be taking the irregular slats and the simple cylindrical form. The slats can be used to construct a rooftop window design to provide the library with natural lighting, which is essential for the visitors of the establishment

Even though I created two variations of the initial model I have decided to combine them together

Using the form of as inspiration I can possibly create a slightly underground outdoor space for visitors

In this SketchUp model I have demonstrated the slats on variation one as a window mosaic on the roof

SKETCHUP

04

The structural barrier can be developed to improve the outdoor space for the visitor to use and enjoy

DEVELOPING DESIGN IDEAS

IDEA FOUR

I have chosen to continue with this variation of the design as it allows for a wider range of development when creating a structure.

I shall create a slight opening at the front here to allow for the visitors to venture freely into different points of the library easily.

SKETCHUP

For this model's development I think exploding the form would be best suited for the design.

Large windows would wrap around the structure to provide ample natural light

04

If I were to develop this design further, I would create connections to each section of the library

MOOD BOARD

After conducting a mixture of primary and secondary research I have created a mood board to gain more inspiration as I design the library.

04
EXTERIOR

I have created a simple mood board to illustrate the theme and atmosphere I wish to be present in the interior of the café.

Many of the pictures present have very bright and open spaces due to the large windows. This is similar to the building that I wish to design for the site.

There are a lot of natural elements also present which links closely with the chosen theme of fossils. With many of the interior design incorporating materials such as wood and stone.

INTERIOR

For the interior design of the library there will be emphasis placed on an open plan space. Especially for the museum displays and the main library area.

With the large windows that will be plenty of lighting which allows the library to be sustainable as well as inviting for visitors especially during summertime.

With the design of the bookshelves there will be characteristics of fossils present to reinforce the theme of the project.
