Department of Medicine

Be a person rich in traits and character before being a physician. We strive to offer the learning environment to bring this to realization.

■A small-class lesson system has been introduced to enable students to learn effectively. The lessons of physiology, chemistry and English for first-year students are conducted in classes organized according to the students’achievement level, so that they can thoroughly absorb the basics of these subjects. ■A limited number of subjects are taught intensively within a short period. In the second year, students are to review what they have learned in the first year, so that they can learn effectively from the ground up ■In the comprehensive practice of introductory medicine in the first year, the integrated practice in the third year and the practice by case (PBL) in the fourth year, students first learn themselves in small groups and then present what they have found to the whole class for discussion.

Topics Selected Subjects Teikyo University Hospital The newly constructed University Medical Hospital, which opened in the Itabashi Campus in May 2009, is an advanced treatment hospital with a critical care center, ER, a comprehensive center for perinatal medicine, etc. With the completion of this hospital, students now can take practical training under an ideal environment.

Study Group on Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support The Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is an international guideline for life-saving measures acknowledged by the American Heart Association (AHA), known to be the highest in terms of lifesaving percentage. Our ACLS study group offers case-by-case skill practices, using critical care center’ s simulator, allowing students to master skills that cannot be obtained through classroom lectures only. Without lifesaving measures, the survival rate will decline by 10% per minute. Students are trained to react spontaneously upon encountering such situations. Faculty of MEDICINE

Introduction to Medicine - Interdisciplinary Training (First Year) Students form small groups and examine various medical problems that have become a topic of conversation in society, presenting the findings to the whole class. Researching freely on the Internet or by referring to books is a skill indispensable for the medical profession. It is also important for students to understand the value of teamwork through research in small groups. Accurate knowledge and presentation skills are also required to report the results to other people. Through these studies, students will understand firsthand that medicine requires both science and art.

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences ■The emphasis is placed on the nurturing of well-rounded personalities adequate for the healthcare profession. Pharmacists with rich humanity are fostered through seminars consisting of discussion in small groups, simulated medication counseling and other programs, as well as liberal arts lectures. ■Our practical training programs are conducted in the advanced hospital facilities in collaboration with the University Medical Hospital. ■Through cutting-edge research and clinical training, we aim to cultivate attitudes as professional pharmaceutical scientists and help them develop ability to set challenges and solve problems.

We aim to develop clinical healthcare professionals who have the ability to think from a patient's perspective.

Constitution A

The actual court environment accommodating a citizen judge system is reproduced using four cameras and other devices in a multimedia classroom where students can experience the world of legal practices. In the lessons of trials under the realistic court environments, students themselves hold a court as persons concerned in cases.

Although the constitution is a statute, it is not a law. The lectures start by having students think about that difference. Once they understand the significance of having a constitution, it must be easier for them to understand each point of discussion based on specific cases than to learn concepts. Therefore, after lectures on general theories, students are encouraged to think about various problems relating to constitutions based on precedents. Lectures on judicial precedents are given by addressing leading cases, especially humanright issues.

Paleography Historical science starts from reading and interpreting documents related to respective times. The acquisition of a skill to decipher twisted ancient scripts, as often seen in the collection of museums and local history museums, is the first step in paleography. Based on that skill, students will learn what each text means and when, by whom and for what purpose it was written, thereby developing images about each age as if having direct talks with people in those days.
