Movie Review – GET OUT (2017) Article by: Philomena & Zoe http://workfilonzoe.wixsite.com/fandz

Get Out a comedy horror movie based on racism

The movie “Get Out” is an American comedy horror film that’s written, produced, and directed by Jordan Peele. The movie is about Chris, an African-American photographer (played by Daniel Kaluuya) who went to his Caucasian girlfriend Rosie’s (played by Allison Williams) hometown for a weekend to meet her parents. At first Chris wasn’t suspicious about this town, his girlfriend, or her family, but after a series of events Chris finally-

-realized that Rosie’s family actually has a dark secret that involves kidnapping African-American people (due to their genetic buildups) and implanting Caucasian people’s brain into their heads. After being hypnotized, held captive, and discovering this whole plan, Chris tried hard to escape from this town.

We saw this movie’s trailer being repeatedly shared and played on Facebook, so we couldn’t resist the urge to click the link to see the full trailer. The affects that we saw in the trailer are really intriguing, and the tense atmosphere the director built also made the movie even more attractive. After seeing the movie, we were a little disappointed because we were expecting something more intense and thrilling, but in reality the movie is more of a thriller mixed with comedy. However, the message that the movie is trying to convey to their viewers is loud and clear, racism.

“If I could, I would have voted for Obama for a third term” Through the careful and precise planning of the characters, setting, and timing, the director created a realistic vibe to the movie. The saying “The devil is in the details” is the perfect description of the movie. Looking at the surface, it looks like the white people in the movie are being racist towards the black people. For example, the help/servants around the house are all black, and the father of Rosie constantly brought up the fact “I will vote for Obama for the third time if I could.” to Chris. But digging deeper, these actions actually shows the fact that white people are envious of black people’s strong body structure and genetic buildups.

You can see from the interactions between Rosie’s brother and Chris and Chris’s interactions with the other people he encountered at the family’s party in the movie). In reality, they wanted to inherit these traits from black people through having a brain transplant with them.

“Get Out” is director Jordan Peele’s very first film, his first film being so successful at different aspects of casting, filming, or setting arrangements makes us look forward to his future works. We highly recommend to watch this movie, not only because it’s a well written and well directed screenplay, but also that this movie addressed a lot of issues that are happening in this world, in our society, and all around us
